TCI CuttingLASER DIVISION TCI Cutting is highly experienced in the development and manufacture
of laser cutting and water jet cutting machinery, as well as designing software to
minimise costs and maximize productivity.
TCI Cutting is committed to innovation and to technological development,
so we have now added a new series of laser cutters to our range: the Smartline 3015
Series with CO2 and Fiber Technology.
We offer our clients the highest quality technical support, training, and
a comprehensive parts and consumables stock, together with excellent personal
customer service.
Features of the laser
• CO2
• Fiber
CO2 lasers use a mixture of gases to produce the laser beam. The high
pressure required in the resonator to excite the gas is generated by hard-wearing
semiconductor modules which are small, efficient and reliable.
CO2 technology is suitable for cutting a variety of materials, such as
heavy plate metals, wood, acrylic, glass, paper, textiles, plastics, leather and
stone. The machine delivers high productivity for all thicknesses of metal up to
30mm, as well as for tubular pieces.
When O2 alone is used in the cutting process, the speed is more or less
the same as with the fiber system for thicknesses greater than 6mm.
Fiber lasers feature the latest technology in laser cutting. The laser
beam is generated in an active fiber leading to the cutting head through a
transportation fiber via diodes and fiber cabling.
Fiber lasers tend to be smaller in size than CO2 lasers but they deliver
double the power output using the same amount of current. These machines are
suitable for working with sheet metals up to an average thickness of 12mm and
with non-ferrous metals such as copper and brass.
Access to the fiber laser is restricted for safety reasons because the
diffuse laser reflections are highly dangerous to eyesight. The focal diameter is
very small, delivering one hundred times the intensity of the CO2 machine.
03 • L
aser A
dvantages
• CO2 Excellent cutting quality and low production costs
• Fiber Flexible and energy efficient
• Exceptional access to the machine because the length of the beam does not cause damage to the eyes. No additional equipment is required to cut square shaped tubing. Steel plates and
other IP elements can be cut very easily.
• Auto-focus inter-change facility. Highly automated collision detection, lens cassette changer, nozzle changer and nozzle centering. These special features prevent wasting unproductive
time and improve safety in the workplace. The operator has less ‘hands on’ time at the machine, thus allowing him to concentrate on planning and controlling the workload.
• A better quality finish than with fiber laser technology for thicknesses greater than 5mm.
• High production output with all sheet metal thicknesses and for tubular pieces. Suitable for high volume cutting production of all thicknesses.
• Low production costs due to hard-wearing semiconductor excitation and a maintenance-free magnetic bearing turbine.
• Great flexibility. Easy cutting of non-ferrous metals, such as copper and brass, with exceptional quality.
• Unbeatable high production output of fine thickness pieces.
• High cutting speed for thicknesses of less than 4mm.
• Low production and maintenance costs due to low power consumption and no resonator gas requirement.
• The compact design takes up minimal space but with no size limitation.
• Lens changeover required only once yearly, within a ‘clean room’ environmentally controlled area. The same lens can be used for working on all types of thicknesses and materials,
with an approximate lifecycle of between 4.000 and 5.000 hours.
• The exceptional efficiency of the fiber laser guarantees greatly reduced electricity consumption. This machine is 86% more energy efficient than the CO2 laser.
• The fiber laser is suitable for the marking, finishing and detailing of the pieces to be cut.
• The machine is easy to install and fast to get into operation.
• With the fiber machine, the cutting speed for thicknesses of less than 6mm, is 5 when operating using N2, is up to 5 times faster.
Advantages
CO2 versus
Fiber With regard to the thickness of the sheet metal to be cut, the CO2 laser is able to process up to 30mm
thickness, whilst the fiber laser can only be used for cutting fine and medium thickness sheet metal up to 20mm.
With regard to machine access, the length of the fiber laser beam is 1.064 nm compared with 10.6 nm
in the CO2 laser; the fiber laser beam is therefore ten times weaker thus requiring much more rigorous safety
measures during operation as the laser reflections can cause damage to eyesight. Conversely, the CO2 laser features
exceptionally good accessibility but without the danger to eyesight.
Due to the fact that the fiber laser is more energy efficient and does not require resonator gas, the costs
are lower than with the CO2 laser. The benefit is of between 8% and 10% for each energy unit passing through the
CO2 cutting system whilst the maximum to be expected with the fiber laser system is between 25% and 30%.
As the CO2 laser uses mirrors to bring the beam to the lens, these have to be sited at a specific distance,
thus requiring the machine to be larger in size than the fiber laser machine, which is very compact in design and
takes up very little space.
The CO2 machine requires the use of two lenses which have to be changed depending on the thickness
and the type of the material to be cut and whose lifecycle is approximately 1.000 hours. The fiber laser machine only
uses one single lens with a lifecycle of between approximately 4.000 and 5.000 hours.

Divergence compensation system
The monoblock frame is robust, and flexible, and the bridge is constructed from
stabilized structural steel so that it is rigid but also light weight. The compensation axis (B) and
the X axis work in perfect synchronization together with the cutting head and this ensures that
the length, the diameter and the energy distribution of the beam always remain constant. Using
this system, the cutting quality is constantly maintained in all parts of the table.
The TCI Cutting Powerline series of laser cutting machines are manufactured on
the ‘floating optical’ pattern, the sheet metal is firmly supported on the table during the cutting
process and the cutting head moves above it.
The machine uses FANUC motors to move between the X and Y axes. A Servo Motor is
used for the Z axis (vertical cutting head movement). The positioning precision at all the axes is
0.02mm and the repeatability is 0.05mm. The use of the Servo Motor enables a high positioning
speed and, more importantly, acceleration of up to 9,8m/s2.
• Constant distance between the laser and the cutting head.
• The same cutting quality in all positions on the table.
• The laser beam can be adjusted to suit the application required.

Mechanical compensation cart for the B axis
The Powerline series of machines are constructed with variable accele-
ration, so that the motorization applied at the 5 axes of the machine, can reach high
levels of acceleration due to, the perfect bridge dynamic analysis, and the contrasted
precision, and high velocity of the CO2 laser cutter.
The Servo Motors, use the movement of the bridge at both sides of the
table (Y axis), and for the movement of the cutting head on the bridge (X axis).
The compensation unit works in parallel, with the X lineal axis at the side of the
resonator and is synchronized with the cutting head, so that the length of the beam,
the diameter and the energy distribution, between the resonator and the cutting head
remain constant.
This system results in perfectly uniform cutting
over the entire surface of the table.

Sealed CO2 ROFIN Laser Resonator
ROFIN manufactures a wide selection of CO2 lasers ranging, from fully sealed
machines to multi-KW lasers, and with a choice of power output from 30 to 8.000 watts.
Whether for use in laser cutting, soldering, structuring, perforating, drilling or marking. the
ROFIN CO2 lasers are always the perfect choice. Their total reliability, low maintenance cost and
excellent beam quality has made them an essential tool for today’s productivity.
The revolutionary principle of the SC series of sealed lasers, with output ranging from
100 to 600 watts, completes the powerful CO2 laser range of ROFIN machines. The SC lasers
are fully sealed, thus eliminating the need for gas recirculation equipment such as, vacuum
pumps or pressure control systems. The interior gas only has to be changed every 16.000 hours,
thus involving minimal cost. The full range of SC lasers is based on a unique design and the
resonator, produces the laser light using lineal polarization.
Power and precision are the defining characteristics of the SC series with their generalized
application. The lasers are light weight and extremely robust, so that it is very easy to integrate
them with other mechanical equipment.

CO2 FANUC Laser Resonator
FANUC is the main manufacturer of CNC numerical control, and servo motor systems
and has invented the ‘laser packet’ solution. The laser source, the CNC numerical control system
and the servo motor system, work perfectly together, as a completely integrated installation.
All the algorithms required to control the laser, and the diagnostics form part of the CNC
numerical control system, so that the laser source does not need to be controlled separately.
The advantages of this kind of integrated package are evident: effective and reliable start up
for a new laser machine, simplified manageability, monitoring and maintenance, as well as
the integration of numerous special functions, offering the user a wide spectrum of specialist
knowledge concerning laser applications.
The CO2 FANUC laser sources, use the most advanced technology, such as fully
transistorized RF Unload units, combined with intelligent solutions to further increase the
reliability and lifecycle of the installation.
The continuous mode carbon dioxide lasers are ultra powerful yet easily accessible.
They are also highly efficient; the ratio of pumping power (the excitation output) versus output
reaches 20%. CO2 lasers emit IR-light, their principal wavelength band comprises between 9,4
and 10,6 μm (micras).
CO2 carbon dioxide laser cutting, is the most important example of the use of
molecular lasers. The active medium in this laser, is carbon dioxide and the laser transitions
are created by means of the CO2 energy levels. N2 nitrogen gas and He helium gas, are both
important for the excitation process, and for the de-excitation process of the CO2 molecule.

IPG Laser resonator
IPG-PHOTONICS, is the world leader in high power fiber lasers, and fiber amplifiers,
and is revolutionising performance and profitability with a remarkable variety of materials, the
micro mechanical technology is used in telecommunications, medical applications and other
advanced systems.
IPG-PHOTONICS has manufacturing bases in the United States, Germany, Russia and
Italy with regional sales offices in many other countries.
IPG-PHOTONICS was established in 1990, by the physicist Valentin P. Gapontsev, a
pioneer in the field of fiber lasers.
The modern fiber laser, is composed of multimode high power diodes with a single
emitter or diode bars, usually passing through a cladding layer surrounding a single mode
nucleus. This unique style of nucleus ranges between 5 to 12 micras µm in diameter.
The double clad fiber consists of a unique internal nucleus doped with ions, such
as neody, erbium, ytterbium and tulium. The cladding is made of undoped glass with a small
refractive index. The pump light is injected into the cladding and then propagates along the
structure passing through the active nucleus core and producing a population inversion. The
emission wavelength depends on the options offered by the doped fiber and of the type of
reflector used (a typical example would be Bragg gratings).
