The Communicator Knights of Columbus
Immaculate Conception Council 11991, Goose Creek, SC
Volume 18, Issue 05 Editor: SK Steve Ekhaml, Recorder November, 2015
GK Steven P. Gearhart
Greetings Brother Knights,
What a great feeling in having completed the Columbus
HOPE Foundation Campaign for another year and what a
success it was. Our minimum goal this year to meet was
$11,150.00. Under the direction of the Deputy Grand
Knight, Lennie Tittle, we collected in excess of
$14,000.00 which is 26% above our goal. I want to
personally thank each and every member of this Council
including the wives, members of the YMP, and other
parishioners that volunteered this year to help us achieve
this enormous feat. Next year will even be greater. Many
thanks to Gene and Sofia Alaura for donating, preparing
and serving a delicious baked pasta dinner for the
Columbus HOPE Foundation Social. We served over 120
meals that evening and the auction was a tremendous
success.
The Council was privileged to have our State Deputy,
Frank Davis in attendance who awarded Council 11991
with the Star Council Award for the 2014-2015 Fraternal
Year. If you haven’t seen the plaque please look in the
display case as it is very impressive. Thank you for the
support and all of the hard work it takes in achieving this
prestigious award.
As you remember, this past month our State was
subjected to looding and many families were required to
evacuate their homes. I am reminded daily of the
continuous recovery efforts to return those families to
their homes. Our Council was challenged when a
parishioner developed a leak in her home due to a tree
limb resting on the roof. Thanks to Brothers Larry Latta,
Mike Cousino and Lennie Tittle who on Monday, October
5th, in the rain and a last minute request eliminated the
problem by removing the limb and temporarily fixed the
leaking roof. Another job well done by the Knight of
Columbus Council 11991. If there is any Knight in
distress from this catastrophe notify any member of this
Council so that we can find assistance for you.

upcoming events that require attention. By the time you
read this article we will have held our 2nd Degree on
October 29th and will have planned the 3rd Degree
Exemplification on November 7th in the Community

the 19th. I intend to participate in the Coats for Kids
Campaign and this year collect socks for soldiers. Sharon

offering her help in the development of the program.
HELP is needed. Notify the Community Director, Brother
William Davis to volunteer.
In closing, it was a very trying month to navigate
through but with perseverance and determination we
reached our goal and exceeded expectations with great
success. Thank you again for your support and remember
that the charitable work of a Knight is never over. There is
someone in need out there that will require our assistance.
Visitors to our Business Meetings are amazed at the
attendance and the ongoing projects we have and wishing
their Council was half as busy. We have a great group of
Knights in our Council and I am trying to personally
recognize you all

“A note from your Deputy Grand Knight”
My Brothers in Christ….Our efforts in Operation HOPE,
or more properly, Columbus HOPE Foundation Inc., are
over for the year. Halleluiah! Halleluiah! We are done.
But are we? Our fundraising efforts go on year round
because that is what we are about. We serve, and through
our efforts in time and treasure, we provide invaluable
assistance for those among us who are less fortunate than
ourselves. We have met our monetary goal this year and
then some. We will hear the numbers at the next Business
Meeting, but let me take a moment to again express my
heartfelt thanks to all of you who made it happen. You
know who you are and with me, express our personal
gratitude through the words of Christ in Mathew 6.
For those of you who participated by bidding in the
auction, I think we all can agree that folks took home great
values and again helped immensely in us reaching our
goals. Goals are important because they incite drive. Use
our successes to recruit good men for the Council
membership by keeping your Form 100 handy when you
relate the experiences you enjoyed being associated with
our Council and our escapades!
In looking towards next year, I would like to solicit your
help in finding two volunteers for a couple of important
tasks. I am looking for two individuals who would like to
step up and be leaders among our Council. No experience
is required and you only need to bring with you the desire
to succeed and to lead. Nothing happens in our Council
without leadership. Think about it. The projects we
participate in such as the Sunday Breakfast, Highway

Deputy Grand Knight: Jerry Caolie
I have been a Knight since October 1985. I
received my First Degree through Council 6726,
Hanahan-Goose Creek, Second and Third
Degrees at Council 7469, St. Joan of Arc in
Yorktown, Virginia. I was exemplified into the
Fourth Degree in February 2008 and an active
member with Msgr. Richard C. Madden
Assembly 1900, Summerville. I have previously
held positions as Inside Guard, Recorder and
Warden (interim), and the Purser with Assembly
1900, soon to be installed as Captain.
Lynn and I have been married for 35 years and
are parishioners at Immaculate Conception since
1981. We have three adult children; Patrick,
Sarah and Miriam and six grandchildren all
residing in the Goose Creek area. I have remained
actively involved in the parish as Eucharistic
Minister, and Minister of Hospitality, and I
anticipate great success for the Council this year
and I strongly encourage ALL of our Knights to
get involved! Many hands make for light work
and we have much work to accomplish this
fraternal year particularly by improving
membership, not necessarily by numbers but by
member dedication. I ask that all of us share our
time and talents to actively support the various
Council, parish and family activities. As the
motto of Grand Knight Russ Whited states, let's
all make Council 11991 a FULL HOUSE!
If you are a Knight, be a Knight!
Vivat Jesus

Tittle, continued from page 2……Cleanup, the Blood
Drive and others, happen because men step up to make it
so. To be honest with you, I would like two men new to
leadership roles outside the Officers and Directors who
want to gain some experience leading men. I will be with
you every step of the way to ensure your efforts are indeed
a success. First is the coordinator for our Tootsie Roll
Drives. I have already ordered the Tootsie Rolls for next
year and as promised, we will space these drives out over
the next calendar year. The second is a smaller task but
also important. I am looking for someone to coordinate the
Trash and Treasure Sale the first Saturday in October. You
will find coordination a challenge but not an impossible
task. Develop your leadership skills and come join the
leaders of our Council!
We still have some interesting items that were held back
because of time or late arrivals. We will be offering these
items through mini-auctions at the conclusion of Business
Meetings or Socials so let those be a further incentive to
attend! In closing, again my thanks and praise to all who
made this year an even greater success than previous
years. Keep a close eye on the calendar over the next few
months. As usual, we have had to juggle our Business
Meetings and Socials around the Holidays. Look to this
Communicator, the church bulletin and our
announcements at the Business Meetings to stay informed
about the happening of our Council. Peace through Christ.

District Deputy Report
First thing….I hope and pray that you and your families came
through our recent flooding safely. If you do need assistance call
me and I will point you in the right directions (and yes there are
many). My cell phone number is 843-830-5939.
This event brought up a serious point. We as Knights of Columbus
are not very well prepared for a disaster. How many of you are sure
that your council has all of your correct information so that they
can contact you? Believe it or not most of the councils I have talked
with don’t even have a good phone list.
So whose fault is this? Well let’s see, in 1989 Hurricane Hugo
devastated the Charleston area; this should have been a wakeup
call. Hurricane Floyd happened and everyone tried to escape a few
years later. When I was a Deputy Grand Knight (just a few years
ago) I attended a Grand Knights Workshop. One of the sessions
was about preparing for disasters. Again, we didn’t really take this
to heart and do anything with this.
I think we have had enough warnings.
We need to ensure that our council DOES have our contact info:
Name/Phone Number(s)/email/address/NOK (Next of Kin).
And I know that most of you will go, they already have that! But
are you 100% certain?
Personally from what I have learned working with 8 councils in
the last few weeks is that we (councils) do not have the data on our
members. For those that attend regular meetings this may be a true
statement, but for our brothers that we haven’t seen or heard from
in a while I think it would only benefit you and your family to take
the time and ensure the council does have a way to contact you.
After all, they only want to know if you are okay or you need help.
So help yourself.
Pat Davis, District Deputy #13

Knights in Action
Special Request
Our Chaplain, Fr Jason has requested our assistance in
creating a waterfall on the island between the Church and
the AMC. Long term plans are for a columbarium to be
constructed to hold cinerary urns. This waterfall is only
one part of creating an aesthetic area where persons can
retreat to meditate. Beginning Tuesday November 3rd,
Howard Jackson and Daryl Lareau will start the
construction by building a 5X8' walkway across the pond
so that access can be achieved for moving wheel barrows,
mowers, tillers and personnel during the construction.
On Saturday, November 7, 2015, construction will
continue at 8:00 am. If you have no plans on attending the
3rd Degree Exemplification then your presence is
requested at the pond behind the Church. Completion is
long term but the heavy lifting should be completed on
Saturday.
This is our 2015 Church project for the Knights of
Columbus and will reflect on UNITY, striving for Best
Council in South Carolina and Star Council 2015-2016.
This project is supported by the recycling of the
aluminum cans.
2nd Degree Exemplification,
October 9, 2015
Remember…….
Knights proud of their membership will wear
their name badges anytime they are at Church.
FRATERNAL AGENT
REPORT
Steve Kramp, FICF
Dear Brother Knights,
In the insurance industry, November is Long Term Care
Awareness Month. So what is long term care, and should you be
interested?
Long Term Care, LTC, is insurance that normally covers stay-at-
home or nursing home care needs. It covers virtually everything
from accidents to dementia/Alzheimer’s, or simply becoming frail
due to age and needing care. (There are specific eligibility
requirements that are contractually specified.) There is nothing else
that covers this need until you run out of money and go on
Medicaid, or are a qualified military veteran and space is available.
The average cost of a dual occupancy nursing home room in South
Carolina is over $70,000 per year! Most of us simply don’t have
hundreds of thousands of dollars saved up in case the need arises.
And even if we do, why not insure against it, just like we insure our
house or our car? There are two main purposes for purchasing LTC
insurance. The first one is asset protection. With the cost of care, it
doesn’t take long to go through a “pile of money.” The second
reason is freedom. If we need care and have insurance, we will do
and go where we decide and not have the state decide where to put
us.
Regarding when to buy LTC insurance, earlier is better. Just like
life insurance, the younger you are when you purchase LTC
insurance, the less it will cost you. The second reason to purchase it
sooner is due to health. Normally people don’t get healthier when
they get older and it is not easy to qualify for LTC insurance.

“Special Thanks from Your Grand Knight”
Allow me to be the first to congratulate Council 11991 for
their accomplishment of meeting and surpassing our 2015
goal for the Columbus Hope Foundation. Brother Knights
not only did we meet our goal of $11,150.00, we
surpassed that and collected in excess of $14,000.00
which is 126% above our goal. I want to thank each and
every one of you that volunteered your time this year. If it
wasn't for your support we would have struggled to meet
the minimum. Again I thank you for a job well done.

3,490 Babies saved as of October 23, 2015
Dear Friends of Life,
“Online for Life has made it a part of our mission to
educate our fellow citizens on some of the hot-topic issues
surrounding abortion. After amassing nearly five years of
research, podcasts, and videos, we’ve now compiled these
resources into an easy-to-access library. It’s called the
Online for Life Resource Center, and its use is FREE!
Perhaps you’ve encountered the argument about men and
abortion, and you found yourself tongue-tied in an effort
to refute it. Now, with the support of the OFL Resource
Center, you can arm yourself with the facts about the role
men play in both perpetrating and ending abortion. I
encourage you to visit the OFL Resource Center and
check out the more than 180 resources that are available to
you. And come back often, as we’re always updating the
Resource Center with more articles, videos, and podcasts.
FOURTH DEGREE 2015-2016
Brother Sir Knights,
First, I would like to thank the 22 Sir Knights and wives that came
to our Social event at Olive Garden last month. I have received
word that our Faithful Scribe is heading back for Antarctica for the
Southern Hemisphere Summer months and SK John Mallon has
volunteered to step-in in his absence. I also want to thank SK Dr.
Heinz Griebsch for the beautiful 4th degree pens he handcrafted.
Two of these pens were presented to SK Greg Seltzer and SK Mike
Cousino at the Olive Garden Social for their dedicated work with
the Assembly. I still have another that will be presented when the
opportunity arises.
At our last Business meeting it was voted on and approved that the
start time for our Assembly meetings will be at 7:30 for both O&D
and Business meetings (at least for the remainder of this fraternal
year). Our socials will normally start earlier. It was also voted on
and approved that we will waive dues for any members of the
Diaconate or those studying for the Diaconate. We also obligated
$500 to go to our Seminarian during the month of November.
Our next meeting will be our November Officer and Director
meeting at Immaculate Conception on Wednesday November 11th –
start time 7:30. During this meeting we will discuss the agenda
topics for the Business meeting in December and where and when
to hold the January Social meeting. If you have any agenda items
needing to be brought before the Assembly, bring them to the O&D
meeting. I also ask that you please let me know those items prior to
the meeting if possible. If you cannot attend let me know by phone
at (843-572-0943) or send me an email at
([email protected]) or the assembly email address
One of the topics already on the schedule is participation in the
“Coats for Kids” program. Last year we obligated $245 for this
program. Due to our scheduling we will not be able to truly vote on
this item again until the business meeting in December (unless we
have a quorum at the O&D meeting). Since December will be too
late to order and distribute the coats, we are requesting email or
phone responses “in favor” or “against” participation in this
program prior to the O&D meeting. Again, call or send your
responses to the phone or email addresses listed above. If we get a
majority of positive responses, we will write the check at the O&D
meeting and conduct the formal vote at the Business meeting in
December.
At 10am on the morning of November 11th we intend to participate
in the Veteran’s Day ceremony at the Dorchester County
Administration building (at the corner of Main Street and Highway
78) in Summerville. We will participate in both the presentation of
the flags and laying the wreath. We are looking for SK’s with
regalia to participate as Color and Honor Guards. If you can
participate with regalia, please inform me (again see above) or SK
Michael Cousino. Assemble with the Commander at 9:30. If you
do not have regalia, you are still invited to attend. Other than the

Do men really play a role in abortion?
Find out why men are not merely innocent bystanders
when it comes to abortion but they hold the power to
end it.
How can I defend the pro-life stance in the public
square?
Abortion is often portrayed as "complicated" and a
woman's right. Learn how to methodically and
winsomely defend the sacredness of Life.
How should the Church respond to abortion?
It is one thing to hold a belief but quite another to act
on its behalf. Learn how Christians can speak out on
the issue of life.
What does the Bible say about abortion?
Learn how to effectively use scripture to defend Life at
all stages.
What is the truth surrounding abortion?
The abortion debate is full of myths, half-truths and
political agendas. Learn the unequivocal facts and
decide the truth for yourself.
The finish line is in sight! November 1st is the final day
of the campaign--and the date of our victory rally!
Please join us at Donna Barber's home for a potluck
dinner where we will celebrate God's goodness and the joy
of life. We have to-date only one confirmed save--but
that does not mean that our prayers are not working great
things that cannot be seen! Let us pray hard this last
week, overcoming every obstacle: we are pressed, but not
crushed! Please bring some gastronomic delicacy to the
event--and let us know what you are bringing! The
sooner, the better: I love pasta salad, but we don't really
need 5 varieties...

help Council 704 with their preparations for the annual Turkey Trot
and Gobble Wobble in the days preceding Thanksgiving. If you
can donate some time it not only helps them, but it helps us with
our Operation H.O.P.E. fundraising. We will be asking for
volunteers at the November meeting.
I ask that all continue to bring toiletry articles and non-perishable
food items to any of our meetings and socials throughout the year.
These items will be collected and shared with the Walterboro
Veteran’s Victory Home, the VA Hospital and the Charleston Port
Seafarer Society, and the good Sisters in Kingstree.
Don’t forget to ask your fellow 3rd degree Knights to join the 4th
degree. Have them complete the “Form 4” and the “Appropriate
Dress for Candidates” form, have the Form 4 signed by the Council
Financial Secretary, and turn all into the Admissions Chairman –
Faithful Captain Stephen Gearhart. Let’s plan to have everyone
ready to go for the February 20th Exemplification.

GENERAL ELECTIONS DAY:
“All the opportunity for self-government through the rule of the
people depends upon one single factor. That is the ballot box…
The people of our country are sovereign. If they do not vote they
abdicate that sovereignty, and they may be entirely sure that if they
relinquish it other forces will seize it, and if they fail to govern
themselves some other power will rise up to govern them. Persons
who have the right to vote are trustees for the benefit of their
country and their countrymen. They have no right to say they do
not care. They must care!!”
- President Calvin Coolidge on November 3, 1924 reminding all
Americans of their solemn duty. PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS: Continue to keep our military
servicemen and women – those who are now where many of us
once were - in your thoughts and prayers, as well as those in public
safety.
“Protect them from the physical and moral dangers of military life.
Keep them close to You and help them live the Commandments.
Lord, Jesus, give them courage to serve their Country with honor
and dignity. Be with them when they are in danger strengthening
them when they face hardships. And Lord, grant that, when their
service is finished, they may return to us sound in mind, body and
soul. In particular we remember those who made the ultimate

discord, and confusion, from pride and arrogance, and
from every evil way. Defend our liberties and fashion into
one united people the multitude brought hither out of
many kindred’s and tongues. Endow with Thy spirit of
wisdom those to whom in Thy name we entrust the
authority of government, that there may be justice and
peace at home, and that, through obedience to Thy law,
we may show forth Thy praise among the nations of the
earth. In time of prosperity fill our hearts with
thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust
in Thee to fail.” - Unknown - A Traditional prayer at
Thanksgiving
PRAYER FOR OUR CITIZENS: Continue to pray for
our citizens, particularly those in South Carolina who have
been injured or displaced by the damage caused by the
recent flooding. Also, continue to pray for those who
have lost their lives or been injured by senseless violence
in our country.
