COMMEMORATING THE “FITZ” Page 2 November 2013 The Repeater
For the seventh year in a row, LARC members
operated special event station W8F at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle commemorating the sinking of the iron ore freighter SS Edmund Fitzgerald in a storm on Lake Superior on November 10, 1975. This year’s event happened to fall the day before the 38th an-niversary of the vessel’s sinking - November 09, 2013.
After setting up the antennas in a fierce, chilling wind, the group gathered in the auditorium to work the event, operate the SSB, CW and digital stations and an-swering questions from visitors. John Hopkins, K8YYZ and Mike Rudzki, N8MR reported 58 phone, 7 PSK31 and 6 satellite contacts com-pleted at the Dossin. John then operated from home and made 5 more on PSK31, plus 11 phone contacts. Doris, KD8DXJ, also operated W8F from home and made 58 phone contacts. That brings our total count to: Phone – 127; CW – 5; PSK31 – 12 and Satellite – 6. Stations who contacted W8F will receive a special event certificate in the coming weeks.
We give special thanks to the Dossin Great Lakes Museum for once again hosting our event.

Field Day Results Are In!
FR: Roger Reini, KD8CSE
The results from Field Day are in.
They are posted on the ARRL site and pub-
lished in the December issue of QST.
How did our clubs do (LARC &
FARL)? • Our score in category 4A was 6364 with
1960 QSOs and 53 participants.
• We were 1st out of 4 entries in 4A Michi-
gan.
• 4th out of 14 entries in 4A Great Lakes
Division.
• 22nd out of 157 entries in 4A total
• 14th out of 237 in the Great Lakes Divi-
sion • All classes 4th out of 86 entries in Michi-
gan, all classes.
That looks pretty good, once again.
Congratulations to both clubs!

THE BOTTOM OF THE WORLD OPENS UP TO HAMS BY N8MR As Antarctica reaches its summer, a number of amateur radio stations will be on the air. They can be found all over the bands, but primarily congregate in the 20 Meter Phone band, usually around 14.240 (+/- 10kHz). The Worldwide Antarctic Program, WAP, has a website which has all sorts of details on these stations and their activities. Check it out.
WAP is dedicated to hams and Antarctic Chasers—on since 1979. http://www.waponline.it
