PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Selective High School Test Applicants for Year 7 placement in a selective high school in 2019 are required to take the Selective High

Page 2: The - lidcombe-p.schools.nsw.gov.au

School Placement Test to be held from 9.00am to 1.30pm on Thursday 15 March 2018. Students must return to school afterwards or their absence will be recorded as a partial absence. The test centre for students from our school is:

Sefton High School Munro & Hector Sts SEFTON NSW 2162

All parents were sent a letter advising them about the test centre their child is required to attend. They were also sent a copy of a test information bulletin.

The test centre allocations and a copy of Test Information for Parents and Students are available to principals from the Department’s intranet site, https://detwww.det.nsw.edu.au/directorates/schoimpro/EMD/shs_publications.htm and parents may check test centre allocations at:-

Best Start reports For all of our Kindergarten parents, you would have now received your child’s Best Start report. This is not a formal report in the sense of your child’s achievements at school. It is actually communicating the starting point, where your child started when they first entered into Kindergarten. The Best Start report gives you as the parents, plenty of hints on how to support your child at home with their learning. Apart from the learning they could receive at home, it is also a special bonding time for either Mum or Dad (or both) to be part of their child’s learning, show interest and praise them for their efforts. An interesting comparison (though it isn’t the same type of report) will be your child’s half yearly and yearly reports, and what your child is able to do. Above all though, schooling is meant to be an enjoyable experience, so please make sure that you always speak about school in a positive light to your child(ren) and show genuine interest in the things at school that really excite your children. At the top of the Best Start reports, it states “Electronic approval required before distribution”- this has been done, so please don’t worry about this statement.

Hats Hats are becoming an issue within our school again. As a school community, we all need to be aware of the rules surrounding our school hats.

1. If a child has no hat outside, they are instructed to

play in the shade. If they defy this instruction, they

can be put onto detention.

2. Years K-4 are permitted to wear the Legionnaires

type cap (with a flap) or the bucket type hat.

Students are not to fold the flap inside the cap at

any time – the purpose of the flap is to protect

your children.

3. Years 5 and 6 get to wear a special cap. No other

grade will be permitted to wear this cap.

4. School Uniform Policy dictates that a school hat

must be worn. Please ensure that your child places

their school hat in their bag overnight so they don’t

forget it. If they lose their hat, we expect that it will

be replaced at your earliest convenience.

Thank you for your support in this matter.

Wonderful work – S2F Well done to Mr Windle and S2F, they are moving along with STEM at a very rapid rate. In the photos below, what you can see (as demonstrated by MinJee, Yulun, Lachlan, Matthew and Liyana) is an Ozmo made to look like a boat from the first fleet, following a sea trail on a world map, replicating the voyage of the first fleet. Absolutely impressive !

Page 3: The - lidcombe-p.schools.nsw.gov.au

Canteen Culture I want to re-iterate to our whole community what a fabulous job Healthy Kids Cucina Canteen are doing within our school. Beautiful, healthy food is being served and it’s very fresh. What I want to mention is the behaviour around buying from the canteen. Some stage 3 boys thought it would be fun to buy as much junk as they could, before sending others back to the canteen to do the same thing. This is a silly practice and it must stop. I have spoken to the boys in question and they know how I feel. I also spoke to all of stage 3. At our canteen, students will only buy for themselves and not anyone else. Students will buy a reasonable amount of food. Students will not be allowed to keep their own personal ‘tab’ at the canteen. Wherever possible, students will mainly eat ‘green’ items or healthy items on the canteen menu.

Car Parks / Parking Unfortunately, I must stress this particular point again, but in any case our new Kindergarten mums and dads might not be aware of this either. The car parking facilities (the Staff car park at end of Mills Street and the two located off Doodson Ave) must not be used by parents or carers to park in or walk through. One parent on our first day of school, in a maroon car, parked inside our grounds, let out their children and then proceeded to drive over our Basketball court to leave via Mills Street. Quite a few parents have been seen parking in our grounds or behaving in an unsafe manner outside the school, (mostly parents that know the rules !) but the fact is that if everyone started parking in our grounds, we would be seriously compromising the safety of the students. Please ensure you drop your child(ren) off outside the school in a safe manner or walk you children to and from school using the pedestrian access points, not through the car park. Other parents have now complained about our parents double parking in Doodson Ave and Mills St., or even parking over resident’s driveways. What is happening is extremely dangerous and stupid, with students getting out of cars from the wrong side of the car into oncoming traffic. Please do not double park to let your children out. It is against the law and I have no problem contacting the authorities and giving them your license plate number if you are doing the wrong thing out there. We now have a dedicated police officer appointed to oversee this situation, so if you are doing the wrong thing, you will be fined ! I would really appreciate your assistance in this matter.

Just a reminder The earliest time students should arrive at school is 8.30am. Any earlier than this means that I can’t guarantee their safety as a teacher will not be on the playground to supervise students until 8.30am. Please ensure your children arrive no earlier than 8.30am for their safety’s sake.

Closing the main school gate

If you are visiting the school during school hours and coming through the main school gate, please make sure the gate is closed behind you when you enter and when you leave to avoid a quick and easy exit for some of our younger students. We have a student in our school who is a flight risk, so this issue is very important !!! Also, we are keeping the pool gate near the Uniform Shop closed as well – please ensure when you walk through it, you close it behind you !

Art class has started The Arts Club has started and we have around 20 students that are very excited to start painting on porcelain or on canvas. Mrs Chau and Miss An are very talented teachers and are also eager to see what our talented students are capable of creating. I can’t wait to see it either. Advanced notice: some of these fine pieces of art will be sold at the Art Auction at the Family Fun Night. We will advertise them in the coming months.

Communication Strategy I have heard a few rumblings throughout our school community about early communication and as a result, we as a school have come up with a communication strategy, one that should cover all major platforms and with a few hints we can give you about social media and general communication, we hope that everyone will get the messages they need to get nice and early. We will now operate platforms through: *Facebook

Page 4: The - lidcombe-p.schools.nsw.gov.au

*Twitter *Our website *Team App (replacing School App) *LED Board *Sentral – Parent Portal (coming soon) One thing we cannot physically do for you all is refresh the pages you have been viewing. Notifications do not always come out in a timely manner, so please ensure you visit these sites regularly and refresh the pages – don’t rely on notifications being sent to you on time. Make sure you see the “Communication Stratgey” page within this newsletter, with hints on how you can download these apps.

For our new Kindergarten parents….. Our new Kindergarten students have settled in well and have begun their great journey for learning in the primary years with great enthusiasm. Just a couple of reminders are below to help you make your child as successful as possible: *All students need to wear closed in shoes – no sandals or thongs ! *All students must be wearing a school hat outside as part of our Sun Safe policy. They are only $15 at our uniform shop. PLEASE make sure you label all hats with your child’s name. *It is summer at the moment, so jumpers are probably not a wise thing to dress your children in. Put the jumper in your child’s bag if you are worried. *We have a program called “Crunch and Sip” happening at 10am in the classrooms. Your child needs a small portion of fruit (bite-sized) and water to drink every day for this activity. Please see further information regards Crunch and Sip in this newsletter. *Please ensure that you pack an appropriate amount of lunch to eat each day. We have witnessed some Kindergarten students take almost the whole of their lunch break to consume what they have for lunch. Play time is important too.

Platinum Awards Being Green suggests that your child is behaving very well and is doing what our teachers expect of them in the classroom and the playground. These awards in its current format have been running for almost 3 years now and over the last couple of weeks we added 2 new people to our list so far this year. Week 5 recipients were Yan Han (S3F). Week 6: There were no recipients this week. Congratulations Han!

Newsletter All newsletters are emailed to our families each fortnight. Electronic distribution is a much better method of communication with families as it allows the school community to enjoy great images of students in full colour without the environmental impact of substantial paper usage.

How much activity do our

children need:

Kids and teens should get at least

60 minutes of moderate to

vigorous physical activity every

day. They can get even more

health benefits from doing a

couple of hours of physical

activity every day.

To help kids and teens be active

every day, they need

opportunities for sport, play and

exercise at school, after school

and on weekends.

Physical activity doesn’t all have

to happen at the one time. It can

be accumulated throughout the

day; by walking or riding to and

from school, being involved in

activities at school, active play at

home or taking part in organised

sport after school and on

weekends.

Kids and teens can get even more

benefits from doing up to three

hours of physcial activity every

day.

Kids and teens should do

strenghtening activities at least

three days of the

week. Strengthening activities,

such as climbing, jumping,

running or playing tug-o-war, help

to build muscle and strong bones.

HEALTHY LUNCHBOXES

Did you know? . Around 1 in 5 young people in NSW report eating potato crisps or other salty snacks at least 4 times per week. . Over a quarter of young people in NSW eat confectionary at least 4 times per week. Healthy snacks help kids and teens refuel Healthy snacks in between main meals help kids and teens meet their daily nutritional needs. Young children have smaller stomachs than adults, so they need to eat every few hours to keep up their energy levels and get the right amount of nutrients. Teens get particularly hungry during periods of fast development and snacks are important. Snacks based on fruit and vegies, reduced fat dairy products and whole grains are the healthiest choices. It is important to limit snacks that are high in sugar, salt or saturated fats – such as chips, cakes and chocolate – which can cause children to put on excess weight. These ‘extra foods’ should only be offered occasionally.
