The Link September 2017
At Moore 1st UMC, we have united around a common mission, vision, purpose, and core values. We have completed a process of clarifying our mission and incorporating it into our work making new, committed followers of Jesus and sharing Christ with everyone. As you will see below, as we will say together in worship and when we meet, and as we will live out our calling to follow Christ, our clarified mission is:
Serve God. Grow Disciples. Share Christ. With Everyone.
Serve. Grow. Share. These ideals have be-come actions that drive the work we accomplish together. The clarification of our mission and the introduction of a discipleship plan for new and existing members will strengthen our church and help us live into the future God desires for us. In the coming days, there will be a new section of our website you will find at moorechurch.com/disciples. On this page, you will be able to sign up for and actively engage in our new discipleship plan with other members of our church and community.

Join us as we unpack the book of Titus and are
challenged to display the gospel in our live through

the fruit of godliness. As we pass these things on to
future generation, the Church stands in bright
contrast to the darkness of the world.
This 4-week study will be facilitated by Kenna
Johnson.
6th - 8th grade

like to confirm their faith in the UMC and be-
come baptized members of this congregation.
Confirmation will be held during the Sunday
School hour in room #. Confirmation is led by
a team of dedicated adults and includes
weekly lessons, a retreat, and multiple field

Many, many years ago, I went with a group to Alive in Saturday Night at Skyline Urban Ministries. At this event, we would provide dinner and a wor-ship service to those who were homeless in the community. Hayley was 5 years old and along with some of our other kids that went, dressed up as clowns to bring smiles and laughter to those who came. The only other thing I remember about that event is that there was one woman who smelled awful. She probably didn’t bathe for a very long time. I sat next to her and couldn’t get the smell out of my nose for days. It was uncomfortable for me but I always remember how uncomfortable it must have been for her. Our homeless population is quite uncomfortable with their smell. They live around it 24/7 except of course for those times they are able to shower and put on fresh clothes here. Think of the luxuries we have, homes that are blessed with; lighting at night, air conditioning/heat, running water, showers, refrigeration, showers, baths, pillows, a place to leave our belongings. The list could go on and on. I imagine you are much like me that are totally inconven-ienced and frustrated when the electricity goes out or water service is disrupted. I’d like to say, ‘homeless people have a choice’ and feel less responsible for helping them but I know better. Many of our homeless don’t have a choice, family is not an option, curing mental illness is not an option, employment for a homeless person without a permanent address or phone is not an option for most places. And then, there was the homeless person who taught us all how to serve, how to love, and who to bless. He walked dirt roads. He didn’t have access to a shower, bath, running water, electricity, or a washing machine. He probably smelled much like that woman at Skyline. If He walked in, would you scoff at how He looked, how He smelled, how dirty He was? Would you turn Him away? He taught us that when we do something for these people, we are doing it for HIM! So, the next time you see a homeless person, breathe in and allow yourself to be uncomfortable. Uncomfortable enough to do something to change yourself!

It has been a very busy summer
with camps and events filling our
youth calendar. One of those events
was our youth leadership retreat at
Fort Gibson Lake in Wagoner, OK on
August 11-13th. 12 youth and 4 adult
leaders spent the weekend discuss-
ing the future of our church youth program and also deep discussions about Jesus and our faith.
The youth brought ideas forward, discussed them and voted to make some changes to the program.
The first change that was made was the decision to rebrand the youth program in order to reinvigor-
ate it and bring new life and excitement for current and future members. The Agape Youth Group
will now be known as Moore 1st UMC Impact Student Ministries. Along with that change, the team
came up with a mission statement, vision, motivational battle cry, and key Bible verses to be the
foundation for the group. We are excited to start the new school year with a new identity and atti-
tude! You can see the new information about the group below.
Mission Statement: A safe place where students can participate, interact, grow, serve, catch fire,
and experience God through friendship and love.
Vision: Making an impact and change for the future.
Motivational Battle Cry: We are not kids, we are future leaders!
Foundational Bible Verses:
Colossians 3:14-15 – Above all, clothe yourselves with love,
which binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the
peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as
members of one body you are called to live in peace and al-
ways be thankful.
Psalm 133:1 – How wonderful and pleasant it is when broth-
ers and sisters live together in harmony!

Gerald Krows took members down memory lane with pictures when Seniors on the Go met in
Fellowship Hall for their monthly fellowship luncheon on August 10. Hosts and hostesses were
Donna Brooks, Mary McKnight and Dale Bergman. Forty-nine members attended. Visitors were
Darlene Bailey, Ramona Duff’s daughter, Debbie Duff, Kathy Burkhart, Janet Copeland, Eleanor
Fuller and Evan Cherry.
Gerald showed photos of past trips and members guessed when and where. It brought back
remembrances of good times.
Lila Mulkey shared those ailing and those on the mend: get well to Louise Villemarette,
recovering from broken hip, Joan Strong with heart issues, and Don Ledbetter.
Since VNA lost their funding, flu shots will no longer be given in October, so individuals can get
those at the Health Department or their pharmacy.
Landon Heath reminded the group of the upcoming Christmas show “Riders in the Sky:
Christmas the Cowboy Way” on December 12 at OCCC. Tickets are $25 and need to be purchased
by December 1. Also, the Senior Cabaret will be October 22 at 3 pm at what was formerly Hillsdale
Bible College.
President Joyce Statton reminded the group of the next meeting on September 14 when a gospel
band will entertain, followed in October by Mike and Kenna Johnson showing slides of their recent
trip.
Are you caring for a spouse, a parent or other loved one who now has Alzheimer's or dementia?

Saturday, September 2 | 8:00 am | Fellowship Hall UMM is going to be meeting for prayer break-fast again! Saints of Moore 1st UMC started this tradition over 30 years ago. We will honor them by continuing to meet on the first Saturday of the month for a hearty breakfast, short devotion, some singing, and lifting up prayer requests and joys!
This event puts kids in a drag strip style race to
see who’s the fastest speed demon on three
wheels… plastic big wheels!
Moore First United Methodist Church sponsors
one of these big wheels. We will decorate it, pa-
rade it, and cheer the racers on!
We will also have a track side booth to show the
community the many ways they can get involved
with Moore First!
Our custom Big Wheel team is in process of
decking out our Big Wheel, but you can be
part of the pit crew on September 23,
4:30-7:30 pm.

wannabe cheerleader… here is your chance!

The lazy days of summer & vacations are over & school sessions have begun. This means that
UMW is entering the busiest time of the year! Our General Meetings & Circle Meetings start back
up, planning all the events that will take place between now & the end of the year.
Nevertheless…first things first! A SUPER BIG THANKS to everyone’s generous jeans donation. We
received more than enough for our project early & passed the best donations to the Homeless Minis-
try & the area Domestic Violence shelter.
We are the proud hostesses of the Heartland District Annual UMW Meeting. Twenty-eight UMWs
from churches across our District are invited on Sat, Sept 23 from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm. Our speaker
is Yolanda “Faye” Perry & her topic is “Be Just. Be Green.” With its emphasis on climate justice, it
is one of the UMW National Office’s four social justice priorities. She will be tying together two of
the hottest topics in the news today, Social Justice & Going Green. We have the opportunity to hear
firsthand what we as UMW groups & churches can do locally to make a difference. The meeting is
open to ALL UMW members & women guests who are interested in UMW, climate justice, & going
green.
The Charla Circle will host their Annual Indian Taco Dinner on Sunday, Oct 15, complete with made-
from-scratch fry bread. This is in conjunction with the Bishop Janice Riggle Huie preaching at the
early service & combined late services that day. There are two servings: 11:00 AM & 12 noon in the
CLC. This yummy dinner also includes a delicious array of desserts & beverages. There is no
charge but donations are welcomed. The donations go to support missions involving women, chil-
dren, & youth specifically. Come hungry, stay a while & share the Word!
It’s one of the busiest days for the City of Moore with the Red Ribbon parade, Trunk or Treat, & Old
Town Halloween Trick or Treating! The Fall Festival is right in the middle of all of this & will be in full
swing from 9 am to 3 pm. The Festival is & has been an inviting door into our church family. UMW is
a proud sponsor of this event highlighting all the different offerings one can be a part of at Moore 1st.
Why is this date important to you, if you are not a UMW member? Your church organizations
can fund raise to support your missions with tremendous community support. UMW charges outside
vendor’s booth space but FUMC groups aren’t charged for space. However, sadly, last year several
church groups waited until the last minute to reserve a booth & it was too late. So….how do you get
set up for this BIG day at the church? Contact Heather Kalkbrenner (760-9985) or Joyce Peters
(206-4872) today to reserve your space before we are fully booked.
