The Merits of Miriam Tosefta Sotah (11:1) explains that when Miriam HaNeviah passes away Be’er Miriam, the Well of Miriam, runs dry. But why did Bnei Yisrael merit to have it in the first place in her honor?
Miriam does two acts of merit by the water. First, when she is but a young girl, she makes sure to watch over Moshe when he is in
the Nile until he reaches the hands of Pharaoh’s daughter. Not only that, she follows through and brings her mother to be Moshe’s wet-nurse. The next act we see is when she leads all of the women of Bnei Yisrael in song and playing of cymbals and tambourines
after the Splitting of the Sea. Miriam is such an important and beloved leader that when G-d strikes her with Tzaraat, leprosy, the
nation decides to wait for her (Bamidbar 12:15-16). By performing righteous deeds by the water and being so entwined in the lives of
Bnei Yisrael, it is only natural that the daily necessity of water should miraculously flow in her merit.

BAYT. Please cancel your sign up and do not attend minyan if you are unable to attend for whatever reason.
Members wishing to attend an outdoor minyan at BAYT are asked to sign up in advance via SignUp Genius in order to ensure others of

children in self-isolation due to a COVID-19 case in school or a carpool;
4. you have been outside of Canada within the past 14 days;
5. you were around others (e.g., workplace, other minyan or gathering) and did not practice proper social distancing and/or masking,

Upon entry into and while inside BAYT everyone must wear a face covering such as a non-medical mask, including the ba’al tefillah (who leads prayers) and ba’al korei (who layns from the sefer Torah). Remember others may not have had a first or second vaccine.
Health Canada advises that a “non-medical mask or face covering” should:
fit securely to the head with ties or ear loops;
maintain its shape after washing and drying;

ANNOUNCEMENTS
be made of at least two layers of tightly woven material (such as cotton or linen); and
be large enough to cover the nose and mouth completely and comfortably without gaping.
Any type of plastic face shield or mouth/nose covering by itself does not replace a face covering or mask because it does not
completely cover the nose, mouth and chin with a barrier that prevents spread of respiratory droplets. If you choose to wear either a plastic face shield or mouth/nose covering, you also need to wear a mask made of at least two layers of tightly woven material large
enough to completely cover your nose and mouth without gaping.
The sole purpose of BAYT’s COVID-19 Protocols is to keep our members and guests as safe as possible while at BAYT. At this time,
BAYT cannot permit exceptions to our COVID-19 Protocols including our masking requirements, even for those fully vaccinated.
Family and Guests Returning to or Entering Canada (even if partially or fully vaccinated)
Travellers returning to Canada still must quarantine for 14 days whether arriving by air or road, whether they have been vaccinated, had a COVID infection or a negative COVID test result. Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) advises all travellers upon entry to
Canada that they must completely isolate during their 14-day quarantine period from anybody else in their household. If complete
isolation is not possible, they are advised that other household members must also quarantine for the entire 14 days.
If you have anyone in your household returning to or entering Canada from abroad who are or will be in mandatory 14-day self-
isolation, please do not sign up for or attend a minyan at BAYT unless they are completely isolated from the rest of your household
for the entirety of the 14 days quarantine period. This applies even if he/she has been vaccinated, had a COVID infection or a negative COVID test.

symptoms of COVID-19 and are awaiting a test result. BAYT will notify York Public Health of positive COVID cases brought to our
attention. Two or more positive COVID test results among attendees of one minyan at BAYT can result in declaration of a legal “outbreak” by York Region Health mandating ALL persons who were in attendance self-isolate for 14 days, even those who practiced
proper social distancing and masking.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
A bit of a potpourri this week The various divrei Torah on Korach last week reminded some of us in leadership roles how not to act. Yet, no matter how hard a leader tries, inevitably some will view him or her as a Korach of the day.
We said good-bye to Peter Salmon z’l this week, a tzaddik who taught us how to act by example. Sharing their innermost stories at the lavaya, Peter’s sons Josh, Yossi and Menachem painted a portrait of a quintessential man of faith, family, friendship, and service to others in every single thing he did. Peter will be deeply missed.

Our first Shabbat morning in the chuppah garden under Phase One of the third Provincial reopening was shehechiyanu-worthy. At long last, real smiling faces. Meaningful tefillah and song. It is time to bring back normal, to come together again. Please join us this Shabbat at 8AM (early start this week only) for BAYT’s ‘backyard minyan’ in the chuppah garden.
Even though Medinat Yisrael served as a global model how to emerge from the pandemic, Jews in Israel and galus still lost patience and bickered with one another over COVID protocols. At a time when achdus was desperately needed, we frayed at high cost unable to see the light of Israel’s massive and rapid vaccination program.
I am beyond proud, with just a few regrets, of how BAYT has handled COVID. We played by the rules. When we were not certain, we sought guidance. We never winged ‘it’ or ignored ‘it’ simply because ‘it’ was too inconvenient, potentially unpopular, or unclear. The positive feedback on our COVID protocols from the Kehillah were ratified by those in government and public health. BAYT made decisions as a collective for the collective. Yet once again, the law of inevitability made it impossible to please everyone.
BAYT emerges from COVID with restored confidence and courage. We are a proudly Orthodox community that has and will continue to thrive as part of not apart from the modern world around us. You should all be proud. And for the few who are not, once again that is just the law of inevitability.

Aside from the normative cusses and insults, many of your e-mails concern things perhaps done wrong. You already know we acknowledge our mea culpas and strive to prevent repeats. Here is how you too can help prevent repeat gaffes:
You need to first log into your BAYT account before you make any online payments on our website. If you make online payments without first logging in, your payments have to be manually matched to your account resulting in delays.
Shabbat Shalom.

WEEKLY HALACHAH How may I clean shells and peels from my Shabbat table? Generally, items which have no Shabbat function are muktzeh. Shells and peels which are suitable for animal food do have a function, and therefore they are not muktzeh. This is true even if I do not own such an animal, so long it is common in the area. Shells and peels which are not suitable for animal food may be removed in one of the following ways:
While eating, drop them in a bowl or plate which already holds items that are not muktzeh, so that the items
will be moved together;
If they are on the table, one may sweep them off via an intermediate item, like a knife. Alternatively, one may
tilt the tablecloth or table, so that they slide off.
