Other services and options

A computer classroom without computers?MasterLab21 is not a regular computer classroom. It is a language laboratory. As such, the computer equipment that it includes is specially designed for this purpose and is not formed by conventional PCs.

The Students’ Integrated Interfaces are neither thin clients nor terminals, since a central server for remote applications is not needed in the classroom. They do not have a hard disk and they cannot be manually configured. This means they are highly efficient in terms of security and, moreover, they require minimal maintenance.

Protection and integrationMasterLab21 is perfectly integrated into specially designed furniture for classrooms, which protects and covers most of the equipment that forms part of the installation.

It includes both a spacious center console for the teacher, as are desks and chairs for the students.

All the wiring and devices in the classroom are protected and safe. Therefore, the risk of failures and breakdowns is immediately minimized.

Cost effective from day oneMasterLab21 includes installation and set up, as well as thorough training programmes for the teaching staff. In addition, it allows modules and optional equipment to be added so that the centre can adapt the installation to its own requirements.

MasterLab21 includes all the furniture for the classroom, both in the position of the students and the teacher.

It is specially designed to accommodate the devices and equipment of the laboratory, protecting and hiding most of the wiring, making them inaccessible to students, increasing the level of safety and reducing risk for damage.

At the same time it is aesthetic, practical and ergonomic; the classroom furniture also includes student and teacher’s chairs.

EquipmentInformation Technology without computers

The Teacher’s ComputerThe teacher has a full Windows PC to allow the incorporation of all types of educational applications and multimedia peripherals, such as, an interactive whiteboard or other devices for example.

Global MasterA specific control unit at the heart of the communication network in the classroom. This unit is not a server as the programmes are executed directly at the Student’s Integrated Interface, thus avoiding ̈bottle necks¨ in the main unit. An optional touch screen can be added to easily allow the use of Optimas’ simple interface.

It covers the main control and management functions in a classroom, allowing the teacher’s computer to be able to do other tasks, and also provides an extra multimedia storage space. It includes surround sound and other audio features that turn MasterLab21 into an advanced digital language laboratory.

Despite not having computers in the strict sense of the word, the Student Integrated Interface of MasterLab21 provides all the necessary tools for the independent work of the students in the classroom.

This system is revolutionary because it provides a useful and profitable tool for centers and it is extremely easy to use for students.

The center should not invest more money in the classroom setup since the MasterLab21 utilities are completely configured and ready to use.

MasterLab21 is a classroom without PCs but with...

n The Internet. Web browser with Flash, Java and VLC.

n LibreOffice suite.

n Audio recorder to record voice in language activities.

n Personal folders for students to keep their works.

n Shortcuts to the common folders of the classroom shared by the teacher.

n Image Editor.

n PDF reader.

n Virtual CD to run applications with ISO images.

n Windows Emulator for simple applications.

Headsets with a built–in microphone

Specially designed for language learning, they include a unidirectional microphone with noise reduction and isolating ear pads for an ideal listening experience.

Communication equipment

This is an interconnection module which is attached to the table, allowing the headset to be plugged into it. This device is essential if you want to use Optimas in the classroom. It has a built-in amplifier and replaces the computer’s sound card, providing high quality audio. Included are buttons to independently control volume levels as well as a port to allow the connection of external USB devices.

Student’s Integrated Interface

This is an electronic multimedia device which the students use to carry out classroom activities. It is built into, and protected by, the classroom furniture. It includes a monitor, mouse and keyboard, but what sets it apart from conventional PCs is that the students cannot tamper with it, nor can they alter the configuration. This device provides all the tools needed in a language laboratory, as well as the multimedia and Internet applications. It does not allow new applications to be added, therefore there is no need to acquire software licenses. Moreover, very little maintenance is required.

Optimas School broadcasts extremely high quality audio and video to the students’ workstations with no delays or interference.

Broadcasting Channels. The 10 channels available allow the teacher to send audio and video from different sources from his/ her workstation. The audio and video is received by the students on their monitors and via their headsets. Different channels can be simultaneously sent to different groups of students.

Diversity of resources. The material used in the classroom can come from a wide variety of sources, both analogue and digital, such as: DVD, CD-ROM, digitalized video, computer programs, the Internet, as well as analogue sources such as VHS videos or cassettes, etc.

Demonstration. At all times, the teacher controls the transmission of these resources so that the students can receive them individually at their workstations. There are many ways that the teacher can carry out this task. He/ she can show his / her screen to the students, or show one of the student’s screens to the rest of the class, while at the same time providing spoken explanations.

Oral communication is fundamental in Optimas School; it allows the students to communicate amongst themselves, as well as with the teacher at all times.

Work groups. Optimas School allows you to configure 8 groups simultaneously within a class. Within these groups, it is the teacher who controls the students’ microphones allowing them to speak with each other, or to the rest of the class.

Pair conversation. Pair conversation encourages interaction and collaborative work between two students. The teacher can create different types of pair groupings (consecutive or random) to allow the students to participate in oral exchanges.

Group Chats. This allows Chat rooms to be set up, either for the whole class or for groups of students, where the students can communicate in writing. The teacher can also record these sessions.

Private conversation and Help. The students can call the teacher if they need individual attention and talk to him/ her in private without having to leave their workstations, and without disturbing their classmates.

General Call. This allows the teacher to take control of all the classroom workstations and speak to the class as a whole, even if the students are working on different activities.

broadcasting

The teacher controls the classes, supervising and maintaining control of all the activities taking place at all times, hence taking full advantage of the time spent on classroom activities.

Supervision. The teacher can see the students’ screens from his/her workstation, and listen to the students taking part in conversations, pair work and group work, and at the same time record them if he/ she wishes. The teacher can focus on individual students, monitoring the students one by one or get a general overview of the whole class.

Remote access. The teacher can remotely take over control of the student’s computer without having to leave his/ her workstation, switch the computer on or off, or block the computer in order to get the student’s attention.

Guidance. The teacher automatically executes the programs on the students’ computers, denying them access to software they are not authorized to use, or sending files with exercises for the students to complete. In this way, the organization, sending and receiving of work is simplified in a personalized manner.

To make teaching and learning easier in the classroom, Optimas School has several different management tools which facilitate these tasks.

Identification. The students are identified by their names in the graphic interface of Optimas School, so the teacher knows at all times which student is seated in front of each computer.

Library. The teacher has an advanced, shared classroom resource management system to store teaching material and make it available to the students, establishing access privileges if necessary.

Profiles. Each teacher can create their own configuration profiles, save them and retrieve them in later classes. This configuration includes the way in which the classroom can be viewed, the groups and channels created, etc., so that these can be used again for similar activities or with different students.
