Having melted many an Aussie face on the 2013 Soundwave tour and a couple of sideshows with Kyuss Lives and Orange Goblin, Portland, Oregon’s favourite hard-rockin’ metal sons, Red Fang, are heading back to our shores for another go round.

These guys capture the loud and fast, anything-goes spirit of classic rock with their heavy stoner-influenced jams. The quartet, consisting of Bryan Giles, Aaron Beam, David Sullivan, and John Sherman, makes guitars the focus of their gimmick-free brand of driving rock and roll, eschewing any prog leanings and putting the emphasis on the riffs. The sound is tied together by a sense of punk urgency which spurs the stoner jams into action and gets the songs moving at a raucous gallop.

With their third long player, Whales and Leeches hitting the Billboard 200 charts, now’s the time to see Red Fang at the top of their game.

Mountain Goats main man John Darnielle’s songwriting palate has always been vast to say the least. Themes of anger, rejection, fear, redemption and joy wrapped up in highly literate obser-vational narratives that have had rock critics stammering for superlatives since the unassuming three piece hit the indie zeitgeist proper with their acclaimed eleventh album All Hail West Texas in 2002. For the Goats’ 15th effort, Darnielle has turned his lyrical attentions to the world of professional wrestling and while it may seem a strange combo, the results are astounding. As testament to Darn-ielle’s gravitas as a social observer, these songs delve much deeper than tales of the turnbuckle.

A clear standout here is the tragic bal-ladry of Stabbed to Death Outside San Juan.

While this was nominated for a best for-eign language film Oscar, why star Bruno Gantz wasn’t nominated for best actor for his portrayal of Adolf Hitler is a mystery. Downfall tells the story of Hitler’s last days in Berlin from the perspective of his personal secretary Traudl Junge, reveal-ing the claustrophobic atmosphere in the bunker as well as the chaos on the streets.

While losing its way a tad halfway through, this understated thriller is still highly watchable, thanks to a subtle yet unsettling turn from Jake Gyllenhaal.

Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom who falls into the world of crime journalism and becomes a “nightcrawler” - a freelance cameraman filming fires and murders and, desperate for a ‘scoop’, blurs the line between observer and participant.

Darren Williams’ first stage appearances were at the tender age of seven, winning several medals for sing-ing at the Sydney Opera House. To date, his many accolades include Australian Variety Entertainer of the Year and best male vocal performer at the MO Awards as well as best male vocalist from the ACE Awards.

Although raised on rock and roll, the son of Australian Bandstand’s Warren Williams is equally at home singing

the classics. Darren has also appeared in Gordon Frost’s production of South Pacific and was the leading man in Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s musical A Grand Night For Singing in Sydney. Having studied with various teachers in Sydney and New York City he has developed an extraordinary five-octave vocal range, allowing him to master just about every style from pop to opera.

The band had been plugging away for a considerable amount of time before hitting the stratosphere

When it comes to writing blistering, yet hookier-than-a-fisherman’s tacklebox power pop, there are few bands

that do it as well as Everclear.The band, who cut a swathe through the

grunge-soaked musical landscape of the 1990s with such tracks as Santa Monica, Heroin Girl, Heartspark Dollarsign and Everything to Everyone will be heading our way next month to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their game-changing sophomore album Sparkle and Fade.

So does it feel like 20 years for frontman Art Alexakis?

“Well, it does and it doesn’t,” he told TE.“I mean it does because I’ve lived a

hell of a lot of life since that album came out and Everclear have released seven albums since then but, on the flipside it doesn’t because those songs still feel really fresh to me all these years later, we play those songs live and people still seem to relate to them really well.”

After piquing some interest with their debut record World of Noise - interest that resulted in a label bidding war that was

won by Capitol Records, the resulting Sparkle and Fade and in particular its second single Santa Monica, catapulted them from the indie milieu and well and truly into the mainstream.

“The moment I realised that Everclear was really starting to click was when Santa Monica came out over the Christ-mas of 95/96,” Alexakis explained.

“Over that holiday period, there’s a complete blackout on things like sales and airplay figures, but after that two weeks were over, the song went from selling, like 9000 copies a week to 40,000 a week which was just amazing. Also, we found that we were starting to sell out shows the day they went on sale. It was around that time we thought ‘hey we might just have something here”.

Everclear followed Sparkle and Fade with their best-selling album to date, So Much for the Afterglow and Alexakis said there was a certain amount of pressure surrounding the Afterglow sessions to replicate that earlier success.

“There totally was pressure and that’s kinda why I wrote the song on So Much for the Afterglow called One Hit Wonder because there was a perception that we were exactly that,” he said.

“It’s funny because we’d made that record [Afterglow] and it was a good

stratosphere definitely helped keep them grounded in that heady period.

“Look at it this way, by the time Ever-clear took off I was, like 33 or 34 and had been playing in bands since I was 16,” he said.

“There was that perception that we were overnight sensations but we really did work our arses off.”

Not content to exist in pure revisionist territory, in 2014, the band inked a deal with Brooklyn-based indie label The End Records/ADA and are on the cusp of releasing their ninth studio album Black Is The New Black - a set that Alexakis said was a harkening back to the classic Everclear sound of the first three records, coupled with many modern flourishes. If you’ve heard the lead single, The Man Who Broke His Own Heart, then you’d know to expect a mammoth wall of sound.

“There is such a buzz of enthusiasm there for Black Is The New Black,” Alexa-kis said.

“It’s an unapologetic rocker through and through that I feel combines the best of classic Everclear with contemporary production and what I feel is some of my best songwriting in years.”

We were recording in New York and I ended up spending a bit of time walking around the city and I came up with a bunch of new songs so we went back in, cut some tracks out of the list and spent about two months working on the new stuff and it ended up being our most success-ful album yet. So I guess, in a way the pressure was placed on us ourselves to raise the creative bar because you can’t spend your life listening to people who only kiss your arse or people who hate everything you do - you really have to listen to yourself.”

While he is perhaps best known for his work with seminal 80s rockers Men at Work, there’s no denying

that Colin Hay has since eclipsed that outfit with a formidable twelve-album solo cata-logue - the latest of which, Next Year People, being hailed as a career best.

Hay, who now resides in Los Angeles, will be heading back of this part of the world next month and he said the prospect of some Aussie road time is a lot more attrac-tive now than it was in those early post-Men At Work solo days.

“I love playing down there because there always seems to be a lot of love in the room,” Hay told TE.

“It’s also great to see because there was a time, after the old band broke up, when I’d go out on tour on my own and no-one really seemed bothered with it and I think it was because the band had such success there was a kind of backlash and it was a bit of a case of ‘enough already’ - but that seems to be over with now.”

Hay said that Next Year People - an eclec-tic, honest and heartfelt record, imbued with a deft lyricism - was one of the easiest projects he had worked on.

“A good friend of mine, Michael Geor-giades, worked with me a lot on this record - he’d come up with an idea and we’d sit there and I’d work out the lyrics and some-times we’d bash out a song in around an hour,” he said.

Hay added that the title track - a heartfelt story of Depression-era Dustbowl farmers - was inspired by a documentary he saw while on the road few years prior.

“I was on the road and I saw this Ken Burns documentary on the depression in America and the troubles the farmers in the Dustbowl - around Northern Texas and Kansas - were facing and it really stuck with me,” he said.

“I found it was a great example of the human condition of doing the same thing year after year and expecting the same result and while my story doesn’t compare to those hardships, I did find a small paral-lel with what I’ve been doing with my solo career for the past 20 years - building things from the ground up and fully committing to a life on the road and just hoping that you

are facing in the right direction, but never really being sure.”

While Hay is never one to wallow too much in past glories, he said that some Men at Work classics still find there way into his set from time to time.

“They do get requested a lot less, these days as people become more familiar with

my solo work, but there are some of those songs that I’ve never really stopped playing - songs like Down Under and Who Can It Be Now because I think they’ve held up pretty well and they lend themselves quite well to what I’m doing now.”

Well respected by fans and the industry alike, the Dirty Deeds AC/DC tribute pride themselves on their ability to recreate the classic moments from AC/DC’s musical legacy. That may be why they were selected by AC/DC’s own record label to perform and represent the band at the official AC/DC Black Ice worldwide album launch party in October 2008 in Sydney.

With ‘Bon Scott’ re-incarnate Chad strut-ting his stuff out front you will believe you are witnessing AC/DC in the 1970’s and with many Brian Johnson-rea hits performed in the Bon Scott style, audiences are astounded to hear how classics such as Back In Black, Shoot To Thrill and Thunder-struck would have sounded if Bon Scott had lived long enough to record them.

It’s been almost 30 years since 80s pop-rock outfit 1927 released their multi-platinum selling debut record, …Ish but the band is still going strong as punters will discover when the

band heads to Caves Beach next month.The band responsible for such quintessen-

tial soft-rock classics as Compulsory Hero, You’ll Never Know, If I Could and That’s When I Think Of You may’ve been a tad quiet since the release of their 1992 self-titled effort, but their well and truly redressing that balance with their 2013 return to form Generation I.

“That core value of really well crafted and thoughtful songs that are still relevant that has typified 1927 since the first album is still there, but it’s also a very modern record in that we really embraced new technologies with this one - it’s a great album and we’re all really proud of it,” bass player Simon Shapiro, who joined the 1927 fold in 1993 told TE.

When it comes to band origin stories, 1927’s is unique to say the least. Original guitarist and keyboardist Garry Frost

(ex-Moving Pictures) was writing tracks for an unnamed project when he spotted eventual frontman (and only remaining original member Eric Weideman perform-ing a cover of the Police’s Roxanne on Hey Hey It’s Saturday. Suitably impressed, Frost got in the car and drove from Sydney to Melbourne to recruit Weiderman on the strength of that performance and the rest, as they say, is history.

Shapiro said he felt that it was the strength of the songs that has seen the band endure.

“It’s definitely the songwriting - every song has a purpose,” he said.

“It’s interesting because when we were writing Generation I, Eric said that he wasn’t interested in being a prolific songwriter, but rather a songwriter that has something to say. It’s about quality over quantity.”

When it comes to purveyors of fine fish and chips in our corner of the world, you’d have to travel

pretty far and wide to find any as good as the fare served up at Jeremiah Jones

With all seafood sourced locally, and every thing, and I mean everything, prepared fresh daily, Jeremiah Jones goes far beyond your stock-standard takeaway shop fish and chips.

This being TE’s third visit, the thing that struck this reviewer was consist-

ency - consistently well cooked, consist-ently well flavoured and consistently delicious.

Upon arrival, my dining partner and I were greeted with a veritable cornucopia of delights from Davey Jones’ locker - healthy portions of lightly crumbed calamari, prawns, whiting and gemfish, perched atop an even bigger portion of perfectly-cooked golden brown chips. Add to that a fresh and zesty salad with a light balsamic dressing that brought yet another level of freshness to proceed-ings and some house-made tartare sauce and aoli, and you have a dish that makes epithets like mouth-watering seem grossly understated.

All of the fish on the plate were cooked

to absolute perfection and the subtly flavoured crispy batter left no trace of oil on the back palate - a pleasing effect of changing oil daily.

The lightly crumbed calamari and lightly battered prawns were both sweet and succulent and the addition of the home-made tartare sauce and aoli took them both to the next level. These tasty morsel were so fresh that they could’ve jumped straight out of the ocean and onto the plate.

If you are looking for a great example of the quintessential classic, maybe give the local greasy spoon a miss in favour of some super fresh and consistently cooked seafood from Jeremiah Jones. You definitely won’t regret it.

Having only been together since 2013, Blue Mountains rootsy indie-rockers Eddie Boyd and the Phatapillars have

certainly packed a lot in. From winning the Byron Bay Bluesfest busking compe-tition in 2014, to playing more than 100 gigs in 12 months and a triumphant return to Bluesfest this year to launch their long-awaited debut EP, A Lover and a Fool.

“It was great to be back at Bluesfest to launch the EP - we played two shows there and the crowds seemed really receptive which it great. I’d play there every day if I could.”

Boyd added that there was a palpable sense of relief to see the EP in the hands

of punters as it had been in the pipeline for some time.

“We started recording the thing in July last year, but we also played 106 gigs last year so it was a pretty chaotic schedule to try and for it all in,” he said.

Boyd said the main focus of the EP was to make it sound as live as possible.

“We really did want to capture that energy and live, raw vibe and I think we did an okay job - all of the skeleton tracks were recorded totally live and then it was just a matter of doing the vocals and a few little overdubs here and there,” he said.

Having gone full tilt on the road for the past 12 months, Boyd said, after this run, the plan was to pull back a tad and reflect on how far they had come.

the decision in late 2014 by the Stiffys to evolve into a more serious art rock band saw the unveiling of some bold new outfits and the release of the first single (Kick Another Flip) from the bands’ forthcoming Art Rock record due for release in late 2015. Having devoted the last few months to writing, recording and talking to ladies on social media, the boys are back with another cracking new song.

“Kissy Kissy is a song about kissing girls and how we’re really great at it,” bassist Jason Leigh said.

“Both of us have heaps of experience kissing girls because we’re in a rock and roll band, we’re basically pros in that regard. This song is probably the most art thing we’ve ever done.”

The last time Bam Margera, brought his proto-punk outfit F**kface Unstoppable (FFU) to Australia, things got a little out of hand - as you

might expect if you know anything about Margera. So much so, that the rambunc-tious pro skater and star of such fare as Jackass and Viva La Bam told TE things would be toned down a tad on his return visit to our shores next month.

“Yeah, man I think things will have to be a little more chill this time because, you see I’m really into paint, and last time I ran up a bill of, like $40,000 in oil paint damage to hotel rooms and clubs - pretty much everywhere I went,” he laughed.

“Anyway, I got home and my dad was going over the bill for the tour and he was like ‘Bam, you’re supposed to be making money on tour, not wasting it painting hotel rooms or hiring private helicopters’, so maybe this time I’ll just stick to water-colours. There’s probably some of the damage still there so maybe I’ll be able to retrace my steps.”

Aside from Margera on vocals, the Oz tour iteration of FFU will also feature Margera’s brother Jess (CKY) on drums and in somewhat of a coup, Andy McCoy- the guitarist for Finnish hard rock icons Hanoi Rocks.

“I’m so stoked to have Andy coming down to Australia with us because he is just such a f***ing legend, man,” he said.

“We recorded an album a while back and now we’re planning on re-recording all of the songs with Andy because he’s just so f***ing good.”

The album in question is an absolute barn burner of blistering punk rock and brooding metal that features a swag of FFU originals (including the almost inexplicably hilarious dubstep track Bend My D**k) and great covers of Big News 1 & 2 by US rockers Clutch and Get it On by Swedish punk n rollers Turbonegro.

“The album came together really quickly, actually,” Margera said.

“We recorded it in Reykjavik, Iceland at the studio where Bjork does all her recording, so I think they might have been a little overwhelmed when we were in there with people like Dani Filth from Cradle of Filth who sang on Sleepless,

because they were used to recording things like Bjork and Sigur Rós but it all worked out really well and I’ really proud of the record.”

Margera first started making a name for himself outside the world of pro skating with the CKY video series that eventu-ally morphed into the global prankster phenomenon of Jackass although, he said he had no idea the concept would blow up like it eventually did.

“I certainly always hoped it would take off, but to be honest no one had any idea,” he said.

“It was pretty f**king weird, man because I was a total nobody in high school and then Jackass blew up and all of a sudden I was getting invited to parties by douchebag frat boys, so I pretty much quit.”

Fast & Furious 7 is big, bold, brash and it’s got more explo-sions that you can poke a stick at but what else would you expect from a franchise that has been getting steadily more outrageous with every instalment.

After throwing malignant mer-cenary Owen Shaw out of a plane in the previous instalment, the Fast & Furious gang, pardoned for their previous crimes, head back to LA for a life of normalcy. However, Shaw’s brother Deck-ard (Jason Statham), has other ideas and sets about picking the gang off one by one. If that

wasn’t enough, a shady government organisation, headed up by the mysterious Mr Nobody (Kurt Russell) task the gang with re-trieving a high-tech surveillance program, God’s Eye, that has been stolen by terrorists.

While it’s pretty stock-standard fare, plot-wise, a taut script, some truly audacious set pieces, and great onscreen chemistry between all of the ensemble cast drags Fast & Furious 7 out of the glut of hackneyed action flicks and up there among the more memorable of the genre.

A fitting swansong for the late Paul Walker and possibly the best in the franchise.

In this trashy romance flick, Scott Eastwood, son of screen legend Clint Eastwood, stars as Luke, a professional bull rider who falls in love with an ambitious art student named Sophia, played by Britt Robertson.

The pair’s unlikely love story unfolds in parallel with the re-flections of aging widower Ira Levinson (Alan Alda), whom Sophia befriends after she and her bucking beau save the old man from a burning car wreck. Yep, not only is he a hunk, but a hero as well.

For me, someone who is not normally a fan of chick flicks, this was sickly to the point of

being comical. The dialogue is straight out of Mills and Boon, the plot farfetched, and the performances of the two young stars are stale at best.

Frankly, the sub-plot involving Ira and his late wife was the only redeeming quality of this film for me.

But if you’re looking for a girly movie to shed a few tears and have a perve to, the Longest Ride and Scott Eastwood’s abs should suffice.

It may have been a little while between drinks for Newcastle-bred country chanteuse Catherine Britt, with her last studio album Always Never Enough dropping in 2010, but

she is certainly redressing that balance with her soon-to-be-released sixth record Boneshaker.

“It has been a little while but I have been in the industry for quite a while now and I’ve never really had the chance to take some time off and kind of reflect on everything, so the last little while has been about that,” Britt told TE.

“It has been nice to have that little break, but the feet are definitely itchy and I just can’t wait to get the album out there - not too long now.”

If the debut single, Good To Bad (originally intended for her side project with Tim Rogers and Bill Chambers The Hillbilly Killers) is anything to go by, Bone-shaker promises to be a lushly produced set (courtesy of producer Ryan Hadlock - Foo Fighters, Lumineers) that delves into some darker and grittier territory, yet still

replete with the same down-to-earth lyri-cism that typified her previous releases.

Britt said the writing and recording processes were markedly different for Boneshaker - a conscious decision lest she paint herself into an artistic corner.

“Half of the album I wrote here in Newcastle and the other half was written while I spent two weeks living in a yhurt near Woodstock like a bit of a hippie,” she laughed.

“Also, I have worked with Bill [Chambers, who has produced four of her albums] for most of my career and he suggested that I try something different so I decided on Ryan Hadlock because I love the work he did with the Lumineers and Vance Joy so I was over the moon when I found out her wanted to be involved as well.”

Aside from enlisting the services of Hadlock, Britt also managed to snag the formidable talents of Steve Earle who duets with Britt on the track You and Me Against The World - a collaboration that gave Britt a sense of things coming full circle given that it was an Earle album that provided the main inspiration for Boneshaker.

rational, exciting and joyful experience,” she said. “He released an album called Washington Street Serenade which was just him, an acoustic guitar and a DJ and that album had a profound effect on me when writing Boneshaker to have him actually sing on it is just fabulous.

“Also, the song was actually written for my fiancée so he thinks it’s the coolest thing in the world.”
