Edition #2—14th March 2019 ~ The Lighthouse ~ Bunbury Primary School Newsletter An Independent Public School Principal: Shane Doherty PO Box 1908, Bunbury, WA 6230 Ph: 97 212660 Fax: 97 911036 Email: [email protected] Respect Care Excellence Our Motto: Strive to Achieve DATES TO WATCH FOR Tuesday 19th March Constable Care PP Thursday 21st March Harmony Day Friday 22nd March Interschool Swim Carnival Saturday 23rd March Have Sum Fun Yr 5/6 Tuesday 26th March Yr 6 Young Writers Day Friday 29th March Rm 1 Assembly FROM THE PRINCIPALS DESK Dear Parents and Carers, Our term continues to march on and I can hardly believe that we are 6 weeks into it! To say it has been busy would be an understatement – and it just seems to get busier each year. I guess that it is the same for all of us. SCHOOL ARRIVAL TIME Most parents and carers would be aware that we ask children to arrive at school around 8:30 when classes open for the day. I would like to say that it is great to see the enthusiasm of many children that brings them to school at 8:00am or earlier – but somehow I do not think it is the call of their Maths and Language lessons that bring them so early. Children who arrive before 8:30am are not supervised adequately for me to be confident about their safety. Staff do not commence work until 8:30am, even though they are at school before this preparing for the day. Most of the early arrivers do go to the lunch area when they get here and know (remembering is another thing altogether) that they are not to play or use sports equipment. Parents who arrive early and wait with their child should also ensure that their child is not running around or using sport equipment as this serves to encourage other children to think it is okay for them to do the same. It would be appreciated if parents and carers would ensure that their children arrive at school around 8:30am and no earlier. AFTER SCHOOL SOCIALISATION I know that a number of parents/carers enjoy socialising after school for pseudo play dates and I think this is a wonderful facet of our school. However, I would again remind parents/carers, that the children should be in proximity to you and in line of sight – not running around the school. Many of the children who stay behind with parents and carers appear to believe that the 3:00pm bell wipes out all playground and school agreements and that anarchy should prevail. Alas, it does not and should not. Please keep an eye on your children and ensure they are show the appropriate responsibility, respect and care for the grounds and fixed play equipment. P&C CANTEEN You will recall that our canteen had reduced hours in term 4 whilst the canteen manager was on leave. It is now open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and the committee that supports Jo in managing the canteen are trying their best to find a reasonably healthy menu that the children will happily choose from and generate sufficient income to keep the canteen open. If you have any ideas about healthy food items the Canteen Committee are more than happy to hear them. Jo can help put you in touch with them. SOLAR MODEL CAR CHALLENGE Congratulations to Angus B, Carter, Elise and Izaac whose team took out second place this week in the Solar Car Challenge hosted by Newton Moore SHS. There was a fraction of a second between first and second with the team recording one of their best times. Both first and second will compete in the state championship in Perth later in the term. Thanks also go to Mrs Menschelyi and Mrs Taffe for supporting the children in building their model cars during lunch times and then having a race-off to find the two cars and their teams that would be entered in the comp. GIVE A DAMN—GIVE A CAN The Rotary Club of Bunbury Leschenault will again be holding their canned food drive for needy families and our school will continue our involvement with it. The appeal is held over May (start of term 2) and I would like to see our school make a big effort to help those in our community who are less fortunate. I am letting you know about it now in the hope that parents and carers might buy one extra can of food each time they do their shopping between now and May so that they can stock up their donation. This is an easy way for all of us to show that we care. HARMONY DAY Harmony day this year is on March 21 st and presents another opportunity to show that we care about other people within our community and that we value the ideas of living in peace and with mutual respect. Children are invited to wear costumes that reflect their culture or to wear something orange that reflects their desire to live in harmony with others. It is a small gesture that supports an important message. Regards, Shane

ANAPHYLAXIS – please avoid sending food to school that contains nuts as it puts a number of our children at serious risk.

FACTION SWIMMING CARNIVAL A really successful afternoon was had at our Faction Swim-ming Carnival this year. The children all participated well, tried their best for their faction in the swimming events and enjoyed the novelty events and relays at the end of the carnival. A huge thank you must be given to the wonderful parent help that we had this year – it made for a really well run afternoon – so thank you all! Your help is really appreciated! I would also like to mention the great job of the faction captains for their organisation and wonderful help on the day. The scores for the overall swimming carnival is as follows: 1st Panthers 166 2nd Eagles 129 3rd Lions 127 4th Dragons 101 The following students received Runner Up / Champion medal-lions for their success in the pool:

.INTERSCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL We have a team of around 25 children attending the interschool swimming carnival next Friday (22nd March) and I wish them well. I know that they will represent our school and themselves with a sense of responsibility, respectfulness and care whilst being their best. I wish them well and thank Mrs Whittaker for her work with them, along with Mrs Van Schalkwyk

ROOM 12 ASSEMBLY It was the 22nd of February 2019 and the blood was rushing to our

heads, our hearts were racing. We were preparing for our very last

assembly in primary school. It’s time. It’s time to embrace all of the

trends of the years. It’s time to shine. The assembly reflected on all of

the trends that had consumed us over the years. It was hilarious,

entertaining and enjoyable. The audience laughed hysterically as we

put all of our strength into the performances. In the end we achieved

our goal of making this the best and funniest assembly yet. The best

part though was making our parents and teachers proud.

ROOM 9 ASSEMBLY The children of Room 9 had a lot of fun presenting a series of "advertisements" promoting schools. The skits included a rap about Bunbury Primary and the revealing of the new Teacher 3000. The item was very entertaining and well appreciated by the audience. Mrs

Culph was very proud of her performers.

SCITECH VISIT We have had SciTech in our school for Wednesday and Thursday doing Mix-and-Make and Chemical Science shows with groups and individual classes. The shows have been interesting and informative.

CONSTABLE CARE Constable Care will be delivering a show to our pre-primary children at 2pm on March 19th. The focus of the show will be Protective Behav-iours and it will be held in the pre-primary centre (outside near the sandpit). Parents and Carers are welcome to attend. There is no cost for this show.

HAVE SUM FUN MATHS Our Have Sum Fun Maths teams will be competing in the HSFM com-petition held at Bunbury Catholic College on Saturday March 23rd. More information will come home with those children involved. We wish them well and calculate that they will do their best! ASSEMBLY

Our next assembly will be hosted by Mrs Blackburn and Mrs Croft’s year 1 class on March 29 and will have a Harmony Day theme to it. Parents/Carers and family are most welcome to join us at 8:55 in the covered assembly area.
