Do you think we will ever be able to see beyond our differences and accept each other with respect? The three of us, paused, looked at each other, and then with sad hearts said almost as one, “Probably not!” How easy it is to label, judge and categorize people into various camps: Republican, Democrat; conservative, liberal; believer, non-believer; rich, poor; worthy, unworthy. The saddest thing, is that we elevate small, insignificant things and fail to care about real issues that are important to everyone. This shortsighted, closed-minded view of life, of God… is true of us today… it was true for people at the time of Jesus. My heart was broken again this week hearing about another priest who abused children… while seeing our church focused on unimportant rules that are supposed to keep us thinking and acting as one. No one can disagree with someone without instantly being labeled the enemy. The issues may have varied a bit over the years, but we still hear the “who’s in and who’s out” conversation about the followers of Jesus. Someone asks Jesus, “Lord, will only a few be saved?” It sounds like the person wants to be able to have tidy labels and put people in their proper place… of course justifying themselves as being one of the saved. Jesus simply says, “Enter the narrow gate. Assume that you’re all outsiders and try the best that you can. Don’t try to assess who’s in or out. Don’t pretend to be able to read someone else’s heart… focus on yourself and how much you love, how much more you can do to treat everyone as your brother or sister. None of you are worthy… I am the one who makes all of you worthy. The last will be first and the first will be last.” What if we really lived our lives accepting the good in everyone? What if we put aside our various litmus tests to determine which camp a person belonged in? What if we didn’t assume that we were the few filing through the narrow gate? What if had we had a bit of humility and assumed the position of outcasts just trying to do our best? I dare say if we assume that everyone is trying to do their best, that others are as broken as we are, that they need God and Jesus as much as we do… we would have a much different faith. THE LAST WILL BE FIRST…OR…WHO’S OUT? WHO’S IN?

Last week I was playing golf with a good friend. Since it was just the two of us, they paired up a single player. It took about 12 holes of chit chat, “How about those Bengals or Reds?” etc. before our companion was brave enough to ask, “Do you think our country will ever be able to talk to one another again? Do you think we will ever be able to see beyond our differences and accept each other with respect? HERE WE GO STEELERS! HERE WE GO!

Yes, I know it is strange to cheer for the Steelers in Bengals country. Since my roots go back to Pittsburgh, I, for better or worse, follow the Steelers and support them. For the past several years, I have invited other Steeler fans to help me put a basket together for St. Susanna Festival. I always donate two tickets for the Bengals/Steelers game in Paul Brown Stadium. If any Steelers fans at St. Susanna would like to donate an item for the basket this year, that would be fantastic. Please begin dropping off your donation to the parish office. Make sure you identify the object for the Steeler basket and mark it to the attention of Fr. Bob. Thank you in advance for sharing your spirit and enthusiasm for the Steelers.

THIS WEEK, FROM THE ST. SUSANNA VINCENTIANS...

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us to “strive to enter through the narrow gate.” Our call to be disciples and to follow Jesus demands that we learn to live for the sake of others.

When we give to the poor, God indeed pours His love, peace and mercy into our hearts and into the hearts of those suffering in poverty.

AUGUST CAREGIVER SUPPORT MEETINGWednesday, August 28th at 7:00pm in the St. Julie Billiart Room

Please join us any 4th Wednesday evening. Ask questions or simply relax. There are several types of Caregivers that come to our get-togethers. We are looking forward to meeting you! Call Sharon Kipfer, 513-509-3278, with questions.

Jesus’ warning seems to be that when there is a mad rush to enter the front gate, those well-intentioned but out-of-practice souls who “don’t know him” might find themselves struggling to squeeze in.

Jesus and the Church don’t want that to happen to anyone. He invites us to get familiar, stop in often. He might say, “When you get here, just come in the side door!”

—Fr. Mark Haydu, LC

[Jesus said,] “Strive to enter through the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough.”

Luke 13:24

Just Come in the Side Door

This fragment is from a church ceiling fresco that crumbled and fell to the ground. It was

eventually added to the Vatican collection. A piece of rubble is now a priceless object of art. Viewers look up at the apostle from below as he gazes toward Christ’s divine glory.

We also are striving to attain that heavenly vision, and Jesus advises us on how to realize it. We should work to enter the smaller gate, the narrow door. It’s not the bigger main entrance that everyone uses. The narrow door is a less-traveled side entrance used by those who are close to the owner and his family. Christ invites us to be so familiar and comfortable with him that we come through the side door.

Many pass the Master’s house, know where it is, but have lost the practice of stopping inside. They know about God, even pray occasionally, and don’t hurt anyone. No doubt not hurting others is admirable, but there is so much more for someone baptized into Christ. We’re not called to merely avoid hurting others but to have a deep, transforming experience of healing love that we then share with others.
