Who we are

Who we areFounded in 1690, Barclays is older than the Bank of England, would you believe? Yet we’ve always been ahead of the times. From pioneering international trade finance and large-scale branch banking in over 30 countries, to launching the UK’s first cash machine, we’ve set the pace in the financial services industry.

And we have no intention of slowing down.

Game-changing ideas are the lifeblood of Barclays, and they can be sparked by absolutely anyone here. So you’ll be in good company – not just because our people are incredibly talented, but because we share the same values of Respect, Integrity, Service, Excellence and Stewardship.

It means we move as one team, and always pursue ‘better’. Better solutions. Better opportunities. For our interns and graduates, this all adds up to rewarding, challenging and flourishing careers.

Our work paves the way for businesses to expand, new infrastructure to be built and big ideas to become game-changing innovations. Ultimately, it means helping millions of people create new opportunities.

The services we provide cover financial advisory, capital raising, financing and risk management for corporations, governments and financial institutions. And together, they present all sorts of different ways to develop your career.

You could become an expert in mergers and acquisitions. You might want to learn how to structure complex financial products. Maybe you’re interested in becoming a trader. Or perhaps you’d like to focus on delivering leading macro-economic research.

Whatever your calling, and whether you’re interested in an internship or a graduate role, there’s something for you in one of our three business areas: Banking, Markets and Research.

Investment Bank at Barclays

Fast-paced. Fascinating. Rewarding. Worthwhile. A career within our Investment Bank is all of these things, and more.

The opportunities and challenges in this part of our business come thick and fast – and in all shapes and sizes. They range from acquisitions, financing, divestitures and restructurings to equity and debt origination, exclusive sales and takeover defence. No matter which team you join, we’ll help you find your passion and take your skills to a whole new level.

We operate in three major business units:

Capital Markets Within Capital Markets there are several teams that specialise in different areas – including equity and debt origination, loans, structuring, risk management and syndication. Here’s a quick overview of each one:

• Debt Capital Markets

Help universities to invest in new buildings. And support utilities to invest in green energy. Or how about working on some of the largest acquisitions across the globe? These are just a few examples of what it means to raise debt financing for corporates, sovereigns, supranational entities and financial institutions.

• Risk Solutions Group

Here you’ll help clients identify and deal with risks to their business arising from the financial markets – such as moves in interest rates, foreign exchange rates and inflation. So it’ll be up to you to create spot-on solutions that navigate these ever-evolving risks.

• Equity Capital Markets

This is where you’ll originate and execute equity and equity-linked transactions, including Initial Public Offerings (IPOs), private placements, convertible bonds and share repurchases. It’s fast-paced, strategic and always interesting.

• Leveraged Finance

For companies that already have a considerable amount of debt and need to generate funding, this team steps in. Because the funding is riskier and more costly, you’ll help design, structure and syndicate unique financing solutions, using high yield bonds and leveraged loans.

Corporate Finance Mergers and Acquisitions TeamsWorking for our corporate clients, you’ll advise a diverse and international range of companies. It means collaborating with other Investment Bank teams to deliver holistic, structured solutions – whether that’s mergers and acquisitions, capital raising or risk management.

Financial Institutions GroupWe help our clients thrive in today’s challenging and evolving financial landscape. How? By providing them with our whole banking product suite – including mergers and acquisitions, solutions in managing the regulatory framework, and execution capabilities to access equity and debt capital markets. So here, you’ll use this integrated approach to support our banking, insurance, asset management and financial technology clients around the world.

Our Research teams dig deeper into what’s driving the world’s financial markets and economies, cutting through the noise to provide clients with an instant, yet thorough, analysis of the investment landscape. Their work is about generating powerful investment ideas on the back of sector and global trends. And they do it while building relationships with some of the bank’s most important clients.

Credit ResearchWe’re organised into four groups: high yield, investment grade, emerging markets and strategy. No matter which group you work in, you’ll liaise directly with clients and other teams to give them a summary of our views on a sector or credit, and how valuations might be affected by specific events.

Equity ResearchProviding fundamental research on nearly 1,700 companies across the Americas and Europe, this award-winning team is the analytical backbone of our bank. You’ll identify industry trends and individual company inflection points, as well as come up with investment ideas based on your independent and objective primary research.

Macro ResearchWith strategists and analysts working side-by-side, there’s a diverse amount of work here. You’ll develop and present our view on economics and bonds, and craft recommendations based on these views. It’ll see you liaise with different teams across Barclays, and clients themselves.

Join us in ResearchOur Markets business is a barometer of world events – not to mention an incredible place to fulfil your potential. Here, you’ll work closely with clients to help them achieve their life and investment ambitions. There is a number of different areas you could specialise in:

Sales Key to the growth of our clients’ businesses – and our own – our Sales teams deliver up-to-the-minute advice and a round-the-clock service. It means working with high-profile clients with significant capital to invest. And it’ll be your job to match their needs to our products and services.

Structuring Structurers are entrepreneurs and project managers, who help to set Barclays apart by creating innovative investment ideas and solutions. You’ll make sure products can be efficiently hedged in the markets, provide content to Sales teams and bring technical expertise to client meetings.

Trading This team trades a wide range of products – from foreign currency to interest rates, credit and equities (stocks). You’ll be on the pulse of market movements to make informed decisions, while building up that all-important trust with your client. Yes, it’s fast-paced. But it’s all about the team working together.

Quantitative Analytics The breakthroughs that happen here keep us at the forefront of our industry. This is where our innovative tools and models are built. You’ll provide modelling and analytics development advice. And deliver solutions for risk management, changes in markets structure, capital utilisation, derivatives pricing and strategic technological advancements.

Trade Capture Team This is where we capture trade information quickly and accurately. You’ll make sure all trades placed are accepted with the right terms and adjusted as necessary to manage risk. It’ll see you work closely with the Trading and Sales teams – weighing in on the design and implementation of system architecture to support trade capture.

Financial Resources ManagementJoin this team, and you’ll be responsible for managing some of Barclays’ most challenging global portfolios. It’s about structuring complex deals, devising innovative investment strategies and pioneering client-led financing and lending activities.

Learning and DevelopmentSome graduate careers leave you to fend for yourself. Not at Barclays. Our well-structured Learning and Development Programme will help you from day one, right through to your next big steps. Whatever you need to progress, we’ll be there to take you further than ever before.

Your future depends on continuous learning and development. But with our ever-changing digital world, your way of learning needs to change with it. So it’s time to challenge tradition and focus more on experiences, connections and opportunities.

We’re moving away from formal classroom arrangements towards more social and experiential environments that encourage innovative thinking. Simply put, we’re making your learning more focused around you.

If you’re a potential intern, you’ll enjoy this same commitment to your development. We’ll never throw you in at the deep end, and we’ve created a similarly structured plan to provide all the support, training and guidance you need.

From the moment you arrive, you’ll begin learning about the ins and outs of life at Barclays. For graduates, that means taking part in an initial training programme, and our interns will have an equally insightful induction. Expect things like attending talks by senior leaders across Barclays, or getting involved in interactive sessions with your peers. And that’s just the start.

Diversity and Inclusion

Our people bring unique talents, backgrounds and perspectives. It’s what our success depends on. That’s why having an inclusive environment where individuals can be themselves is so important. And why we’ve built our culture on nurturing and empowering everyone at Barclays.

What’s more, we recognise the power of embracing difference. It fuels change, and levels the playing field for all. To us, it means creating opportunities – not just for the bank, but for our teams, clients and the communities we serve.

We focus on five key areas: Disability; Gender; LGBTQ+; Multicultural; and Multigenerational.

DisabilityOur commitment to supporting those with a disability or health condition will never falter. In fact, we’ve won awards for our positive approach to disability and we strive to do even more. We’ll always make sure people have everything they need to excel with us, both during the recruitment process and in the workplace, by providing support and adjustments when needed.

GenderWe have one of the best women’s networks in the UK. And that’s all down to our passion and drive to engage people across Barclays to attract, retain and boost the development of talented women. But what sets us apart is a combination of many things. Such as championing events like International Women’s Day, the HeForShe campaign and our Global Women in Leadership Conference. And bringing in external speakers including Helen Pankhurst, Samantha Cameron and Mary Baker. Not to mention our own incredible development, wellbeing and citizenship events. Ultimately, we support women of all ages and at all stages of their career, and value the support of our male colleagues to encourage gender equality.

Why us?

LGBTQ+At Barclays, we support all colleagues across the broad spectrum of sexuality and gender identity. We celebrate the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community, and have created an inclusive work environment where colleagues feel confident and respected for who they are. Outside of the office, we’ve been a headline sponsor of Pride in London for five years running. In the UK, we’re also included in a special group of eight companies that sit above Stonewall’s Top 100 Employers.

MulticulturalWe’re proud to support a workforce that brings together a rich kaleidoscope of nationalities, cultures, religions and backgrounds. It means we’re able to better reflect the communities we serve and truly understand what matters most to our clients around the world. Our own multicultural network, Embrace, helps to create a sense of belonging and inclusiveness across Barclays – while empowering people to develop their careers. It gives access to things like leadership training, mentoring and breakfast sessions with senior leaders (to name a few).

MultigenerationalWe want to make sure people from all generations, and at all life stages, feel welcome and supported at Barclays. It’s why we provide the tools and programmes to help people achieve their ideal work-life balance, while still providing excellent career development opportunities.
