Hello Chapter “K” Krewe

September 5th Labor Day:

This day is a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength,

prosperity, and well-being of our country as per our history of the United States.

Other special days in September include: National Mud Pack Day, Johnny Appleseed Day, Wife

Appreciation Day, Positive Thinking Day and Make your Bed Day.

The last part of August 2016 will be remembered as the “Great Flood of 2016” with heavy rains and flooding in Baton Rouge, Lafayette and areas in between. We thank the chapter members that

donated items, money, and time to help those with flood damage.

Also this month Wing Ding 38 will be held in Billings, Mt. Several Chapter K members will be

traveling to and from Wing Ding. Just think about all the beautiful sights and wonders that the USA has to offer as they tour on Goldwing motorcycles

We have our annual fall ride September 15 – 18th in Arkansas. There are some nice roads that will keep your mind busy as you navigate those curves. AJ has sent out the list of hotels that we

will be staying in, so make your reservations, and plan on enjoying the ride.

September will keep us busy as we attend the New Orleans Bike week on September 23 – 25th at the Mahalia Jackson grounds - Armstrong Park and with lunch and dinner rides.

Let’s talk about lane position

The average lane on a road or highway is roughly 8 feet wide, while in comparison the average motorcycle is only 2 to 3 feet wide. This means that there is a lot of unused space around a motorcycle. While having space has its advantages there are also a few disadvantages as well. A lane can be divided in to 3 mini-lanes, left (A), middle (B) and right (C). Which part of the lane should a rider be in? Position (A) or the (blocking position) would be the best choice most of the time. I say most of the time because, sometimes the situation may call for a rider to choose another part of a lane (B) or (C) for short periods of time. It gives the best opportunity for a rider

to see as well as be seen by other vehicles. I do not recommend riding in the middle part of the lane because that is the area where a lot of debris tends to gather, also that is usually where you will find oil,

coolant and other slick fluids that are deposited from cars and trucks. As for position (C) the drawbacks are that the rider may not be visible to other drivers, as well as it might encourage other drivers to try and share your lane. A

car attempts to pass the rider in the same lane, which could force the rider off the road. And finally, when on a roadway or highway with 3 or more lanes, what lane

should you ride in? The best advice that I can give is to ride in the outside lanes, and try to stay away

from the middle lanes. These outside lanes are considered to be safer because the rider only has to

contend with possible hazards from one side. While the rider in the middle lane, is vulnerable from both sides. Now I am not telling you that you should never ride in the middle lanes because, that would be

unrealistic. I'm only saying that you should be aware of the dangers and try to limit the amount of time that you spend there.

Please ride safe and live long

Well the numbers in August surely lived up to the heat expectations. I don't know how much more we can take of this rain. It goes to show how much rain we can tolerate in a given

month. The rain we had in the middle of August was awful and many of our chapter friends lost homes, businesses, cars and bikes. It was terrible so let's keep them in our prayers

that they have a speedy recovery.

Many of our rides got cancelled because of rain. We never were able to get to Vines in Centerville. We cancelled that ride three times. Maybe we will be able to make that ride in

the fall since we haven't had that much of an opportunity to ride much in August. September is here and I can’t believe it has been a year since Wing Ding. It was so much fun and Chapter K sure did represent. By the time you receive our newsletter many of our

members will be there again. Have a safe journey.

We have a chapter road trip planned to Arkansas leaving on the 15th, which is a Thursday and returning on Sunday. Debbie and I are looking forward to this trip. We have never

ridden any of the roads in Arkansas before. At the end of September New Orleans is having their long awaited Bike Week starting on the

22nd and ending on the 25th.

There are a few things Chapter K will be doing in September so keep checking your email. I will follow-up with sending text messages to keep everyone up to date.

Becky and I are enjoying our trip to Montana via Colorado, Utah and a few other states! We’ve seen so many different motorcycles and more importantly differently dressed people on those motorcycles. I can say many of them are wearing more brightly colored gear. While having a conversation with a couple that were riding one of those adventure motorcycles I asked them why they wore the hi-vis green riding jackets. They said they thought they had a better chance of being seen. That being said as we rode in to Colorado Springs we saw several motorcycles in town for a ride supporting veterans. Most if not all we saw were in dressed in

their traditional black.

We all have an option to wear whatever riding gear we want. Just think about how many times you have heard the “I didn’t see them” statement after an accident. Maybe they would have been seen if they had on those “other” colors than black.

Hello Wingers

Well August was a terrible month for Chapters A and B. We had a total of 7 members get flooded, man floods twice in one year has been bad for a lot people in

Louisiana. If you wish to help those affected by the flood, please contact Jeff Freeman, Chapter A and Mike Judice Chapter B. I’m sure those affected still need

help in many ways. Back to normal things in the District, we have many Chapters putting on training and MAD Days. Chapter B, D, E, K and M have put on MAD Days. This is important for all of us, letting the public know that we need them to watch out for motorcycles.

This is also an opportunity to recruit new members. Congratulations to Jane and Larry Pfeifier from Chapter A for having their article on their trip to the Four Corners publishes in the Wing World magazine. This is a great honor and we need more members to send their articles in, you never know it

may make the magazine. We will leave for Wing Ding on August27th and will be gone for nine days. Man it

seems like we‘ve been on the road for a month. We will get home for about three weeks and head to the Oklahoma Rally. If you never been to this RALLY it’s a Good

one to attend, it is lots of fun. The Region Business Meeting will be held in November, if you have any topics that

you would like to have addressed, please send them to me. We all have question that need to be answered.

We hope those affected by the flood are able to repair their homes and go back to living a normal life style.

Until next time have fun, attend seminars and ride safe.

PRINTERS

This month I would like to talk about printers. There are some good ones and some bad ones out there but, I would like to give you some info on the home all-in-one printer.

With today’s prices for computer equipment going down, everyone should be able to have an all-in-one printer. So what is an all-in-one printer? Simply it is a printer, fax machine and a

scanner all-in-one. These days the printers even come with network cards for wired and wireless hook ups to you home network.

Once connected to your PC or your network, the supplied software (depending on brand) will let you print, fax and scan from any PC in your home. Like I said earlier, there are all kinds of

printers out there but I am going to give you some info on one brand, Hewlett-Packard (HP). I do not or have ever worked for HP but I like their printers. Yes they are a little pricier than the others but I have found them to be a better all around device. Here are a few reasons

why. HP printers seem to be a little more durable, they are user friendly to install and operate. Most of all, every time you buy a new ink cartridge, you get a new print head keeping your

prints, documents or pictures, looking like new. That is also why they are a little more than the other brands.

For those or you that say, “I will just go and have my cartridge refilled”. Well to do that, two things will happen. If by some chance you have to send the printer off for repair, a refilled cartridge will void your warranty. The other thing is the print head could start to smear your

print and now you just wasted your money for the refill. Another thing that may happen is that when you get the refilled cartridge back into your printer, sometimes the printer does not see

the cartridge as refilled, and will not print, wasted money again. The bottom line with any brand printer, always buy new parts and without abuse, your printer

will last a long time. We hope this has been helpful and as always, you can call or email us with any questions you

may have. We will do our best to answer them or find an answer for you.

Through your travels on these beautiful roads of ours, most of you have passed these places. It may be a landmark, intersection, interesting place or little known destination.

The first member to e-mail me at [email protected] with the correct location will receive 10-50/25/25 tickets at the next monthly gathering. Let’s see how many of you actually notice the things that

you pass up on your travels.
