CHURCH STREET UNITED
METHODIST CHURCH
Office Hours Monday through Thursday
8:30 am to 5:00 pm Friday
8:30 am to 2:30 pm
I love the Bible. I love that God’s word is accessible, and that within God’s word we find precepts for living, analogous illustrations for our own growth and spiritual development, and of course we find those words that bring us to eternal life. The Bible tells us about God walking with God’s people throughout a course of centuries, and because we can see how God has acted, we can see how God will act. We see God’s consistent love, grace, and mercy.
These are just a few of the things I see. But what do you see? Have you ever read the whole Bible? As we enter into a new year, and begin looking towards resolutions, I want to encourage us as a church to be engaged in God’s word. So, we’ll have Bible reading plans available just after Christmas that we will be free, and if you follow these plans for a year, then on December 31 of next year, you will have read through the Bible!
All of us have much to learn. I’ve read through the Bible multiple times, but I always pick up on new, life-giving things. I believe that if we read together, then maybe we can grow together too. If you’re interested in this, then let the church office know and we will be sure to get you a copy of the schedule of readings.
Grace and Peace,
Lance

Music Ministry Notes From Gordon
Happy New Year! It is hard to believe we are moving quickly toward another year. 2019 is fast approaching! I once again share the following hymn text by Frances R. Havergal which may serve as an encouragement to you. Another year is dawning, dear Father, let it be, In working or in waiting, another year with Thee; Another year of progress, another year of praise, Another year of proving Thy presence all the days. I cannot thank everyone who made Christmas 2018 such a wonderful time of worship. From our Advent readings/candle-lighting by our pastor, to our Young Musicians sweet anthem singing, to special solos/offertories, each Sunday was a very special time of worship. I especially wish to thank our Chancel Choir for the dedication to each service of worship. Their music truly helped us focus on the true meaning of the Christmas season. Their presentation of All Is Well on December 16th was a highlight of our Christmas worship. Thank you Chancel Choir for your dedication to the Music Ministry. I wish to remind parents of children that our Young Musicians choir will be back to Sunday afternoon rehearsals beginning Sunday, January 6th. I am looking forward to leading your child/children in fun music activities each Sunday afternoon. Please commit to having your child attend each and every rehearsal in 2019. The new year is an excellent time to join the Chancel Choir. The choir will soon begin work on new worship anthems and would welcome male or female voices to the choir. Come visit a 6:00 p.m. Wednesday evening rehearsal and see what a great time we have together. Another year is dawning, dear Father, let it be. On earth, or else in heaven, another year for Thee. Happy New Year, Gordon

Youth and Children’s Ministry News
Thank you to the Men’s Group for helping put on Brunch with Santa. It’s such a
fun and special event that many families love to come to. It was definitely a
great way to get the Christmas holiday festivities going. Also, a BIG Thank you
to Claude Anderson for letting us borrow his trailer and to those who
participated in the Selma Christmas Parade, whether you rode the float or
helped decorate the float, it was so much fun to come together to be a part of
our community as a church family.
Also, thank you to those that contributed and joined us to shop for the
Salvation Army Angel Tree. We were able to shop for eight angels.
There are 6 youth and chaperones attending the Strength to Stand conference in Pigeon Forge,
TN, December 27 - 30. Please pray for them as they are challenged to go beyond the surface of
casual Christianity and brought into a lifetime commitment to Jesus Christ.
We look forward to seeing everyone back on January 6th for Sunday night activities.
Confirmation will start January 6th during Sunday School (9:15 a.m.-10:15 a.m.) All 6th graders
are invited to participate. If you would like your child to participate, please contact the church
office. Please note that we would like parent(s) to attend the first meeting.
We are still looking for volunteers for the nursery. There will be a meeting in January to go over a
few things, so please be on the look out for the date and time.
Start collecting loose change. We will again be filling the blue and pink baby bottles for Safe
Harbor! Look for them around the church soon.

January Communion Offering
The Communion Offering on Sunday, January 6, will be given to All In Sports.
As the year quickly comes to a close, remember your pledge and help us finish the
year financially strong.
The Church Office will be open Monday, December 31, for final contributions.
MEMORIALS/HONORARIUMS
Remember that charitable contributions, in memory or in honor of someone special,
are a great way not only to honor them, but to contribute to the work of the Church as well.
WHITE CHRISTMAS OFFERING
This Offering has enabled Methodists to share their blessings with those whose circumstances in
life just haven't been fair. These children and young adults certainly didn't sign up to be in the situation they're in and with your support, they have the hope of a much brighter tomorrow. We continue to collect the White Christmas
Offering through the end of December.
