Strength Through Prayer
Where does his strength come from? We might wonder this about Jesus as we study His encounters with the
Pharisees in chapters five and six of the Gospel of Luke. In these chapters, the Pharisees try to pin down Jesus
with argument a$er argument. First they challenge Jesus for ea&ng with sinners and tax collectors (Luke
5:30). Then they ques&on Him about what they perceive to be His and His disciples’ lack of spiritual discipline
(5:33). Next they cri&cize Him for working on the Sabbath, first by plucking grains (6:2) and then by healing a
sick man (6:11). It’s one ba6le a$er another. Even though Jesus wins these ba6les, we are le$ wondering,
“What is He going to do the next &me? How long can He keep going?”
How long can He keep it up? Just as Jesus was fully God, He was “fully human in every way” (Hebrews 2:17).
Jesus “suffered when He was tempted” (Hebrews 2:18). And so if Jesus suffered in the experience of
tempta&on, as He was tempted by the devil on the mountaintop (Luke 4:1-13), then He also must have felt
beaten down and fa&gued at &mes by the relentless opposi&on He received from the Pharisees and others
who opposed God’s message. “You unbelieving and perverse genera&on. How long shall I stay with
you?” (Ma6hew 17:17). Jesus spoke these words as yet again someone didn’t believe in the power of God.
Jesus did get &red and weary in His labor for God.
How did He do it? How did He keep going? Where did His strength come from? A$er the repeated jabs and
punches from the Pharisees as outlined above, we read this: “And it came to pass, in those days Jesus went
out to a mountainside to pray and spent the night praying to God” (Luke 6:12). Yes, He may have been weary,
but Jesus did not give up hope. To get the strength He needed — to be replenished — He turned to His
Father in prayer. It had been several rounds in the ring with the Pharisees, and so to get His strength back,
Jesus spent several rounds in prayer with the Lord. A$er His &me in prayer, Jesus came back refreshed and
refilled to serve God. He started by naming the twelve disciples (6:12-16) and then by preaching a sermon in
which, among other things, He encouraged the disciples to take heart when they are being persecuted,
because great is their reward in heaven (6:23).
We see how not just here but in other instances, prayer is Jesus’ go-to for a recharge. He spends an evening
healing a village of people; the next morning where is He? — in prayer (Mark 1:35). A$er feeding the five
thousand, Jesus dismisses the crowd, and what happens next? He goes “on a mountainside by Himself to
pray” (Ma6. 14:23). Just before He goes to the cross, where does He go? He goes out “as usual to the Mount
of Olives.” To do what? To pray (Luke 22:39).
It’s at the Mount of Olives that Jesus reveals a secret about prayer. He says
to the disciples: “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into
tempta&on” (Ma6. 26:41). There are very real pressures of fa&gue and
weariness that will come and that will tempt us to give-in and give-up. But
those things are a signal to us that we need prayer more than ever. Prayer is
the an&dote.

Highlights from the Board of Elders and Board of Trustees
June Meetings
Board of Elders
What is an Elder? Titus 1:6-9 If anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination. For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

It is during Jesus’ prayer that an angel comes to give Him strength (Luke 22:43). God ministers to us through the
&me we spend with Him in prayer, giving us answers, strength, direc&on, help, and deliverance.
Some&mes we get to the end of the day or the end of the week and say, “I just need to decompress.” “I need to
lie down.” “I need to watch some TV.” All of that is OK. We need to stop some&mes and separate from our
stress. But to really make it through, to really keep on going, to truly be restored, we need something more: we
need &me with God. We need &me in prayer.
This month, do not forsake Jesus’ invita&on for you to come away with Him and pray. In prayer, He will restore
you, help you, and give you the strength you need. Amen.

The Joint Board recently voted to approve changes to our current Bylaws. The next step in the process is to present these changes to the congregation. This is for a reading only. There will not be a vote at this time. On July 1, an email will be sent out to all members whose email is on file. Copies will be available in the office for those who don’t have email. On July 7, at the fellowship hour after our 9AM service, the Bylaw committee, consisting of John Beitel, Lou Dishong, and Katie Elliott, will be available to discuss your questions or comments. If we get a favorable response from our congregation, the Bylaws will then be sent to Betsy Miller, District President for approval by the District Board. ****Please note that the updated document has been marked per District Board guidelines. The old wording is crossed out and the new wording is in red.

Worship the Lord with Us! SUMMER BIBLE BOOK CHALLENGE: THE BOOK OF GENESIS
Have you ever been assigned a book to read over the summer,
perhaps for school or a book club? Well, this summer we are challenging all of us, as the students of Jesus at Schoeneck, to read a book of the Bible together. Based on votes from the congregation, we will study the Book of
Genesis. Each Sunday this summer we will dig a little deeper into this foundational book of our faith, the book that contains the account of God’s
creation of the world, God’s promise to Abraham, God’s deliverance of the people through Joseph, and so many more pivotal and powerful stories. Along with our worship on Sundays, we challenge all of us to read our Bibles
throughout the week with the help of a reading plan that will be provided in your Sunday bulletin each week.
JOHN HUS HOLY COMMUNION
At this service on Sunday, July 7, we will celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion to commemorate the martyrdom of John Hus, the father of our Moravian faith, burned at the stake for his beliefs on July 6, 1415. Worship
with us as we renew our faith together through the Lord’s Supper.
WHITEFIELD HOUSE WORSHIP
On Sunday, July 14, we will have the opportunity to worship with our
friends from the Nazareth Moravian Church at the Whitefield House. The worship service will take place at 9:30 AM. Bring a blanket or a comfortable
lawn chair with you. There will be no Summerfest this week. In the event of rain, the 9:30 service will be held at Nazareth Moravian Church.

The Nazareth Ministerium thanks you for your gift of $2,969 towards the Social Work Program of Nazareth. The program was established in 2017. The top two reasons for contacting the Nazareth Area Social Worker are Poverty and Health Care (particularly Mental Health). The Nazareth Social Worker averages 9.5 hours per week and receives many phone calls, office visits and she also visits people in their own homes. The Social Work Committee continues to meet on a quarterly basis. We continue to re-evaluate the Social Worker program and discuss ways in which we can sustain this most needed ministry in our community. One again, thank you for your support as we seek to serve “the least of those.” A brother in Christ, Rev. Jeffrey Gehris Chair, Social Work Committee

I love all of you who supported me in my “Summer Stroll For Epilepsy.” I am so blessed to be seizure free for 13 years on the 19th of June. I gave the foundation $2,193 thanks to my family, church family, and friends. It is the most I have ever raised. It will allow for the study on this NASTY illness to continue. I ask everyone to please keep me in your thoughts and prayers.

From the Trustees:
Please help keep
our kitchen clean! We all share a communal kitchen and need to take responsibility for its upkeep. Wash and dry dishes and other items and return them to their proper place. Drawers and cabinets are labeled with their contents. Dispose of any unused food items. Clear counters and keep them clean. Kitchen upkeep is not the duty of one person or group. By working together, we can assure a clean space for all.

Treasure Seekers
The summer months at Schoeneck are always exciting ones for the children. Sunday school does not "shut down" in the summer, instead we offer a summer program for the children called
Summerfest from June 16 to Sept 1(excluding July 14). The Summerfest program is for all children ages 3 through grade 5. After the children's message during worship, the children will to go Room 2 for their Summerfest class. This year our theme is Treasure Seekers. The kids will go on an adventure and discover who God is. Our summer mission project will be for Support the Troops, Inc. We will be collecting hygiene and snack items for soldiers care packages. A list of items will be posted outside room 2. This year we will have t-shirts for the children that attend at least 8 weeks of Summerfest. The t-shirts will be given out on Rally Day Sept 8. If you are interested in leading or assisting during this time, please contact Ann-Louise Taylor or JoAnn Heckman

Greetings!
Well, by now school is out, gradua&ons are over and we look forward to 4th
of July, VBS, Camp Hope, picnics, carnivals
and many fun outdoor ac&vi&es.
We will be offering CPR classes again; a signup sheet will be posted.
For the future, we are planning a Bereavement Class at Schoeneck, more details will follow.
My topic for this month is: Hospice Myths and Facts:
Informaon from Compassus, Hospice & Palliave Care
Quality end-of-life care isn’t about how you die; it’s about how you live.
While more than 1.5 million people were cared for by the na&on’s 5,800 hospice programs last year, many myths exist
about hospice that deter people from seeking out this compassionate system of care.
Myth: I want to focus on life & living, and hospice is about death.
Fact: Hospice is about life. Hospice is about how you want to live and planning ways to manage pain & symptoms
so you can set your priori&es and live as fully as possible. Hospice provides a team to help you and your
family cope with the physical, emo&onal, social aspects of a terminal illness.
Myth: Hospice care is expensive and will require co-payments.
Fact: Hospice is 100% covered by Medicare/Medicaid and most private insurance companies. All medicines and
medical equipment related to terminal diagnosis are fully covered. Coverage also includes oversight by a
medical director in collabora&on with the pa&ent’s primary physician, as well as the hospice team, nurses,
social worker, chaplains, hospice aides, 24 hour on-call nursing service, and much more.
Myth: Pain is just expected as part of the dying process:
Fact: Hospice doctors, nurses, and others are specially trained to control each person’s pain, while s&ll keeping
the pa&ent awake and alert whenever possible.
Myth: When people are placed in hospice, they die within days:
Fact: Pa&ents admi6ed to hospice have a terminal diagnosis with life expectancy of six months or less. While
most of the pa&ents die while receiving hospice, some live longer and many have a be6er quality of life with
help from hospice team.
Myth: Hospice care won’t allow me or my family to be involved in making decisions about treatment.
Fact: Hospice puts pa&ents and families in the center of care.
Myth: I have to go to hospice to receive care.
Fact: Hospice is not a place but a philosophy of care. Hospice and pallia&ve care is available in nursing homes,
assisted living facili&es- wherever the pa&ent lives and calls home.
Myth: If I choose hospice I am giving up, and I can no longer go to my physician.
Fact: Hospice is not about giving up. With the hospice team in place, you may not
need to see your doctor. However, if you feel the need, the hospice team
can arrange this.
Our next blood pressure screening will be: July 21st
