Chapters 4-6• The living conditions at Mrs. Jukneine’s boarding

house are terrible, and the family decides to buy a house. The house is 2 miles from the packinghouse, which means the family has to pay to take the trolley to work every day.

• A neighbor tells them the history of the house, and explains about paying interest to the bank. The family realizes that they will have to pay much more than they first believed.

• Ona and one of the children, Stanislovas, find jobs to help pay for all the unexpected expenses.

Chapter 7• The flashback ends, and

we catch up with Jurgis and Ona after their wedding. They are in a lot of debt.

• They experience their first Chicago winter. They cannot afford coal for a heater or money for the trolley to work.

• Antanas gets very sick.

Chapter 10• The long, hard winter

ends, but spring brings new and unexpected problems.

• Marija gets a new, and more difficult, job.

• Ona becomes pregnant, and gives birth to a baby boy. They name him Antanas in memory of Jurgis’s father.

Chapter 11• The family opens its first

bank account. Shortly after that, there is a “run on the bank” and Jurgis and Ona nearly loose all their money.

• Jurgis has an accident at work and hurts his ankle. He cannot walk and must stay home from work.

Chapter 12• Jurgis is unable to work

for 3 weeks after his injury. Jurgis cannot find a new job.

• Stanislovas gets caught in a snowstorm on his way home from work, and two of his fingers get stuck together. He developed a fear of the snow, and Jurgis beats him every day.

• Ona’s behavior changes. She sometimes stays out all night without telling anyone where she is. She is nervous and cries a lot.
