but he quickly adjusted to the change.
“Within 48 hours, Jetta made himself
right at home,” recalls Tom. “He’s
doing very well and we have really
bonded.”
Having volunteered for 8 years as an
adoption
coordinator
for a local
basset
hound
rescue, Tom
knows a lot
about the
importance
of finding
homes for pets in need. He also
understands the importance of
matching a pet’s personality to the
right person or family and
surroundings. Tom, like the foster
parents at PAN, sees the value in
carefully screening adoption applicants
to ensure that each pet is placed into
the best home possible.

Thomas Rodwell says he’s pretty sure
that Jetta is “one of the best cats” he’s
ever owned.
Jetta came to PAN as a single orphan
kitty and became a favorite of many
customers. He was placed a few times
with families who seemed to be a good
fit, but sadly, the adoptions didn’t work
out. It seemed Jetta just couldn’t find
his fur-ever home.
Jetta’s luck changed the day Tom
walked into the PAN center. The eldest
of Tom’s two cats had recently passed
away and so he was looking for a new
buddy.
“I kept telling myself ‘no more ani-
mals’,” recalls Tom, who also owns four
dogs. But it was hard not to fall in love
with Jetta, who has a very affectionate
personality and is also dog-friendly!
Jetta arrived at his new home with Tom
the following weekend. New
environments can be quite scary for
animals, and Jetta was timid at first,
Jetta’s rough start in finding a
permanent home is finally over now
that he has settled in with Tom and the
other pets. The trial period officially
came to an end when PAN received an
email from Tom, stating “it’s been a
week, and I’m sorry to say that you
won’t be getting Jetta back!”

Foster Homes Needed

takes a special person
to be a foster parent,
do you have what it
takes? The Foster

found on our website
and can be mailed to
or dropped off at our
center.
Have You Met Julie Daurizio?
Julie is one of the special ladies who helped found Pet Adoption Network
and is also one of our wonderful cat foster moms.
Before she became involved in cat rescue, Julie graduated from St. Mary’s
Hospital School of Nursing, worked at Rochester General Hospital, raised
four children and then became a small engine mechanic.
In the mid 1990s, Julie started fostering dogs and later added cats to her
skillset. She served as Secretary on the PAN Board of Directors for several
years and has fostered about 200 cats
(and counting!)
Julie’s niche is in crisis care for PAN’s
cats with special health needs. She
also keeps track of admissions and
adoptions, fostering, volunteering at
the adoption center and helping with
whatever needs to be done!
PAN is very lucky to have Julie as an
active volunteer.

Tips on Keeping Your Cat Healthy & Happy This Summer (taken from http://www.cat-world.com)
With summer fast approaching, now is a good time to look at some summertime tips which will help make life a bit more comfortable and safer for our feline family members. Heat stroke and dehydration are real dangers!
Safety: Never leave your cat in the car, and always ensure that you allow your cat access to cool rooms in your home. Make sure that all windows that will be open to let in cool air have proper and secure screening. Cool down towels in the freezer and then place in your cat’s bed for them to lie on.
Water: Make sure that your cat has a constant supply of fresh drinking water. You should try to have several bowls scattered around the house. You can even put a few ice cubes in their water bowl!
Sun Protection: On hot days keep your cat indoors. If your cat does go outside and is fair skinned, apply sunscreen to it's nose and ears to avoid sunburn. Always provide your cat with adequate shelter from the sun outdoors.
Fleas: Fleas are a problem throughout the year but they are especially bad during the summer months. Ensure you use a good quality flea control product on your cat and don't forget to treat the environment too! Your veterinarian will be able to advise you on the best products to use.
Ticks: Ticks are also a problem, especially in the summer months, and can result in death. It is important to ensure that you thoroughly check your cat for ticks. Even indoor cats are susceptible to fleas and ticks!
Elderly & Obese Cats: Senior and overweight cats are far less tolerant of the heat, therefore it is even more important to ensure they are kept cool.
Kate has spent most of her life
helping animals in need. As one of
the founders, foster moms and the
President of PAN, Kate works
tirelessly to ensure that the needs of
our adoptable pets are met and that
things are running smoothly.
In the years since PAN’s humble
beginnings, Kate has served as
Foster Home Coordinator, Volunteer
Coordinator, Media Contact,
Veterinarian Recruiter, and has
helped in procuring necessary items
and services for PAN. Did we men-
tion that she also works full time and
has several of her own pets?!
In 35 years of rescue service, Kate
has fostered hundreds of homeless
pets and has changed the lives of
countless animals and their adoption
families. She recognizes that many
times when an animal falls through the
cracks, she and PAN are it’s only hope.
The reward in seeing a pet find its new,
permanent home has always inspired
Kate to continue her work and
promote the mission of PAN.
She knows that there will always be
more animals that need help, and
that there are “highs and lows” in
this line of duty. There are also
many sleepless nights worrying
about the animals’ welfare.
“It’s always hard work, but when an
animal goes out the door with
someone to care for them, I think
phew! That’s one more I don’t have
to worry about anymore,” says Kate.
In addition to her work and
dedication to animals in need, Kate
enjoys gardening and spending time
with friends.
A Note From Martha’s Foster Mom… Martha continues to surprise me each and every day.
She had her 1st Birthday on April 10th. The experts said she would only survive
between 6 months to 1 year at the most because of a significant heart murmur. I am so glad
they were wrong! She
eats like there's no tomorrow
and runs through the house like she is
being chased by a pack of wolves. Her
black coat is like silk and her eyes are
bright and full of eagerness. Every night at
9:30 she jumps up onto her foster Dad's
lap and insists that he give her the even-
ing snacks!! After such a long, cold winter,
we are preparing to go back to camping
on the weekends once again. This is
where she gets to watch the chipmunks
and hummingbirds that come to the
feeder that is near her catwalk. I think this
is when she is most happy...dreaming
that she is chasing the little furry and
feathered critters that come to visit. I
thank God every day for giving us more
time with her.
