The Ian M Stockdale Humanitarian Award

Lion Ian served as District Governor of District 201 M in 1969 - 70, as International Director from 1976 to 78, and was awarded one of the Association's highest awards, The Ambassador of Goodwill. In 1979 he was awarded the MBE.

Lions Licola Village was created from Lion Ian's ability to clearly visualise an opportunity and was purchased and converted to the facility as we know it today through his untiring work for the youth of the nation.

In honour of Lion Ian's work The Australian Lions Foundation instituted the 'Ian M Stockdale Humanitarian Award.'

A donation of $1000 to the The Australian Lions Foundation enables the donor club to request the award for presentation to a worth recipient.

The Australian Lions Foundation is proud to support Clubs and their worthy projects through the approval of Grants for their community projects. – Lion Marilyn Lissenburg

Community Planting Day at Karkarook Park

Only a month after participating in National Tree Planting Day, the Lions Club of Moorabbin took part in a Community Planting Day at Karkarook, on Saturday August 25th. This time the Lions Club of Moorabbin also provided the BBQ.Yet again this was led by Parks Victoria’s Des Lucas, Ranger in Charge Braeside and Karkarook, and fellow Ranger Ernie de Marchie, with the Friends of Karkarook Park jointly hosting the morning with them. A total of 1500 seedling plants, propagated by dedicated volunteers from the Friends Group, were planted by the 17 people present on August 25th, which was a fantastic effort. The position chosen was near the bird hide, on the northern side of the lake.

Even before planting started at 9.00am, Lions Stuart Moyns, Marilyn & John Lissenburg had already set up the BBQ, surrounded by ample canvas director chairs, which with the lakeside location made a very inviting setting. This combined, with the soon to be familiar BBQ aroma, made for a very enjoyable break for the planters, who then got back to work. By the end of the morning the designated seedlings had found a new home and the BBQ was in full swing again.

Many thanks to members of the Moorabbin Lions who energetically planted. Lions Marilyn & John Lissenburg, Bill Tomkinson and Gillian Lelah also took part.

A special thank-you is extended to Lion Stuart, who prepared the food. Also to Lions John & Marilyn who assisted Stuart with the BBQ set-up and to Lion Jessie Brent who lent a helping hand with the food prior to the day. Thank you also to Lion Craig Walker who helped with the cooking.

Des thanked all present for yet another fantastic effort. – Lion Gillian Lelah

The bears are distributed to SES units, police stations, ambulance and air ambulance services, as well as major disaster areas such as Black Saturday bushfires, Victorian Floods as well as the floods in Queensland. When very young children who have suffered trauma need to be interviewed by emergence service personnel, they will talk to the teddy bear avoiding the possibility of upsetting them further. The bears also provide comfort by just being there to cuddle.Operation Teddy Bear is a Victorian Lions project, overseen by the Lions Crimewatch Committee, and has, over its 25 years, given away some 40,000 teddy bears. The bears are purchased directly from an importer with whom Lions have a very good relationship. We get an excellent price and recently an embroidered Lions emblem has been placed on each bear at no extra cost. To protect this relationship Lions have undertaken that every Teddy Bear will be donated to children in distress, hence they cannot be purchased be individuals. All orders are directed through Lion Shane who then coordinated their distribution throughout the State. Clubs can donate funds to the program, or purchase Teddy Bears to distribute to their local emergency services.

Lion Shane ( an honorary member of Sandringham Lions for 8 years) commenced the project whilst a member of Leos in 1987 and has maintained his passion ever since. Shane, a plasterer by trade, has recently been promoted to branch manager and senior salesman and also finds time to be a very active member of his local SES unit in Werribee (for 18 Years). Now married with two children, Shane coordinates the project as a family affair. – Pres. John Lissenburg

Operation Teddy BearMembers welcomed an old friend of the Club, Lion Shane Bruce who spoke at our recent dinner meeting about his passion for the ‘Operation Teddy Bear’ project. For 25 years Shane has been the Chairman of the project which has supplied comforting teddy bears to children in traumatic circumstances.

TRAVELLERS RETURN

Pride Editor Lion Sam Dalley and Lion June have recently returned from a three and a half week holiday in Vancouver.

To maximise their mobility, they hired scooters, enabling them to see most of the city. Highlights of the trip included a weekend in Victoria, capital of British Columbia, including a day at Butchant Gardens, a day trip to Grouse Mountain where the gondola to the peak easily accommodated Lion June's mobility scooter, and two nights at Whistler.

Despite temperatures in the mid 20's, the surrounding rugged peaks still retained a coverage of snow.

With a wheelchair on loan from the Hilton, Lions Sam and June easily negotiated the record-breaking 'Peak 2 Peak' Gondola, an engineering marvel that links Blackcomb and Whistler Mountains together at their peaks – the longest unsupported lift span in the world (just over 3 kilometres,) it is also the highest lift of its kind with an elevation of 436 metres, offering a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains.
