PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

NAPLAN – National Testing Program – Literacy and Numeracy Last Friday marked an end to the NAPLAN testing week, and what a busy week it was. It is also the 7th year that literacy and numeracy national assessments have taken place across the country for students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9.

Students at Lidcombe PS took to this testing in a very sensible and calm way, especially our year 3 students who took part in a formal assessment for the very first time. When students were asked about their opinion of the assessments, the responses varied from “easy” to “challenging”. Parents will receive the results of these tests for individual students in approximately two months. The results will also assist our classroom teachers and the school in looking at both individual

and overall student performance. Congratulations to all year 3 and 5 students for tackling these tests with enthusiasm and a big smile on their face. Thank you to the P&C for providing fresh fruit each morning so the students could start the day with Crunch and Sip and then focus on the tests. An excellent idea!

P&C Meeting The next P&C meeting will be held on Monday 17 June at 7pm in the new staffroom, in our new office. It was due on Monday 11 June but that will be the Queen’s Birthday holiday. We will have a quick tour of the facilities before our meeting gets started.

Immunisation A review of our system has revealed an alarming amount of students with incomplete details regards their immunisation. Usually, it is something we discuss at the Kindergarten enrolment stage and it is something that parents usually forget to bring along to those interviews, and then forget to bring it in at all, despite being reminded to do so. To complete these details, could you please provide us with a copy of your child’s immunisation record if you receive a note to say it’s missing from your child’s records. If your child isn’t immunised, that’s not a problem, but we need to know this as well, particularly if there is an outbreak of chicken pox or measles etc.

Premier’s Sporting Challenge The Challenge includes a range of initiatives with one common purpose - to have more students, more active, more of the time! The Premier's Sporting Challenge aims to engage young people in sport and physical activity and encourages them to lead healthy, active lifestyles. Sport plays an important role in developing regular physical activity, provides positive health outcomes and is a fun and healthy way to connect with your local community. We invite students to take up the Challenge - and take the path to a healthier life. Students can strive for the Bronze Award (210 minutes a week or 30 minutes a day), Silver Award (315 minutes a week or 45 minutes a day), Gold Award (420 minutes a week or 60 minutes a day) and Diamond Award (560 minutes a week or 80 minutes a day). Students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 only have to colour in a picture to register that they had been physically active for the day. For our school, we will start to collect how many minutes we have been active for (inside and outside of school) in Week 6 of this term. We hope to replicate the success of last year by attaining a DIAMOND AWARD again. Even the

staff will be participating in the staff challenge – we will let you know the details of our end of year event very soon! (More details later). Get out there boys and girls and get active!

School Athletics Carnival – Monday 24 June Keep this date in your diaries as it is coming up soon. This is one of my favourite days in the school calendar, as we will have every student in attendance down at the track being physically active and we always have plenty of community support on the day as well, which makes it a very special event. Miss Davies, Mr Gan and Miss L Nguyen are our organisers this year and will no doubt have a well planned event in store for us on the 24th June. If you can assist in any way, let the above teachers know that you are available.

Auburn Zone Cross Country success ! Our Zone Cross Country team of 48 performed outstandingly well at the Auburn Zone Cross Country carnival, with our school finishing 1st out of the 12 schools, the 8th year in a row we have achieved this ! 11 representatives from our school will progress to the Sydney West PSSA Cross Country championships, held out at Eastern Creek raceway on Wednesday 12 June. They are: *Talia Bas (finished 3rd 8/9 girls at Auburn Zone) *Isaac Issa (3rd 8/9 year boys) *Aryan Singh (1st 10 year boys) *Mohamad Dib (3rd 10 year old boys) *Timoci Kagi (8th 10 year old boys) *Souad Kalassina (2nd 11 year old girls) *Anita Chay (3rd 11 year old girls) *Carvelina Phin (8th 11 year old girls) *Selina Lin (7th 12/13 year old girls) *Hamza Kilic (5th 12/13 year old boys) *Amir Kanj (7th 12/13 year old boys) Hatice Caybas finished 9th in the 12/13 year old girls and Mya Kowaider finished 10th in the 10 year old girls and they are first and second reserve for the next level. Well done to all of the boys and girls – our sporting programs just go from strength to strength.

Platinum Awards Being Green suggests that your child is behaving very well and is doing what our teachers expect of them in the classroom and the playground. These awards in its current format have been running for over 3 years now. There were no recipients of a Platinum Award over the last two weeks (week 3 & 4). Please get your awards in as soon as possible.

Just a reminder The earliest time students should arrive at school is 8.30am. Any earlier than this means that I can’t guarantee their safety as a teacher will not be on the playground to supervise students until 8.30am. Please ensure your children arrive no earlier than 8.30am for their safety’s sake.

PSSA Sport Trials Just a quick to inform our parents that our process behind selecting PSSA teams, be it Summer or Winter is very rigorous. In Summer or Winter PSSA, we have 3 trials, where our students get to trial for 3 different sports of their choice. Their choices are recorded for follow up, but of course, we don’t force the students to attend each trial, in the end it is their decision to participate or not. Usually, two out of these three trails are during class time, so I think I’m being generous by donating some of our learning time to this process. Our Junior teams are essentially under 10’s teams, meaning anyone turning 8, 9 or 10 years old have the chance to participate in the junior competition (Seniors are for 11 and 12 year olds). This means that a lot of year 5 children have the opportunity to play in the Juniors as they turn 10 this year. Couple that with the fact that we have some exceptionally talented sports people at our school who apart from doing well in school based competitions, excel outside of school as well. When we are talking school based competitions, our results speak volumes for our selection processes – 8 teams crowned premiers, zone swimming and zone cross country champions 8 years in a row, zone athletics champions 7 years in a row (that carnival to come). Sometimes, what our children need more than anything else is a bit of training in resilience – “it didn’t work out for you this year, work hard to see if it can become a reality next year” – rather than ringing up to complain. My teachers take the process very seriously, they are the utmost professionals when it comes to this and everything else we do here. Please consider this before you ring to complain.

Great work / results by students At the end of this week, Mr Duffy will be reading the story “Alpacas with Maracas” for National Simultaneous Storytime, but for the last couple of weeks, students have been responding creatively to the story with different activities. I was blown away when Tyler, Diana and Tania showed me their creative maracas they had made in class 3 Tamarama. I think you can clearly see each child’s personality in their maracas – bright, bubbly and colourful. Well done students !

Meanwhile, over the last two, Aryan Singh has been exploding all over the world ! Apart from his outstanding zone cross country win in the 10 year old boys race, Aryan has been to Abu Dhabi to participate in the World Championships for Jiu Jitsu – where Aryan participated in his competitions but did not qualify for the finals. He met the eventual world champion from Syria in the early rounds but fell short of points. He has also asked his dad to take him again next year!!! – and

then to Queensland for the Australian Championships, where he won gold in Gi and No Gi, participating in 6 matches (3 in each division) undefeated to win the titles, and then to the ACT for the ACT Championships, where after a tough match, Aryan placed second, receiving the silver medal. What a star you are Aryan !!!!

Newsletter If parents wish to have the newsletter emailed to them directly please fill out the form below. Electronic distribution is a much better method of communication with families as it allows the school community to enjoy great images of students in full colour without the environmental impact of substantial paper usage. We hope many of our families take up this option in the future. Thank you for taking up this option and saving just that little bit more of our environment.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST NEWSLETTER

I would like to have the newsletter emailed to me each fortnight. Name of Child: ____________________ Class: ______________ Name of Parents: ___________________ Email address:-__________________________ Please hand in to Mrs Rush in the office as soon as possible.

Principal

Did you know???

For the safety of all students, toddlers, babies and adults, please do not bring dogs into the school grounds, even on leashes. Some children have a genuine fear and it can be quite distressing for them as well as for parents, particularly those with very young children. Thank you for your support in this matter.

Under the Companion Animals Act

1998 No 87 (14.1.e), dogs are

prohibited in school grounds,

(whether or not they are leashed

or otherwise controlled).
