Trunyanvillage
The Ancient Ones
Trunyan is a village located in the district of Kintamani, Bangli, Bali, Indonesia.
Terunyan located near Lake Batur. It is known as the village of the original Balinese or the Bali Aga.
text : Suariningsih
9 THE JOURNEY JAN 2015
Suariningsih ; Young travel lover. Her passion to explore all over Indonesia and experience its beauties.
The people of Trunyan is the descendant of the original inhabitants of Bali Island, predate the Hindu-Javanese immigration wave. There for they still kept the ancient tradition held until today.
The origin of the word of Trunyan is Taru means tree, being Menyan means fragrant. This Menyan Taru tree only grows in this area, Taru menyan which later became known as Trunyan, which is believed to be the origin of the name of the village.
The village is also famous for its temple, the Pancering Jagat temple, but unfortunately visitors are not allowed inside. There are also a couple of traditional Bali Aga-style
dwellings, and a large banyan tree, which is said to be more than 1,100 years old. At Kuban sub-village close to Trunyan is a mysterious cemetery that is separated by the lake and accessible only by boat - there is no path along the steep walls of the crater rim.
What makes this village really unique is their burial tradition. Unlike other place in Bali, where Ngaben or cremation is held, here the bodies were just laid on top of a large rock and a bamboo fenced placed around it. The most common question is “how about the smell?” the answer is the taru menyan tree as mention earlier, the tree produce a
natural fragrant that neutralize the smell.Once the corpse is completely decompose,
the remaining skeleton was left where it was until a ceremony were held then it was moved.
In this village there are three graves (sema) that are intended for three different types of death. When one resident Terunyan died naturally, his body was covered with a white cloth, then consecrated, and then placed without buried under a big tree called Taru Menyan, at a location called Sema Wayah. However, if the cause of death is not natural, such as an accident, suicide, or murdered, his body will be placed in a location that is called Sema Bantas. As for
burying babies and children, or grown up but not married, will be placed at Sema Muda.
With all of its amazing culture Truyan village is worth a visit, don’t miss the chance to visit it while you are in Bali.
11 THE JOURNEY JAN 2015
Another stunning view and unbelievable panorama of Flores Island, Mount Kelimutu.
The word Kelimutu comes from the combination of the word “Keli” which means mountain and “mutu” which means to boil. Mount Kelimutu with its three colored lakes, in a local language called “Kelimutu Tiwu Telu” is one of the main volcanoes in Flores Island which is located at Pemo village, Kelimutu district – Ende regency – Flores. It is about 1.639 meters above sea level.
After the eruption in 1886 the mount remained three crater lakes with formerly distinct colors: red, blue, and white. The colors, however, have changed continually since the eruption of Mount Iya in Ende in 1969 and the changes of its colors make Kelimutu different from others and become one of the attractive places to be seen in Flores. The change of the colors unpredictable and no one could say exactly when the colors will change. Recently the colors of the lakes are: Turquoise, Dark Blue and Black. The black color lake lies at the western part while the other two lakes lies together separated by a very tight cliff.
According to local belief the colored lakes have their own meaning and also a strong mystical vibe. The Turquoise Colored Lake (Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai) is for the spirits of young souls who died at a very young age, The Dark Blue colored Lake (Tiwu Ata Polo) is known as a place for the evil spirits of the death and the Black is home to the elder spirits (Tiwu Ata Mbupu).
The mountain is a holy place for the local and a token of God’s blessings, which provides fertility to the surrounding lands.
Kelimutu begun to attract attention after being noticed by the regional Dutch military commander, B. van Suchtelen in 1915 and became more well-known after Y. Bouman wrote about the site in 1929 and was established as one of the National Parks covering 5300 Hectares, known as the Kelimutu National Park on 1992 by the Minister of forestry. Surrounded by forest with the rare floras and faunas such as palm trees, pine, mountain fig (casuarina yunghuniana), red wood (pterocarpus sp), edelweiss, hog (sus vitatus), javan porcupine (hystrix javanica), the giant rat (papagomys armandvellei), monkey (macaca fascicularis) and gerugiwa (kind of bird).
The most popular and convenient starting point to visit Mount Kelimutu is Moni village, as the best time to see the view of the crater lakes is between 06.00 to 11.00 am. Once you have been driven up the mountain roads it will be another 30 minutes walk through a lush forest full of birdsong, before entering the lake area.
Moni village is also worth to stay. You can do many nice treks in the fertile surroundings of rice fields, forests, and hills. Relax in the hot springs nearby, look at some fine Lio ikat in the market, or enjoy a performance of local dance and music or visit the traditional house of Ende people surround to complete your visit to the wonderous three colored lakes of Mount Kelimutu.

Sumbawa is an island on the east of Lombok Island. There is a local culture passed down from one generation
to another, known as “Main Jaran”. It is a horserace, but what makes it unique is that the jockey is a child.
The event itself is a favorite game among the Sumbawa people and it also attracts people from neighboring island. Horserace can be found anywhere else, but those little jockeys can only be found in a horserace in Sumbawa.
If we looked back about the history of the “Main Jaran”, horse had been used for hunting
by the people of Sumbawa. Later during the Dutch colonial times, the horserace event was arranged to celebrate a high ranked Dutch officer birthday party. As time goes by it had become a regular event to the people of Sumbawa.
The difference now is that the safety aspect is highly regarded. Some of the race rules are also well organized these days; such the horse class is divided in according to the horse size. The highest class is known as “kelas Dewasa” is where the bigger and faster horse race that adds up the excitement to the event.

As for the little jockeys, these little speedsters usually aged between six to ten years old, but don’t underestimate their size. Although they seem too young for this kind of sport, they are well trained smart and strong jockey.
No fear is reflected in their innocent face as they head to the starting line, instead they smile as if they were eager to dashing through in the dusty circuit.
Some elderly man are also seen when the racer entering the starting line, they are known by the local as “Sandro” or the Shaman. They believed that these men could
cast spell on to a horse to make it goes faster, or event causing rival horse to fail.
These days “Main Jaran” is also included to the Moyo Festival which is held annually. The inclusion is in effort to introduce this tradition to International and more Travelers visit Sumbawa each year to attend the event. An event that passed down to the people of Sumbawa by their ancestor, an event to compete skill, speed and strength in hope be the fastest boy in Sumbawa.

Ngrijang Village Archeological Artifacts. All located close to each other in the southern part of Pacitan Town.
The most visited tourism sight is the Gong Cave in Bomo Village, Punung Disctric about 37 Kilometers from the town. 300 meters deep cave with astonishing stalactites and stalagmite. The cave is discovered in 1924, it was named due to the echo made by hitting the stalactite sounds like a gong sound, a traditional Javanese musical percussion
instrument. It is known as one of the most beautiful cave in Southeast Asia, due its exotic structure and the beautiful colorful lightning gives an icing to the cake.
Another famous sight is the Klayar Beach, which located about 7 kilometers from the Gong Cave, in Sendang Village, Donorojo district. The beach morphology is shaped by thousand years of strong waves from the southern ocean. As the waves hit the beach rock it created a blow pipe effect, a shrill and water blow from the rock gaps, similar to a geyser.
Waiting for the sun to set in Klayar Beach is an excellent choice to spend evening in Pacitan Geopark. The orange light over the horizon shines the Klayar karst rock, with a white sandy beach and a young coconut will complete the unforgettable experience in Pacitan Geopark

Mesmerizing Indonesian Archipelago
Indonesia is a huge archipelago consisting of thousands of islands that stretch from the westernmost point of Sabang to the easternmost point of Merauke. From
Miangas island the northmost to Rote island the southmost, it spread to more than 17.508 islands with over 1 million km2 making Indonesia a massive sand box to explore. This huge archipelago is endowed with a beauty of diverse cultures and nature with distinctive flora and fauna.
There are eight major islands or island groups in this enormous chain. The largest landmasses consist of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan (Borneo), Sulawesi (Celebes) and
Irian Jaya (the western half of Papua New Guinea). The smaller islands fall into two main groups: the Molluccas to the northeast, and the lesser Sunda chain east of Bali. Bali is a unique island, which for a number of reasons can be put into a class of its own.
The favourable condition have attracted a great number of visitors to Indonesia. Visiting Indonesia means seeing and experienceing the unique diverse cultural and astonishing natural beauties that this country has to offer and explore.
