Hello and welcome to the latest installment of The Link. Upon reading our latest offer-ing, you may reflect on another year that’s passed, getting through the recent election and surviving the end of the world (according to the Mayans). Reflecting on these life

issues and other events lends one to believe that we are always riding the roller coaster of life. Welcome to the theme of this issue of The Link, as we look at our collective roller coaster ride through the business world.

We ride through ups and downs, at slow travel and high-rate speeds, taking crazy turns that certainly are comparable to your favorite amusement park thrill machine. Hence the cover of this magazine, which reflects the fun and imaginative way we look at our crazy roller coaster journey.

We’ve all participated in “the ride,” but whether it be exhilarating, challenging or downright terrifying, one thing is certain: The experience is never dull, and attitude is crucial to surviv-ing and thriving. The Link Companies has had similar challenges and thrills as your company has had — and we are positioned for tremendous growth in 2013 and many years to come.

Our management team, territory managers and staff always keep a positive attitude. We strive to be stronger and be the best while navigating the twists, wild turns, and peaks and valleys of the business world. Quite frankly, we wouldn’t have it any other way! We always work with our vendor and retail partners on their “ride.” We hope you’ll read about some of the vendors that are thriving and growing to see what makes them highly successful.

In this issue, please enjoy the ads and product features from a wide variety of vendors. The Southern Link and Link 2 Sales offer the best selection of gifts, fashion accessories, home décor, novelties, jewelry, garden products, seasonal items, fun apparel and more. Also note some industry sources for ways to help your business through technology and marketing. Pay special attention to our Q&A with Joyce Washnik, founder of the very popular GIFTBEAT publication. Joyce is an industry icon and has a wealth of knowledge, as well as a passionate drive to help others. It’s fun to hear her story about her own life roller coaster. We thank her for her time and insight.

The Link Companies (formerly The Southern Link of GA) is closing in on 30 years. We have aligned forces with Don Mar Associates to expand our East Coast presence and are very excited about the future (read more inside). Our sales team and staff have been strengthened with strategic moves to position us for better performance. And we have made great enhance-ments to our showrooms. We look forward to your visit or visiting with you. It seems that we rarely get off the coaster, but that’s just fine.

We look forward to taking a seat next to you for the ride in 2013. Thanks for your continued support. Have a wonderful year!

Have you ever stood at the exit of a roller coaster and observed the riders departing? Some stumble out, simultaneously

clutching their necks and their backs, dazed and muttering how they got kicked in the head. Others are exhilarated and already running wild-eyed back to the front of the line. And others still leave with smiles on their faces, wiser to what scares them and what they can handle. (If you doubt any of the above, just Google “funny roller coaster pictures.”)

Retail vendors reveal what it takes to drive growth in a topsy-turvy economy.By Stacey Closser

RIDINGTHE

OF SUCCESS

Page 9: The Link

Riding through a prolonged economic re-cession can have similar effects. Take a look at any chart depicting business performance, consumer confidence, the stock market or retailing in the past five years and you’ll see plenty of highs and lows.

For The Link Companies, its partners and customers, the past several years have pro-vided a unique opportunity for introspection, change — and, yes, even growth.

“We’ve had to be proactive and do things a little differently, but we never planned for a decrease, nor did we have one,” says Brad Rosenkampff, chief operating officer of The Link Companies. “We always appreciate any order, and we work creatively with our cus-tomers.”

Every segment of the industry has taken a hit in some way or another, but Rosenkampff is encouraged by how different sectors have pulled together through it. “They say that misery loves company, but we feel that success loves company, too,” he says. By sharing expe-riences, buying patterns, marketing strategies and trend information, retailers, agencies and manufacturers are working together to bring innovative products to consumers.

It’s in that spirit that we asked a few of our seasoned vendors how they fared during this wild ride.

JOE KaRaS National sales director for Periwinkle Jewelry

and Barlow Designs (www.barlowdesigns.com)

Roller coaster of choice: The Stealth — “We fly under the radar screen.”

Overview: Barlow Designs’ business has actually continued to increase during the past four years. “We have a great sales team, plenty of inventory and the right mix of fashion acces-sories,” says Karas. “We have been right on the trends with the right price points and margins that the stores are looking for in a turbulent economy.” It hasn’t come easy, though. “You have to trust your instincts, trust your sales team and know your customers,” he says. Long hours and day-after-day dedication have also been integral to the mix.

Takeaway: “Listen to your customers. Be prepared. Have great customer service that answers the phone on the first ring. Have a passion for what you do, and remember that there is no substitute for hard work.”

Cindy HEnRyVice president of sales, Wellspring Gift

Roller coaster of choice: The Laser — “We introduced products with a focus that excited our customers.”

Overview: Wellspring Gift experienced growth in the past few years while evolving internally. “We have seen the business change in all areas with retailers, sales reps and our vendors,” she says. As a result of the market changes, Wellspring underwent a branding exercise that helped the company find a laser-sharp focus in its approach and product lines. “We continually look at each part of the busi-ness to ask if it still makes sense. We try to do right by our customers no matter what the issue, and in turn, they have been very loyal.”

Takeaway: “Stay focused on what you do best, and do it well.”

Periwinkle by Barlow jewelry is designed with the everyday woman in mind.

Wellspring creates and designs products that get this kind of reaction: “That is so cute!”

Page 10: The Link

BRian MillERCo-founder, The Good Bead

Roller coaster of choice: Whirlwind — “There has been no down time, as we have stayed fo-cused on bringing new collections to market.”

Overview: Miller counts his company as one of the fortunate ones to experience sus-tained and continued growth each year. The Good Bead was founded amidst the down-turn, so he has always had to watch his capital and resources carefully from the get go. “It’s

been difficult to manage business with the ups and downs of the economy for the past four years,” he says. “We’ve taken the position to have faith in the long term. It’s going to get better, so we’re aggressively adding new collections and products to our assortment. We’re making sure they’re priced competi-tively in recognition of consumers’ limited discretionary income.”

Takeaway: “Keep the faith. Not every product will be a hit, but you have to keep trying to stay relevant and original.”

ROBERT SMiTHOwner, Jewel Pop (Kameleon Jewelry)

Roller coaster of choice: Runaway Train — “We’ve experienced tremendous growth in the past five years.”

Overview: While Jewel Pop has expe-rienced significant growth, Smith says the pace is not what it would be in a more stable economy. “There’s been growth, but not the same we’ve had in the past,” he says. “For us, it’s a combination of having a product that is still affordable, is unique and is interesting to people.” He feels fortunate to be in a position of growth when so many others are struggling to maintain the bottom line. He’s hoping the broader financial story can turn around and give people a more upbeat outlook.

Takeaway: “Know what you’re doing and do it well. Stay on focus. You have to be more careful in going out on a limb. Taking risks is probably not as good an idea as it has been in the past.”

What about you? How has your organi-zation fared in the last four years? Join the discussion by sharing your loop-de-loop ex-periences and voting on your roller coaster of choice on The Link Companies’ Facebook page.

NOT BIGGER, JUST BETTERStaying ahead requires companies to constantly evaluate what’s working and what’s not. The Link Companies had to make some difficult decisions in the past year to better position the organization for success. This included streamlining its agencies into two rep organiza-tions — The Southern Link and Link 2 Sales. The move may have reduced the company’s footprint, but it actually spurred growth overall. The Link Companies’ experience proves that achieving growth isn’t about being big — it’s about being good at what you do.

This new paradigm has allowed The Link Companies to focus on its core business. “We’ve redefined the rep agency model, focusing on creating intimate working relationships with our partners,” says Fred Rosenkampff, CEO of The Link Companies.

The Link Companies has also strengthened its sales force by adding proven sales pro-fessionals and several quality manufacturers to each agency. The management team has been restructured to provide the best service to partners, and The Link Companies has aligned with the finest rep agency in the Mid Atlantic, Don Mar & Associates, to broaden its coverage of the East Coast.

“The Link Companies is more than just business and numbers on paper,” says Rosen-kampff. “It’s about results based on relationships.”

While The Good Bead is known for its beautiful yet affordable jewelry, the company also offers items such as cellphone cases.

The innovative PopRocks line JewelPops are all cut from a single stone and are featured with gorgeous silver settings.

A revealing interview with Giftbeat’s Joyce Washnik.

Joyce Washnik has established herself as a trustworthy source of information for the gift and home décor business. This year, she celebrates 20 years as

editor of the Giftbeat newsletter. We recently talked with Joyce about the industry, her experiences and what to expect in the years to come.

In a nutshell, what is Giftbeat?Giftbeat is a trend-tracking newsletter that polls a nationwide network of hundreds of independent gift retailers each month. Based on their feedback, we rate the top-selling lines in the gift industry, with national charts and regional charts for general gifts, seasonal items, fashion accessories, home categories, stationery and more. Giftbeat does not take any advertising. Some people refer to us as the “Consumer Reports” of the gift industry.

Congratulations on your 20-year anni-versary. How has the industry changed since you first began the newsletter? The industry has changed in many ways. Twenty years ago, we were tracking Russ Berrie’s Trolls as the No. 1 gift item. Today, it’s all about fashion categories, from jewelry to accessories to apparel.

One of the biggest changes is the number of choices consumers have for where to buy

gifts. At one time, retailers could just open their doors and customers would come. Today, they have to constantly remind customers that they’re open for business.

The Internet has had a major impact on our market, especially the collectibles industry. I also think what the consumer wants has changed. The emphasis today is much more on the “practical” as opposed to just decorative.

What is your outlook for the next 12-18 months?I’m optimistic, but I always am! Some have accused me of being a Pollyanna, and I sup-pose that’s correct. But I try to temper that optimism with a dose of realism. We don’t sugarcoat the market. If a trade show is down, we write about that. But then we look at the opportunities that exist for stores, based on some of the great products we find at market. People will always buy gifts. The key is to get them to buy gifts from you.

What’s next long-term? Going forward, I think the industry will con-tinue to be about “What’s new?” in the market, but it’s also about retailers creating stores that are havens for shoppers, where they can escape and find a warm, welcoming — and fun — atmosphere that can never be duplicated by the big-box stores.

What trends and categories do you see gaining strong momentum for 2013?I’d say fashion remains the category to watch. I also see continued growth in functional items, especially those for the kitchen and entertaining (kitchen gadgets are starting to show up more and more in our polling). Then there are personal accessories that are functional, such as nail files, tweezers, pill-boxes, compact mirrors and other items a woman might keep in her handbag. Look for this category to trend up in 2013.

I also expect gourmet items to have a strong year, from little pickup chocolates at the reg-ister to dips and jams and sauces. These small indulgences give people a lift. And tech-related accessories like iPhone holders and e-reader covers have great potential for 2013.

Thousands of retailers will read this issue of The Link. What advice would you give them?Be willing to embrace change. So many retail-ers get stuck in the same patterns, and I think they miss out on opportunities because of that. Take social media as one example. I’m surprised when retailers say they don’t have time for social media. Your competitors are making the time. If you don’t do it, you won’t be around to compete for consumers, who are spending more and more time online (from Facebook to Pinterest).

I just had a retailer send a note, thanking me for pushing our readers to jump on Facebook. She finally joined the bandwagon and she’s loving the interaction with her customers. You need to remind them that your store is there. And Facebook is free. Why wouldn’t you take advantage of that?

“Twenty years ago, we were tracking Russ Berrie’s Trolls as the No. 1 gift item. Today, it’s all about fashion categories, from jewelry to accessories to apparel.”

Page 31: The Link

You recently received the ICON Award (our industry’s equivalent to the Os-cars). Congratulations on that distinc-tion. Please tell our readers what this award means to you.I was honored to accept the Gift & Home Trade Association’s Award of Excellence at the ICON ceremony. After 20 years, Gift-beat remains a trusted source of indepen-dent coverage of the gift industry. I am very proud of that.

Tell us how you got started with Giftbeat.I wanted to create an advertising-free trade publication that wouldn’t focus on those com-panies that spent the most money advertising, but instead would focus on those that most deserved product coverage. We constantly search for smaller vendors and entrepreneurs with unique products, and share their stories and bestsellers with our readers.

What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned in your 20 years on the job?

To not take myself — or our work here — too seriously. What we do isn’t rocket science; it’s fun! I’ve learned to pace myself and understand that not every task can get done today. And to always to keep a supply of chocolate nearby.

Finally, tell us some of the benefits to subscribing to Giftbeat. Each month our readers receive unbiased feedback from their peers that help them make key buying decisions for their stores. In ad-dition to our monthly Charts, our RetailBeat and ProductBeat sections are all about ideas and inspiration that will make retailers money and save them money. We use every available inch of space with that goal in mind.

Subscribers also get free access to our on-

line discussion board, where retailers across the country share honest feedback on the market. Many people tell me it’s their No. 1 spot for market research on the gift industry. The best part of our online board is that re-tailers feel they’re not alone out there. There are others going through the same trials and tribulations, and they’re always willing to lend an ear and advice.

One of my greatest joys is reading the in-teractions among our board members, who are genuinely interested in helping their peers succeed. The atmosphere is so supportive. And oftentimes they share some of the fun-niest stories. If you need a laugh during the day, there’s no better place than Giftbeat ’s discussion board!

“Be willing to embrace change. So many retailers get stuck in the same patterns, and I think they miss out on opportunities because of that.”

Each year, The Link Com-panies donates a portion of every order we receive — throughout the entire year — to two outstanding charities. It’s a true blessing to work with these organizations, and it’s our hope that we can bring awareness to their in-credible work with children, women and families.
