FOREWORD

The reason of arranging and compiling this brief history of life of Hazrat Shaikh Makhdum Ali Paro’s rehmatullahi alaih is that when his honourable father Hazrat Maulana Shaikh Ahmad Paro’s rehmatullahi alaih residential quarter which later on was turned into a mausoleum after his death, situated at Ghas Bazar, Kalyan. Maharashtra was under dispute through a suit into the Kalyan High Court, that time, here was no record or any documents in English regarding Hazrat Shaikh Makhdum Ali Paro rehmatullahi alaih, or Hazrat Maulana Shaikh Ahmad Paro rehmatullahi alaih.

Consequently, the pleaders, the advocates and the Magistrate were unable to understand the very basis of the suit. Not only that was so but also, the Muslim advocates and the pleaders were not knowing Urdu language and that is why it was very difficult to present the case in its right perspective.

Moreover, today we find that most of the Muslim people have opted to get their children admitted to the English medium schools due to some kind of compulsion or the other.

The younger generation of today, is totally unaware of the life history of the renowned saint Hazrat Makhdum Ali Paro rehmatullahi alaih This very fact is the reason of venturing upon compiling a brief life sketch and his forefather’s brief history in English.

We have taken care and we have endeavoured to collect the subject matter through books, treatises, magazines and newspapers. And here it is that we are presenting this for your kind information.

A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF HISTORICAL CONDITIONS OF MAHIM

The Western territorial side of India. almost all of it is situated close to the sea.

In the era of Maha Bharat it was called by the name of Uprant and the Arab tourists named it. ‘Kunkun’ or Kum Kum. Bomaby and its suburbans are but a part of this very kun kun which later on was continued to be called Kokan. In ancient times, it consisted of seven different islands. Their names are as follows:

(1)Colaba .(2) Bambai , (3) Majgaon. (4) Parel. (5) Worli. (6) Sion, (7) M A H A I M

As regards to these islands, the most ancient reference can be obtained from the book of Ptolmey (which was printed in the year 150 A.D. who had given these islands the name of HEPTANESIA. These islands remained desolate and uninhabited for a long time. But, today. it is brewing with hustle and bustle to no limit.

The coins belonging to the era of Raja Krishnan (375 A.D. to 400 A.D.) which are found. reveal the fact that, in that age. Bombay and the territories around it had begun to be inhabited. Then it was the sixth century A.D. when the Mauryas got control over the North Kokan inclusive of the islands of Bombay. The Mauryas had made Elephanta (Purl) their capital. Afterwards. Kirti Vennari. The First (156 A.D. - 591 A.D.), of the Chalukia Dynasty invaded the whole of the Kokan territory.

In the year 810 A.D.. the Salhar Dynasty caine to its height in the North Kokan. Its twenty rulers, in succession, ruled over the North Kokan alongwith the islands of Bombay till 1260 AD. In their period Thana. Sanjan, Sopara, Kalyan, Bassein. Uran and Cheeval etcetera were the famous and commercial centres.

In the beginning, the Arab Traders came into contact with those territories where there were the sea-ports. In those days. it was the Southern India where there were more seaports than any other part of India. Then. these came into existence in Sindh, Gujrat and Baluchistan Provinces. To name the ports, it would be like this: In Madras ( The State-Province) Kolam. Milli, Malaibar, Ras Kuman. in Gujrat Thana. Khambayat Sopara, Chemboriya, in Sindh Vaibal. in Baluchistan Nezu etcetera. There were other islands like Sarandeep. Mal Deep that were like the sea-ports.

The Salhars had made their stay and were living. in these territories for centuries prior to the establishment of the rule of Muslims in India. The first of all the Arab tourist that came to India is Sulaiman, The Trader (235 Hijri). He has made description of the kings who ruled over the territories adjoining the coast of india, in his travelogue, in which the first name is of Raja Baihara, The name of his territory under his rule is ‘ Kum Kurn ( Kokan) which is situated along the sea-side.

The historian Bilazari describes that just near Bombay. there is Thana (which in Arabic is written ‘Tana’). This is the port that achieved the honour of stepping here by one of the Most Revered Companions of The Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam, in the year of fifteenth Hijri when Hazrat Urnar Farooq Radi Allahu anhu was the Caliph in Arabia. That is why, there were some such Muslims in this territory who claimed to have their decendence from the Companions of the Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam. In the Bombay Gazette, Volume Third, it is mentioned that the predecessors of Hazrat Makhdum Ali Faquih rehmatullahi alaih came to Mahim in about 252 Hijri i.e., 860 AD.

In 1312 A.D. Alauddin Khilji attacked the King of Devgiri, Shankar Deo and killed him. The killing of Shankar Deo was on the pretext that he had refused to be ready to give yearly revenue to the King of Delhi.

After Shankar Deo, Har Gopal was appointed in his place. He, too, resorted to faithlessness and ingratitude and, consequently, he was deprived of the crown and the throne by the King of Delhi. After the rebellion, treachery and consequently his exemplary end, in 1318 A.D. Sultan Qutbuddin Mubarak Shah I ordered his armies to annex Bombay (Mahim) to his kingdom and he declared Thana to be the central City of this territory. Thus Mahim was captured and controlled by the army of the king.

After the death of Muzaffar Shah, his grandson Ahmed Shah became the king in 813 Hijri. i.e., in 1410 A.D. He was the son of Tatar Khan. Tatar Khan had died when his father was alive. Ahmed shah paid his attention to fortify and strengthen the hounderies of his kingdom in order to keep them safe and protected against the attacks of other kings’ attack on them. and that is why he had to be engrossed in bloody battles many a time. in the peroid of Sultan Ahmad Shah, Malik Al Shirq was appointed the administrator of Mahim. His great achievement is an historical event.

He got the worth-agriculture land measured from a new start and he, thus, increased the revenue of the government.

Sultan Ahmad Shah ruled Gujrat for thirty two years. His reign was glorious. He formed rules, regulation and laws in consultation with his ministers. These rules and laws were the most important achievement of Sultan Ahmad Shah’s reign. in his reign Gujrat and its adjoining territories were the centre of arts and science. industry and skill, trade and agriculture and so on in each and every department of the civilization and culture. He held the scholars, the sufis and the men of art and perfection in great esteem and honoured them very much. it was the reign of Sultan Ahmad Shah in whose reign Hazrat Makhdmn Ali Faquih Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih wrote the ‘ Tafseer-e- Tabseerur Rchman’ which is of highest grade and masterpiece work. and he dedicated it to no other than the Sultan himself in his auspicious era from the land of Gujrat rose to fame such illustrious and worthy people whose beneficence and favour made India saturated. Sultan Ahmad Shah died in the year 846 Hijri and in accordance with the Christian era it was the year 1442.

After Sultan Ahmad Shah, the following kings rules Gujrat in succession :-

Muhammad Shah II - - 846 Hijri @ 1442 A.D.

Qubuddin Shah -855 “““ “ 1451 AD.

Mahmud Begda -863 ““ “ 1458 AD.

Muzaffar Halim -917 “ “ 1511 A.D.

Sikandar -932 ““ “ 1515 A.D.

Sultan Bahadur Shah

Mahim remained under the control of all these kings. As soon as Sultan Bahadur Shah died, the Portugese. were from a long time increasing and spreading their credibility and bold over the coastal places. took the chance and seized and brougbt the Western coastal territory under their control. The Fort of Mahim stands as the memoir to the kings of Gujrat. After having taken it under their control. they opened their administrative offices into this fort. And the ships arriving there from Salsette. Trombay,Kalyan and Bhiwandi paid their octroi here.

In 1661, the sister of the King of Portugal. namely Cathrine, was married to the prince of the King of England and the Island of Bombay was given as the dowry on behalf of the pñncess. And by a deed of will and acceptance. it was transferred into the property of the Government of Britain, ‘The British Government handed it over to the East India Company on the basis of contract. Then it came under the sway of Britain Fully.

Mahim was called MAHAIM in the period of the rule of the kings of Delhi and those of Gujrat One can find its name as Mahaim in the historical books as well as in other books in Arabic and

Persian languages. Mahim remained the centre of the attention of the kings. rajas and commanders of armies for centuries together. But its importance in the world of knowledge and art was established only when and from this land of auspicious nature, rose such a great scholars. theologians, philosophers and sufis (the saints) like that of Hazrat Makhdum Ali Faquih Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih . The connection of Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahairni rehmatullahi alaih caused this land to raise its dignity and glory to its highest peak. The governments and reigns of the kings and emperors came to an end and the legends of their battles and wars as well as their social activities and gatherings have turned into the outmoded ancient fictions. But those literary and spiritual impressions that have been left back by Hazrat Makhdum Ali Faquih Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih will last till the Day of Judgement. The people who have the sense of appreciation of the literature, knowledge and art will respect and rever it from the bottom of their hearts . And the people who are in search of the spiritualism will not spare and hesitate to offer the presents of their devotion to it.

THE AUSPICIOUS BIRTH

The era of Hazrat Makhdum Ali Faquih rehmatullahi alaih falls in between the eight century of Hijra(t). This period is called the golden period of Arts and Sciences. Writing and compiling of books, criticism and commentaries and intellectual culturization and other activities got fillip during this era. Rarely, its parallel can be got in the past centuries, before it. The unparallel religious leaders (Imams) of this era and the masters of arts and sciences were born during this era. And precious and rare books of commentaries of the Holy Quran, the Traditions, Theology. History and Philosophy were written in this period. This is the very era when Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq, the nephew of Ghayasuddin Tughlaq was throned in Delhi. The period of Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq is known in the history of India for the peace and progress and care taking of the subject. In his period of rule, in the fields of art and literature, a great progress was achieved. More attention was given to the theological knowledge and popularization of the Shariat, the Islamic Jurisprudence.

Mahaim. the village situated in the state of Maharashtra and which was in the State of Gujrat before that, has a unique place of pride, as per Bombay Gazette, that the fore-fathers of Hazrat Makhdum Ali rehmatullahi alaih, most probably arrived to Mahim. In those days. Mahim was called Mahaim. It was almost non-habitated and desolate land. There were no other inhabitants there except the local fishermen,. Hazrat Makhdum rehmatullahi alaih comes of a Nawait

Family. The historians are of the opinion that technically this family (tribe) was of Arab origin and it had migrated to India from Hijaz (In Saudi Arabia). These people came to India and they made the western coastal area of India their abode.

And these people got down near about the mouth of the Indus River. and they made that territory their living place.

THE ORIGINALITY OF NAWAYAT

The word of Nawayat can be written with its last letters as ‘to’e’ or ‘te’ The ancient historians and the writers of biographies used to write it with both the letters.

Nawayat is a communit of the tribe, Quraish, who is related to The Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam through Nazr Bin Kanana. These were the residents of Madina Munawwara. They migrated to India during the periond of Hajjaj bin Yusuf and they got down on the coast of Indian Ocean.

ARRIVAL OF NAWAYAT IN INDIA

Having got fed up with the cruelties and tyrannies of Hajjaj Bin Yusuf. the first caravan of Muslim Arab Migrators took shelter in India on 8th Hijri that is in the year 699 A.D. There were, in this caravan, some Arab migrators of the village of Basra., which was called Nayat. Their family tree is connected to the tribe of Quraish through the family of Banu Nazar.

Against the courageous steps of Abdulla Bin Zubair Radi Allahu anhu, Abdul Malik Bin Marwan encouraged and incited Hajjaj Bin Yususf to killings, plunder and blood-shed. He made many a people of Banu Hashim prisoners and made them to suffer great hardships. Some of these people went to North Africa and Spain and one of the caravans of the migrators got down around the islands of Bombay. They got down at Sopara, Thana, Semore (Chambur). a sea-port at that time.

In the Bombay Gazette, it has been written about Hazrat Makhdum Ali Faquih Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih that: “This sufi (saint) was of Arab origin. His fore-fathers came to Mahim in the year 860 A.D. i.e. 252 H. as they were not able to stand against the tyrannies and cruelties of Hajjaj Bin Yusuf And after about five hundred years later Hazrat Makhdum Ali Faquih Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih was born.

• Note: Kashana-e- Sabiri- Peeran-e-Kalyar Sharif District Saharanpur. 5th Edition no.11, April 1963.

He, therefore. helped his son Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih to become. a scholar. In his childhood. under the training of his father, Maulana Shaikh Ahmed rehmatullahi Bin Ali rehmatullahi alaih , Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih acquired full fledged knowledge of recitation of’ the Qura’n with correct phonetics. theology, logic, philosophy, Hadith and all other extra-religious fields of knowledge and traditionlally reported sciences etcetera.

The gracious mother of Hazrat Makhdum, Hazrat Bibi Fatima rehmatullahi alaih, too, was a perfect saintly woman. The gracious parents of Hazrat Makhdum rehmatullahi alaih through their training. polished and illuminated the God-gifted talents of their son. And by the favour and bounty of Allah, He became a writer of Quranic exegesis of high quality, a scholar of Holy Prophet’s Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam Traditions, a theologian and a saint (Sufi) , excellent and well versed in revelation and miracles. It is widely known that Hazrat Khizr Alaih salaam , also, took a greater part in his training.

When Hazrat Makhdum rehmatullahi alaih’ was barely of nine years age. completed all the branches of knowledge. external as well as celestial and the Islamic Jurisprudence. Thereafter, only a few days had passed when, on the 25th of Jamadil Akhir 785 Hijri, his honoured father Maulana Shaikh Ahrnad rehmatullahi alaih Bin Ali breathed his last breath and left this material world for ever.

(In some other book, the year of the expiry of Maulana Shaikh Ahmad rehmatullahi alaih Bin Ali is given as 788 Hijri.)

Hazrat Makhdum’s revered father Maulana Shaikh Ahmad Bin Ali rehmatullahi alaih; who rose from the land of Kalyan, was buried in the very place of land. The auspicious grave of Hazrat Makhdum Ali’s rehmatullahi alaih honôurable and respected father is situated in the locality of Kalyan , namely Bombal Bazar*. Near Namak Bander (salt port) of Kalyan, there is an old graveyard and in it is situated a pucca Mausoleum, a shrine. of Maulana Shaikh Ahmad Ali rehmatullahi alaih which was built on 5th Rabiul Awwal, 1313 Hijri.

* His auspicious mausoleum is situated adjacent to the Bahir Kot (fort) Masjid (Mosque) and to the other side, there is the auspicious mausoleum of Hazrat Nizamuddin Khamosh rehmatullahi alaih.

Bombal Bazar, - Ghas Bazar :. On this vety same date, the fair (Urs) is celebrated every year regularly.

Some local poet has said two stanzas of poetry in Urdu depicting the date of his expiry. These are in Urdu and the poet is Rashid. They are inscribed on two marble plaques. One of them is inside the mausoleum while the other one is outside it.

The inside plaque bears these lines:

Janab-e- Shaikh Ahmad Wasil-e-Haq Jahan se jab huye jannat ko rukhsat Lisan-e-gaib-e- Rashid ne bataya Makeenul Khuld un ka sal-e- rukhsat

(788 II.)

When Hazrat Makhdum Ali rehmatullahi alaih became orphan due to the expiry of his father, his thirst for knowledge and learning went on increasing. There was no source to quench this thirst. hence he came to his respected mother and said, Dear Mother My longing for knowledge is going on increasing. Here, I don’t find any source to satisfy my desire and longing for it. If you give me permission then. I would set out in search of the knowledge. The respected mother looked at the son for some time and then said.’ My son! your separation is unbearable to me. Allah, The Highest, is The Causer of the Causes. He, being the real doer of things, will make such a provision from unknown that it will be the source of satisfaction to your longing. The knowledge that is obtained through the divine favour is better than that acquired by any method of teaching and learning.

So. the very night. his respectable mother prayed to Allah and her prayers were answered positively by Allah. As usual, after the early morning prayer was over, Hazrat Makhdum Ali rehmatullahi alaih, went for a walk to the sea-side. While he was strolling on the coast of the sea, he saw a radiant faced elderly person sitting on a rock which was lying on the coast of the sea. He conveyed his salam (the best wishes) to him. The elderly man returned his salams to Hazrat Makhdum Ali rehmatullahi alaih and showed his pleasure smilingly. Then, he said, ‘ You are longing for acquiring divine knowledge, then you come here to me daily every morning and I will teach you. The things you wish to obtain through journeys to distant places, Insha Allah (If allah so wishes), you will get the same here and here. I am the Khizr Alaih salaam. Allah, The highest, has sent me to teach you. Don’t divulge this secret to anybody.

So, he would go to that place where Khizr Alaih salam used to be sitting. It was his routine to do so every morning after the early morning (fajr) prayers were over. He was regular in this . And, thus, he started to acquire godly knowledge from Hazrat Khizr Alaih Salaam In a few days, he was perfect in both the types of knowledge, intellectual as well as aditional. One day, by chance,

his respectable mother made an enquiry with him. saying. “My son! To whom do you go to obtain knowledge daily? I have heard that you go to the sea-shore every day” . At first, he hesitated to give reply to his mother’s enquiry. But, feeling that it would be against the manner, he said, I go to Hazrat Khizr Alaih Salaam to learn from him.”

The next day, when, as usual, he went to the sea-shore, he found that Hazrat Khizr Alaih Salaam was not there. He regretted much and become very sorrowful and came to his mother. Hazrat Makhdum rehmatullahi alaih, with tears in his eyes said to his mother, ‘Dear Mother ! I had, against the instruction and warning of Hazrat Khizr Alaih Salaam, mentioned you the secret of his teaching. And, I think, most probably, being angry with me, he did not turn up today.” The glorious mother, again, consoled him and said, “Don’t be disapponted. Allah, The Higest, is The Most Powerful. He will send, again, Hazrat Khizr Alaih Salaam for the sake of you. “ The glorious mother prayed to Allah, that very night. Consequently, the next day, at the time of the prayers of Asr, Hazrat Khizr Alaih Salaam met him on the way and said, “ You have got the inspired- knowledge by the order of Allah.” Then he took him to the sea-shore and having taken out a morsel of godly bounty from his own mouth, fed it to him and said “Your glorious mother’s prayers are always answered positively and you have achieved mastery over all the branches of knowledge by the favour of Allah.” When he was free from the evening prayers, he found his pure and clean bosom overloaded with all the branches of the knowledge.

HIS HABITS AND GOOD QUALITIES

The real essence of life is the beauty of character. It is only the good character that has made the memory of the noble men perpetual and has strengthened their description Sayyid Ibrahim Madni, in his hook, Magazine Zamirul Insan says, “ Hazrat Makhdum Sahib was very modest, good mannered, obedient and fond of service to his parents from his childhood. By chance, one night his mother, after her night prayers, was lying on the bed. She felt thirsty. So, she asked Makhdum Ali rehmatullahi alaih to fetch her water. He return with the water but he saw that his mother was fast asleep. He thought that to awake her from the sleep would be against the good manners. So, he stood beside her with the glass of water in his hand for the whole night.

At last, it was early morning when his mother woke up from sleep. She asked him,’My son, how long are you standing here with the water? ‘.He said, “ Since the time you went to sleep and you had asked for the water. And I am, since then standing here waiting for you to wake up”

The mother liked this good mannerly behaviour of her son to such an extent that her happiness knew no bounds. She got up from the bed immediately, performed ablution and prayed to Allah for the betterment of her son. It was the effect of these prayers of his mother that due to it Makhdum Sahib rehmatullahi alaih very soon attained the perfection in both the types of sciences of knowledge, apparent as well as latent.

While describing the noble character of Hazrat Makhdum Ali Faquih Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih some of the people have written that he was very much generous and libral. He used to help the needy open-heartedly. Even though he was the son of a wealthy father, he never gave importance to the worldly ‘wealth and riches. There was a crowd of guests at his house all the time. On his table cloth various kinds of tasty foods were served and he felt happy to feed the

guests to their satisfaction. It is said that he liked fish very much. All the Muslims and the Hindus, both were attracted by his pleasing character and good behaviour.

DEVOTION AND MYSTIC EXERCISE

Hazrat Makhdum Ali rehmatullahi alaih was a genuine abstinent, devotee, master of the knowledge of all the branches of sciences in respect of Islamic Jurisprudence and intimate knowledge of God and measure” and regulations, both apparent and the latent. He had reached to the zenith in the intellectual sciences and conventional as well. He had the best qualities and pleasing habits and excellent characteristics. He performed extra-ordinay feats.

Sufi (Saintly person) Shaikh Abdul Wahab Muttaqui Shazli Qadiri, describes, in his book, a strange event concerning Hazrat Makhdum Ali rehmatullahi alaih

“ The author of ‘ Tafsir-e-Rehmani Hazrat Shaikh Ali Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih was overwhelmed with the effect of meditation and absorption. The ruling king’s sister was in matrimonial relation with him. One day , the king’s wives and their lady companions came to see the king’s sister at the Shaikh’s house. Shaikh, at that time, was sitting at the door of the house. The ladies hesitated to come in. Shaikh’s mother was present there. She said to them, ‘Why are you hesitant? Come on. What is the hesitation and reluctance for at all?’ They said that they were reluctant to come in because Shaikh was sitting on the door sill and he would see them. Shaikh’s mother said that it was not possible because he was in the unconcious state. He had no sense of any thing, neither theirs nor of this world and the hereafter as well. No sooner they heard this, all of them came in . Then they insisted on its proof. Thereupon, Shaikh’s mother came to him and said to him,’ My son take this wrapper and wear this on and give your dress for washing. At that shaikh was putting on clean clothes. He, immediately, put off his clothes and put on the wrapper. And, again he sat down. After an hour, his mother brought him other dirty clothes and asked him to take off his clothes. Shaikh took the same dirty clothes and put them on. He had no sense as to which clothes he should put on and which to put off.”

In one of the magazine, he has said;

“In Yeman, there lived a learned man by name Imam Jamal Muhammad One of the servants brought to me a letter from him. and he stated: It is a fact that Sharfuddin the Yemani the teacher of Quran has not the understanding and discerning power to such extent than he may be able to comprehend the works of Shaikh Mohiuddin Ibn Arabi rehmatullahi alaih Even then he belittles Shaikh rehmatullahi alaih only because he, himself is incapable and inefficient and he is bent on infidelity to the Shaikh rehmatullahi alaih and the followers of him rehmatullahi alaih.

Having heard this awkward and malicious statement, a thought occured to my mind that I must bring out what the truth is. And this thought didn’t allow me to sit at my house idle. Helplessly, I decided to make a journey and set out to Yeman. Having reached there, I forwarded the necessary arguments and gave perfect proofs and evidences. And, at last I succeeded in wiping out the dust of doubts and suspicion and cleansed the pollution of criticism and abuse from the beliefs of the teacher, Muallim.

REVELATIONS AND MIRACLES

Those elderly and saintly people who adopted the life style of their dear most Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam , in a very few days. they too start the experience of their being beloved and to this the promise is made by Allah in His Glorious book. The Qura’n that whosoever adopts the manners, the ways of life. the habits, the characteristics and the traditions of The Holy Prophet Muhammad Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam, he will be under the care of Allah.

In the words of the Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam. it is as:

“Tell them, if you love Allah, do follow me. Then Allah will be mindful of you.”

Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahairni rehmatullahi alaih., was one of the chief Awilyas (The saints). Many a miracle are attributed to him. Hence, many a people have written books on his miracles with title of Karamat-e-Makhdum (The Miracles of Makhdum) rehmatullahi alaih. Many of them are hearsays only and to establish their authenticity is difficult due to lack of documentary evidences Therefore. we. mention here only’ those of his miracles that are brought to light by the writer of the Magazine. ‘Zamirul insan’, Maulana Sayyid Ibrahim Madani and that too, with particular stress.

(1) It is natrated that Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih had reared a she-goat whom he loved immensely. Once when he had gone away on some business, the goat fell ill and ultimately died, His mother got the deid goat buried on the sea-shore. When he heard about the death of the goat, he became extremely sad and went to the sea-shore to see it. His maid-servant had followed him and he ordered her to go away. She got frightened and went away from that place, but hid herself at a little distance. After the departure of the servant he recited some prayer and he stood there for some time praying to Allah. The maid servant who was watching all this saw the legs of the animal moving. Afterwards, he held the ear of the goat and brought her back home. This was the first miraculous feat that he exhibited at the age of 10 and its report spread far and wide.

(2) This maid servant, since that day, made it a regular practice- to serve Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih Whenever she washed his clothes she would preserve the first wash of water and drank it This entitled her also to gain knowledge and miraculous powers by the Grace of Allah. One day a traveller came to the mosque in Mahim. Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih noticed him and sent food to him through this maid-servant. When the maid reached the mosque with the tray of food she found the traveller missing. Through her powers she traced the person to be praying in the Khana-e-Ka’aba. She reached Makka and served him and later returned to the mosque. Thus, his dependents and followers also performed miraculous feats.

(3) Once, as usual, the men of INSIGHT had assembled from far off place and a general meeting was organised. During the session, one of the pious men informed that there is a Lote tree in the land of Madina Munawwara whose fruit is very delicious and nice. On this Hazrat

Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih said, “This was the season of this fruit and requested him to get some of it from there. He replied in the affirmative and promised to present Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih that fruit, He himself was a perfect scholar and had mastered the special prayer (benediction) called “Tayyal Farasakh” which at once took him to Madina. When he reached the tree he saw that there was someone already up the tree. He decided not to climb up and requested the person upon the tree to shake one of the branches of the tree so that he may also pick up some fruits. The man on the tree plucked some fruits and dropped them on the ground and shook a branch as well. The sage picked up the fruit and returned to Mahim.

He presented the said fruit to Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih who ate some of it and appreciated its taste and then remarked that. the fruit was undoubtedly tasty but he had brought it without exerting any effort. On hearing this the said sage felt very much astonished and he thought that perhaps he was watched by Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih by his miraculous powers but the situation was completely different. Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih had personally reached there prior to him and had climbed the tree. The holy man also realised the same and begged pardon. He accepted the difference between them. Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih is the Qutb of Konkan (The Polar Star of Konkan). Afterwards, Hazrat Shaikh Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih removed some fruits from his pocket and distributed them among the people assembled there. All of them ate and relished them.

(4) During the days of Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih, the marine traffic had commenced and the ship started navigating to and fro. In those days a Hindu trader despatched his merchandise aboard a ship but the ship did not return. Seven years passed by and he virtually forgot about that ship. But whenever any accident of such nature occurred, he mourned about his loss regretfully. He met many learned people, religious activists, astrologers and sorcerers to inquire about the fate of his ship. All of them told him that, that ship had sunk along with his merchandise and general cargo. A disciple of Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih was also sitting there and he inquired of this fellow whether he had ever approached his Shaikh and told him if he had not, he should accompany him there and then and he assured him that he would certainly get satisfactory information about his ship. The man agreed and they reached Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih and narrated the entire incident. Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih told him to sit down and close his eyes. He did as directed and then Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih told him to open his eyes and then prophesied that his ship laden with his cargo and merchandise. would arrive back on the sea-shore on that very day in the evening.

The trader returned home and he was puzzled as to how the said ship that was lost seven years ago would suddenly appear from no where and that too on that very day. He reached the sea-shore before the onset of evening. He was restless. He saw a ship approaching the coast before the sunset. After half an hour the ship arrived and (he trader was amazed as it was his own ship.

He was beyond himself with joy. He developed utter faith in the miraculous power of Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih. The next day. he, along with his family members. came to Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih and cheerfully and willingly embraced Islam.

(5) Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih was famous as a trustworthy person. A man came to him and said that he was going alone on a journey and did not want to take some of his gems and diamonds along with him lest they be robbed. He requested Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih to keep them in his trust and that he would take them back on his return. At that time, Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih was standing close to a well and he agreed to help that man. As soon as that man placed those diamonds on his blessed hand, he dropped them into the well. The man, puzzled and perplexed, enquired how he would retrieve them? Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih told him that he would get them back whenever he wanted. But he was a hasty man and demanded his diamonds. Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih put his hand in the well and brought out a fistful of gems and told him to pick up his diamonds from amongst them. The man was astonished, ashamed and repented upon his mistake. Ultimately. Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih himself picked up his particular gems and handed them over to him and threw the remaining diamonds back in the well.

(6) Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih was a very rich and well-to-do person. His dining table served a variety of delicious food. His guest house was always full with his guests who were treated very kindly and generously and served with excellent food.

Hazrat Makhdum Baba’s rehmatullahi alaih supernatural powers and piety gained much publicity and acclaim. Once in the assembly of pious men his position came under discussion. It was said that he was a very generous person and liked nice and sumptuous food. It was said that he was a turn of Insight and piety and held a high position in awliya (bloved of Allah). One of the attendants said that such combination cannot be found and that religious accomplishments and worldly preferences never went together because to him the (derwish) mendicants always cherished simple food. A heated discussion followed this statement but that man was not satisfied and he perferred to observe the situation himself. So he set out to meet Hazrat Makhdum rehmatullahi alaih personally. He came to Mahim and Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih lovingly lodged him in his guest house. At the meal-time, the dining-table was set and that day fish was served specially. The man found him the way he had heard about him. Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih was performing the duties of the host very graciously and requested the guest to do full justice to the food served. He had personally joined him in partaking food. He insisted that his guest should taste every item of the menu. Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih finished his food earlier than the guest. He dropped the bones of the fish in the wash-basin whilst washing his hands. When the guest completed his meal and washed his hands in the wash-basin, he found to his amazement that, instead of the bones, the fishes were swimming in the basin. He was astonished, his question received a very fitting answer. So he very earnestly and humbly asked for his forgiveness. Hazrat Makhdum rehmatullahi alaih showed his wisdom and affection. He excused him and said that he never intended to show any trace of pride or superiority but just wanted to prove that Allah is Al-mighty and shows His kindness to the one whom He likes.

(7) Since Mahim is situated on the sea-shore, the ships have been arriving there from different countries. Certain foreigners stayed there in rented houses for some period of time. Incidentally, a young, handsome and rich Arab trader reached there and he settled there for a couple of days. Perchance, he passed by the house of a girl and happened to see her. That very moment he fell in love with her and he expressed his feelings that he would like to marry the girl if she was

unmarried. The people told him though the girl was unmarried she could not marry him because she had been engaged to the poor boy of Mahim.

The Arab trader said that the engagement could be broken and that he was prepared to bear the expenses.

Some people, that very day, approached the father of the girl who was already engaged with a (poor) boy.

They misled the father and made him agreeable to break the engagement of his daughter and to get her married to the Arab trader.

In order to break the engagement, a meeting of the community was called. When this news reached the Arab trader, he felt extremely delighted. But that very news aggrieved and saddened that poor boy. There was none who could console him. Nonetheless, Allah had destined something else. When the boy reached the mosque the next morning for prayers, he was spotted by the Great Faqih, Hazrat Makhdum Ali rehmatullahi alaih and every thing had become clear to him. He called the boy aside and told him to be patient and thankful to Allah. He added that a truthful person always attained tranquility and peace of mind. He further said that he would personally attend the meeting of the community and would see as to what could be done for him and by what means. This kind and favourable attitude of Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih gladdened the boy and He busied himself with his daily routine. The meeting was held on the fixed time. Hazrat also reached there and was received very warmly by the people and was made the President of that meeting. The deliberations started and the problem of.the Arab trader was raised and the agenda of the break-up of the engagement with that boy on the basis of his poverty was discussed. At this point Hazrat explained that riches and poverty were not specially assigned to certain people and that, that distinction was meaningless. Someone, prone to tell lies, said that the boy had the habit of drinking. Then Hazrat inquired whether anybody had seen him drinking or in the state of inebriation. If not that would not be considered as evidence in which case that matter could be condoned. This situation silenced everybody arid then he delivered his judgement and that was that both the poor boy and the rich Arab trader should go on the pilgrimage of Hajj. And anyone of them who returned earlier than the other should be allowed to marry the girl. All the people unanimously agreed with this suggestion. The Arab trader was particularly happy since he owned a personal sailing ship which he could handle the way he wanted. He felt that his poor rival will go by some ship after paying the fare and would not be able to return early as per his desire.

Within next couple of days the Arab set sails for the pilgrimage. When the poor boy heard about his departure, he felt very depressed and conveycd the news to Hazrat who comforted him and told him not to worry as Allah would make all the arrangements.

In the meantime, the months of Shawal and Zilqad passed by and the moon of the month of Zilhajj made its appearance. The 8th of the said month came and none could see any arrangement being made for the departure of the boy and he was always being seen in Mahim. On the morning of the 9th when the Hajj was to be performed, the boy reached the mosque and Hazrat told him not to go anywhere after the prayers and should wait for him there only. He did

as he was told and waited for Hazrat who ultimately came and proceeded with the boy towards the hoz of the masjid. Then they stood at the edge of the hoz and Hazrat told the boy close his eyes and not to open them till asked to do so. Then Hazrat held the hand of the boy and dived him into the hoz and after a few moments told the boy to open his eyes. When the boy opened his eyes, he found himself standing on the gate of the Khana-e-Ka’aba. Then Hazrat took out some money from his pocket and while giving it to the boy he said that he should purchase necessary provisions of the Hajj. He told him to meet the Arab trader who had lodged in a particular tent, that day. it-self. He was further told to meet Hazrat at that very spot after performing the Hajj and that he should keep the entire episode as well-guarded secret, The boy proceeded to do whatever he was asked to while thanking Allah. He was very happy as Allah had honoured him with the kindness of such an accomplished leader and monitor.

After wearing, Ihram he reached the plains of Arafat and searched the tent of the rich Arab trader and met him. Afterwards he performed the rites and rituals and other important duties pertaining to Hajj which he completed in two or three days and he reached Hateem on the 12th to meet Hazrat Makhdoom Baba rehmatullahi alaih. Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih again told him to close his eyes and after a short time they reached the masjid. Six months elapsed when the Arab trader returned to Mahim. The meeting of the community, as per the programme, was called again. Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih attended this meeting too. The Arab also came there. Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih asked him whether he had performed the Hajj on which he replied in the affirmative. He further asked him whether that boy had gone for Hajj and whether he had met the trader or whether he had seen him there. The trader replied that the boy had gone for Hajj and had met him in the plains of Arafat and that he had seen him performing the Hajj and all the relevant rites and rituals. Then Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih asked the traders whether that boy had returned to Mahirn earlier. They confirmed that he had certainly returned earlier. By the Grace of Allah this state of affairs consolidated the faith of the people that all that had happened was due to him and that it was his glance of favour that allowed the boy to win that contest. The Arab trader kept quiet and accepted his defeat. Finally that girl was married to that poor boy.

Apart from this, many other supernatural feats were exhibited by Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih.

Zauqui Shah Sahib writes as:

“He preferred a life of loneliness and obscurity for a considerable period of his life. But his knowledge and excellence, his extra ordinary feats, obvious as well as latent, his miracles and the supernatural events that were revealed by and through him, made the whole world attracted to him….”

REGULAR PRACTICES

The Generous and Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam has said:

“In the eyes of Allah, nothing is as lovely as a prayer to him”. So, then what can be said of its effect? To remember Allah, and describing and making mention of his name is called the Zikru-

Allah. Whosoever remembers him and thinks of him all the time, will never disobey his orders and commands, on the contrary he will ever think of his pleasure and agreement in all of his deeds.

Allah, The Highest, reminds us in his Glorious Qura’n as:

“You remember me, then I will remember you.”.

Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahaimi’s rehmatullahi alaih deeds and daily practices are not mentioned in any a book so correctly. But they are available to some extent through the writings in the “ Sharhe Sayyidul Istigfar” by which it seems that this particular prayer to Allah was one of the particular prayers and it is as : (The Translation) :

“My Allah, you, alone, are my Nourisher. There is no god worthy of worship except you. It is you that have given birth to me and I am your slave. I shall remain firm on my promises to you to my level best. I seek your shelter against my evil deeds and I do admit your favours upon me and I repent for my sins. You, please, forgive me because no one will be able to forgive the sins except you”

Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih had written a book, “Al Wajood Fi Sharh-e-Asmaul Ma’bud. He had written the analysis and the qualities of Allah’s self-related and qualitative names of allah. But, Alas! That book is not available to-day.

Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih in his Exegesis of The Holy Qura’n, has mentioned the mysteries and the realities of the Sura’ Fatiha more than any other one. To him Sura Fatiha is the key to the treasures of all the divine knowledge of the Quran. Unlimited number of names of theirs are mentioned in it. There is no other Sura to match it for the qualities of it. Recitation of it is equal to reciting of the whole Qura’n. In the many names that are given to it, it is, also, remembered by the names of Surat-ud-Dua, Surat-ul-Munajat, Suratul Shifa’a and Suratul Rukiya. The Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam has Said: “There is remedy for each and every disease in Sura Fatiha”. Once. The Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam recited it and blew it over a patient. The patient recovered his health at the very time. Makhdum Sahib rehmatullahi alaih used to advise to recite it.

Conveying best wishes that is the Durood is also a source of prosperity and recompensation. What more can be said as regards the excellence of Durood than this that Holy Prophet, the Messenger of Allah (Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam) has said : “Whosoever sends me the Durood for one time, Allah and His angels convey the Durood to him for ten times. And Allah, the Highest. wipes, off ten of his sins and his position is raised ten degrees aboye.” And Holy Prophet, the Messenger of Allah Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam has said this. also : ‘On the day of Judgement. a person who sends me Durood in abundance will be more close to mc than others’. ‘To recite Durood after every prayer makes the prayers more effective and acceptable.

Hazarat Makhdum Ali Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih has. in all of his works. laid much stress on reciting the Durood. In his own exegesis, too, after the end of each and every Sura, he has not forgotten to write down the Durood. It makes the inclination of his mind and heart quite obvious.

HIS DEATH

The Crowned King of the saintly world, the ever expansive ocean of the divine knowledge, the Master of the mysteries of Shariat, the expert in the Philosophy of Existence. The Sun of Kokan Hazrat Makhdum Ali Faquih Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih at the age of 59 years got resigned of his Akhir 835 H.. on Friday night accordingly in February 1431 A.D. got united to his real beloved. (Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun). And on Friday. when a quarter of day had passed over, he was laid in the grave in the graveyard of his relations. The chronogram of his death is represented by the term ‘Jannatul Firdaus’.

THE CHRONOGRAM OF HIS DEATFI IS ‘JANNATUL FIRDAUS

Hazrat Makhdum rehmatullahi alaih attained the sainthood (Walayat) in lieu of his glorious mother. And he served the religion to his best and wrote so many books and he left behind a treasure of his works to satisfy the thirst of the seekers of knowledge and literature. His glorious mother Hazrat Bibi Fatima (MAA SAAB) rehmatullahi alaih was very much grieved on his death. She was restless throughout and she was never at rest any time. At last, after his death only forty days has passed and she, too, left this world on 17th of Rajabul-Murajjab 835 Hijri. Her grave is situated at the left side of the grave of herdutiful son, Hazrat Makhdum rehmatullahi alaih. May Allah’s beneficence and favour be bestowed upon them and may Allah grant us with the right spirit to show our love to them in right way and may we be bestowed with their favours and good wishes. Ameen.

THE TOMB OF THE MAID-SERVANT:

The maid-servant of Huzur Makhdum rehmatullahi alaih who had obtained through his spiritual favours, the miracle of earthen medicine of which more description is to follow, remained alive many days, even after his and his mother’s death. More particulars of her life could not be made available than what we have written. By speculation, it seems that this maid has served Makhdum Ali rehmatullahi alaih in such a manner that she could have served him in his private life, too, because her tomb is also to the southern side. inside the court of the tomb. The date of her expiry could not be known due to the fact that there was a lack of historians in that period. If they were there, more details about Makhdum Sahib rehmatullahi alaih would have been obtained through this maid and the date of her death, too, would have come to the light.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE MAUSOLEUM

The construction of the mausoleum was taken place only after the death of Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih and after two and half centuries later on in 1085 H. the consctruction of the big dome took place It was 77 years after that the four domes and the courtyard were constructed in 1163 H.

The main characteristic of this building is this the viewer is not able to understand that any part of it has been constructed later on or it has been designed and worked out by some other architect than the original one. It seems that the whole building was constructed at one and the same time.

The Bombay Gazette, written in the British rule, has given a clear picture of its historical importance. Although. much more changes have taken place as regards the conditions of those days and the shape and size of the mausoleum and even the atmosphere is changed, even then. it increases our knowledge and information in respect of many things. It has been written in Bombay Gazette” that :-

In the memory of this Sufi (the Saint). just after his death, a mausoleum and a mosque were constructed. In the year 1674 AD., accordingly in 1085 H. the expansion and repairs of it were taken place. And in the year 1748 AD. accordingly in 1163 H. a verandah was constructed and got extended. Today, too, it is as it was in Mahim.

THE MEMOIR AND THE RELICS THE HAZRAT MAKHDUM MASJID:

Whichever be the masjid. it is worthy of respect and veneration. Moreover, the masjid that might have got constructed by a certain Wali ( a saint) of Allah. must be of great honour and importance. The Mosque or masjid which is very adjacent to the shrine of Makhdum rehmatullahi alaih is itself constructed by Hazrat Makhdum rehmatullahi alaih himself and wherein, for years together Hazrat Makhdum rehmatullahi alaih offered prayers to Allah and worshipped him and remained busy and engrossed in the deeds and activities that make one close to Allah. This mausoleum is a historical as well as religious memoir to the Muslims.

The articles used by the religious saintly people which were of more attachment to them are preserved as a present for receiving benediction from the followers, like the rosary, the prayer carpet, robe and the turban, the staff etctera. But Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih was more attached to reading and writing. He had mastery in the art of caligraphy, too. That is why, in his relics, there is a hand-written Qura’n,The Glorious, in the style of ‘Naskh’ an usual form of Arabic script which has been preserved into the shrine and it is opened for its sighting every year on 29th night of RamzanulMubarak and the people are happy and delighted to view it.

The death anniversary of Hazrat Makhdum Ali rehmatullahi alaih is celebrated every year on eighth of Jamadil Akhir at night, in the Auspicious mausoleum. The sandal traditions are carried on by the Dargah (mausoleum) Trust and the visits and the sittings and congregations of Milad Sharif are held. The court of the mausoleum is open throughout that night. Every month on eighth night the milad khwani is held.

THE SAINTLY SCHOOL OF THOUGHT

In India, many a saintly guides with the chain and succession to Qadiriya, Soharwardiya. Naqshbandiya, Chishtiya. Idrusia. Shutariya and Rifayia were born who, with their love, humanity, equality and impartiality and good manners inculcated the feelings and passions of sincerity and truthfulness and changed the life-style of their followers completely. We do not find the name of Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih attached to any of the above line of the saints. As a matter of fact, his whole life was dedicated to the philosophy and that is why the writers of the biographies have called him “Awaisi”. In the terminology of the Sufis (the saints), an Awaisi’ is called only to that person who receives the divine source of knowledge without the help of any guide or the saints. In this regard. some are of the opinion that whosoever

follows the tradition of the Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam by his words and deeds. is an Awaisi. Some say that whosoever is favoured and benefitted by Khizr Alaih salaam is an Awaisi, whereas some are of the opinion that any of the saintly people who has some say that whosoever has been graced with a formal penetration in concealment without the mediation of any body is an Awaisi. This last one was availed of by the most of the Companions of the Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam in the long past. In view of Shah Waliullah rehmatullahi alaih. Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahaimi’s rehmatullahi alaih place and position in respect of spiritualism can be judged by the writings of Hazrat Shah Waliullah Dehlawi rehmatullahi alaih which have been recorded with a title ‘Nur-e-Nabuwwat Ke Tabqat’ in his book ‘Khairul Kasser”. In his own writings, Shah Sahib has placed Makhdum Sahib in the group of elderly saints of Allah. He says,te In our opinion, there are four stages or grades of Messengerhood. The first one is that which by the estimation of their nature was awarded to the philosophers of their communities. The second group is of those who were impressed by the Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam so much that they developed the state of guidance to the people and they considered all the creatures under their guidance. The third grade is of those who followed the traditions and Shariat with utmost obedience such as are Hazrat Gausul Azam, Shaikh Soharwardy, Najmuddin Kari. Shaikh Bahual Haq, the parents of Shaikh Harwi. Makhdum Ali Mahaimi and Maulana Haji. rehmatullahi alaih

HAZRAT SHAIKH MAKHDUM ALI rehmatullahi alaih MAHAIM AND GREATER BOMBAY POLICE.

Bombay Police Officers and the constables are personally attached to Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih. But every year, apart from that , the Police Department, on the occasion of his death anniversary (Urs) shows their devotion to such a manner that it has set an example of its own not to match it by any other in the whole of India. In this way they express their attachment to such a great scholar and spiritual person. For that expression of their attachment to Makhdum Shah Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih, the Mahim Police Station Staff represents the whole Bombay Police Department In Mahim Police Station, there is a special room which is called Makhdum Baba Room. It was got built and constructed by an English Senior Inspector of Police at Mahim PoliceStation in the time of British Rule in India. In this particular room, are stored the relics of Makhdum Shah rehmatullahi alaih era,, such as Goods to be used for Sandal, flat dishes, bed sheets, shawls and some other things and articles. The roon is highlyadorned and given respect by the police men. They do not enter it with their shoes on. The Urs of Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih is held, generally, in the month of December. It lasts. for ten days. For that purpose the Police Department forms a. Urs Committee and, generally, the Senior Inspector of the Mahim Police Station is the Chairman of it. The whole arrangement of the Urs for ten days is in the hands of the Mahim Police Department. The Thirty Six Thousand or so police officers and the constables give their contribution willingly for the Sandal and other celebrations as regards the Dargah, the Shrine of Hazrat Makhdum Shah Baba rehmatullahi alaih.

The Qutb-e-Kokan (The Polar Star of Kokan) Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi’s rehmatullahi alaih Urs is celebrated for ten days. Every year, it is deemed inevitable the Greater Bombay Police is to present its Sandal before all others. The preparations go on before the Urs starts. The Mahim Police gets a new look with its cleaning and new painting of the Police Station. Adequate arrangement of lighting is done to befit this occasion. Mahim Police Station is the only one and the only police station all over India where, on behalf Bombay Police, such celebrations as recitation of the Holy Qura’n. Milad (Ode to the birth of the Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam), Gatherings for Salat and Salam and so on are held.

On the first day of the Urs, after the early morning prayers, the recitation of the Holy Quran is held in th room of the Senior Inspector of the Mahim Police Station. After it is over, the gathering of recitation of poetry in the praise of the Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam, conveying of best wishes to the Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam and his nativity (Milad Khwani) are celebrated in the courtyard of the Police Station of Mahim. After the Noon-time (Zohar) prayers are over, the procession of the police on behalf of the Police Station, starts. In all the ten days of the celebrations of the Urs, the musical programmes and singing are held in the courtyard of the Police Station of Mahirn.

A REPORT BY EX-DEPUTY COMMISSIONER OF BOMBAY POLICE DR. KAPSE

Any way, as to why the policemen and specially the Mumbai Police has got so much spiritual attachment, (the devotion) to Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih? In this respect there are different theories and traditional narrations made by different thoughts of people. But Dr. Kapse has endeavoured to find out the secret of this devotion of Bombay Policemen to Hazrat Makhdum Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih, in the light of historical documents and records. Dr. Kapse, being renowned in the police department as a researcher, has carried out a research on Mumbai City and the history of the Mumbai Police. And Mumbai has, in appreciation to entry into the Maharashtra Police as a sub-inspector of police, Dr. Kapse obtained, during his period of service, degrees of graduation, post graduation and doctorate. It is, really, very laudable. The research in the history of the police has remained his main field in his research activities. Some years back, he was a senior inspector at Mahim Police Station. At present, in the position of Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Kapse has thrown light on the above mentioned subject and has said as follows.

This fact has been established with the means of the archaeology department that the personality of Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih continued to be extra-ordinary and miraculous. Hazrat Makhdum Baba’s rehmatullahi alaih period is considered to be 1335 A.D. to 1360 A.D. and around it. In that time Bombay consisted of seven islands and a few hutments. There was no trace of police department in those days. Bombay was ruled by the King of Gujrat.

Today, the place where the Mahim Police Station is situated, there was the residential house of Makhdum Shah Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih

Through the records of the Archaeology Department, the fact is quite clear that Hazrat Makhdum Shah rehmatullahi alaih used to go to Makkah and Madina, during the night time to

fetch water for his mother and he used to return in the morning, whereas in those days a journey to Makkah and Madina would take months together.

Deputy commissioner, Dr. Kapse added that Mahim is situated at the sea-shore but there is a well near the shrine of which the water is sweet and worth drinking. This fact is not less than a miracle being a well of drinking water near the sea of salt water. The regular administration of the police department in Bombay came to be established in the year 1660 A.D. Whereas, the devotion of the Bombay police is a thing to be considered, there is a historical record, in this concern, of the British Period. There is given an event that throws light over this attachment of the Bombay Police to Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih. The details of it are as under.

In the very period of The Britishers, the smuggling started in Bombay City. There was no trace of smuggling as such in the world of crimes. No one knew what the smuggling is in those days. When the smuggling started in the city, the Britishers set up posts (chowkies) to prevent it and to watch the ports and the coast areas. And such a post ‘came into being in Mahim’s sea-side area.

Relating this event, Dr. Kapse said that, for the watch, the police men, too, were appointed. One night, there was a single policeman on his duty in his turn, he observed one ship anchoring at the sea-side in the middle of the night. It was a ship of the smugglers and they were readying themseves to get the smuggling goods emptied there.

The police constable challenged the smugglers and in turn they started pelting stones at him. in the meantime, the police constable saw on that sea-shore a bearded elderly man dressed in white clothes. The elderly man called out to the police constable and said, “Come on, come to me”. To save himself from that pelting of stones, the police constable reached the elderly man.

The smugglers continued their stone-pelting act but It was only from the distance of fifteen feet that the stones began to return and in spite of the stone going towards the constable, they started going back to the smugglers themselves. In this way, it is said that by arriving there in time, Hazrat Makhdum Baba rehmatullahi alaih saved the life of the police constable.

Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Kapse said that this event of the time of the British Rule in India, is still in record, even today, of the Archaeology Department. Any way, why and what for Dr. Kapse had the idea of carrying research on Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih and that too, by the means of the government records? Dr. Kapse explained it that it was the Police Commissioner, S. Rama Murthi who ordered him to file a report in the light of the Government records on Hazrat Mukhdum Shah Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih and he, himself was the Senior Inspector of the Mahaim Police Station.

Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Kapse describing the devotion of the police toMakhdum Shah Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih, in the light of the government records, said that there are so many incidents of revelations and miracles per taining to Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih in the government records of the Archaeology Department but there are so many other events related to the private and personal life of the so many officers and constables attached to

the Mumbai Police, concerning Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih and that is why the Mumbai Police honours and glorifies Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi rehmatullahi alaih and express their devotion to him. The policemen, very often, when they are in family troubles or in their occupational hazards, they go to the shrine of Baba Makhdum rehmatullahi alaih and make an ardent appeal to him to solve their difficulties and relieve them from the tension and to their surprise their appeals are answered positively and favourably, it is but a part of everybody’s personal belief and faith.

Moulana Abdul Hai has to say in his Yad-e-Ayyam’ that a man would come in a fit of religious frenzy by reading this exegesis like” Tabseerur Rehman”.

Generally, the people whose mother tongue is a particular language do not give any credit to those who have got their language other than of theirs. Even Ghalib and Iqbal are neglacted. Makhdum Ali rehmatullahi alaih is an exception to it. His name is included in the famous Arabic Encyclopedia namely’ Al Nunajjad” with the following reference:

“Al Mahaimi (Alauddin-Al Hindi). who was the disciple of Ibnul Arabi rehmatullahi alaih, migrated to India for fear of Al Hajjaj. He died in 1432 H. He is the author of’ Tabseerur Rehman’. an exegesis of the Holy Qur’an with symbols and maxims. It is preserved in Berlin, Germany.
