PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

New Office Building Unfortunately, after copious meetings in Week 1 and with a number of changes to be made, we didn’t move into our new Office building on Monday 6 May. Whilst disappointing, the builders (Hutchinson’s), School Infrastructure NSW and our school all want

the perfect product once all the works are finished. We have been given an approximate period to move in, which was two weeks (one week left to go), but I will let you know when things are progressing towards the eventual move.

Multicultural Public Speaking finals – Stage 3 It was indeed an honour to judge alongside Mr Duffy and Mrs Matthews on Wednesday 1 May for the Stage 3 Multicultural Public Speaking finals. Honestly, it was the best final I have seen since I have been at Lidcombe PS, in fact, it is the best public speaking final I have ever witnessed in a school I was a part of – each speech was absolutely stunning, well written, struck emotional chords and very well presented. It is certainly something our students perform exceptionally well in. We had two outstanding speeches we couldn’t split in the end for Stage 3, with our girls school captain, Shalona Archaya and boys prefect Jackson Rennie, who both blew away everyone present with outstanding speeches that would put most adults to shame! Both students should do incredibly well at the next level. The other speeches were also of an unbelievable standard. It was so close, that the other 12 candidates finished within 6 points of each other, as far as my scoring was concerned. Only two can go through, but it worth mentioning Zara Zanic’s and Stephani Chow’s speeches as they were of an incredibly high standard as well. Well done to both Shalona and Jackson, you will be outstanding representatives at the District Multicultural Public Speaking finals, to be held at our school on Thursday 20 June.

Panels / Vacancies Staffing have been in touch and 4 positions need to be filled asap. With staffing these days, I have the choice of how to fill a position for every second vacancy, not a choice in that “I want this person to be hired” – it must fall within the guidelines of staffing, eg. Graduate appointment, closed merit panel etc. Of these 4 positions, I will have a choice for two of them to be filled via closed merit selection via the one advertisement, for which I will need a P&C representative and an NESB representative from our parent community. It doesn’t matter if you are not trained as you will be able to do an online 40 minute training course before we start. Why closed merit panel? Only teachers that want to be employed at this school or within this area who have the codes we want as a school to match, will receive an invitation to apply for the job and they have 2 days to respond. The other two positions will be filled by the Recruitment Department’s choice, hopefully they will be new targeted graduates.

At the P&C meeting next Tuesday, and at the Staff meeting Wednesday, I will request nominees to sit on this panel.

Stage 3 Project – Dark Skies Stage 3 teachers, particularly Miss An, have been working very hard on their next Project Based Learning activity, Dark Skies. This is a very interesting topic indeed, which has already sparked interest on Twitter amongst people outside of the Education sphere. Don’t hesitate to ask your Stage 3 children what it is all about and have your children impart some learning for you.

Behaviour – anywhere! It is no secret that we have the best behaved students in the district, possibly far beyond this as well. This message is just a reminder for everyone in our community and a very small minority of students, that your children’s behaviour everywhere helps people form an opinion of the school they belong to. For example, if they are walking home from school or going home via the bus, they still have their school uniform on and their behaviour is on show. I would rather hear great stories of helpful and polite students, not stories of students misbehaving. The same could be said for your child’s behaviour at PSSA sport, other representative sport, at before or after school care, on excursions etc. A great school name is built over many years of hard work and discipline, yet it can all come crumbling down in a matter of days. Please encourage your children to be their absolute best no matter where they are.

NAPLAN – National Testing Program – Literacy and Numeracy

The National Testing program (NAPLAN) will start on Tuesday 14 May. On the Tuesday, Year 3 (Stage 2) and Year 5 (Stage 3) students will complete tests in Language Conventions and Writing, on Wednesday 15 May they will complete a test on Reading and on Thursday 16 May they will complete a test on Mathematics. There is also a catch up day on Friday 17 May 2019. We will not be completing these tests online, we will be doing the paper and pencil version, meaning our NAPLAN week is one week, not two.

The test assesses your child’s ability to handle mostly basic tasks. There will be questions within the test that will be harder in nature than others, but certainly it is a situation which no student should be stressing about. If I can ask you as parents to make sure your child is not stressed by the situation, that operations at home continue as normal, that he/she has a good night’s sleep and a good breakfast in the morning. A big thank you to our P&C who will be providing some fruit for year 3 and 5 students before they start their tests.

Page 3: The - Lidcombe Public School · Warm Up Arena, Homebush PRINCIPAL’S REPORT New Office Building Unfortunately, after copious meetings in Week 1 and ... with our girls school captain,

We have every confidence that the students will do well and we will, of course, minimise disruptions during these tests. If you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact myself, Mrs. Pant (Stage 3) or Mr. Windle (Stage 2).

Medical Issues As a reminder, we have a few children who have an extreme allergic reaction (which can be life threatening) to peanuts and other nuts. This means that this child cannot come into contact with other people who have eaten nut products (eg. Nutella, peanut butter, any types of nuts or any foods that contain nuts or nut products). I realise that the school can never really be nut free, but I’m sure that all parents can be very vigilant about this problem and not send their children to school with anything that contains nuts, including home made birthday cakes etc. This way, we will become nut-aware. It is a challenge for us at school as well as our community, but I am confident that everyone will pull together to make our school a safe place for every child. As a rule anyway, if your child does present as ill before they come to school, it is better that you keep them at home, so as not to spread the disease throughout the school. We respectfully request that all children and parents of Lidcombe PS follow these guidelines over 2019 and beyond. If you have any enquiries regarding this, please contact me at the school office. Whilst on the subject of medical issues, if your child(ren) have contracted a virus or sickness of some sort (eg. measles, chicken pox, mumps etc), the office needs to know straight away. We have a child in the maintenance phase of cancer treatment, meaning this child’s immune system is at a very low level where illnesses like this could have a major effect. Please ensure you let us know straight away !!!

P&C Meeting Our first three P&C meetings have been very well attended with around 15-20 parents coming, although I wasn’t at the last meeting, celebrating my 24th wedding anniversary with my wonderful wife. I must say it is a delight going to P&C Meetings, as they are very productive and have a friendly atmosphere - I really enjoy speaking to all of the parents before and after the meeting. Our next meeting is next Tuesday 14 May at 9.15am in Lidbury Hall, not our new staffroom as previously advertised.

Mobile Phones While it is accepted that mobile phones play an important part in modern life and communications, it is important that all staff, students and parents accept that their use during class time and on various other occasions at school is inappropriate.

If mobile phones are to be brought to school by students, they need to be left at the office during school time and picked after school at 3pm. Parents and carers must give written permission for students to bring mobile phones to school. The school will not accept any responsibility for a mobile phone being lost or damaged.

Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Student Survey In Term 1 and Term 3 our students in Years 4, 5 and 6 will again take part in the TTFM student survey. We are always looking to further improve the school so we seriously consider the collated responses in our future planning. The individual student responses remain confidential and are not seen by any staff. More information about the survey can be found at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/images/FAQs/TTFM_Student_Survey_FAQs_Parent_and_Carers_T12019e.pdf You are also most welcome to speak with Mr Duffy. There is a non-permission note included at the back of this newsletter that must be completed if you do not want your children to participate. This note is also written in other languages at http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

Fruit Breaks – Crunch and Sip Like last year, our staff decided they would follow the new program “Crunch and Sip” in their classrooms, to improve the way our students think at crucial periods during our school day.

As our morning session is 2 hours long, and physically, some children have not eaten for 4 hours between breakfast and recess, we are now asking that you provide a small portion of fruit (you determine the size depending on the age of your child(ren)), so they can spend 2 minutes at around 10am having a quick bite of something healthy to recharge them for the rest of the morning. Also we are encouraging the use of a water bottle filled with chilled water only, to sip on at this time. The rules are, however, that it must be a small piece of fruit and water only to take advantage of this break. If you would like more information about this program, see Mr. Lewis, Mrs Rush or visit www.crunchandsip.com.au. I am sure that this will lead to even more success in the classrooms.

Opportunity Class (OC) Applications Parents with children seeking placement in an opportunity class in Year 5 in 2020 are required to submit an application form ONLINE which will open on Tuesday 30 April 2019, and will close on Friday 17 May 2019. Generally students are in Year 4 in 2019 when applying for Year 5 entry in 2020.

Parents seeking opportunity class placement for students in 2020 will be able to apply for up to two schools of their choice. It is expected that parents will make appropriate decisions when choosing a school. Parents are strongly encouraged to give careful consideration to the time taken and modes of transport involved when choosing a school with an opportunity class. The OC test itself will be conducted on Wednesday 31 July 2019 (Term 3).

To apply online (after 30 April), use this link: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5

Platinum Awards Being Green suggests that your child is behaving very well and is doing what our teachers expect of them in the classroom and the playground. Our latest recipients were:- Week 2 – Selina Lin (6Q), Lowell Lee (4L), George Magnus (5K) and Hosea-Rupe Teariki (3/4B). What a great start to the year students!

Toilets The toilets at the end of our school buildings are for the use of the students only. If you are on site and are in desperate need to go to the toilet, please go to the office and use the toilets there. As I’m sure you can appreciate, having adults and school students access the student toilets (someone even used the inside Kindergarten toilets !) at the same time can create a child protection issue. There are signs on our toilets saying “No Parents allowed” – please do not use them – it is a Child Protection Issue !

Gifted and Talented class – Arthur Phillip HS We have just received information that any student(s) currently enrolled in primary school in Yr6 can apply for Arthur Phillip High School's Gifted and Talented Class starting 2020. If you are interested, please see Mrs Pant, she will pass on an application which will need to be completed. Completed applications need to be returned by Wednesday 15th May, 2019 - they can be returned by email. If you have any queries, don’t hesitate to see Mrs. Pant or myself. Mary Coupland is the contact at Arthur Phillip HS and she can be reached by phone (02)9635 6363 or email: [email protected]

Just a reminder The earliest time students should arrive at school is 8.30am. Any earlier than this means that I can’t guarantee their safety as a teacher will not be on the playground to supervise students until 8.30am. Please ensure your children arrive no earlier than 8.30am for their safety’s sake.

Other schools….. Far be it from me to tell parents where to send their children to school, but considering a new school of only a few students over what we have built up here at Lidcombe PS with all of our opportunities, focus on future learning, creative and critical thinking……it just doesn’t make sense at all. Please keep in mind that if you decide to go to a new school and you live outside of our drawing area (ie. Non-local), you may not get a place here when you return due to our numbers.

SWPSSA 11 Years Rugby League Championships Report The day of the Sydney West PSSA Rugby League was a nerve racking day. I was trying to make the Sydney West PSSA squad. Along with lots of boys from all around our region. We had to face different Zones like The Ridges, Penrith, Mt Druitt and St Marys, with Mt Druitt being the hardest team. We made it into the semi finals against Mt Druitt, but unfortunately we lost, by a lot, but we tried our best. After our semi, Mt Druitt played Penrith (we beat Penrith, so I have no idea how they made the final), and Penrith won ! Then they announced the players to go through to the Sydney West squad, and Billy and I (Leo) were announced in the squad. We had to attend a development camp in the holidays and then they announced the final side and again, Billy and I (Leo) made the final team. My family was so proud. The students from our school were:- Billy, Jireh and Leo. By Leo Farr

SWPSSA AFL Championships Report The AFL day was fun, participating as Auburn PSSA. We had a good team and coach, but it was a tough day as the opposition was really good. We played hard but unfortunately, we didn’t make the semi finals. The whole team had fun throughout the day and we were all proud to represent Lidcombe PS. The students from our school were:- Leo, Billy, Hafez and Ned. By Ned Reside

SWPSSA Opens Rugby League Championships Report On the day of the Sydney West PSSA Rugby League tournament, I had a blast ! Our team (Auburn / Merrylands / Parramatta) came 2nd overall and lost the final because of a golden try to Mt Druitt in extra time. In the round games, we had to beat Mt Druitt to make the semis, which we did 12-6, but they just edged us out in the final. I (Brooklyn) scored the first try. Altogether, I enjoyed the carnival and couldn’t have been happier. The students from our school were:- Billy, Leo, Xavier, Elizabeth and Brooklyn. We also had Junior Farr (Leo’s dad) and Bill Soliola (Elizabeth’s dad) be our trainers for the day and they were great ! By Brooklyn Read

SWPSSA Netball Championships Report On the second of May, Lily Ivanac, Elizabeth Soliola, Evangelina Fusi, Kayleila Raukete and myself participated in the Auburn Zone Netball competition. This prestigious competition was fierce, however, my team never put our heads down and gave all 11 games our best. For me, the best part of the day was playing with my friends and enjoying the games. I left the stadium with no regrets , a smile on my lips and an experience I would cherish for a lifetime. By Shalona The umpire pictured with our students is former student Monalisa Soliola.

Newsletter All newsletters are now emailed to parents directly. Electronic distribution is a much better method of communication with families as it allows the school community to enjoy great images of students in full colour without the environmental impact of substantial paper usage. It is very important that you keep the office updated with your latest email address to ensure that you receive the newsletter regularly.

Students MUST NOT arrive at school before 8:30 am and must leave promptly at 3:00 pm Parents are reminded that school supervision exists between 8:30 am and 3:00 pm. A Before and After School Care facility is provided on the school site for parents needing child minding. Contact 0401680686 after school hours for further details.

Leaving students unsupervised on school grounds has legal implications for both the school and parents.

Access to the school is only possible via the pedestrian gate near the sandpit (Mills Street) during school hours. All visitors must report to the school office. Unauthorised persons on school premises are considered to be trespassing and will be reported to the police.

Did you know???

For the safety of all students, toddlers, babies and adults, please do not bring dogs into the school grounds, even on leashes. Some children have a genuine fear and it can be quite distressing for them as well as for parents, particularly those with very young children. Thank you for your support in this matter.
