Introduction

Most of us have never lived in a palace. Most

of us have never met a king. And in this

modern age of democracy and dictators the

idea of a benevolent king who lovingly looks

out over his kingdom is a distant memory of

fairy tales in a land far, far away.

So, when we think of Jesus- our soon and

coming King- we are at a terrible

disadvantage. Especially those of us who are

most connected to a democratic kind of

government structure. We ask the question

ad nauseam of who has the right to rule over

us. And every 4 years or so in our ultimate

display of wisdom we decide who will be our

next elected leader. And we decide it 51% to

49%. Where the losers plot the next 4 years

about how to overthrow the rule of the

president.

Wisdom about money seems to be

everywhere or at so it would seem. Financial

Advisors on every corner desirous of helping

you understand how to best manage your

money. Now don’t get us wrong we think

there is wisdom in getting wise counsel from

seasoned professionals. But, to understand

what the Lord thinks about money is even

better.

This simple study is a collection of verses from

the Bible (NIV Version) in the Gospels. We

have identified verses that talk about money

or use money as an object lesson or could be

applied to money. We have identified a lot of

verses, but you may find a few more that we

missed.

Jesus speaks about so many topics but as you

will discover He reserves a special place to

talk about money and possessions. But most

importantly He uncovers what is lurking

under the surface of our hearts. And

challenges us to serve God rather than

money. He knew then, like we are

discovering now, that how a man manages his

heart related to money will determine much

about him. In fact, Jesus says that we must

choose between God and money. We cannot

serve both.

Listen to what Jesus says in Matthew 6:24

☺� Matthew 6: 24 “No one can serve

two masters. Either he will hate the one

and love the other, or he will be devoted

to the one and despise the other. You

cannot serve both God and Money.

At the left of each verse there is a blank. In

the footer there is a list of potential

categories that verse falls into. All you need

to do is fill in the blanks! Note: For most

verses there will be more than one category.

For example, the passage above speaks of

Happiness (☺) and Sadness (�), depending

on who you decide to serve: God or Money.

Word of Warning: This is not necessarily an

easy study. Wisdom is something that you

have to search for diligently as for a hidden

treasure. You have to get your hands dirty.

You have to think and process the sayings in

order to gain understanding. In our day of

microwave thinking, wisdom gathering is

more like a crock pot. It takes time! But oh, is

it worth the trouble!

received their reward in full. 3 But when you

Father, who sees what is done in secret, will

out with the following instructions: “Do not

sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have

leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have

received, freely give. 9 Do not take along any

gold or silver or copper in your belts; 10 take

enter, search for some worthy person there

and stay at his house until you leave. 12 As

you enter the home, give it your greeting. 13

If the home is deserving, let your peace rest

your words, shake the dust off your feet when

you leave that home or town. 15 I tell you the

truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and

Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for

that town. 16 I am sending you out like sheep

among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as

snakes and as innocent as doves.

receives me, and he who receives me receives

the parable of the sower means: 19 When

anyone hears the message about the kingdom

and does not understand it, the evil one

comes and snatches away what was sown in

his heart. This is the seed sown along the

path. 20 The one who received the seed that

fell on rocky places is the man who hears the

word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But

since he has no root, he lasts only a short

time. When trouble or persecution comes

because of the word, he quickly falls away. 22

The one who received the seed that fell

among the thorns is the man who hears the

word, but the worries of this life and the

deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it

unfruitful. 23 But the one who received the

seed that fell on good soil is the man who

hears the word and understands it. He

produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or

thirty times what was sown.”

heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When

a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his

joy went and sold all he had and bought that

sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘Honor

your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who

curses his father or mother must be put to

otherwise have received from me is a gift

devoted to God,’ 6 he is not to ‘honor his

father’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of

God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You

hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he

prophesied about you: 8 “ ‘These people

honor me with their lips, but their hearts are

far from me. 9 They worship me in vain; their

teachings are but rules taught by men.’”

_____Matthew 15: 32 Jesus called his

disciples to him and said, “I have compassion

for these people; they have already been with

me three days and have nothing to eat. I do

not want to send them away hungry, or they

may collapse on the way.” 33 His disciples

answered, “Where could we get enough

bread in this remote place to feed such a

crowd?” 34 “How many loaves do you have?”

Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied, “and a few

small fish.” 35 He told the crowd to sit down

on the ground. 36 Then he took the seven

loaves and the fish, and when he had given

thanks, he broke them and gave them to the

disciples, and they in turn to the people. 37

They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the

disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken

pieces that were left over. 38 The number of

those who ate was four thousand, besides

women and children. 39 After Jesus had sent

the crowd away, he got into the boat and

went to the vicinity of Magadan.

_____Matthew 16: 24 Then Jesus said to his

disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he

must deny himself and take up his cross and

follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save his

life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for

man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits

his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange

for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to

come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and

then he will reward each person according to

what he has done. 28 I tell you the truth,

some who are standing here will not taste

death before they see the Son of Man coming

in his kingdom.”

disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors

of the two-drachma tax came to Peter and

asked, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple

tax?” 25 “Yes, he does,” he replied. When

Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first

to speak. “What do you think, Simon?” he

asked. “From whom do the kings of the earth

collect duty and taxes—from their own sons

or from others?” 26 “From others,” Peter

answered. “Then the sons are exempt,” Jesus

said to him. 27 “But so that we may not

offend them, go to the lake and throw out

your line. Take the first fish you catch; open

its mouth and you will find a four-drachma

coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax

and yours.”

Matthew 18: 23 “Therefore, the kingdom of

heaven is like a king who wanted to settle

accounts with his servants. 24 As he began

the settlement, a man who owed him ten

thousand talents was brought to him. 25

Since he was not able to pay, the master

ordered that he and his wife and his children

and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.

26 “The servant fell on his knees before him.

‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will

pay back everything.’ 27 The servant’s master

took pity on him, canceled the debt and let

him go. 28 “But when that servant went out,

he found one of his fellow servants who owed

him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him and

began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe




me!’ he demanded. 29 “His fellow servant fell

to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with

me, and I will pay you back.’ 30 “But he

refused. Instead, he went off and had the

man thrown into prison until he could pay the

debt. 31 When the other servants saw what

had happened, they were greatly distressed

and went and told their master everything

that had happened. 32 “Then the master

called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he

said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because

you begged me to. 33 Shouldn’t you have had

mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on

you?’ 34 In anger his master turned him over

to the jailers to be tortured, until he should

pay back all he owed. 35 “This is how my

heavenly Father will treat each of you unless

you forgive your brother from your heart.”

_____Matthew 19: 16 Now a man came up to

Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing

must I do to get eternal life?” 17 “Why do you

ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied.

“There is only One who is good. If you want to

enter life, obey the commandments.” 18

“Which ones?” the man inquired. Jesus

replied, “ ‘Do not murder, do not commit

adultery, do not steal, do not give false

testimony, 19 honor your father and mother,’

and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’” 20 “All

these I have kept,” the young man said.

“What do I still lack?” 21 Jesus answered, “If

you want to be perfect, go, sell your

possessions and give to the poor, and you will

have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow

me.” 22 When the young man heard this, he

went away sad, because he had great wealth.

23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you

the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the

kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is

easier for a camel to go through the eye of a

needle than for a rich man to enter the

kingdom of God.” 25 When the disciples

heard this, they were greatly astonished and

asked, “Who then can be saved?” 26 Jesus

looked at them and said, “With man this is

impossible, but with God all things are

possible.”

_____Matthew 20:1 “For the kingdom of

heaven is like a landowner who went out

early in the morning to hire men to work in

his vineyard. 2 He agreed to pay them a

denarius for the day and sent them into his

vineyard. 3 “About the third hour he went out

and saw others standing in the marketplace

doing nothing. 4 He told them, ‘You also go

and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you

whatever is right.’ 5 So they went. “He went

out again about the sixth hour and the ninth

hour and did the same thing. 6 About the

eleventh hour he went out and found still

others standing around. He asked them, ‘Why

have you been standing here all day long

doing nothing?’ 7 “ ‘Because no one has hired

us,’ they answered. “He said to them, ‘You

also go and work in my vineyard.’ 8 “When

evening came, the owner of the vineyard said

to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay

them their wages, beginning with the last

ones hired and going on to the first.’ 9 “The

workers who were hired about the eleventh

hour came and each received a denarius. 10

So when those came who were hired first,

they expected to receive more. But each one

of them also received a denarius. 11 When




they received it, they began to grumble

against the landowner. 12 ‘These men who

were hired last worked only one hour,’ they

said, ‘and you have made them equal to us

who have borne the burden of the work and

the heat of the day.’ 13 “But he answered one

of them, ‘Friend, I am not being unfair to you.

Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? 14

Take your pay and go. I want to give the man

who was hired last the same as I gave you. 15

Don’t I have the right to do what I want with

my own money? Or are you envious because I

am generous?’ 16 “So the last will be first,

and the first will be last.”

_____Matthew 21: 12 Jesus entered the

temple area and drove out all who were

buying and selling there. He overturned the

tables of the money changers and the

benches of those selling doves. 13 “It is

written,” he said to them, “ ‘My house will be

called a house of prayer,’ but you are making

it a ‘den of robbers.’”

_____Matthew 22: 15 Then the Pharisees

went out and laid plans to trap him in his

words. 16 They sent their disciples to him

along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they

said, “we know you are a man of integrity and

that you teach the way of God in accordance

with the truth. You aren’t swayed by men,

because you pay no attention to who they

are. 17 Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it

right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” 18 But

Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You

hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? 19

Show me the coin used for paying the tax.”

They brought him a denarius, 20 and he asked

them, “Whose portrait is this? And whose

inscription?” 21 “Caesar’s,” they replied. Then

he said to them, “Give to Caesar what is

Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” 22 When

they heard this, they were amazed. So they

left him and went away.

_____Matthew 23: 23 “Woe to you, teachers

of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You

give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and

cummin. But you have neglected the more

important matters of the law—justice, mercy

and faithfulness. You should have practiced

the latter, without neglecting the former. 24

You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but

swallow a camel. 25 “Woe to you, teachers of

the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You

clean the outside of the cup and dish, but

inside they are full of greed and self-

indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the

inside of the cup and dish, and then the

outside also will be clean.

_____Matthew 25: 14 “Again, it will be like a

man going on a journey, who called his

servants and entrusted his property to them.

15 To one he gave five talents of money, to

another two talents, and to another one

talent, each according to his ability. Then he

went on his journey. 16 The man who had

received the five talents went at once and put

his money to work and gained five more. 17

So also, the one with the two talents gained

two more. 18 But the man who had received

the one talent went off, dug a hole in the

ground and hid his master’s money.




19 “After a long time the master of those

servants returned and settled accounts with

them. 20 The man who had received the five

talents brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he

said, ‘you entrusted me with five talents. See,

I have gained five more.’ 21 “His master

replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant!

You have been faithful with a few things; I will

put you in charge of many things. Come and

share your master’s happiness!’ 22 “The man

with the two talents also came. ‘Master,’ he

said, ‘you entrusted me with two talents; see,

I have gained two more.’ 23 “His master

replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant!

You have been faithful with a few things; I will

put you in charge of many things. Come and

share your master’s happiness!’ 24 “Then the

man who had received the one talent came.

‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard

man, harvesting where you have not sown

and gathering where you have not scattered

seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid

your talent in the ground. See, here is what

belongs to you.’ 26 “His master replied, ‘You

wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I

harvest where I have not sown and gather

where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well

then, you should have put my money on

deposit with the bankers, so that when I

returned I would have received it back with

interest. 28 “ ‘Take the talent from him and

give it to the one who has the ten talents. 29

For everyone who has will be given more, and

he will have an abundance. Whoever does not

have, even what he has will be taken from

him. 30 And throw that worthless servant

outside, into the darkness, where there will

be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

_____Matthew 25: 31 “When the Son of Man

comes in his glory, and all the angels with

him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly

glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered

before him, and he will separate the people

one from another as a shepherd separates

sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34

“Then the King will say to those on his right,

‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father;

take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared

for you since the creation of the world. 35 For

I was hungry and you gave me something to

to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me

in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I

was sick and you looked after me, I was in

the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when

did we see you hungry and feed you, or

thirsty and give you something to drink? 38

When did we see you a stranger and invite

you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39

When did we see you sick or in prison and go

to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘I tell you

the truth, whatever you did for one of the

least of these brothers of mine, you did for

me.’ 41 “Then he will say to those on his left,

‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into

the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his

angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me

nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me

nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you

did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you

did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and

you did not look after me.’ 44 “They also will

answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or

thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick

or in prison, and did not help you?’ 45 “He

will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you




did not do for one of the least of these, you

did not do for me.’ 46 “Then they will go away

to eternal punishment, but the righteous to

_____Matthew 26: 6 While Jesus was in

Bethany in the home of a man known as

Simon the Leper, 7 a woman came to him

with an alabaster jar of very expensive

this waste?” they asked. 9 “This perfume

could have been sold at a high price and the

money given to the poor.” 10 Aware of this,

Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering

this woman? She has done a beautiful thing

When she poured this perfume on my body,

she did it to prepare me for burial. 13 I tell

you the truth, wherever this gospel is

preached throughout the world, what she has

done will also be told, in memory of her.”

Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went

to the chief priests 15 and asked, “What are

_____Matthew 27: 3 When Judas, who had

betrayed him, saw that Jesus was

condemned, he was seized with remorse and

your responsibility.” 5 So Judas threw the

money into the temple and left. Then he went

away and hanged himself. 6 The chief priests

picked up the coins and said, “It is against the

blood money.” 7 So they decided to use the

money to buy the potter’s field as a burial

place for foreigners. 8 That is why it has been

called the Field of Blood to this day. 9 Then

what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet

was fulfilled: “They took the thirty silver coins,

the price set on him by the people of Israel,

10 and they used them to buy the potter’s

field, as the Lord commanded me.”

_____Matthew 28: 11 While the women were

on their way, some of the guards went into

the city and reported to the chief priests

everything that had happened. 12 When the

chief priests had met with the elders and

devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large

sum of money, 13 telling them, “You are to

say, ‘His disciples came during the night and

stole him away while we were asleep.’ 14 If

this report gets to the governor, we will

satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” 15

So the soldiers took the money and did as

they were instructed. And this story has been

widely circulated among the Jews to this very

stands for those who hear, but as they go on

their way they are choked by life’s worries,

riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.

15 But the seed on good soil stands for those

with a noble and good heart, who hear the

word, retain it, and by persevering produce a

crop.

“Meanwhile, the older son was in the field.

When he came near the house, he heard

to go in. So his father went out and pleaded

never gave me even a young goat so I could

son of yours who has squandered your

property with prostitutes comes home, you

the father said, ‘you are always with me, and

everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to

celebrate and be glad, because this brother of

yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost

tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for

yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will

father, send Lazarus to my father’s house, 28

for I have five brothers. Let him warn them,

so that they will not also come to this place of

torment.’ 29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have

Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to




them.’ 30 “ ‘No, father Abraham,’ he said,

‘but if someone from the dead goes to them,

they will repent.’ 31 “He said to him, ‘If they

do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they

will not be convinced even if someone rises

from the dead.’”

money on deposit, so that when I came back,

I could have collected it with interest?’ 24

“Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his

mina away from him and give it to the one

that to everyone who has, more will be given,

but as for the one who has nothing, even

what he has will be taken away. 27 But those

_____John 13: 21 After he had said this, Jesus

was troubled in spirit and testified, “I tell you

the truth, one of you is going to betray me.”

22 His disciples stared at one another, at a

loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One

of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was

reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter

motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him

which one he means.” 25 Leaning back

against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”

26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I

will give this piece of bread when I have

dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece

of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of

Simon. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread,

Satan entered into him. “What you are about

to do, do quickly,” Jesus told him, 28 but no

one at the meal understood why Jesus said

this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the

money, some thought Jesus was telling him to

buy what was needed for the Feast, or to give

something to the poor. 30 As soon as Judas

had taken the bread, he went out. And it was

night.

_____John 16: 23 In that day you will no

longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth,

my Father will give you whatever you ask in

my name. 24 Until now you have not asked

for anything in my name. Ask and you will

receive, and your joy will be complete.
