C l o s i n g Key n o t eUpdate: Midwest Multistate Division & the American Nurses Association
Our closing keynote presentation on Sat-urday will be an update on the Midwest Multistate Division (MW MSD) and the American Nurses Association (ANA). Jill Kliethermes, MSN, RN, FNP-BC, leader of the MW MSD, will provide an overview of the region and discuss the 2015-16 ANA strategic plan and goals. She will help us understand the role of nursing beyond Kansas.
Opening KeynoteAll Stressed Up and Nowhere to Go
Wichita’s own humorist Jae Pierce-Baba, OTR, will deliver our opening key-note address on Friday with “All Stressed Up and Nowhere to Blow.” She will help us unwind our tension, leaving us in-formed about the role stress plays in self care as well as health care. We will learn about the five early signs of over-stress in caring for self and patients in the healthcare environment. She will help us identify stress triggers and ex-plore how positive emotions and humor can reduce our stress and boost our im-munity system. Jae will demonstrate how laughter can help us de-stress and light up our brains’ pleasure centers. What a great way to kick-off our annual membership assembly!

13 THEKANSASNURSE|MAY-JUNE015
A year of transition is about to conclude as we move toward our goal of changing the landscape of the Kansas State Nurses Association. With an adoption of Regional Bylaws at this year’s Membership Assembly in Wichita, we will turn the page on another chapter of the ongoing saga that is our Association. The Kansas State Nurses As-sociation (KSNA) has gone through transitions through-out its history. I have witnessed and even participated in several of them during my tenure as a member. In preparation for the writing of this report I found myself reflecting upon my career as a Registered Nurse (RN). In retrospect, I realize that my life’s experience as a nurse has been directly tied to my experiences as a member of KSNA. This realization has made me even more dedicated to the future of KSNA as we transition into our new re-gional structure. My twenty year career as a RN would not have been nearly as rewarding if not for my participation in our organization. Learning and developing are life-long processes and my member-ship in our professional nursing association has provided many opportunities for me to develop a bigger picture of nursing and health care, overall. My membership has lead me to an increased awareness of nursing issues and support for collective actions among nurses in general, but especially in Kansas. It has provided a venue to explore trends and concerns facing our profession and networking opportunities to connect them with peers, mentors, and nursing leaders. Your Board of Directors, Association Committees and Office Manager have had an eventful year since the last Membership Assembly. The majority of activities have focused on the transition to regions but there continue to
be many ongoing housekeeping activities as well. Members of the board have presented regionalization updates in several locales throughout the state. In ad-dition to these outlying meetings, your President-elect, Angella Herrman, has held Go To Meetings on-line to present regionalization updates so that all members can be informed. These outreaches will continue through the Membership Assembly. In conjunction with these meet-ings, the Bylaws Committee has been busy vetting Re-gional Bylaws in preparation of bringing a new document before the Membership Assembly in Wichita this October. The KSNA continues to be a member of the Midwest
Multistate Division (MW MSD) of the American Nurses Association. This affiliation has provided oppor-tunity to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the day-to-day opera-tions of the Asso-ciation through the sharing of resourc-es. State Nurses Associations (SNA) included in
the MW MSD are Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and North Dakota. These associations have joined together and are utilizing skill sets and the expertise of each oth-er’s staff members. We are gaining support in Kansas by jointly utilizing a phone system within the MW MSD that saves on our phone expenses. We have recently improved the safety and security of our computer data by taking advantage of a secure cloud-based backup system that will secure our data away from the actual computers in the KSNA office. American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) approved continuing nursing education opportu-nities that have been in place over the past year, and these programs will increase in number in the future, because of the relationship KSNA has with its MW MSD partner. Contracted services entered into with MONA by the

KSNA Board of Directors have come about over the past year. These services include month-to-month bookkeep-ing and check writing (providing fiduciary oversight and security) and executive services related to updating of policies and procedures of the of the association provided by Jill Kliethermes, MONA Chief Executive Officer and Leader of the MW MSD. Ms. Kliethermes also pro-vides as needed day-to-day support for the KSNA Office Manager, Michele Reese, and is assisting in the develop-ment of a formalized evaluation procedure for current and future staff members including a Director of State Affairs position. The Director of State Affairs opportunity is being advertised on our online Career Center in addition to the e-mail blast that has already been disseminated to KSNA members. The e-mail was sent to solicit current members who might be interested in ap-plying for the part-time (20 hour/week) contract position. I would be negligent in not recognizing and thanking our solitary and virtually irreplaceable office manager, Michele Reese, for all that she does for our association on a daily basis. She is, in my estimation, the glue that holds our organization together day-to-day. Michele has an enormous task and handles it with grace and dedication. Her adventures as the sole person at our office in Topeka, on a daily basis, would provide all one would need to write a book. Just this year she has put up with leaky pipes, a dead bat in the office, and having the locks changed. Michele was provided an opportunity by the board to attend a conference in Florida related to the “Your Membership” database and website software that the association utilizes. She broadened her skill set by attending this conference and has taken over the daily operation of our website and membership database. In addition to these new and expanding duties, she continues
to produce a quality Association journal in The Kansas Nurse. The annual Legislative Conference continues to be a success with the coordination efforts put forth by this dedicated staff member. Her position has placed her in di-rect daily communication with our members as well as an ambassador to those who are not members or even nurses. She is often the first impression that people receive when making inquiries of our Association. What a first impres-sion! Thank you, Michele! I started this article speaking of transitions and want to end it by continuing that theme. With the writing of this piece, the transition from President of the Association
to becoming its Past-President begins January 1. My tenure as your President has offered an opportunity to pre-side during interesting times in in providing our nation’s health care and our own state services. We have seen continued efforts by our APRN brothers and sisters to gain more autonomy and by doing so, increase the ability of the citizens of our state to access qual-
ity and affordable care. The process of changing from many districts to fewer and larger regions has been a long one with the actual change within sight. Just because the change occurs doesn’t mean the work is done. It will take all of us networking and learning together to understand what the change will actually mean. Can we make more than just a paper change? Will we actually revitalize our organization by providing more value to more nurses and thereby enhancing the current membership? As an avid baseball fan, one of my favorite movies of all time is The Field of Dreams. The theme of the movie simply stated is, “If you build it, they will come.” In the movie a baseball field is built in an Iowa farmer’s corn-field. He spent time building the field on his own and it took time away from his family and farming. When it

was completed, he dreamed that baseball legends from the past would come to play ball as it was originally meant to be played, for the love of it. The field wasn’t fancy and it didn’t have corporate suites etc., but the builder’s love of baseball resulted in his accomplishing this goal. How does this analogy relate to KSNA? I truly believe that if we, as members, sincerely love our profession, we will do what it takes to share our love of the profession with each other by welcoming new nurses and including them in the networking and fellow-ship of our organization. We need to reach out to those nurses that we work with each day and share with them positive experiences related to our activity and participa-tion in KSNA. By utilizing those current districts in each new region that have been historically active and strong as hubs or centers of the new regions, we progress toward successful regions as well. As we move forward with our transition to regions, we should remember from where we have come and bring

the best of our organization along with us in the transition. Let us continue to seek ways in which to strengthen our current and future connections with peers, to reach out to others in our organization by providing mentorship, and in doing so, these two efforts will energize new member to join us in becoming nurse leaders for the future of nursing in Kansas. Now, I am even more excited about our future as a viable organization to be the “Voice and Vision for Nurses in Kansas” than I was when I began my tenure as your President. Adding to my excitement is the knowledge that our next President, Angella Herrman, is as committed to our future, if not more so, than I am. She is a dynamic leader and will move the organization forward by leaps and bounds! I look forward to seeing you all at the Member-ship Assembly in Wichita.
