Did you know?

TAC are aiming to reduce

the road toll to zero. You

can be part of the

solution.

As another Christmas period is upon us, we would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone associated with the L2P Driving Program a very Merry Christmas and to remain safe while driving over the holiday period.

The L2P Driving program is heavily reliant on support from both our sponsors and volunteer mentor drivers.

The program currently has 34 learner drivers registered in the program. And the financial support from the TAC, as well as local businesses and organisations, helps fund the costs associated with the higher intake of learner drivers to our program. So once again, thank you for your ongoing support.

Thank you also to our volunteer supervising drivers who commit their time and effort into tirelessly supporting our learner drivers to achieve the mandated 120 hours of supervised driving.

Your mentoring ability and words of wisdom are both valued and appreciated by all learner drivers associated with the program.

We also offer our best wishes and congratulations to the learner drivers who have successfully obtained their P’s during the year, a rewarding experience indeed!!

And finally, to all of our learner drivers, safe driving over the Christmas holiday season. We look forward to driving with you again in 2017.

Fundraising Activities for L2P

The L2P Driving Program is always looking for more mentors to be trained up and assist young people to gain their probationary licence.

The program supports young people who face major barriers to getting the 120 hours of driving practice required to get their probationary licence. The program helps people aged 16 to 21 to progress from a learners’ permit to a probationary licence.

Learner drivers are given lessons with qualified instructors and then are paired up with volunteer mentor drivers who use a car supplied by Swan Hill Automotive Group to get driving practice.

Mentor drivers receive comprehensive training from the Vicroads designed L2P mentor training program.

Find out more about the program at www.swanhill.vic.gov.au/community/community-programs. You can also contact Ross on 0427 182 241.

In the past two months the L2P program has been involved in two fundraising activities. In October, The L2P Driving program was one of many community groups that helped distribute fruit fly bait traps in Swan Hill. A big thank you to Dallas Williams, Jenny and Tony Waldron and Asghar Awazali for their efforts and time in assisting in the latest round of fruit fly bait trap distribution.

In November our annual community BBQ fundraiser was held at Bunning's. The day was very successful and the support provided by Bunning's was very much appreciated. Thank you to David, Dallas, Georgina, Michael, Deb, Jose and Nick for helping to cook , serve and make the day a success.

Funds raised in these activities help the L2P Driving Program cover some of the expenses incurred with professional driving lessons and vehicle running costs.

“Volunteering is

Pre-drive vehicle check

Don't ever

question the

value of

volunteers.

Noah's Ark was

built by

volunteers; the

Titanic was built

by professionals.

Before beginning a driving session, Learners and Mentor should

perform a pre-drive safety check of the vehicle.

On the day of their drive test your Learner is required to identify and operate the following vehicle controls:

• Turn indicators

• Brake lights

• Horn

• Headlights (high and low beam)

• Hazard lights

Windscreen washer and wipers

The Learner is required to identify, but not operate, the following

controls:

• Handbrake

Front and rear demister

When your Learner is putting on their L plates get them to look around the car for any damage and check the tyres. If the tyres feel or look low go to a service station and check the tyre pressure together.

Also show them under the bonnet and point out things like the oil dipstick, windscreen washer bottle, filler cap and battery.

Tip of the day

Which side is the petrol cap on?

Thanks to Liz Smith at Campaspe L2P on her tip of the day for Learner drivers:

“When filling the car especially in

an unfamiliar vehicle, take note

of the little arrow next to the

pump symbol on the dashboard.“

“This handy little arrow tells you

which side of the car the fuel cap

is on.”

This could be a great tip for our

experienced drivers too!
