I cannot ‘muscle through’ this as is so often my chosen course of action. There are too many moving parts, and I am not in control of who will buy tickets. And of course with these thoughts, other voices, like the wind and the waves, demand my attention: “You have brought the whole church out on this limb with you! Everyone is working so hard! This is beyond me – but not beyond my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This is beyond me – so I will pray hard and work hard, and leave the rest to Him. This is beyond me – so when (WHEN!) people are saved and set free, HE will receive all glory, honor and praise. And I know, through the process, I will have a clearer, bigger picture of who Jesus is. Are your ankles feeling wet? What’s your challenge, fear; the thing that is stretching you? Hear the voice of the Master who bids you come, and also to have no fear. Choose to believe, block all other voices, except His: “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” And together we will all see Jesus more clearly. GO! In His Love! Pastor Cal

I want to start off my article for this month by thanking all of you who have sent prayers, cards, text

messages, Facebook comments and tweets to me over these past few weeks during my grandmother’s illness and passing. I have to confess that it was a very difficult time for all of my family, but I’m grateful for her faith in Christ and for the fact that she is no longer suffering. I am also thankful for our faith in Christ, which has sustained us during this time.

A couple of weeks ago, several of our youth and adults gathered together with churches from six states for PassportChoices to learn more about what it means to be part of God’s revolution. We discovered what it means to go out in the streets to everyone around us and do missions differently… to be the hands and feet of Jesus. The youth who were a part of the trip are excited to be more involved in missions this fall, and we’d love to tell you more about it. Speaking of which… on Sunday night, August 9th at 6:00 PM, we invite you to come out to hear more about our trip. You will definitely receive a blessing.

I don’t know about you, but to me it seems that we are seeing new faces become part of the life of our church each week. I was thinking about this recently and I got the idea of having a “Family Connect Night.” This will be a night where families can come together, share a meal, play some games and share our stories in the hope that we would all get to know one another better. It will take place on Friday night, August 28, starting at 6:30 PM in McDowell Hall. To know how much food to prepare for, we are asking families to sign up either on the Family Ministry Bulletin Board or online at myJHBC by August 23. I hope to see all of you here.

I also want to take this opportunity to thank Kayla Honeycutt for her service as our Children’s Ministry Intern over the past couple of months. She has been very involved in preparing Sunday and Wednesday night activities for our children, along with leading children’s sermons and preparing several outings for the summer. She has done an outstanding job. Her last day with us is Wednesday, August 5, so please be sure to give her a word of affirmation as she begins her sophomore year at NC State.

Finally, we have some back-to-school related activities coming up for our youth and children in August. Please check out the Family Ministry page to learn more about those opportunities. Blessings, Rich

DEACON”S CORNER Submitted by Tim Smith

The Fellowship of Deacons began their meeting on July 12 with a devotion that spoke of our need, as

individuals and as a church, to go out into the world filled with the love of Christ and to demonstrate that love to those we encounter beyond our walls. "If we isolate ourselves from others, we have no impact and demonstrate a lack of love". May we all be challenged to love our neighbors as Christ loves us! Several items were on the agenda for consideration this month. The hearing loop system remains a work in progress. Please be patient as the installers still must return and inspect the system. If a church member would like to have their personal hearing aides checked for compatibility with the hearing loop, please contact Curt Brown for assistance. Please mark your calendars for the annual Deacon and Spouse/Guest Banquet to be held on Friday, September 11 at Ron's Barn at 6:30 PM. The cost is $12.50 per person which includes the meal, drink, tax and tip. A deacon will be contacting you to secure your reservation in the near future. By the time you receive this report, our Church will have selected five (5) new deacons for the 2015-2016 church year. It is the desire of all of the deacons to serve you, our congregation. For us to be of help to you, we must know of your needs. Do not hesitate to call us with a request for help or with a prayer request. We would also ask that you pray for us as we endeavor to serve this wonderful fellowship of believers.

Wishing You the Best!!!

NOTES FROM REV. RONNIE

I would like to thank all the participants who attended this year’s Adult Vacation Bible School. We were very fortunate to have had a wonderful attendance with an average attendance of 45. May I say “hats off” to all those who prepared our dinner each evening. What a blessing it was to have heard the mission stories from Matt and Melanie Storie, David, Heather and Jyoti Webb, Daniel and Michelle Sims, Rod and Debi Bond, Greg Gulley and Hannah Cowfer. May each of us be blessed from their stories and may we continue to pray for them and support them in a way that is pleasing to the Lord. I cannot begin to say how much I appreciated everyone’s sacrifice and efforts to help support all the mission projects. They will be blessed and you will be even more so by your kindness and generosity in your gifts of love. Each evening we heard a brilliant and inspiring monologue from Debbie Dail as she portrayed Mary, the mother of Jesus. May each of us that attended whether it was for one night, two nights, or all five nights have a different perspective of the life that Mary lived. Her valiant courage, her sacrifices, her faithfulness, her joys, her sorrows, her pain and the love that she shared for her Son. Adam Hamilton once again has given us a wonderful study through words, prayers, video and his personal research, experience, and in-depth study to create and write such a study on an important figure in our Christian heritage.

I do not believe that there is anyone that doesn’t like to listen to or even participate in some form of music. As our summer activities and vacations end, we would like to invite you to a special Sunday evening of singspiration on August 30. Our evening will begin at 6:00 PM with a time of worshiping through a variety of musical talents, fellowship and desserts. If you would like to be a participate in the musical portion of the evening

as a singer or an instrumentalist, in the form of solos, duets, trios, or quartets. Please contact Richard Sistrunk as soon as possible because we are limited to the number that can participate in this special hour of music. Richard Sistrunk will need your name(s), musical genre to be performed and your first and second choice selection because we don’t want to duplicate any numbers.

In conjunction with the musical portion of this special event, we want everyone to bring their favorite pick up foods, cakes, and of course, we need those who are experts in making freezers of homemade ice cream. There will be sign up sheets in Sunday School classrooms, on bulletin boards, and tables throughout the church. Let’s have a wonderful time of food, fellowship, and as we leave to go out with a song in our hearts. It’s never too early to think about Christmas. The music ministry in all churches always begins Christmas preparations early. The Christmas season will be here before we can sing Deck the Halls with boughs of Holly. On Sunday evening, November 29, we will have the Hanging of the Greens service, Sunday evening, December 6, the Children’s Music Ministry will present their Christmas music, and then on Saturday, December 12 and Sunday, December 13, the Sanctuary Choir will be presenting their musical presentation.

Each year we are so very fortunate to have Ms. Betty to choreograph the Sanctuary Choir musical selections with our liturgical dancers. This year will be no different

NOTES FROM REV. RONNIE (Continued)

she is ready and willing to give of her talents to help present the music of the season. Now that a date has been determined, we will need to start getting a list of names of those who would like to participate with the liturgical dancers. Guys, there will be something that you can do to help out. So please begin giving your name, and contact information to Jan Blakely or Rachel Brown. A WORD OF THANKS - I could not let this opportunity pass without another word of thanks and thanksgiving even though somewhat impersonal to all of you who have prayed, sent cards or notes of encouragement, telephone calls, personal conversations, invitations to eat at your home or ask me out to dinner in a local restaurant since my Mom’s demise. It has been the most difficult life changing experience in my life and I cannot thank each of you enough for your concern for me. I must share this quote that a dear friend shared with me that may help you through your grief. “There will always be a hole in your heart that will only be filled in eternity.”

Friday, August 28 Price $22.00 per person

Please give payment to Jean Walker before Sunday, August 9. If you are willing to drive a van or provide a car, please call Jean at 919-775-2396. We will be leaving from the Woodland Avenue parking lot at 5:30 PM. Come let's have some great food and fun. Enough laughs to last another year! "Northwood Temple presents its 28th annual dinner theater season, running from August 15 to October 17. For all these years we have been following the antics of a fictitious little town called Smith Corners. This year's episode is titled On the Bench . . . what do you do when the game of life sits you on the sidelines? What do you do when a hard bend in the road of life comes your way? Or, worse still, what do you do when you're thrown off the road in the middle of that curve? The crazy characters in Smith Corners have weathered some pretty tough knocks in the past few years but managed to keep a smile on their face, a ready joke to tell, and a positive faith that the Lord will see them through. Come and see how they help some new folks in town deal with being on the bench."

CITY ON A HILL NEWS

From David, Heather and Jyoti Webb

Greeting from the green hills of Mussoorie! The monsoon rains have been heavy and everything has turned green again. We are thankful for some breaks in the rain with wonderfully clear views of the valley below us. We started school in late July with Jyoti joining 1st grade. She loves her new school and has already made some good friends. It’s been a joy to see her settle in so well and feel welcomed by the community. While we are very thrilled to have Jyoti home now, the court process to finalize the adoption is currently stalled as the lawyers are on strike for the second time this year. Please pray that this strike would end quickly! Our next court date will be in early August if the strike ends soon. It is hard to believe that this year we began our fifth year serving here! My, how things have changed! We now have a daughter and we feel so connected to the community here. What once was strange and new has become familiar and comfortable. For this school year, Heather will continue teaching General Music, Choir, and Piano in the elementary and middle schools. David will be teaching Religious Education in the middle school. We will also both serve as advisors for sixth grade students and continue to lead Friendship Club, a weekly discipleship time for elementary students. In addition to our teaching duties this year, we are both helping to keep the Chaplaincy Program running in the absence of a school chaplain. David has the responsibility as the Chaplaincy Coordinator and will work with Chaplaincy Council and other volunteers to organize Religious Education retreats, assembly devotions, and chapel services throughout the year. Heather is also helping with the Religious Education retreats, as well as, a prayer team and the community care team. This will surely be a busy season for us at school. We ask for your continued prayer as new parents and as we take on these additional duties this school year. Thanks be to God for all that he has done and continues to do in this City on a Hill!

HIGHER HEIGHTS UPDATE On June 24th seventy seniors enjoyed a picnic lunch in McDowell Hall. We thank the church for the hamburgers and hot dogs prepared by Wanda and her kitchen staff. Dr. Cal Sayles was the program speaker. We played a game using scriptures about love. On July 31, we traveled to the K and W Cafeteria in Chapel Hill for lunch and enjoyed some shopping at the Chapel Hill Mall. We had a great time of eating, shopping and fellowship. On August 28, we will be traveling to Fayetteville to the Northwood Temple Dinner Theater. The price is $22.00 per person for the dinner and play. Payment is due on Sunday, August 9th. Please sign up on the Family Ministry bulletin board for this trip. We have 30 seats reserved. This trip is open to all. We will be starting up in September with our regular meetings in McDowell Hall on the last Wednesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. All seniors are welcome.

REPORT FROM CHRIS AND REBECCA AUTRY The following is a Final Prayer Report from the Autry’s concerning their transition from the Abide Church plant they have been working with in Pittsburgh, PA for the last three years. They are no longer able to serve due to a loss of funding from the North American Mission Board. The JHBC Missions and Outreach Team are asking for our prayers for the Autry family during this time of transition. Prayer Report—July 2015 As we celebrate America’s freedom, our family lights a sparkler in gratitude to all of you. Without you, we wouldn’t have touched our 4 communities with the gospel over the last three years. Without you, our family would not have been able to sacrifice and serve our community and our church with generosity for the last three years. Because of you, guys like Chris U. is wrestling with the gospel as he sits with his family in a Russian Orthodox Church. Because of you, Jeff D. is now praying to our Triune God instead of praying to the spirit of alcohol. Because of you, a 5th grade student who has the math proficiency of a 2nd grader learned (not just memorized) the entire multiplication table. One day while she was learning her charts, she asked me in front of the entire class, “what’s it going to take for us to save your church Mr. Autry? A lot of people need to hear what you’re talking about…” Because of you a suicide didn’t happen, a marriage was restored, a marriage was built, a child was adopted and a single mom has a Biblical community to help her wrestle with her teenage son battling some dark issues. Because of you our Hindu families have been learning about the One true God and how He lives in our lives. Because of you Sam knows firsthand that He is a missionary first and always. Because of you our family is stronger, more focused and more evangelistic than ever. Because of you Pastor’s across our area have received some pulpit relief in the last 3 months by using me to supply preach. Because of you we have given 3 church plants bibles, projectors, signage, books, materials, children’s ministry resources and other items needed for them to reach their communities. Because of you we have more stories than we can share about what God has done in our 3 years in Pittsburgh. As I write this, we have 6 days before we leave. We are not sure what the coming months hold for us. The more I try to figure it out the bigger my headache gets. However what we know is the following:

(Dates July 9th through July 28th were omitted in this article) August 3rd - Phyllis Watson is having her first of two replacement surgeries (hip and knee). We will stay in Aberdeen, NC until God opens the door for our next stop We are talking with one church in Johnstown, PA at the possibility of becoming their Lead Pastor. It is a great opportunity as it would keep us close to Pittsburgh and give us an opportunity to continue planting churches in this area. However, we are unsure as to what will happen next. God has been so gentle and caring with us over the last few months, He has done a great work of healing in our hearts that we believe prepares us for the future… Please know we are grateful for any and all financial gifts given to us in our transition. As of July 4th, we are moving all of our gifts to 8706 Aberdeen Rd, Aberdeen, NC 28315. We understand and are grateful for every gift that is used to help us during our transition. Please know that all of them will be used to assist our monthly needs. We also understand if you would like to cease giving as we are not living and serving in Pittsburgh during this time. Please know our hearts are indebted to you for all you have done. We can not thank you enough for your prayers, encouragement, gifts and love for our family and city over the last three years. Please continue to pray for us as we wait upon the Lord. We will always continue to remem-ber you with a grateful heart as we seek Christ daily. But as for me, God’s presence is my good. I have made the Lord God my refuge, so I can tell about all You do. Psalms 73:28 (HCSB) I know that all God does will last forever; there is no adding to it or taking from it. God works so that people will be in awe of Him. 15 Whatever is, has already been, and whatever will be, already is. God repeats what has passed. Eccl 3:14-15 (HCSB) Rev. Dear Church, Thank you so much for your Gift of $50. That made the payment for this month and gives me time to save money for next month’s payment. Thank you, Yvonne Whitaker ===================================== Fellow Christians, Outreach Mission, Inc. would like to thank you for your generous donation during the second quarter of 2015. We look forward to continued partnership as we strive to do as Jesus taught. Claire Hunt, Corresponding Secretary Outreach Mission, Inc.

Dear Friends at JHBC, On behalf of the patients at North Carolina Baptist Hospital/Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, I want to thank you for your gift to our Mother’s Day Offering/Benevolent Fund. Your gift to this offering and fund brings hope to patients who suffer from great financial need. Every dollar of your gift helps struggling patients pay their hospital bills in the name of Jesus Christ and His love. Again, Thank You for your life-changing gift and may God bless your church and it’s ministry. Leland A. Kerr Baptist Healthcare Liaison FaithHealthNC
