Liturgy of the WORD1. First Reading Different readings are

prescribed for each day.At the end of the reading, the people respond “Thanks be to God”

2. Responsorial Psalm The choir and/or cantor sing or recite the psalm; the people join in the repeated response

3. Second Reading A second reading is prescribed for all Sundays and major feasts, but not for most weekdays or minor feasts

4. Alleluia

6. Homily A time when the priest speaks to the people reflecting on the readings from the mass or the feast/occasion being celebrated

Nicene or Apostle’s creed is recited to state the beliefs we received at baptism

8. Prayer of the Faithful Special prayers (petitions) are offered to God and the community for acknowledgement and prayer.

Liturgy of the Eucharist• Preparation of the

Altar and the Gifts- gifts of bread and wine are traditionally brought to the altar by a member of the congregation

• Prayer Over the Gifts- The priest prays that God will accept our sacrifice of bread and wine

Liturgy of the Eucharist• Eucharistic Prayer- This prayer of thanksgiving is

the center and high point of the entire celebration

• Preface- We give thanks and praise to God

• Holy, Holy- We sing an acclamation of praise

Liturgy of the Eucharist• Eucharistic Prayer- This

prayer of thanksgiving is the center and high point of the entire celebration

• Consecration- The bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ

• Memorial Acclamation- We proclaim the mystery of our faith

• Great Amen- We affirm the words and actions of the Eucharistic prayer

Liturgy of the Eucharist (cont)• Communion Rite- We

prepare to receive the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ

• Lord’s Prayer- We pray the Our Father (Our Father, who art in heaven. . .)

• Sign of Peace- we offer one another Christ’s peace (usually by shaking hands and saying “Peace be with you”)

• Breaking of the Bread and the Lamb of God- We pray for forgiveness, mercy, and peace.

Liturgy of the Eucharist (cont)• Communion Rite- We prepare to receive the Body and Blood of

Jesus Christ• Communion- We receive the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.

When receiving communion as the Eucharist minister offers you the “Body of Christ” you reply “Amen.”

• Prayer After Communion- We pray that the Eucharist will strengthen us to live as Jesus Christ did. (This is done by kneeling/sitting in silence, until the Priest begins speaking again)

Concluding Rite

• Blessing- We receive God’s blessing from the priest

• Dismissal- We go in peace to love and serve the Lord and one another.
