THE BOARD

In the spring of 1981, Pendragon, as yet unnamed, was coalescing its second production — Under Milkwood by Dylan Thomas. The fledgling group began to think that a name, an identity, would be good. A host of names was offered up. One person, drawn to the idea of the British Isles because of the then current production, fell upon Pendragon. Why? Uther Pendragon was the father of Arthur, “King of England.” Pendragon means chief leader of the British tribes. While not in England, we still hope to provide the lead or impetus towards excellence in theatre arts.

A Note from the current Artistic Director

When Bob and I moved to Saranac Lake, we never imagined 32 years! We were building a theatre. . . one day at a time.

The journey for us has been profound, demanding and exhilarat-ing.

We have not waivered from our commitment to diverse, vital theatre. We tell old and new stories, some serious, some funny, some challenging.

Our great respect for the community and region continues. We could not have survived without the extraordi-nary commitment and generosity of countless people.

As always, we applaud and extend heartfelt thanks to the many theatre artists, past and present, whose incredible passion, talents and unerring faith have partnered with us along the way.

The incoming directors, Karen and David, have a deep and strong commitment to Pendragon.

Their energy, vision and collective talents will guide the theatre forward with your support.

With deep gratitude to all,

Susan NealArtistic Director

A Note from the incoming Executive/Artistic Director

Why Pendragon? I’ve often been asked why I’ve continued to return to direct at Pendragon every summer for more than fifteen years. The answer has always been “Bob and Susan”. The question now is what does that mean and what is Pendragon without them. Bob and Susan are artists who lack ego, which is an almost impossible combination to find. They are willing to take risks by producing work they believe in and thereby creating an environ-ment where the play rather than the individual agenda is primary. Magnets for attracting like-minded collaborators, they foster a working environment where the process is as important as the product. This attitude has resulted in some of the best theater I’ve had the privilege to be involved with. Now I am entrusted to contin-ue the mission of the theater. I am dedicated to preserving and building upon their vision. Why Pendragon? The answer will be because Pendragon stands for theatrical excellence, egoless collaboration and service to the greater community. That said, the answer in my heart will always be “Bob and Susan.”

Peggy Orman (Stage Manager for Pinocchio & Shipwrecked) was last seen on the Pendragon stage in The Littlest Angel and Sweeney Todd and backstage as stage manager for Mousetrap. She credits Kent with giving her the hardest, scariest thing to deal with as a stage manager. Now everything else will be easy in comparison! (Trying to outdo yourself is not allowed). As always, much love and thanks to her family for “being there,” so she can be here.

Brandon Patterson Brandon Patterson (Jamie - The Last Five Years, Eric Parker - And A Nightingale Sang) is proud to help present several of this season’s amazing lineup of characters. He has recently performed in Dracula (Dracula), Sweeney Todd (Tobias), The Mousetrap (Christo-pher Wren), Moby Dick-Rehearsed (Flask), Private Eyes (Matthew), and To Kill a Mockingbird (Boo Radley/Mr.Gilmer), among many other favorites. Thanks to family and friends and all my wonderful casts and crews!

Clare Paulson has worked with Pendragon Theatre since 2007. Some of her previous shows include: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland as Alice, The Jungle Book as one of the wicked monkeys, and The Wizard of Oz as Dorothy. She’d like to thank her director & fellow cast for their love & humor. Special thanks and love to her parents, as always.

Bob Pettee (Managing Director, Louis - Shipwrecked !) is co-founder of Pendragon with wife Susan Neal. He has played many roles, both on stage. back-stage, in the back office, in crisis manage-ment, maintanence, fundraising, and… a few others. Pendragon has survived and flourished because hundreds, and really ~ Continued on pg 36

thousands of people have put their ego aside and thought of Pendragon as “we” Hundreds more have supported with contribution, in kind services and in many other ways. Pendragon is a com-munity. Thanks to you - and for those who will come - for helping to make the community flourish and grow. It has been a good, albeit at times, bumpy ride! Thank you, Atticus, The Puppet-master, Dodge, Lady Enid et al, Renfield, Scrooge, Lee, Roy, ... and whoever else may be hiding in the recesses.

Zachary Richards (Pinocchio) joined Pendragon last year as Dill in To Kill a Mockingbird. This summer he is biking, hiking, and turning ten years old. mmmmmmmmmmmmm

Binnie Ritchie Holum (Mam - And a Nightingale Sang) is returning to her favorite theatre for her seventh season. Some of her favorite roles have been in Angels in America, Ar-senic and Old Lace, Clean House, Bus Stop and The Gin Game. Last year she was seen in Les Liaisons Dangereuses and Mousetrap. As always, many thanks to Bob and Susan and to my folks for their long-term support and belief in Pendragon.

Laura-Jean Schwartau-Swanson (Director - The Last 5 Years) teaches in the Theatre Dept @ SUNY Platts-burgh and has been with Pendragon Theatre since 1989. She was most recently seen as Mrs. Lovett in last sea-son’s’ Sweeney Todd and played the title role in G.B. Shaw’s Candida in 09’. Thanks to Susan, Bob, and Kim for this fantastic venture with two amazing actors. We had a blast!

DIRECTOR’S NOTESThe Last Five Years won a Drama Desk Award for Best Music and Best Lyrics. It was noted as one of the 10 Best shows of 2001 by

Time Magazine. Jason Robert Brown hit the big time with this story of a love affair uniquely presented backwards and forwards

simultaneously. And the songs! While looking into the music I found that numerous reviewers gave it 5 stars. The original actors, Sherie Rene Scott and Norbert Leo Butz have subsequently both won Tony awards on B’way for other ventures. Jason Robert Brown has been likened as the next Sondheim, and has written other amazing scores such as Parade, a musical that won both the Drama Desk and New

York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards for Best New Musical. His newest musical is titled 13.

The Last Five Years is autobiographical, so much so, that Brown’s former wife threatened a lawsuit, forcing him to change some

lyrics and details of the show. When the two cast members and I first discussed the show we each felt that a different character was

more to blame in the down fall of their relationship. Our opinions changed daily and evolved as we came to realize that the characters Jamie and Cathy equally contribute to their own demise. You might

see a little of their qualities in yourself- I know I did. So try not to judge them too harshly.

Matt Sorensen (Director - Pinocchio, Clown - The 39 Steps) is pleased to return to Pendragon for another summer of wackiness. A Company member since Fall 2000, he is happy to keep playing with this great company. mmmmmmmmmm

Kent Streed (Resident Set/Costume Designer, Box Office Manager, Ge-petto - Pinocchio) has been a year round company member at Pendragon Theatre for many years and looks forward to carrying on that work for many more. Enjoy the shows, enjoy the summer and wish the singu-larly “old school” Mr Streed well as he enters the new computerized era at the box office.

Ross Taylor (Richard Hannay - The 39 Steps) is delighted to be debuting with Pendragon Theater. Ross is a NYC actor with regional credits in Zoo Story (Jerry), Cabaret (Cliff ), Fool For Love (Eddie), Equus (Alan Strang) and Our Town (Stage Manager). Ross spends most of his time teaching guitar and performing/writing improv and sketch at one of the city’s many comedy theaters.

Tim Wagoner (Clown- The 39 Steps) This is Tim’s first time performing with Pendragon Theater. He is a North Country native and just finished his Bachelor’s degree in theater at SUNY Plattsburgh. Recent shows include On the Verge and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, both at SUNY Plattsburgh. His most recent project has been revising and developing his show, Support, a study exploring human behavior and addiction.

David B. Zwierankin (Lighting Design - Pinocchio, And A Nightin-gale Sang, Shipwrecked/Technical Director) is happy to be beginning his 2nd season with Pendragon. He attended SUNY Potsdam, where he studied Theatre and Theatre Education. Previous Pendragon productions include Lighting Designs for Pinocchio, To Kill a Mockingbird and Bus Stop, as well as Stage Manager for The Mystery of Irma Vep.

The Case for Endowment

Pendragon has established itself as a vibrant regional resource, unique in its program and service to the region. The magic of

Saranac Lake and the immediate environs have been the cradle and spring board for that regional reach. Yet Pendragon’s measure of success in the past is no indicator that such will always be the case. Theatres are a very special breed of not-for-profit. Theatres

by their very nature must take risks. They are subject to failure often based on elements as diverse as public whims and fads, economic

weaknesses, even suspicion about the value of theatre itself. Many of these factors are amplified in a rural environment.

Pendragon seeks to build its endowment in order to ensure its capacity to take risks and provide services to a region where there is so little consistent theatre. It seeks to build its endowment so that

educational services can continue to grow. They will create new audiences who continue to value theatre as a cultural necessity; who see it as more than a luxury item reserved for an elite group.

Please contact the theatre if you would like to explore the many ways you can help the endowment grow. Thank you!

Some thoughts from the Managing Director

I don’t usually write a letter or comment for the year round program. Today, however, I felt compelled. I had an interesting conversation with a patron in the lobby. The Patron said: “I heard Pendragon was sold.” I corrected her. Pendragon has not been “sold.” I tried to unravel the rumor.

We announced that a transition was underway. We announced that current directors Bob Pettee and Susan Neal would be moving on. We announced that new leadership was in place – we did a lot of things, but we did not report that the Theatre was sold! Pendragon is chang-ing but is still very much” on mission”.

Change is a good thing. Pendragon is a not for profit corporation tran-sitioning from a founder driven phase to a Board driven phase. More importantly, Pendragon is you-- the audience member, the school-teacher, the student, an organization that needs a gift to auction, the school that needs a costume to rent. Pendragon is all of this and more.

We are open for business for many years to come!

Individual contributors and corporate sponsors are of immeasurable importance to Pendragon. Our sincere thanks to the following individuals, companies and foundations that supported Pendragon from June 2010 through May 2011. We regret any errors or omissions; if any are identified, please bring them to our attention. The following list reflects direct contributions; many other individuals and businesses have supported the theatre’s fundraising efforts in countless different ways. And, of course, without those who purchase tickets and attend our performances, we wouldn’t be celebrating our 32nd anniversary as the only year-round professional theatre in the Adirondacks!
