On this point and the entire subject o the supernatural, miracles and science, see chapters 3 and
o Alvin Plantinga, Where the Confict Really Lies: Science, Religion and Naturalism (Oxord:
Oxord University Press, 211), 12.One might wonder i there are such theologians. Is it even possible or a twentieth- or twenty-
rst-century theologian to do theology without the inuence o modernity? Perhaps not. How-
ever, some theologians seem more directly inuenced by modern moves and consciously inter-
act with them in their theologies. Tose will be the main subjects here.

Te end o modernity is a much debated concept. Tere is no absolute answer to when, or i,
modernity as the dominant cultural ethos died. However, sometime shortly aer World War II
seems to be a reasonable estimate. Aer that what has come to be called postmodernity seems
to have set in. No doubt there is much overlap.

An example is New estament theologian Rudol Bultmann (see chap. .b.), who interpreted
the New estament and theology in general with the modern presupposition that history is a
unity in the sense o a closed continuum o efects in which individual events are connected by
the succession o cause and efect. Tis continuum . . . cannot be rent by the intererence o
supernatural, transcendent powers (Existence and Faith, ed. Schubert Ogden [New York: Me-
ridian Books, 1], 212). Bultmann was not the rst or last modern theologian to recon-
struct Christian theology on the basis o that naturalistic principle. While supernatural may
not be a particularly helpul concept, because to some it implies a dualistic view o God and the
world, its denial by some modern theologians would seem to result in denial (oen by radical
reinterpretation) o crucial events o salvation history such as the resurrection.

Tis author lived and studied in Munich (1112) and looked or such a monument. I was
told there was one in the Franciscan church but could not nd it. Perhaps it had been destroyed
in the bombing o Munich during World War II.Quoted in Stephen Hawking, On the Shoulders o Giants (Philadelphia: Running Press, 22),

Interestingly, a Lutheran theologian, Andreas Osiander, wrote the preace to Copernicuss book.
However, he explained that its view o the universe was only a hypothesis meant or convenience
o calculations and was not to be interpreted as a literal picture o the planetary system. Andrew
D. White recounts Luthers vitriolic reaction to Copernicus inA History o the Warare o Sci-
ence with Teology in Christendom, 2 vols.(New York: Appleton, 1), 1:122.
