As the oldest university in the English-speaking world, Oxford is a unique and historic institution. There is no clear date of foundation, but teaching existed at Oxford in some form in 1096 and developed rapidly from 1167, when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris.

Lincoln Statue The solemn bronze Lincoln that

casts his gaze toward the state capitol was placed on Bascom Hill in 1909. It is the single duplicate of an original that was cast in 1906 by New York artist Adolph Alexander Weinman, intended for the town of Lincoln’s birth, Hodgenville, Kentucky. When it became known that a single replica of the statue was to be cast, Weinman received several substantial bids. Richard Lloyd Jones (a cousin of Frank Lloyd Wright), who had been involved with the restoration of the Lincoln birthplace, secured the replica for the university.

Red GymDedicated in 1894 by President Charles Adams as a structure “built to endure for all time,” the Red Gym was both a training facility for citizen militia and a student center for recreation, sports, and social and cultural events. In 1993, the building was named a National Historic Landmark. Today the carefully restored and historically preserved Red Gym serves a new, adaptive role as a student and visitor center. Stop by the Red Gym from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday though Friday, to visit public areas of the building on your own, or see more with a 30-minute guided tour, available by appointment.

Group Fitness (Group-X) classes are offered at the SERF and Nat to currently enrolled UW-Madison students, faculty/staff, UW-Madison Student Guest-Auditors and spouse/domestic partners that have paid the Recreation Membership fee and the Group X fee. Participants are encouraged to work out at their own level and to monitor their intensity throughout each class.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Club Sports Program is comprised of various student organizations focused on a particular sport. Many clubs are organized for the primary purpose of competition - either intercollegiate or inter-club, while other clubs are recreational or instructional in nature. The Club Sports Program is designed to enhance the student experience while participating in a sport of choice. All clubs practice regularly in order to promote and develop the skills and interests of their members.

The University of Toronto was founded as King’s College in 1827 and has evolved into a large and complex institution. It now occupies three campuses: Scarborough and Erindale and the historic St. George campus. It has federated with three smaller universities which are on the St. George campus, and is affiliated with several colleges and institutes. There are ten fully affiliated teaching hospitals in metropolitan Toronto. Faculty conduct research in many places in Canada and around the world.

College Libraries Discover the old-fashioned reading rooms in Knox College, Emmanuel College and University College, which provide tables, individual desks or carrels, and lots of natural light. Also check out the recently renovated libraries at Victoria College and Trinity College. All college libraries have wireless Internet connections and many have group study rooms that you can book in advance.

Gerstein Science Information Centre

The Gerstein Information Centre provides over 1,400 study spaces, including those found in the five-story Morrison Pavilion that faces east onto Queen’s Park. This comfortable and modern facility has room for 800 students and features a newly renovated heritage reading room with a cathedral ceiling and skylight roof.

Locally Grown Food The local food movement is alive and well at U of T. In September 2006, U of T partnered with the Local Food Plus Initiative (LFP), a network of certified Ontario-based farmers and processors who grow and sell food produced according to sustainable methods that are environmentally and socially responsible. Many residences and cafeterias on campus serve fresh, seasonal food and dishes made from these ingredients
