In 1994, three area businesses provided the first corporate sponsorship to

representing area businesses and organizations, have also lent their support. It
is impossible for us to give enough thanks for their financial backing. Their
support has allowed the Listowel Fair to grow and improve each year. To
further recognize the ongoing support of our Corporate Sponsors, a permanent

forward to ongoing partnerships with these companies and we encourage you to

GRAND OPENING OF THE LISTOWEL AGRICULTURAL FAIR
THURSDAY, JULY 13th Schedule of Events:
Parade starts at Livingstone Park, 7pm Opening Ceremonies following the parade
Official Opening of the 161st Listowel Fair by Corbyn Smith, World Champion Team Canada Sledge Hockey Team
Special Entertainment for the evening provided by
James Speer, Royal Canadian Legion All Ontario
Primary (Grades 1 to 3) Public Speaking Champion! James Speer is nine years old and lives on a hobby farm outside of Wingham
with his brother Ben and parents Dave and Margaret Speer. Like many kids his
age, James loves hockey, baseball and golf and also takes drum, vocal and
guitar lessons. James has also displayed his musical & theatrical talent as a two
time cast member with the Musical Theatre company, Studio 410 in Teeswater.
On his journey to win the provincial competition, James had to win in his
classroom, in the Grade 3 Speak off at Maitland River Elementary School in
Wingham, and then the Primary Division at the school. From there he won at
the Wingham Legion and then the Zone, District and Area Levels which led him
to the provincial competition, hosted in Stratford in May 2017.
The Listowel Agricultural Society welcomes James to the Listowel Fair!
Corbyn Smith, 18, from Monkton, Ontario has been playing
sledge hockey since 2003 at the age of 5. Because of the
cancer that he had when he was younger, he was unable to
play hockey until he found sledge hockey.
After starting his sledge hockey career in Hensall, Corbyn
started playing in Kitchener-Waterloo where his skills really
started to develop. He got the opportunity to play for Team
Ontario for a couple of seasons before being invited to play
for the National Development Team where he played for
two seasons before making the National Team this past
September. Corbyn never thought that playing sledge
hockey every weekend in a small town would turn into one
of the most unforgettable moments of his life.
Corbyn travelled to South Korea in April 2017 for the World Sledge Hockey Championships. The team played seven
games in nine nights and won six of those games. They lost to the USA in the preliminary round of the tournament
but met the USA again in the finals and got their revenge beating the USA 4 to 1. In Corbyn’s words, “Coming back
home to Canada with a World Championship Gold Medal is an experience that not many people get to experience
and I am very grateful.”
The Listowel Ag Society welcomes & congratulates Corbyn as he officially opens the 161st Listowel Agricultural Fair!
Ambassador Competition to follow.
James’ speech topic is

the tent located beside the Ag Hall. The Antique Tractors will kick off a day of tractor pulling. Don’t miss the Historical Machinery display open for the duration of the fair. The Saturday night tractor pull will also feature a Truck pull for
added entertainment.
Sunday will be busy with both, a Heavy and Western Horse Show, Goat Show, Youth Talent Search, and Power Paws Dog Show. On Sunday evening our fair will conclude with the always popular Demolition Derby.
I would like to thank the directors, and volunteers of the Ag Society for all your hard work and dedication in presenting our fair. Without your efforts this great community event would not be possible. Finally, I would like to extend my
appreciation to our sponsors. Without your generous financial and in-kind support we would not be able to provide the variety of quality events that we are able to present.
So come Celebrate Your Roots and Kick Up Your Boots as we celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday at the Listowel Fair!

2016-17 Listowel Fair Ambassador’s Message
Being the little girl that hid behind her parents to being able to speak to a group of over 100 people, becoming the 2016-17 Listowel Fair Ambassador has given me the chance to grow immensely. Being able to represent the Listowel Agricultural Society this past year has given me the opportunity to learn, understand and see the hard work and dedication that the wonderful directors within the Agricultural Society do to make the fair the success it is. The 2016 Listowel Fair hit a lot of milestones with having one of the biggest Senior’s Day lunches and with having the highest number of pulls within the garden tractor pull as well. A few of my favourite events of course were riding up on my family’s winning wagon during the Classic Series North American Six Horse Hitch as well as pulling alongside my Dad and brother at the tractor pull. The fair has always been a family affair and this past year being
able to watch my family and friends participate has definitely shown me what the Listowel Fair means to my “family.” Apart from the fair, I was also able to be a part of the Harvest Auction, I met almost 90 Fair Ambassadors from across Ontario and created new friendships at the Ontario Agricultural Society convention at the Royal York in Toronto, I went to the District 8 Agricultural Societies meeting, participated in the District 8 Ambassador competition with the 8 other Ambassadors from District 8 that I have become very close with and later on this year, I will be able to sit among many extraordinary Ambassadors as we compete for the title of ‘Canadian National Exhibition Ambassador of the Fairs.’ My year has been packed full of amazing experiences and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. This past year has allowed me to grow and view the community in a completely different way. Listowel is a proud agricultural community that will bend over backwards for any of their neighbours and I am honoured to have grown up and been raised here. Though my life’s journey’s may travel elsewhere, the Listowel Fair will always be home. To the upcoming Fair Ambassador, I wish you all the best as you will definitely learn a lot this upcoming year and will grow in the process. Enjoy your time. It will go by too fast. Thank you to everyone that was a part of the 2016 Listowel Fair’s 160th Barnyard Birthday Bonanza and who continue to be a part of the Listowel Fair as we celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday with the theme ‘Kick Up Your Boots and Celebrate Your Roots!’

161st Listowel Agricultural Fair Kick Up Your Boots & Celebrate Your Roots!
Greetings from John Nater,
MP Perth-Wellington
The fairground at which we gather every third weekend in July was little more than a farmer’s field in 1867. Only three short weeks before, on July 1st, the four Provinces of Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Ontario marked the founding of Canada. No doubt the celebrations were still taking place across much of the fledgling country throughout that month, perhaps even in Listowel. 2017 is Canada’s 150th anniversary and thousands of communities across the country, including those in Perth—Wellington, will be marking this occasion with a wide variety of events and celebrations. The Listowel Fair’s theme of “Kick Up Your Boots and Celebrate Your Roots” is a fitting homage to our ancestors and Canada’s sesquicentennial year. While the agriculture industry in Canada has changed significantly over the past 150 years, the common thread throughout the decades has remained the same--the hard work and dedication of our farm families which is the foundation of our rural communities.
I would like to thank the Board of Directors and volunteers for their commitment to, and enthusiasm for, keeping this tradition alive. I offer my best wishes for a safe and successful Listowel Fair!
Greetings from Randy Pettapiece, MPP Perth-Wellington
It is my privilege to welcome you to the Listowel Agricultural Fair. There is no better time than the year of Canada’s 150th anniversary to “Kick Up Your Boots and Celebrate Your Roots!” There is no better place to celebrate our roots than at the 161st Listowel Fair. I want to thank the Board of Directors and volunteers for your dedication and hard work; sponsors for your continued support; and everyone who takes part in this outstanding tradition. This is also a community effort. We should all be proud of it, as we should be proud of our rural and small-town way of life.
Let’s celebrate together. Randy Pettapiece
Greetings from Meredith
(Mert) Schneider,
Warden, County of Perth
On behalf of the County of Perth, I would like to bring greetings and wish the Listowel Agricultural Society well as you prepare for your 161st annual fair. Local fairs are one of the few ways to connect the agricultural community with their urban neighbours. It also gives an opportunity to showcase agriculture in the North Perth area. Having been involved with an Agricultural Society, I recognize all the hard work by the volunteers which makes any event successful. I am sure this year’s fair will be special as it features a salute to Canada’s 150th Anniversary. Keep up the good work in our community! Mert Schneider

Marie Bottrell
Marie Bottrell was born in London, Ontario in 1961 to very supportive parents who nurtured her talent from a very young age. At age 11, she joined her two older siblings on stage for the first time. After earning her
chops with the Whitestone County Band, Bottrell began recording for the Mercey Brothers’ MBS label
at just 17. Marie released her self-penned compostition “Just Reach Out and Touch Me” in 1978. The positive reaction led to an invitation to join the Grand Ole Opry Show on its Canadian tour.
After a successful second single made its way up the charts, Marie was rewarded with a nomination at RPM’s Big Country Awards in the Outstanding New Artist category. Marie was voted Outstanding Female Performer by RPM in 1979 and over the course of her career she has scored four JUMO nominations and two wins as the CCMA Female
Vocalist of the Year in 1983 and ‘84. Marie began touring with her own band and together, Marie Bottrell & Cottonwood appeared on all of the popular
shows of the day including: Tommy Hunter, The Joan Kennedy Show, Ronnie Prophet, The Family Brown and Ray St.Germain as well.
Throughout her career, Marie has performed with Nashville starts like Tammy Wynette, Tom T. Hall and Minnie Pearl. Marie was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Honour in 2010.

This is your opportunity to join in the making of a beautiful quilt. This is our annual quilt block challenge and we invite you to participate in this year’s competition. We have had an excellent exhibit of quilt blocks in the past and we have designed unique quilts which are then auctioned off as a fund-raiser for the Agricultural Society. We really appreciate your support for these quilt projects.
We have put together another great idea for the quilt block challenge this year. You will be able to pick up your quilt block kit from “Pins & Needles” 177 Main St. W., in Listowel or by calling Linda Robertson at 356-2468. We will be happy to mail a kit to you if you are out of town. There is no charge for your quilt block kit.
The blocks need to be submitted to the Listowel Agricultural Hall on Tuesday July 11th (7pm to 9:00pm) or Wednesday July 12th (8am to 11am).
The blocks will be judged and prizes awarded as followed:
1st $25.00; 2nd $15.00; 3rd $10.00
The blocks submitted become the property of the Listowel Agricultural Society. The blocks will be pieced together to form a unique pattern and will be quilted and be part of our fundraising event this fall. Thank you for supporting the “Quilt Block Challenge 2017.” Happy Quilting!

Flowers in ALL classes must be HOME GROWN,
established in suitable containers. Any exhibit not worthy
will not be awarded a prize. At the discretion of the judge
and the committee, a section may be subdivided.
Helpful Hints for Preparing Materials
(Ontario Judging Standards for Horticultural & Floral
Design) 1. Cut flowers and foliage the evening before the show or in
the early morning.
2. Flowers stay fresher and show better if there are NO
LEAVES in the container.
3. Make a fresh slanting cut at the end of stems for maximum
water intake.
4. Place in a wide bucket in deep warm water, preferably
overnight.
5. Store in a dark, humid, draft-free place.
6. Some cut flowers, foliage and woody materials do not
readily absorb water and require further treatment to
prevent wilting. Woody branches may benefit from
splitting cut ends and some need the thick outer layer
removed as well. Some cut flowers (e.g. poppies) benefit
from burning the stem ends while others benefit by placing
stem ends in boiling water or from chemicals in the water.
About 2 tbsp. of glycerine in 4L of water, or florist crystals
may be beneficial. Details are also available in flower
arranging books.
7. Removal of dust, stains and other foreign material from
blooms and foliage enhances the exhibit.
8. Re-cut stem ends before placing in show containers.
