Phil Ruggles, First Team Manager

tOUCHLINETALK Good afternoon and welcome to Redding Way. Today we face Warlingham FC. This will be our first game in three weeks as the weather has not been anyone's friend of late. Our last game saw on the wrong end of a 7-2 defeat away against AFC Croydon Athletic. We had a few missing from the previous week which left us a little short. Our goals came from both Ross Murray and Jermaile Johnson. The game itself could have been 4-4 at half time however, Croydon took there chances and we didn't. Overall Croydon deserved their victory and for us it was a game to forget and move on, it is just disappointing that we have had to wait so long to get things moving again.

Since our previous game a few changes have been made within the club however, one big one is that Kevin Bailey has become my assistant manager and in my view is still a huge part of the management set up. Kev has been a big influence since we came into the club and I for one wishes this to continue. With the end of season near approaching I would like to take this opportunity to inform everyone to get involved and buy your tickets for the End OF Season Awards Night. The event is to be held on the 25th May at West Byfleet golf club. I hope you enjoy the game Ruggs

Combined Counties League Division One, Saturday 2nd March, Redding Way Kick Off 3.00pm

Knaphill notched up their third consecutive win on Saturday which has now seen them pick up fifteen points in their last seven matches. The result put them one more step up the Division One ladder. It was, using an old football cliché, a game of two halves, from which despite tak-ing an early lead, their momentum in the first half was not strong enough to force a bigger lead. But they looked stronger in a much better performance in the second half, especially af-ter CB Hounslow had equalised, with Knaphill regaining their lead around the hour mark. Knaphill got off to a good start when after 11 minutes opened the scoring. Neil Roissetter’s shot was handled in the 18 yard box, up stepped Ross Murray who buried the spot kick to bring his tally to four goals from the last three games. The home side lost central defender Dante Alighieri with a hamstring injury after 21 minutes. Then despite Knaphill’s enterprising start, it was the visitors who were showing some determined play, with breaks from midfield looking dangerous, only to lack the finishing touch, including a couple of efforts going wide of the post. On the half hour Knaphill’s Luke Taylor had space and time for his opportunity on goal, but fired well off target. Six minutes into the second half, a question mark hung over Knaphill’s defending as CB Houn-slow struck their equaliser. But the goal made Knaphill step up a gear and start pushing to re-gain their lead. That came after 62 minutes with a first goal since a return to Knaphill for Paul Wetherall who seized his chance with a cracking delivery from 18 yards. After 68 minutes the resurgence in Knaphill was showing as new signing Jermaile Johnson, making his debut for the Club, hooked the ball home from close range. A comfortable lead, and although CB Hounslow tried to reduce the deficit, it was Knaphill looking to increase the lead further and in the 86th minute they wrapped up the game when Luke Taylor made it 4-1 and seal Knaphill’s third successive haul of maximum points. Knaphill: McGregor, Edwards, T.Taylor, Doble, Alighieri(Perks 21mins), Roissetter, L.Taylor, Wetherall, Postance(Dennison 57mins), Murray(Biggs 73mins), Johnson. Goals: Murray 11mins, Wetherall 62mins, Johnson 68mins, L.Taylor 86mins

GU21 News around the ground

Theknappers

Good afternoon everyone, and welcome to Warlingham players, officials and supporters, also to the three match officials for today’s Division One encounter. We hope that the League programme will be seeing Clubs back in action today after two successive weeks hit by the weather with waterlogged pitches, and even some snow last week. It was a complete washout with no matches played at all last Saturday. Winter still appears to have a sting in its tail. Our game today is the first one since our visit to AFC Croydon three weeks ago, and the first home game since the beginning of March. So April is going to be a busy month for many clubs with rearranged games, and spilling into early May. After Knaphill’s run of matches without interruption from the weather, that included three consecutive wins, the team then suffered two away defeats, at Westfield and AFC Croydon. The two recent postponed games have been rearranged. On Tuesday 9th April Knaphill play hosts to Spelthorne Sports kick off 7.30pm, and on Tuesday 30th April visit Worcester Park with an early evening kick off time of 6.30pm. The Reserves have also had games called off in the past two weeks, home to Farleigh Rovers and away to CB Hounslow. The Farleigh fixture has been rearranged for Saturday 6th April with the CB Hounslow fixture date to be advised. Looking back on our last home game on Saturday 2nd March, Knaphill’s 4-1 win over CB Hounslow United, notched up their third successive maximum points haul. Ross Murray put them in the lead from a penalty in the 11th minute, but soon after the visitors equalised. Knaphill were struggling a bit for the rest of the first half, but the second half saw them take control of the game. Paul Wetherall made it 2-1 with a cracking shot, and further goals from Jermaile Johnson and Luke Taylor wrapped up three worthy points and into 11thplace. The next game was just three days later in the local derby away to Westfield. The winning sequence was abruptly brought to a halt when Knaphill lost 2-0 with a goal in each half from the home side. But Knaphill put in a lot effort, especially in the second half, creating a vast number of chances but the finishing touch failed to bring any reward, although overall, they deserved to come out of the game with at least a point. In the same week Knaphill lost 7-2 away to AFC Croydon, a result we won’t dwell on with too many words! Match report for CB Hounslow game can be found elsewhere in this programme.

Our Youth U18s were in action against Fleet Spurs earlier this month with a 1-1 draw here at Redding Way, and the following week, were away to Molesey U18s in the Quarter-final of the Southern Youth League Cup, but faltered and lost 5-1. But then last week were hit again by the weather and postponed matches. Looking ahead to forthcoming first team fixtures, Knaphill are away to Farleigh Rovers next Saturday 6th April kick off 3pm, followed by the rearranged home fixture against Spelthorne Sports on Tuesday 9th April kick off 7.30pm. Then it’s a quick return game between Knaphill and Farleigh Rovers at Redding Way on Saturday 13th April. The following Saturday Knaphill are back on their travels in the visit to Epsom Athletic, a team currently in their first season of the Combined Counties League, and made their first visit to Redding Way earlier in the season, resulting in a 4-0 win. On the team management side, it’s been announced that Phil Ruggles will now be 1st team manager until the end of the season, with Kevin Bailey taking an Assistant Manager’s role. On joining the Club in the first half of the season, the two had taken on a dual role of first team management. In brief……Knaphill FC are looking to recruit a highly organised kit person to join their manage-ment set up. The successful candidate will assist team management and the rest of the coach-ing staff by organising all aspects of the Club’s kit requirements. The National Lottery Bonus Ball, number 19, was won last week by John Wood. The ‘Last Man Standing’ could see the current session finish this weekend with three participants vying for that Last Man spot, and possible three figure winnings. The Club’s Dinner and Awards Evening will be held on Saturday 25th May at West Byfleet Golf Club. This is a Ticket only event which must be purchased in advance, tickets are £40 and are available on matchdays from the Club through either David Freeman, Mick Garbutt, Nick Croshaw, Bryan Freeman. A £20 non-refundable deposit is required per person for bookings. We look forward to an entertaining 90 minutes this afternoon……….. Enjoy the game….

Introducing

Warlingham fc Warlingham F.C – A Brief History

Warlingham F.C was founded in 1896 and is affiliated to the Surrey F.A. The clubs base is at Church Lane, Warlingham where they moved in the early 1920’s. At this time they amalgamated with Warlingham Cricket Club to form Warlingham Sports Club. In the early years the team played at various local venues including Blanchman’s field (now a nature reserve), the School field just past the green, and what are now allotments off Hillbury Road. The current Church Lane site was left to the people of Warlingham for the pursuit of sport and is now used to support our 16 junior teams and our “A”, “B”, “C” and Veterans teams. During season 2011-2012 we entered into a ground sharing agreement with Ryman South team Whyteleafe having spent an enjoyable year there during the 2010-2011 season. This agreement allows us to retain our position in the Combined Counties league and pursue promotion to the CCL premier division. We continue to look for alternative local sites to build our own facility. Our reserve team play at Verdayne (Hamsey Green Playing Field), which was leased, from Tandridge District Council in March 2004 specifically to allow us to gain promotion to the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties league. In our long history we have gained virtually every honour available in Intermediate football and also achieved success at the next level having won the Combined Counties Div 1 title in season 05/06, the league cup during the season just past and the Reserve section in both 04/05 and 06/07. In season 2010-2011 we entered the FA Vase for the first time and embarked on another exciting chapter in our history, reaching the 2nd round proper and finally losing 1-0 to Reading Town F.C. Last season we made history again with our first entry into the FA Cup although we went down 1-0 to Tunbridge Wells in the preliminary round. In September 2008 we completed work on a new floodlit Astro training facility which has improved what we can offer our members in both our adult and colts sections. Season 10/11 was a disappointing year for our adult teams with them all closing the year in strong positions in their respective leagues and then falling away in the New Year. This past season was very different with all teams competing for honours right to the last with the 1st team winning the league cup and our “C” Team achieving the league and cup double. Our Colts section continues to go from strength to strength and we are beginning to see the very real benefit of players coming through into the senior teams. Last year we had our most successful season ever. Our Soccer School has also proved successful and has already created new teams in Mini Soccer for the Colts section. Warlingham F.C. is a “community” club providing football for local people from age 4 through to Veterans and look forward to the future with excitement and determination as we strive for further success across all our teams. This season we have been working hard to attain the FA’s Charter Standard accreditation. This was achieved in December 2011. A special thank you goes out to Vice Chairman, Paul Antino and the wider management team who worked so hard to achieve this.

Nick’s

notes Youth Secretary Nick Croshaw

With the lack of recent matches, I thought we would look at the title contenders for this seasons SYL West Division. As of 26th March the top four teams are Shalford, Godalming Town, Farnham Town & Knaphill. All four teams have played 14 games, except Farnham with 12, and this week they played each other – Godalming losing 0-2 at home against Shalford and the Knaphill v Farnham game finishing 2-2. These results have meant that Shalford have extended their lead at the top of the table and also put a dent into Farnham’s title challenge. Looking at each team in turn: Farnham had led the table from the first week and are the only undefeated team left in the league, they have also racked up a +30 goal difference, only Guildford City & Godalming Town have managed 0-0 draws at Farnham’s Memorial ground. Knaphill lost their 2nd game of the season 2-4 away and their most recent game finished 2-2 meaning that of the 10 goals Farn-ham have conceded, Knaphill have scored 4! Shalford are newcomers to the league, along with Knaphill, and have climbed to the top of the table with a run of 9 consecutive league wins which started with a close 3-2 win over Knaphill at Cove’s Squirrel Lane ground as they do not have lights at their home ground. They have lost twice, away at Farnham and at home to Godalming. Godalming Town’s first game of the season was at home to Knaphill and the result was a 2-1 win to the visitors which saw Knaphill sit at the top of the table for 24 hours. Godalming have also lost at home and drawn away to Farnham Town. Knaphill have played all but one of their away games (Ash United) and now have a run of that includes 6 homes games including against the top three. Even if Knaphill win all of their matches it will need Farnham to drop another 7 points, Shalford 7 points and Godalming 3 points for Knaphill to clinch the title. However with a 5 point lead over their next nearest challenger, Fleet Spurs, this should mean a top 4 finish for the Young Knappers which would be their best ever league performance.

Knaphill signed off their 2011/12 League programme with a 2-0 win against CB Hounslow at Redding Way on Saturday, although they certainly made hard work of it. But for some excellent saves, including a penalty, by keeper Dan Pritchard, then they could quite likely have suffered the reverse result. Making three enforced changes from the midweek game against Warlingham, Knaphill appeared lethargic in the opening twenty minutes, unsettled in defence and lacking a cutting edge up front, whereas the visitors were having a more positive approach, forcing four corners and creating more chances in their attempt to open the scoring, whilst Knaphill dur-ing that spell had a couple of efforts on the visitors goal. CB Hounslow almost made the breakthrough in the 35th minute but Dan Pritchard pulled off a great save to deny Aaron Jones shot from eight yards. At the other end, Michael Pym had a chance for Knaphill, but the effort was cleared to safety. Then Pritchard was in action again with a timely save from Harrison on the stroke of halftime. As the second half progressed, Knaphill were seeking to step up a gear to make more of an impact on the game. But it was CB Hounslow who were looking more likely to break the deadlock, and after 58 minutes, Pritchard denied them with a fine save from Harrison’s effort. The visitors had the opportunity to take the lead after 75 minutes when they were awarded a penalty, and again it was the Knaphill keeper who kept the scoreline level when he saved the resultant spot kick. It was the turning point of the game for Knaphill as they started putting more pressure on the visitors, and in the 78th minute had a penalty from which Craig Knowles slotted home with fine aplomb to make it 1-0. A boost to the home side, who then went on to increase their lead after 86 minutes when defender Gavin Brainch followed up his goal against Warlingham in midweek, with another one of his lethal left footed drives that zapped past the keeper and into the far corner, and a perfect way to round off the season with a win and maximum points.
