—SUMMER AND OTHER TRANSITIONS—

As we move into our last month of summer I hope that

many of you have found time over the summer to relax,

rest and renew yourselves before we jump back into our

school year schedules! It is important to recharge be-

fore we transition to full steam ahead again!

I have enjoyed a few such opportunities at the begin-

ning of the summer: the end of May I enjoyed a contin-

uing education renewal at the preachers’ Homilectics

conference in Washington DC; followed by an end of

June trip where Rodney and I relaxed at our son Chris-

topher’s graduation followed by a little vacation tour in

Oregon. We then moved Christopher to his first full-

time job in San Jose, California. This last week of July, I

took a few days to lay my mother’s ashes to rest in her

church’s memorial garden in Tennessee.

Our lives are sometimes cyclical with beginnings and

endings that help us to grow in faith and grace as we

age. It was gratifying to see the growth in maturity of

our older son Christopher as he ended graduate school

and begins full-time work. As my sisters and I buried

my mother's ashes we marked the ending of that gen-

eration in our lives and the beginning of our generation

as the “elders” of our family. Letting go of our son and

my mother are both interesting processes with emo-

tional and intellectual components. As usual, intellectu-

ally accepting these transitions is easier than accepting

them emotionally.

Ecclesiastes writes rather prosaically that “for everything

there is a season, and a time for every matter under

heaven.” I am learning to approach transitions with

gratitude and curiosity, thankful for what was and

curious about what God will teach me next. I am

grateful for the time and learnings with my son and my

mother, and hope that I can pass on blessings received

from each of them to benefit still others. I will miss the

more active sharing with each but I know and trust that

the learning will continue with them in new ways moving

forward.

How about you? How have you been able to relax, rest

and renew over this summer transition? What other life

transitions have happened for you?

I have enjoyed one summer chat with church parents

and look forward to two more that in August. One of the

most important parts of faith and church is to be a sup-

port and encouragement during our life transitions. God

is with us through it all as we know from Jesus. But our

faith family makes God’s presence known in concrete

and valuable ways. I hope to learn more ways that our

church family can be helpful in your life transitions, in

these next summer chats!

As we look to transition into our fall schedule I want to

share one new transition we will experience at church.

TGIW—We are going to transition away from a worship

time after supper to some small group time. We will eat

supper a bit later, from 5:30-6:30pm We then will offer a

Kids Club time for play or homework. The small group

and Kids Club time will be from 6:30-7:15pm.

The adult small groups will offer such topics as a book

study, Bible study, or a photography, cooking, or sewing

class. These will start in October and run for 6 weeks. The

next six week session will be Jan–Feb; we will also have a

short small group time during the six weeks of Lent.

Would you like to lead a six-week small group? What

would you like to learn over six weeks?

Watch for more information about these new

opportunities in your September newsletter!

Happy to explore our faith and extend Christ’s reach with

you,

Pastor Lisa ☺

Dear Church Family,

Thank you so much for remembering Bob and me following my recent hip surgery. The cards, phone calls, visits &

prayer shawl certainly made me feel God's love. Progress is moving forward as expected which is also a blessing. I

truly appreciate all of your thoughtful gestures. Susan Caemmerer

To Our Church Family,

We're sorry we didn't have a chance to properly say goodbye. Once our house sold, the moving timetable rapidly

accelerated. We're slowly settling in as our bodies adjust to the higher altitude. Now we see Zach a couple times a

week, a nice change over once a year. We feel blessed to have been members and for our son to have grown up at

FUMC. Love and best wishes to all, Mike and Lucy Greer, Santa Fe, NM

WELCOME TO OUR NEW STAFF Joe Wilkinson, Administrative Assistant: We are happy to announce that we have hired Joe Wilkinson to be our

new Administrative Assistant who began July 17. He has spent the first few days training with Jan Bondiman. Joe

comes to us from prior work as an office administrator for schools and church-related organizations in the Kansas

City, Missouri area. He also holds a part-time job as Director of Music and Organist for United Church of Hyde Park

in Chicago.

Kevin Wong, Organist: Kevin has served various churches in the Chicago area. Kevin studied piano as a child with

Marilyn Andersen at Wheaton College’s Community School of the Arts, received his Bachelor in Music & German

from Elmhurst College and his Master’s in Piano Performance from Roosevelt University. Kevin teaches piano at

Quinlan and Fabish Music Company in Burr Ridge, accompanies the Village Voices in Downer's Grove, and serves as

Orchestral Pianist for the DuPage Symphony Orchestra. Kevin is a member and the former organist at Kingswood

United Methodist. Many thanks to Sue Johnston, our staff and Staff-Parish Committee for their dedication to lead-

ership during this interview process.

ALL TOGETHER UNDER THE SON WORSHIP

SUNDAY August 5, 10:30am at Gordon Park Come worship with your friends from other La Grange churches on Sunday, August 5, at

10:30am. You are welcome to sing with other choir members in a great combined choir! The rehearsal for the com-

bined choir piece is Thursday evening, Aug 2 at First Presbyterian Church. A few of our local clergy will share re-

flections, and we all will share in communion together. There is parking available accessed by S. Tilden (Hazel) Ave-

nue; golf carts are available to bring you to the stage area from the parking. There are sunny and shaded places to

sit and water available to drink. Don’t dress up, be comfortable! An ensemble from our own Salt Creek Chamber

Orchestra will play this year again during communion. Plan to stay after worship to have lunch with your friends

and neighbors at the local restaurant vendors on site! After lunch stay for old-fashioned family picnic games with

your neighbors! The games will be led by our La Grange Business Association Health & Wellness Team. We will all

enjoy our time Together Under the Son at Endless Summerfest on this Sunday!

CHURCH NEWS, CONTINUED

E-GIVING—NOT JUST FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR! If you are traveling this month, we encourage you to try out e-giving with the church to give electronically through

your bank or credit card on scheduled dates that work for you in amounts that you choose. Giving regularly this

way helps our church continue to meet our bills throughout the summer. You can find our e-giving icon on our

web page, www.fumclg.org, to try this way of giving over the summer. Many earn travel points and other bonuses

through using their credit card! You may contact our financial secretary, Sue Simek, with any questions you have

about this by calling our church office at 708.352.1250, ext 235.

SUMMER BEDS VOLUNTEERS It is that time again when BEDS is in great need of summer shelter volunteers. We began our Transitional Summer

Shelter on June 11th. The Summer Transitional program was instrumental in housing nine of our chronically

homeless individuals last summer. Without this program we often lose contact with our more vulnerable clients

which inhibits their ability to gain housing. This is also a great opportunity to include family members in providing

meals and shifts with their parents. College students are also encouraged to work shifts.

Our church is the host site the week of July 30-August 5. You may volunteer here at FUMCLG, or at other host sites

as well.

SAVE THE DATE: A special program on living with Alzheimer's Our Health and Wellness Team has scheduled a congregation “Lunch and Learn,” for Sunday, October 14 after

worship. We are bringing a speaker from the Alzheimer’s Association to help us learn “Effective Communication

Strategies” for family and friends with Alzheimer's. This program should help us learn new ways to connect and

communicate when words are lost. The program is free, but donations will be received toward the cost of the

lunch. Reservations will be made through the Alzheimer’s Association closer to the date. You are welcome to

invite other family, friends and neighbors!

COMING SOON: the 24th Annual Harvest PowWow at

Naper Settlement Joseph Standing Bear (our school year evening custodian) and Janet Sevilla,

heads of the Midwest SOARRING Foundation, are planning another wonderful

Pow Wow where all are welcome to learn more about Native American culture,

history, and environmental concerns. The Pow Wow is Saturday and Sunday,

September 22 & 23. If you would like to volunteer, Joseph says they do need some help with staffing the ticket

booth at the entrance. You may contact them or learn more by going to www.harvestpowwow.com, or email

them at [email protected]. Our church has contributed supporting funds for this event through our endowment

fund earnings for mission.
