ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation

Introduction

For this final project we were asked to design a city. Using all the knowledge we have gain through the first project and some research online to help us make a great future city. Before we can start making a great city we must first research on the past , present and future cities, and learn what makes it so great and how we can improve or implement those great city ideas to our future city.

Through this project we would have to dig deep into what it takes to create a great city, it’s not just all about having a good design for the city, we would also require to know what is required for a city. For example are the needs of the people, the people and th. eir activities are the heart of a city. The arrangement of the building and structures are important too, knowing the relationship between all the buildings is greatly interrelated. By knowing the requirements also means what would be the problems to be expected from creating a city, such as having an overcrowding city would cause waste problems, health and pollution

What is a city ?

A center of population, commerce, and culture; a town of significant size and importance.

A city would likely to have housing areas, constructed infrastructure such as roads and plumbings, a city would also provide public services like electricity and garbage collection, coordinate commerce, provide recreational facilities like parks, stadiums and museums, and facilitate transports.

Ancient city:Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu was built during the reign of the Inca Empire in the 15th and 16th centuries. Abandoned about 100 years after construction. It sit on 7,970 ft above sea level on the eastern slope of the Andes.

Machu Picchu is one of the most famous archaeological sites, covers about 80,000 acres

Exquisitely carved stone architecture,

Massive and thorough construction techniques,

A deep

knowledge of the geological and environmental aspects of the site

Above all, an impressive addition to the landscape that surrounds it.

As we know Machu Picchu has been built beautifully, and I would like to implement the environmental aspect of the site to my city, besides that, even though I’m designing a future city doesn’t mean we have to lose our culture.

Present City:Tokyo City

Tokyo is the capital city of Japan and world’s best high-tech city.

Provides one of the fastest internet connections in Tokyo with speed of 2 GBPS.

City is also connected with major parts of the World through air, rail, ground transportation and sea.

modern house/flats, best roads infrastructure

Tokyo has also one of the fastest rail line as well as subway.

Something that amazed me from Tokyo city was how great their connectivity are, having great and easy transportation, I would try and have my city to have great connectivity too. Also having my city to have the latest technology, like Tokyo that’s why Tokyo is the best high-tech city currently.

Future City:Lilypad Floating City

Lilypad was designed for the Oceans 2008 conference to meet the four main environmental challenges as seen by the Organization of Economics Co-operation and Development (OECD): climate change, the lack of fresh water, biodiversity and health.

Lilypad is designed to meet the peoples needs including food, fresh drinking water, and even an extensive array of entertainment facilities. It is also designed to follow the natural migratory flows of the oceans remaining near the coastline at all times but traveling extensively north and south as guided by the Gulf Stream or Labrador currents. Lilypad will support a wide range of flora and fauna centered around a lagoon.

A network of streets and pathways flow outward from the lagoon, following the curvy petal structures blending in with the natural flow of the structure

The city is powered using some renewable energy including the common solar, wind, tidal energies, hydraulic and many more. It recyles its own carbon dioxide and waste materials, which also include the water purification system which utilizes aquaculture

and other advanced farming techniques to grow enough food for the residents.

Through all this research of the lilypad floating city, I would like to take the Environmentally approach that this city has and also try to make my city as sustainable as possible.

The Light

I decided ‘THE LIGHT’ to be the name of the X city because, during the darkest moments there always comes the light. What better name to name a city during a tragedy, to bring hope to the people living in this city. Beside that the shape of my city is an Anchor shape, why you might ask, it is because for some an anchor represents Hope, and anchors are also strong and stable as will be my city.

Through all the research of the past, present and future great cities, these are the few things that my city will provide great and easy transportation, a sustainable city, besides that an environmentally friendly city too.

Why I chose to build my city floating above water is because, our previous city has been destroyed and has flooded our place, and by using the best of a horrible situation we build a city above it.

The zoning area for my city.

All of the residential areas are all high rise buildings as it takes lesser space. If a Tsunami was to occur high rise buildings would be on of the safest place to be too. In my city I have also focused on alot just on the greenery and recreational area of the city. To bring nature closer to us and for the people to enjoy around lots of parks and just recreational stuff. As the people and their activities are the heart of the city.

Underwater train pathways

The Lights main tranporting way is the underwater train as it gets you all around the city quickly, it’s underwater and it is sustainble. It has a wave powered turbine to power it and since we are living in a city floating above water so we can use what has been given to us. Besides the under water train we also have the overhead bus that also goes round the cities. This bus goes above cars so it lessen the rate of traffic jams too.

My intention of the city is to design this city to provide easy and great transportation around, and with its sustainability and Eco-friendly lifestyle, would make it a place worth living for

Conclusion

Before designing a city you must first know the basic requirements of making a good city. Through all the research done in this project, I have a better understanding of what makes a great city and what is needed to design a city. Zoning areas, what buildings are a must in making a city is really important to making a great city.

I have learned that designing a city is not as simple as it seems as it requires a lot of research and all the small details do matter such as placements of buildings, the roads, transportation and many others. How to make the city more sustainable is also another thing we have to look at when designing a city.
