Once upon a time, there lived a frog and a lion. They were great friends.

They liked to run and play together.

At the end of the day when they were tired, they would lie down together, look up at the stars, and drift off to sleep.

One day when the lion awoke, the frog was no where to be found.

The lion was scared for his friend’s safety…

…But determined to find him.

And so the lion set off to find the frog.

After searching for a while, the lion came across a population of mysteriously talking autotrophs.

He asked if they had seen his friend…

Page 10: The Lion and the Frog

No, we have not seen the frog,

But you might take a look for him in the bog.

So the lion set off again, and searched the bog…

At the bog he found a population of decomposers; He asked if they had seen his friend…

The frog just came through here hours ago,

Where he went, I do not know.

But I heard a buzz from a passing bee,

You might find your friend ‘neath the old Blackwood Tree

So the lion went out to the grassy plain to the big Blackwood Tree.

He searched high and he searched low, but he saw no sign of his dear friend the frog.

The lion became even more upset, and was about to give up…

Then a group of heterotrophs, in the manifestation of giraffes, wandered up to him, and he asked them if he had seen his friend.

I know where the frog has been astray,

Fast asleep, quiet as the new day.

He is hiding in the knotted hole,

In the center of this tree, it’s heart and soul.

In one last attempt, the lion looked deep into the hole in the tree…

And there sat the frog, happy as could be!

They ran off together through the plain, promising to never leave each other ever again.
