What is a library?

• All humans need to innovate themselves and be inspired by meeting knowledge, information og experience

• The libraries are the places where the citizen’s will meet inspiration, experience and ideas. Either alone in a shared public space or by meeting other people.

• The libraries supports every single citizens possibillity to create change in there own lives through inspiration, social encounter and communities and with an eventuality to contribute to social reform.

The Knowledge Society

• From – libraries for books/medias

– industial society

• to – libraries for man/human

– networked/knowledge society

Knud Schulz Helsinki March 2015 18

Knud Schulz Helsinki March 2015

The strategy for changing

• The need for rethinking the

library

• The need for a fusion

between physical – virtual

• Develop partnerships

• Focus on innovation

• Get new skills into the library

and promote learning in the

organization

• Force users to dismiss the

book as library brand 19

Modern library practice and

strategies – means that roles

constantly change

3. The vision and values

Knud Schulz Helsinki March 2015 21

Knud Schulz Helsinki March 2015 26

Three Statements

• Last responsible minute for decisions

• Inclusion and participation

• Interdisciplinary Co-operation

The right team at the right time

Knud Schulz Helsinki March 2015

The library as a space

– in the future?

• The building supports the needs

of the users

• The building interacts with the

surroundings and environment

• The building acts adaptively

27

5. Force to switch thinking

• Use tools , new models, statements

People’s Lab How can libraries work with

makerspaces?

Reflections

You can work with makerculture without having a makerspace!

35 Knud Schulz Helsinki March 2015

Making in Libraries

• Contributes to activities that provide public value by stimulating the development of network, skills and innovation

• Contributes to the libraries' relationship with its local community

• Increases the social value of libraries, as public spaces that bridge between different communities and knowledge domains

• Challenges libraries strategic and managerial capacity for innovation

36 Knud Schulz Helsinki March 2015

6. New ways of defining the

functionality

• Flexibility is the functionality

• Maximize unprogrammed space

• Leave the media and mediaformats as the

focus point in organizing the space

• Focus the human needs og sociality – use

the 4 space model

Partner proces

Knud Schulz Helsinki March 2015 43

Proces of Interruptions

- Internal discussion

- Selection of people and groups – who

don’t we normally talk to?

- Eight group sessions - Tell us about

YOUR world

- Analyses of findings

Knud Schulz Helsinki March 2015 44

Foundation of partnership

strategy

- A partnership strategy that allows us to be

pro-active

- Reasons to say no

- Branding

- Clearer communication with potential

partners

- Focused partnership work inside

Benefit

- Citizens – more programmes and services,

quality, diversity, target oriented

- Partners – communication, accessibility,

numbers, outreach

- Library – focused outreach, new services,

new developments, branding, focused

communication to users

8. Mental construction

Knud Schulz Helsinki March 2015 49

Adaptive and innovative supporting

spaces • libraries are changing from storing

books to supporting citizens’ needs

• innovation spaces for local communities

Transformation Lab II

Knud Schulz Helsinki March 2015 51

Stageing Dokk1 –

mental construction

• Create an illusion of the building under construction

• Walk in the 3D model

• Setting the stage for tests, user operated services,

innovations, new designs, incl. elements to be used in

the new building

• Involve the users in the work

• Prepare the citizens

• Prepare the staff

• Brand the new library

Mental construction

• From tradition to transcendence – the

users and staff deconstruct ”old

knowledge” to create new sense
