FLOTILLA COMMANDER’S REPORT
April Flotilla Meeting – Our next meeting will be Thursday April 5 at 7:30 PM (1930
Hrs.). I would appreciate if everyone would come in uniform. Either ODU or Tropical
Blue’s.
Venue for this meeting - We’re back into our Boca base.
Fourth Cornerstone/Fellowship Event – The March event was well attended with approximately 25
members and significant others attending. Thank you to all who attended and helped with the setup,
serving and cleanup.
Division Jungle Queen Cruise and Dinner – keep an eye on your email for an invitation to this event
on Saturday evening April 28, 2018. This is a four-hour cruise and all you can eat dinner on the Jungle
Queen private island. Here are some more details:
When: Saturday April 28, 2018
Time: Plan to arrive at the boat no later than 5PM (1700). Boat departs at 6 PM (1800). Returns at 10
PM (2200). Parking is $7 carpooling is encouraged, some space available at McVey house for no cost.

tickets so sign up early and we will be able to increase our ticket purchase if seats are available.
Division Meeting - The Division meeting for March was held at our Boca Base. Thank you for all
those 36 members who attended. These are the highlights:
Division dues for 2019 will be raised an additional $5 dollars. They are now $5 and will be
raised to $10. Our Flotilla dues will increase to $65 to cover this increase.
The combined Division wide holiday part and change of watch date and venue where agreed
upon. The date is December 2, 2018 at the Coral Springs Marriott. Our Flotilla needs to provide
two volunteers to assist with planning and decorations. Please let me know if you are interested.
Hurricane Notification and Reporting – Everbridge will be managed from the national level with
a District/Division resource.
National Safe Boating Week (May 19 to 25) – plans were discussed. Commodore Judith Hudson
requested that every individual in District 7 put in at least two hours into this week’s events.
Division meeting for April will be on Saturday April 21, 2018 at Station Ft. Lauderdale (0900-1200).

Hello Shipmates!
There are a lot of exciting things happening in Flotilla 03-06. We are back in our base, which is the
most exciting thing. We hosted the division meeting for March. Andrea is presenting a mini-training on
April 5th
for the new state boating rules and I have seen the slides and they are very informative for
everyone.
Rod D. is working on a speaker from the hurricane center for April and this should be very enlightening
since we are going to start hurricane season soon.
We want to give a big hand and thanks to Judith Hudson, District 7 Commodore.
Bob Hersey is turning 90 and he’s one of the most remarkable individuals I have ever met. Also, Gary
Belford will be honored for his 40 years of dedicated service. I also want to say a special thanks to
Division Commander Robert Sherman and Division Vice Commander Dr. Bret Ribotsky for their
unbelievable job they are doing for the Division!

Here it is the April issue of the LOG. Time flies. Tax returns are due to the IRS. National Safe Boating
Week starts on May 19, although, we should be practicing and teaching safe boating all year. “Wear It”
as they say.
A lot of things are happening. Nice “Fourth Cornerstone” function on March 15 in our revitalized Coast
Guard Auxiliary Base Classroom. It looks really nice. We will be hosting the leaders of CGAux Div. 3
on March 20 and have the opportunity to show it off.
The next Flotilla Meeting will be on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 1930 (7:30 P.M.) at the base. Please
make an effort to attend and wear a uniform, if you have one. The meetings are always fun, interesting
and educational. If you are not involved, seek out ways to get involved.

So far this year things are going along as usual.
The VE team has a new member. Bob Blitzenberger has recently completed the training and is now
ready for action as the new Vessel Examiner. Thank you Bob and welcome to our flotilla.
As things move forward, VEs please keep account of the vessels inspected by the month as I will call on
you from time to time for updates.
Vessel Examiners please get the word out to the boaters of the Kidde fire extinguisher recall. We have
noticed that many boaters are not aware of the recall.

[email protected] Thank you to the instructors for our March 10
ABS class: Tom Rutherfoord, Bob Hersey,
and Michael Byer, and Liliane
Meghabghab. We graduated 6 students, who
once again, all managed to find the class held
in the Municipal Services Building. This was
the third class in this location, before moving
back into our base/classroom. The city its
very comfortable conference room, but we’re
ready to get back to our beautifully renovated
classroom.
I appreciate all the instructors, aids, public affairs staff, program visitors, vessel examiners, and anyone
who has referred students to the classes! Our next classes are April 7 and May 12. Look for the gold
Public Education brochure for the full schedule.

Annual Boca Boating and
Beach Bash – Sunday, March 4.
We had an outstanding turnout again this year. All the line-handlers and the
boat crew were enthusiastic, professional, and best of all, encouraging and
friendly to all the picnic guests. The dockmaster estimates that we helped with
over 1200 boat rides. The weather cooperated nicely, and we shared not only
the excitement of the guests, but a fun day in the best of Florida’s seasons.

Report Horseshoe Crab sightings Report horseshoe crab spawning sightings with new FWC smartphone application:
The FWC Reporter app is free to download on Apple or Android smartphones or tablets
from the App Store and Google Play.
Did you know that horseshoe crabs have been on the earth about 450 million years? They pre-date fish,
mammals even dinosaurs. However, their numbers have declined due to overfishing and loss of
habitat.
Spring is peak mating season for horseshoe crabs, and biologists with
the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC)
encourage sighting reports with the new FWC Reporter application.
Horseshoe crabs mate year-round, and it is most common to see groups
along the shore in March and April. To identify mating pairs, look for a
smaller male on top of a larger female. Beachgoers will likely have the
best luck spotting horseshoe crabs around high tide, within three days of
a full or new moon.

These sighting reports provide important information about population distribution to the FWC.
If you see a horseshoe crab on its back, gently pick it up (holding both sides of the shell) and release it
back into the water. Simple actions like this help conserve this species and the many other species that
depend on it.
The FWC asks the public to report sightings through one of several options. Go
to MyFWC.com/Contact and go to “Horseshoe Crab Nesting Activity” for the “Florida Horseshoe Crab
Spawning Beach Survey” link or use the FWC Reporter app. You can also report findings via email
at [email protected] or by phone at 866-252-9326

DIVERSITY MANAGEMENT
Good diversity management is not measured by an organization’s demographics, but, by
how well its leaders identify and capitalize on its members talents.

Has your Auxiliary member ID card expired?
Once a year, check the expiration date on your member ID card. The card is valid for 5 years. When it’s
time to get a new card, you initiate the process. If it’s within a few months of expiration, or has already
expired:
1. Tell the FC or VFC that you need a renewed ID card. They can help you get started.
2. Have your picture taken in the office (red background, uniform shirt). Zoom in so only your
head with the red background is showing.
3. In an email, send the picture to the FC. Also provide the current information on the back of
your card: Height (inches), weight, eye color, hair color, blood type, date of birth, and ID
number.
The FC will submit your photo and information into the system. In a few weeks, the new card will be
sent to the FC, who will have it at meetings. Bring your old card to swap out for the new card.
Note: If you present an expired card at the gate of a military base, you will not be allowed entry and
your card might even be confiscated.

Congratulations to Gary Belford on 40
years of Service in the Auxiliary

Last June 2017, Flotilla 36 member Gary
Belford celebrated his 40 years in the Auxiliary.
In that time, he has been an instructor,
watchstander, and boat crew member.
Gary learned about boating while in high school
in Long Island, where he crewed on a boat
owned by a neighbor who was in the Power
Squadron. Then, while living in Manhattan, he
read in the New York Times about a BS&S
course offered at the Marine Inspection Station.
He joined the Auxiliary there, and when he moved to Boca in 1979, he joined the Flotilla 36.
Although Gary isn’t involved in boat crew or teaching these days, he has spent many years participating
in several interesting Coast Guard and Auxiliary activities. He is quick to volunteer for everything from
beach clean-ups, to oil-spill clean-ups. He recalls the 3-week deployment that he and Terry Day (F36)
had to Texas in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Gary explained, “It's the good-hearted Aux people, like you, and the amazing experiences I have had
being with USCG AUX that are of such great value to me.”
When I asked Gary about any particularly good
memories, he wrote: “I recall a patrol with John
Utley on 25' Corn Flakes. It was a late afternoon
in May. The sky was filled with black, roiling
clouds. The wind was SW 15-20 knots and
NOAA was calling for tornadoes and
waterspouts moving north on and off the shore
of Pompano. We were off Boca, having been
asked to warn small craft about the weather
change. Radio Station Ft. Lauderdale called us
for a case, to look for a 55' cabin cruiser 2-3
miles east of Boca Inlet. It had no engines, no
gas, also no anchor lines, with 11 persons on
board, including a baby. The owner had just
bought the boat. When we found it, John pulled alongside, and I hopped on to check it out. I knew the
boat well, having crewed many times on Jack Murray's same Hatteras [Jack Murray was also a member
of F36 at the time]. John and crew prepared to tow. Shooting the inlet on the incoming tide, in tow, was
our concern. Lucky, the generator was also diesel and its tank line also connected by valve to the port

engine, so we diverted some fuel from our boat and got it fired up. With the incoming tide and the wind
working like a beam reach, we sailed her into the inlet. John called the bridge and they got that open.
Just as the engine sputtered out, we docked and tied her down at the Boca Hotel. When I was leaving the
boat, the woman with the baby came up to me and said, ‘Thank God for the Coast Guard.’ That was
worth ten years.”
An avid roller blader and marathon runner, Gary has also been a long-time member of the Coast Guard
Running Club. In 2011, he wrote, “A few years ago, I was going to Washington, DC, to run in the
Marine Core Marathon. I mentioned this to Tom Kegan. He asked me to wear something with Coast
Guard Auxiliary on my shirt for the marathon. The MCM finish area is at Arlington Cemetery at the foot
of the Iwo Jima statue. Very exciting! While there, I met some other “done” runners wearing shirts with
USCG emblazoned across the chest. We chatted for a few minutes, and they said I should join the
CGRC club. Sometime later I found their website online, and I am now serving as the club point-of-
contact for the 7th District.”
Gary runs various race distances, from 5Ks to ultra-relays with 6
runners 200+ miles. He prefers the long run and has completed over 24
marathons. He also likes to support various charities with his running.
For the Boston Marathon in 2011, he was a runner on TEAM ACCESS.
Access helps kids in HS get started on the college path as early as the
9th grade and then guides them all the way to a college diploma. He
made a donation to Access in the name of the CG Running Club.
Gary is still running. His most poignant run was in 2014, when he was
part of a Coast Guard team. The event was called “Run to Remember,”
with runners wearing t-shirts honoring specific military people who had
died in line of service. Being an Auxiliarist, Gary was given a shirt with
the name of an Auxiliarist who died in an air accident. He carried that
person in his heart as he crossed the finish line. And on his spring
agenda is the Opa-Locka annual 5K “Runway Run” on April 13, where
he will again run alongside the active duty runners.
He does most of his training on the beach, which he considers a type of “beach patrol,” constantly on the
lookout for situations that might need assistance. For example, on a recent beach run, he came upon a
couple of people trying to remove fishhooks from a seriously injured pelican floating in the surf. Gary
ran to the nearest lifeguard station, a considerable distance down the beach, and as a result, a beach truck
was dispatched to transport the injured bird to Gumbo Limbo. He feels that his Auxiliary training has
increased his situational awareness and readiness, all while enjoying his hobbies. He considers his beach
training as a way of extending the Coast Guard training he has received into his regular life.
Gary’s dedication and generosity are inspirational to members who look for ways to merge their hobbies
with the interests and activities of the Auxiliary. Thank you for your continued service, Gary. We are
honored to have you in our flotilla.

At the MARCH Meeting:
FC Mario Stagliano leads the March 1 Flotilla meeting, held at the Boca Raton Community
Center.
Guest speaker Dr. Kirt Rusenko, Marine Conservationist, Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, spoke
about light pollution and its effects on sea turtle nesting and human health. Recommended people
use eco-friendly (not LED) lighting.

On Saturday, March 3, Bob Sherman gave a 4-hr TCT class at our base for the boat crew class.
Auxiliarists Complete
CPR/First Aid Training Photos by Andrea Rutherfoord
Brian Lichtenstein, a physician assistant and Auxiliarist, provided CPR and First Aid training to 15
Auxiliarists and family members on March 17. He was assisted by Ron Hady, whose wife also attended
the training. This certification from the American Heart Association is valid for two years and is added
to members’ training records.
