Rosary Walk through the Neighborhood of

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church

How to Pray the Rosary

1. Make the Sign of the Cross and say The Apostles’ Creed: I BELIEVE IN GOD, the Father almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth. And in Je-sus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was con-ceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into Heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the

The Rosary Walk of sidewalk shrines was completed at the end of the Year of the Rosary in the Wyandotte neigh-borhood around Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. They are reminis-cent of the holy shrines seen throughout the countryside of Po-land whose immi-grants founded the parish. Each one

has a sacred picture depicting one of the Mysteries of the Rosary, an event in the lives of Jesus and Mary. Walkers and those driving by are invited to pray the rosary or a “Hail, Mary” as they go past them. These Rosary Shrines can help bring Christ into our daily life as a permanent part of the neigh-borhood. Each Mystery includes a scripture citation for meditation.

We pray the Rosary using a string of knots or beads to count the prayers, just as other ancient religions do. It is a prayer engaging the entire per-son as the fingers move across the beads, the lips say the words, and the mind and heart meditate upon a part of Christ’s life.

The word “rosary” means “crown of roses” and honors the Virgin Mary who is often sym-bolized by the rose. It comes from the custom of offering spir-itual bouquets, gifts of prayers, in someone’s honor.

The Rosary developed over the centuries as a way for com-mon folk to join the universal Church with the prayers corre-sponding to the Psalms of the Liturgy of the Hours.

Year of the Rosary

Pope John Paul II issued the Apostolic Letter On the Most Holy Rosary (Rosarium Virginis Mariae) at the beginning of his 25th year as Pope. He recom-mends the Rosary as a means to bring Christ’s light to a world darkened by “the seductions of the drug culture, the lure of an unbridled hedonism, the temp-tation to violence, and the mani-fold expressions of meaning-lessness and despair.” (RVM 42) He entrusts the Rosary to us: “I look to all of you, brothers and sisters of every state of life, to you, Christian families, to you, the sick and elderly, and to you, young people: confidently take up the Rosary once again. Rediscover the Rosary in the light of Scripture, in harmony with the liturgy, and in the con-text of your daily lives.” (RVM 43) We hope that this Rosary Walk of sidewalk shrines helps!

Father almighty. He shall come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

2. Say the Our Father: OUR FATHER, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but de-liver us from evil. Amen.

3. Say 3 Hail Marys: HAIL MARY, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among wom-en, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

4. Say the Glory Be to the Father: GLORY BE to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. (followed by)

O MY JESUS, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell; lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy. Amen.

5. Announce the First Mystery and meditate on it while praying the Our Father

6. Say 10 Hail Marys.

7. Say the Glory Be and O my Jesus

8. Announce the next Mystery; then say the Our Father, 10 Hail Marys, Glory Be and O My Jesus.

9. Conclude by saying the Hail, Holy Queen: HAIL HOLY QUEEN, mother of mercy; our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, O most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us. And after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

Let us pray: O GOD, WHOSE only-begotten Son by His life, death and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life; grant, we beseech Thee, that by meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Conclude with the Sign of the Cross. IN THE NAME of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
