tOUCHLINETALK A warm welcome to Mole Valley FC, players and management for this Tuesday night fixture. Not a lot of football has been played through-out the league in recent weeks due to the English winter weather. We have been doing many different things in training with the clubs board helping us use all available resources. But the lads have responded well and it seems to have brought everyone closer together as a unit

We go into tonight's fixture with a bit of confidence having won our previous two games. On Saturday we played our local rivals Sheerwater. It saw us come out on top winning four nil. A fully deserved victory, in which man for man we worked very hard and won the battles that we needed to. I manage to grab a hat trick, my first one for the club and a debutant goal from Ross Murray sealed us the points. On this note I'd like to welcome Ross Murray and Dante Aligheiri to the club. We wish you both every success at Redding Way and The Knappers and feel your experience will only help us in going forward. Enjoy the game Ruggs

Combined Counties League Division One, Saturday 12th January, The Orchard Kick Off 3.00pm

After four consecutive League defeats without scoring, Knaphill secured a welcome and valuable three points in the 2-1 win over Feltham on Saturday. It gave the visitors a league double over their opponents by recording their first win since the two teams last met at Redding Way back in November, when Knaphill won with the same scoreline. Inevitably there were changes in the Knaphill side for their second game of the new year, but it was quite a competitive start to the game, although neither side showed signs of taking overall control, and very little as far as direct shots targeted on goal were concerned. But it was Knaphill who were to open the scoring on the half hour mark to break the deadlock when they were awarded a penalty following a handball in the 18 yard box. Phil Ruggles duly despatched the spot kick to give the visitors a rarity this season of taking the lead. They held onto their single goal, and went close to increasing it when Luke Taylor struck a free kick from which the keeper tipped over the bar on the stroke of halftime. Going into the second half Knaphill needed to keep plugging away to enhance on that 1-0 advantage, and the first effort of the half saw a Ruggles header flash wide of the post. Knaphill’s second goal was one to saviour and worth a winner in any match when in the 60th minute James Felgate delivered a brilliant shot from 30 yards to make it 2-0.

Testing time for Knaphill to tighten their grip on the two goal lead, but it was cut down after 65 minutes when Feltham reduced the arrears as the Knaphill defence were prised open at the back to allow Javonne Moolley the space to slip the ball past keeper Nick McGregor. The 50th league goal Knaphill have conceded this season. The goal seemed to spur the home side on, but at the same time the visitors lost a bit of confidence in their play and had a couple of lucky escapes with Feltham missing two golden scoring chances in the space of a couple of minutes. They went close to snatching a draw in the 88th minute, but were denied by a fine save from McGregor, as Knaphill held on to gain maximum points. They now need to enhance on this win next weekend when they face Farleigh Rovers at Redding Way, seeking first back to back wins of the season. Team: McGregor, Green, McShane, Perks(Pilley 30mins), Doble, Roissetter, L.Taylor, Felgate, Coates(Brown 80mins), Ruggles(Postance 58mins), T.Taylor. Scorers: Ruggles(pen)25mins, Felgate 60mins. Booked: Ruggles Sub Not Used: Pym

GU21 News around the ground

Theknappers

This evening we welcome the players, officials and supporters from Mole Valley SCR plus the three match officials for this rearranged league game, originally scheduled to be played back in mid-December, but suffered one of several postponements due to the weather over the past couple of months. Knaphill have played only two matches here at Redding Way since the visit of Westfield on 8th December, and those were a reverse ‘home’ fixture for Eversley on 5th January as their pitch was out of action, and last Saturday’s home encounter against Sheerwater. Plus one away game against Feltham, resulting in just three games played in two months! After the Feltham game, we’ve had two blank Saturdays, one due to snow and the other the aftermath of the snow – waterlogged pitch! A brief reflection on the Feltham fixture which brought about our first league goals following a four match drought without scoring. After taking a 2-0 lead through goals from Phil Ruggles penalty, and a cracking 30 yard strike from James Felgate, Feltham reduced the arrears midway through the second half. But Knaphill held on to gain maximum points in a 2-1 win and a league double over their opponents. Could we go one better the following week at home to Farleigh Rovers with back to back wins? Unfortunately not – this time it was the weather that beat us - Snow taking the place of a waterlogged pitch. The second postponed game involved the scheduled visit to Westfield, which suffered the after effect of the previous week’s snow. But from one postponed local derby one week to another local encounter against Sheerwater last Saturday, a welcome game that did get played, ending with a valuable three points for Knaphill in a decisive and deserved 4-0 win. Phil Ruggles set the pace opening his account and Knaphill’s first goal after 22 minutes and he increased that lead in the 28thminute. Ruggles completed his hat trick in the 60thminute and the 3-0 lead put Knaphill in control, and the result was well and truly sealed three minutes into stoppage time when Ross Murray made it 4-0. The result gave Knaphill their first clean sheet of the season and their first back to back wins. Match report elsewhere in this programme. Of course it hasn’t been just the first team to suffer from the lack of football over the past couple of months. Our Reserves have only played one league game since their 3-1 win away to Sheerwater Reserves on Saturday 8th December. That came in the first week of January with a 7-1 defeat at Farnham. The Reserves are still waiting to play their Challenge Cup 2nd round tie away to Raynes Park Vale Reserves, which has been postponed three times!

Man of the Match v Sheerwater, Charlie Postance with Vice Chairman Mick Garbutt

But last Saturday Manager Dave Kelly and his team were without a league game, not for weather reasons, but because their opponents Frimley Green Reserves were involved in a Surrey Intermediate County Cup match. However, they arranged a friendly against Sandhurst Town Reserves on the 3G pitch at Winston Churchill Sports Centre which produced a glut of goals finishing with Knaphill winning 7-5. The Reserves, have their next league game scheduled for Saturday 16th February at home to Warlingham Reserves. Knaphill Youth have suffered even more, they’ve only played one League game since 14th November, which was the 6-1 win over Sandhurst Town U18s in their Southern Youth League fixture at Redding Way on 8thJanuary. The Youth team are due to play a Southern Youth League game at Redding Way on Tuesday 19th February when they entertain Cove, kick off 7.30pm.

Before that they travel to South Park U18’s in the Southern Youth League Cup on Thursday 14th February, kick off 7.45pm. Knaphill Ladies have also been out of action for a long spell, but finally got back into action on Sunday when they played Chelsea Ladies Reserves in County Cup game at Redding Way. Whilst Knaphill still await back to back wins on the pitch, our weekly Bonus Ball has produced back to back wins off the pitch for Knaphill’s President Dave Holloway. He gained a second successive win last Saturday. Have a go today and see if you could be a lucky winner on the Bonus Ball which is run every week throughout the season. The Knaphill Club Shop now features the Home and Away Kits, plus training and leisure clothing. Supplied by Joma via Kit Selection, it also features various items of clothing, from hoodies to winter jackets. See the website for more information. ………and finally, a look ahead to what’s coming up regarding first team fixtures. Next Saturday 9th February Knaphill are away to league leaders Frimley Green, which is followed by another away game on Saturday 16th February with a visit to Cobham. On Saturday 23rd February, Banstead Athletic are the visitors to Redding Way kick off 3pm. Enjoy this evening’s game……… Bryan

Chairman and Life President Alan Salmon founded SCR F.C in 1978, when the club began life as INRAD FC, based in Carshalton. The club entered a new era when Alan moved to Sutton and arranged sponsorship with his new neighbour, CENTRE 21 FC was born. This era saw the club running one Saturday side, three Sunday sides and three Youth sides. Centre 21's sponsorship continued until the club's youth players were no longer under 21 years old. The club again sought new a identity, SUTTON COMMON ROAD FC was formed and subsequently abbreviated to SCR FC. Since then the club has had five major sponsors whose names have been incorporated into the clubs affiliated name: SCR PLOUGH (twice), SCR GRAPES, next the club's longest sponsor SCR LITTEN TREE (7 years) & finally SCR Kingfisher, Ewell with whom we started our venture in Saturday football in 2004/05 until the then landlord Andy Coxs' departure. It was at this point that the club took the decision to revert back to using the SCR name alone, feeling that as they strove for continued promotion they needed to disassociate ourselves with the pub team image. That said the club did take sponsorship form the Fox & Hounds public house in Carshalton for the Sat first team in 2006/07, but the decision was made that the pub name would not be incorporated into the affiliated name, for the above reason. The club entered yet another new era for the season 07/08, with the introduction of a third Saturday side co run by Alex Avis & Tony Williams and the 1st team moved to the Middlesex County FL (and a name change SUTTON COMMON ROVERS) in the pursuit of combined Counties football, having made an unsuccessful application from the Surrey South Eastern Combination at the end of season 2006/07 having finished joint top (3rd on goal difference by 1 goal). Harry Barrett continued to run the 1st Surrey South Eastern Combination side until Feb 2008 when several personal factors meant unfortunately he had to step down. This paved the way for John Waddingham & Ben Jeffcoate to take the reigns as caretaker managers. During this shake up several additional changes took place in 2007/8 season, Alex moved in a new temporary role as 1st team assistant and within the team Sunday management the arrival of the youngest of the Salmons, Justin taking over jointly the 1st team with Dave Newbury. Stephen Snowdon & Alan Reed continued for the 4th season at the helm of the Sunday 2nd team. A third place finish in the Middlesex County League Premier division in 07/08 meant that the clubs promotion to the CCL was not assured but months of hard work & determination from the management team SCR eventually secured a place within the league constitution for the clubs 1st time in their 30 year history at the league AGM in June 2008.

The club also took the decision to take their reserve team into the CCL. Taking a place within the leagues Reserve Division under the joint guidance of Justin Salmon & Alex Avis, Alex has since elected to concentrate on playing and now been replaced by Simon Pike. Darren Salmon remains at the helm of the 1st with new additions Peter Hayne as assistant & Ken Bremner as club playing coach and the returning Gary Brigden as goalkeeping coach. 2008 also saw the latest name change of the club, this time with the inclusion of 'Mole Valley' to form the new name Mole Valley SCR F.C. reflecting the area in which they played. In 2009 the club was forced to yet another move from its shared ground in Mole Valley to its continuing tenancy at Cobham FC. The 2009/10 season saw the club win the Combined Counties League Division 1 and earn pro-motion to the Premier Division for the first time in the clubs history. The season also saw the side make its FA Vase debut, when winning 2-1 at Guildford City (although the side lost 1-0 at home to Beckenham Town the next round). The club also featured in its first ever county cup final, narrowly losing the Surrey Premier Cup Final to Sutton Utd Reserves 5-3 on penalties, after the match had finished 1-1 after extra time. 2010/11 again saw the club compete in the Combined Counties Premier Division, and make their debuts in both the FA Cup (a disappointing 5-0 loss to Chertsey Town) and in the Surrey Senior Cup (a 4-1 defeat against Egham Town) and another disappointing cup loss came in the FA Vase against Banstead Athletic (3-2). On the league front the season was a success with the side consolidating in an excellent 8th spot, in their first season in the Premier Division, and reaching the semi final of the EL Records Premier Challenge Cup - where they turned in one of their worst performance of the season en route to a 2-1 extra time defeat against Wembley. The reserves under James Cameron sealed a memorable season with a cup and league double. 2011/12, to date far and away the most disappointing season in our short Saturday Senior football history. The 1’s lost the sum total of 18 players and despite a frantic rebuilt, lost the first 14 competitive games of the season before a creditable run in the dying months was not sufficient to avoid the drop back to Division One and the reserves playing in the Suburban league finished below half way in the table but respectfully so given the step up in class under the joint guidance of Eric Howard and Luke Tuffs, both previously of Cove FC. Season 2012/13... Decent pre-season and yet another re-build of squad as well as restructure of the teams.. 17 colts sides, reserves in the Surrey Elite, Vets in Morden & District and 1st team CCL Division One... Another chapter in our short book to be written...

The last time we met... Saturday 25th August 2012 - Mole Valley SCR 1 Knaphill 0 Combined Counties League Division One

SUNK BY A SUB!

Knaphill suffered their third loss of the season on Saturday with Mole Valley inflicting a 1-0 defeat on a side that despite the creativity stemming from midfield, there was not the clinical finishing needed up front on the day. Having said that, for the workrate in certain areas, they deserved to come out of this Division One encounter with at least a point, and until the 85th minute it seemed as if it would turn out that way. But Mole Valley’s substitute Marvin Roberts struck a good shot from the edge of the 18 yard box, it went wide of the Knaphill keeper’s outstretched arm, hit the post, rebounded across the face of goal and into the net from the inside of the other post. The game started at quite a fast pace, the home side just sneaking the advantage of early attempts than their visitors in the first fifteen minutes. Knaphill’s contribution saw Craig Knowles effort turned for a corner by the keeper, whilst the hosts tested Matt Nash, and had an effort well over the bar. Knaphill, were dominating spells as the half progressed, and being marshalled well by skipper James Ward in defence. The visitors had a long range attempt from Dean Greenwood, and a snap shot from Luke Craig wide of the post, and just before the break, Knowles drove in a shot, but saved by the keeper. Both teams had chances in the second half, and with better accuracy, either side could have broken the deadlock. Still some driving force was shown from Knaphill’s midfield in build ups during the half, but it was becoming more evident that there was not sufficient sharpness in the last part of the pitch to find the net. As the game was heading towards looking to be a stalemate, Mole Valley had the chance to score after 84 minutes. Nash misjudged the bounce of the ball as two home defenders converged on him, one of which he fouled to give away a penalty. But the Knaphill keeper redeemed himself by saving well from the spot kick. Then in the 86th minute it was a Mole Valley sub that sank Knaphil, his shot striking both posts before entering the net. It gave the home side their third successive League win, probably the most fortuitous of those three games, whilst leaving Knaphill with just three points from four games and the need of a power surge of striking ability up front. Team: Nash, Redrup, Headland, Pearce, J.Ward, Greenwood, Knowles, P.Craig (Batica 81mins), Postance (Light 70mins), L.Craig, Dart (Coates 81mins).

Combined Counties League Division One, Saturday 5th February, Redding Way Kick Off 3.00pm

KNAPHILL 4 Ruggles 21, 28pen, 60, Murray 90+3 Sheerwater 0

This match might have lacked the usual local derby ingredients, but Knaphill’s performance produced a few ‘firsts’ of the season, a hat trick for striker Phil Ruggles, their best result and first clean sheet in twenty matches, and a second consecutive win that took them out of the bottom three in their comfortable 4-0 defeat of Sheerwater at Redding Way on Saturday.

Knaphill’s opponents went into this game having previously beaten high riding teams Eversley & California, and South Kilburn, with a narrow defeat against top three side Frimley Green. But Sheerwater were not able to show the same strengths as in those previous games. Knaphill were playing only their third game since early December, with both sides having suffered postponements over the past two months.

Nothing too much to stir excitement in the opening stages, until Knaphill’s threat of taking a much wanted lead, came to fruition after 21 minutes when Phil Ruggles seized a golden chance from eight yards, and with ease put Knaphill in front. That hasn’t happened many times this season, but there was an air of opportunity about the home side that they could enhance on the one goal lead. It came from a penalty in the 28th minute after Joe Green was fouled in the 18 yard box, and Ruggles duly despatched the spot kick to make it 2-0.

Sheerwater were not able to cause too much of a threat on the home goal, although Nick

McGregor did deny the visitors with a fine save after 32 minutes. Knaphill’s closest effort in the remainder of the first half when Ruggles strike brought out a fine save from Ricky Borratt shortly before halftime.

For much of the match, Knaphill gained a bigger percentage of possession and creativity than Sheerwater as the home side struck again in the 60th minute. Charlie Postance swung over a cross, intercepted by Luke Taylor, who played the ball to Ruggles, the striker producing a crisp finish inside the far post to put Knaphill well in control.

After 82 minutes, Postance glanced a header wide, then three minutes into stoppage time, substitute Ross Murray made it 4-0 on his first team debut, to give Knaphill a decisive and deserved victory. Knaphill now face Mole Valley SCR at Redding Way on Tuesday night, but a bigger test is ahead of them next Saturday when they visit new Division One leaders Frimley Green.

Goals: Ruggles (3), Murray.

Southern Youth League Western Division

Tuesday 8th January 2012

Knaphill U18’s 6 Sandhurst Town U18’s 1

Knaphill U18's showed their class last night with a convincing 6-1 victory over a battling Sandhurst Town side. The game started with a number of changes to the regular Knaphill line-up with a number of starting regulars unavailable including skipper Jonny Coats, top scorers Jamal Rodney & Mekhail McLaughlin and Turkay Suleyman. However the youngsters brought in by Manager Gary Taylor certainly proved their worth and justified their places in the starting line-up. Being watched by the Knaphill First Team Management team of Kevin Bailey and Phil Ruggles the game started with Knaphill on the ascendancy as runs down both flanks forced the sandhurst defence into desparate measures. The deadlock was broken after 18 minutes by Scott James and second and third added by Charlie Felicien in the 26th & 35 minutes and a superb chip by Scott James in the final minute of the 1st half. Goals in the second half from Ben Landi & substitiute Robert Litchfield ended the game as a contest despite a consolation goal in the 74th minute after the Knaphill defence failed to clear their lines. A fine result that confirms the Knappers third place in the table.

The youth team are back in action in the Southern Youth League cup at South Park U18’s on Thursday 14th February. They are back at Redding Way on Tuesday 19th February when we host Cove U18’s, kick off 7.30pm.

Cobham 0 Knaphill 2

Having not played for a month, Knaphill came back to fulfill 90 minutes of football and adapt themselves with a satisfying 2-0 win away to Cobham on Saturday. They certainly showed more endeavour and bite to their game than when these two teams met back in October which saw Cobham put six past Knaphill without reply. A number of changes were enforced as manager Phil Elery was without keeper Dan Pritchard, defenders Liam Parrington, George Pearce, Matt Ward and Matt Clarke. In came Jimmy Edwick, Sean Harvey and Shadrach Williams. Not only did Knaphill hold onto their two goal lead in this return game, but a clean sheet was also advantageous on an afternoon blighted by rain and wind, with a defence that dealt sufficiently with what Cobham had to offer up front, especially keeper Jimmy Edwick, who was to deny Cobham on several occasions with some timely saves, including a penalty. Both teams created chances in a first half that saw the visitors take the edge and initiative, which was to show as early as the 10th minute when a free kick from Gavin Brainch, playing his first game on his return to Knaphill, delivered the ball into the 18 yard box, which saw Craig Knowles having two headers targeted for goal, the first came back off the bar, the second chance neatly tucked away into the net. Earlier, Edwick deniedJake Baxter from creating an early opener for the home side. After 27 minutes, Knowles penetrated the Cobham defence, only to see his strike fly just past the far post, then 90 seconds later, Edwick stubbed out a goal scoring opportunity for the home side with a low diving save. Cobham went close on the half hour when Scott Day saw his long shot fly off the the bar. Knaphill closest effort in the latter stages was from a Steve Coultas shot into the side netting. Chances came for both sides in the second half, one for Knaphill’sMichael Pym, whose effort in the 54th minute, was hacked away to safety by a Cobham defender. But soon after, Knaphill were to strengthen their lead. Substitute Shadrach Williams, who had not been on the field long, became a provider towards Knaphill’s second goal when his neatly worked pass was met by Luke Craig who fired into the far corner of goal after 57 minutes to make it 2-0. Cobham’s substitute Lee Hall saw his shot turned over the bar by Edwick, then in the 66th minute, Cobham were awarded a dubious penalty. But it was Edwick who was to thwart Cobham again when he saved Baxter’s spot kick to keep Knaphill’s two goal lead intact. From then on, goal scoringopportunities became more limited, but Knaphill held their grip on the game to come away with three worthy points. Knaphill: Edwick, Harvey, Brainch, J.Ward, Macaskill, Wetherall, Jones, Coultas(Williams 56mins), Pym(Wilson 68mins), Craig(Collins 77mins), Knowles.
