DRUIDS ROCKED AGAIN

CEFN DRUIDS 1 GUILSFIELD 2

In spite of having won all of their games away from the Rock, Druids inability to win at home

showed again on Friday night as they slumped to their sixth home defeat of the season. Druids

controlled the first half hour without really creating much in the final third although they had

several half chances, with Guilsfield very much second best. However a rare break down the left

on 28 minutes saw Guilsfield take the lead against the run of play. With Druids now struggling

to keep hold of the ball Guilsfield came more into the game and deservedly went in at half time a

goal to the good.

With Druids needing an early goal to get back into the game in the second half it arrived with

only 5 minutes gone. A corner from the right led to a scramble in the goal mouth and after

several attempted clearances Matty Holt scored his first goal for the club, heading home after the

ball rebounded off the crossbar. This should have spurred Druids on but it only had the opposite

effect with Guilsfield beginning to dictate play

and it only took another 12 minutes for them to

regain the lead. Guilsfield’s Adam Jenkins

found himself in loads of space on the right

and he fired an unstoppable shot past McGee

in Druids goal. Only a fine save from McGee

stopped the visitors from extending their lead

when he turned a goal bound header from Henderson over the bar.

In the remaining time Druids failed to test the visitor’s keeper who had a comparatively easy

night and with two consecutive home games coming up, it left the home fans wondering where

the next home win would come from.

DRUIDS U12’s 6 PORTHMADOG 0

A very good start by Druids put them two goals ahead thanks to Cobie Prescott-Lees and a brilliant long range effort from Ben Williams. Some excellent football was played by both teams making it a very entertaining game to watch. The first half ended with a superb solo goal from Callum Foster.

Porthmadog started the second half brighter and some fan-tastic defending by the Druids defenders kept the score the same. Callum Foster was then able to add another goal with a counter attack move and the game finished with Morgan Bagnall and Dan Smith finishing from close range to make the final score 6-0. Coach Adam Hesp said “It was a very pleasing performance by the team.”

U15 NEWS

Cefn Druids U15’s were without a game this weekend but Coaches Phil Bathers and Josh Millington have been busy strengthening their squad.

They have announced the signing of local boy Callum Rainey. Callum is a tireless hard working midfield player who plays for Chirk Youth on a Satur-day. Coaches Phil Bathers and Josh Millington said “Callum will prove to be an excellent addition to the squad and he will benefit both himself and the team and we are delighted he has signed for Cefn Druids.”

DRUIDS U14’s 9 PORTHMADOG 1

After falling behind Druids quickly rallied and played a

very quick passing game to score 5 without reply before

the break. Druids maintained their confidence and play-

ing style in the second half and although they eased up in

the last 15 minutes, still added another 4 before the final

whistle. Druids performed well in a game that posed

them little threat.

Druids goalscorers were Tom Edwards (4), Harvey

Edwards (3), Tomos James and Harry Bowen with the

final goal.

Team- Hudson Parry, Jack Andrews, Luke Stanley, Tom Garston, Toby Green, Kurt Rushton, Morgan Lewis, Harrison Robson, Finlay Clough, Luke Maddocks, Lewis Clutton, Jack Turnbull, Ben Davis, Tomos Dickinson, Harry Killock. An excellent performance from an improv-ing Druids team. After dominating the first half, Druids got their reward through a headed Luke Maddocks goal from a Jack Turnbull Cross. Druids implemented a "play from the back ethos" early on in the game which allowed them to control game. Flint pressed and dominated the second period however, the defensive resilience was strong enough to hold out to seal an impressive result for the Cefn Druids u13s. Excellent performances from the back four and excellent display by Hudson Parry in goal.

DRUIDS U16’s 4 PORTHMADOG 0

A brilliant win for the U16 today. Two goals from Kyle Walker made it 2-0 at half time. Porthmadog came out sec-ond half all fired up but were no match for Druids who scored an early goal seven minutes in from Shaun Phelan. The same player scored his second of the afternoon thirteen minutes later. An outstanding performance by all players.

THE NEW SAINTS U19’s 2 DRUIDS U19’S 1

Druids travelled to champions TNS, which is always a

difficult place to go, but made harder today with the

hosts playing former Wrexham & Wales International

Steve Evans at the heart of their defence as an over age

player. However Druids took the lead after 16 minutes

through Kev Day, a lead they held until half time.

Druids defended resolutely in second half while still

looking dangerous on the counter attack. TNS equalised

on 70 minutes from a set play free kick and after a

melee in the box, Steve Evans forced home what was

to prove to be the winner on 80 minutes. Druids still

had time to have an effort disallowed for offside and

Alex Godfrey forced the TNS keeper into a fine save

but Druids could not find an equaliser.

The outcome may not have been the right result but the

players today were a credit to the club and put in a fabu-

lous performance.

A look at the league tables below from 50 years ago, the local football scene looked somewhat

different than today with many of the clubs long gone. The leading clubs then are still around with

the two Buckley clubs now amalgamated and Druids were then languishing near the foot of the

table and Cefn Albion were not even formed. Welsh Premier League club Bala Town were then in

Division 2 and Airbus were yet to be formed.

A sign of the times were the number of works teams playing in the Welsh National League, all of

which are now defunct, a result in the decline in local industry today.

Champions Cefn Druids were promoted to the League of Wales and were replaced by Holywell Town. No teams were relegated from the Cymru Alliance, which had operated with sixteen teams in the previous term. Llangefni Town , winners of the Welsh Alliance, and Corwen Amateurs, Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) champions, joined the league on promotion. But the withdrawal of Mostyn on the eve of the campaign, after finishing bottom in 1998/99, saw the Cymru Alliance function with seventeen clubs. Glantraeth led the way after completing the first half of their fixtures, from Welsh pool Town and Oswestry Town, although Llandudno, with a game in hand, posed a danger to the leading trio. As the season progressed into the final quarter, just four points encompassed Oswestry Town , Flint Town United, Welshpool Town and Glantraeth, with Llandudno still in the championship race. Eventually it was the Park Hall club who prevailed by three points from Glantraeth, despite a three point deduction, to claim their sec-ond Cymru Alliance title in five seasons. Cemaes Bay came out of the pack to finish in third place, above former League of Wales rivals Welshpool, Porthmadog and Flint Town United. Oswestry Town completed a double, after defeating league rivals Buckley Town in the North East Wales Challenge Cup final, but the Park Hall club were unable to claim a treble when they lost to Welsh-pool Town in the League Cup final. The Maesydre club won their own double, by retaining the Central Wales Challenge Cup, overcoming Mid Wales League outfit Penrhyncoch in the final. Glantraeth completed what was to be their most successful season so far, by adding a North Wales Coast FA Cup final appearance to their runners-up position. Unfortunately, the Bodorgan club were overwhelmed 5 -0 by Northern Premier League outfit Colwyn Bay in the coast final. The Cymru Alliance flag reached the Third round of the Welsh Cup in 1998/99, with Llandudno and Rhydymwyn losing to Bangor City and Barry Town respectively, while Llangefni Town suc-cumbed, on Anglesey , to Caerleon. Oswestry Town were able to take their place in the League of Wales, after missing out five years earlier, and they replaced Caernarfon Town in the top flight. Corwen Amateurs' sojourn in the Cymru Alliance was to be a brief one and they returned to the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area), to be replaced by Halkyn United, Welsh Alliance win-ners, and Welsh National (Wrexham Area) champions British Aerospace, who would now be known as Airbus UK.
