IntroductionWeknowhowlostyoucanfeelwhenyouoryourlovedoneisdiagnosedwithabraintumour.Butwealsoknowhowmanyinvaluablesupportservicesthereareavailablelocallythatcanhelpyouateverystepofyourbraintumourjourney.

Hereatbrainstrustwe’vebeenworkingtirelesslywiththehelpofourfantasticvolunteerssearchinghighandlowforuseful,localservicesforpeopleaffectedbyabraintumour.Thisdirectory,focusingonthecharitysector,includesinformationonsomeofthebestoftheseservicesinAberdeenandTheHighlands.Wehopeyoufindittobeanauthoritativeguideandthatithelpsyouaccesstheseresourcesinyourareaquicklyandwhenyoumostneedthem.

The essence of networking is to share experiential sympathy and understanding which can be beyond the scope of health care professionals. Networkingalsoallowsyoutomeetothersfromthewidercommunity–notjustthosewhotypicallyattendsupportgroups.Thesepeoplecanincluderesearchers,fundraisers,charityworkersandotherinterestedparties.

Itisimportanttobeawarethatwhilstnetworkingeventscanbeasourceofexcellentinformation,theyaremuchmore‘free-flowing’thanfacilitatedsupportgroups.Thediscussionisnotcontrolled,opinionscanbesubjective,andtheymaynotconstitutemedicaladvice.

Somepeoplecanfindithelpfultodiscusstheirfeelings,needsandconcernsinaconfidentialspacewithateamexperiencedinhelpingpatientsandthoseclosetothem.Herewehavesomeoptionsforyou.

Support groups are a place for people to give and receive both emotional and practical support as well as to exchange information.Peoplewithabraintumour,aswellastheirfriendsandfamilies,findsupportgroupstobeavaluableresourcewherepeoplecansharemedicalinformation,getconfirmationthattheirfeelingsare“normal,”educateothers,orjustletoffsteam.Whensomeoneissearchingforasupportgroup,thesinglemostimportantthingtoremembermaybe:ifthegroupdoesn’tfeelrighttoyouordoesn’tmatchyourneeds,tryadifferentgroup.Therearemanyoptionsavailable.
