Net Datatel “Our Commitment to the

North of Scotland”

Net Datatel opened its new base in Chanonry Road

North in Elgin. In the three years since its launch in

Lossiemouth it has a turnover in excess of £1.5

million. The broadband, telecoms and fibre

connectivity specialist currently employs 10 staff,

eight of them at its Moray base. It has four licence

holders who have taken the company to Aberdeen,

Glasgow, Manchester and the Highlands. Net

Datatel also hopes to expand into Edinburgh,

Dundee and Newcastle this year.

Net Datatel prides itself on trusted technology

solutions and offers extensive training and on-call

engineering resources to clients who have had a new

system installed. NetDatatel is rigorous in its

commitment to make the communications experience

and technology efficient for its clients. Differing

business needs will dictate priorities such as

reliability, security, cost, scalability and the ease with

which it can be added. It also offers fraud

prevention maintenance and dedicated account

management.

Net Datatel does not operate from a call centre,

instead choosing to handle queries from start to

finish by a member of its own dedicated team.

Net Datatel has recently become an executive

partner of the Inverness Chamber of Commerce and

was shortlisted for the prestigious Retailer of the

Year for small businesses accolade at the Comms

Business Awards.

Dear Neighbours,

Lossie Local time has come round yet again -

here we are with bumper issue number 27. I

couldn’t squeeze everything into the usual 48

pages, so you’ve an extra 8 to keep you going

over summer. And with it we welcome some new

advertisers - please consider showing these and

our usual regulars your full support: Net Datatel

(opposite), David McClarnon Print (page 5) and

Photography (page 51), MFJ Homes (page 6),

Wikaniko & KBK (page 9), Moray Laundering

(page 36), Nordic Walking (page 41) and Kelly’s

Hair Design (also page 41).

Our front cover photo was taken by Levi

Maddison - thanks Levi, and a special thanks to

the Senior Citizen’s Bus Trust Walking Group for

stepping in last minute to undertake delivery

after I’d messed up and didn’t have anyone

organised. This issue’s 10% profits will be split

between our two primary schools St Gerardine’s

and Hythehill.

Editorials this issue include Rizza’s 100 year

anniversary celebrations on page 12, the latest

news from RAF Lossiemouth on page 26, an

update from our community council on page 30,

and the Boys’ Brigade’s recent achievements are

on page 32. Plus lots more ... Also be sure to

check out the ‘What’s On’ pages for listings of

community events over the next couple of

months (starting page 15).

The Autumn issue will be out week beginning 18

August, so please be sure to get in touch if you

have a business to advertise, or have any

community information to submit. Full details at

Award-winning company MFJ Homes is nearing completion of the prestigious development Masonhaugh Rise, at Burghead on the beautiful Moray Firth coast. Now it plans to apply the same attention to detail and high level of quality to the private sector, building one-off homes at the top end of the market.

Incorporating the award-winning qualities synonymous with MFJ Homes, each property will be individually designed and finished to the highest standards with the cutting-edge design taking full advantage of the property’s surroundings. The Moray-based company does not use mass-produced timber kits but instead constructs its own timber frames

onsite, using heavier timbers to create a more substantial build throughout. That same commitment to quality extends to all other aspects of the build.

Those looking to build their dream home but wanting a stress-free experience can take advantage of

the company’s full construction package which helps with everything from design through to completion, with all trades carried out in-house by employees.

This is just one of the many ways MFJ Homes helps its customers save money. Another is the fact it doesn’t have a large office or workshop base, meaning it can pass all savings on to the client. A spokesman for the company said: “We will beat any bona fide quote for timber frame-based construction for complete builds on a like-for-like basis. Customer input and satisfaction is key throughout the project.”

MFJ Homes is a member of the National House Building Council and the Federation of Master Builders. It was formed in 1986 by Peter Hizzett, a joiner to trade who served his apprenticeship at Seafield Estates in Cullen on the Moray Firth coast. Since then, MFJ Homes has constructed more than 170 houses throughout the region, specialising in building unique properties for clients from Inverness to Aberdeen.

When the Rizza brothers began manufacturing ice

cream to a traditional Italian recipe in 1914, little would they have imagined the family

business still going strong and celebrating 100 years later.

James and his brother Domenico left the small village of Belmonte Castello during 1907. It was during 1914 that they opened a confectionery shop in Mid Street, Keith. After briefly being

interrupted by the 1st World War James opened a confectionery and ice cream shop in Aberdeen in 1919, and in the late 1920's Domenico opened his own confectionery shop in Huntly.

Sadly, fire devastated James’ shop and he, his

wife Emily and the three children (Carlo, Maria (Mary) and George) came to join Domenico in the Huntly business. As Dom remained a bachelor all his days, he came

to his brother's aid and moved out of Huntly, eventually taking over the Clifton Road shop in Lossiemouth which had been

converted from a butcher's shop into a café by Luigi Zaccharini. Dom soon became one of Lossie's favourite

characters, dispensing with a quiet smile excellent ice cream in summer and hot drinks in winter. To this day the Lossie

Shop still bears the Rizza name.

In 1948 James' daughter Mary married

Rothiemay born Donald Gordon Morrison (known as Gordon), and had a son, Phillp George Morrison, in 1951. When Carlo died in 1965, Mary and Gordon set about helping with the

running of the Huntly shop. In 1971 the family firm moved up a gear and opened a wholesale ice cream business, investing in premises in Upperkirkgate where they stayed for the next 30

years. When James retired, Mary and Gordon ran the Huntly shop, taking note of Philip's views of expanding the business.

With Domenico still in Lossiemouth and Mary and Gordon in Huntly, Philip had plenty of help

from all the family and the future looked very promising. However during 1975 both James

and Domenic passed away months apart. It was then left for Philip to continue running the Upperkirkgate premises, with Mary and Gordon

keeping a close eye on Lossiemouth while running the Huntly Shop. In 1979 Philip married Nora, a primary school teacher. Nora became a director in the firm in 2002 and took responsibility

for Quality Control and British Retail Consortium (BRC) accreditation. Today Rizza's are now based in Huntly's industrial estate with a state of the art purpose built factory. Moving with the

times, the family business has invested in new machinery which has helped produce up to 1500 more litres per hour. In addition to their Italian recipe ice creams and sorbets they also make a

prize winning gold top premium ice cream using Jersey double cream. This was to win the Challenge Cup for the National Ice Cream Alliance Competition in 1997. Rizza's real dairy

ice cream is made using cream supplied by a local dairy, and this too has won numerous awards and cups throughout Rizza's 64 years as members of the Ice Cream Alliance.

Now Philip's elder son Donald has taken the reigns. As a 4th generation member of the Rizza

family, he hopes to continue the work that his great grandfather, his grandfather and father began. Having just completed their 9th BRC Food Safety Inspection, Philip and Nora Morrison

were delighted to be awarded an A grade. Achieving nine consecutive clean sheets is something of a record! Philip and Nora recognise that underpinning the recipe of the

firm’s success is the commitment of their long-serving workforce, and for this they are very appreciative.

To mark their 100th anniversary this year they are launching a ‘Golden Spoon’

competition in early summer. Those lucky enough to find a golden spoon in their 140ml spoon and lid tub will qualify to

win one of the many prizes available (see more details on our

website www.rizza.co.uk).

Looking to the future, this family firm will continue the legacy of manufacturing an award winning quality product and delivering a bespoke service

which meets and exceeds the expectations of their discerning customers.

Buon Appetito!

condition varies a great deal from one person to another and from day-to-day.

Memories of a Friend Instead of our usual gospel article, I

would like through these columns to pay tribute to a dear friend and Christian brother who passed away recently. John Affleck, better known locally as Ian, went home to Heaven

on the 3rd February 2014. A large number from Lossie attended his funeral together with many who came from further afield.

As a young lad Ian came to live and work here in Lossie some 44 years ago. He eventually married and settled down to raise a family of one girl and two boys. A contented family

man; he was further blessed with 7 grandchildren with whom he loved to spend as much time as possible. Ian will be remembered for many

things, but for those of us who knew him well, it will be his unshakeable personal Christian faith. During the years of his stay in Lossie, Ian was an active and leading member of the

Gospel Hall at James St, being involved in many aspects of our gospel outreach during that time. Many reading this article will recall untiring efforts in his younger years in

Sunday School work. Affectionately known as “Uncle Ian”, he was the means of instilling the true Christian message in the hearts and minds of a

generation of boys and girls who frequented our hall. For others who perhaps attended the Sunday evening Gospel Meeting, it might be his

stirring gospel preaching that they remember best. Some of course will know that Ian loved to converse about

his Saviour and could carefully bring the focus of an idle conversation around to his favourite subject! For others who worked with Ian during his business life, it will be his leadership

qualities together with a genuine concern for his staff that made lasting impressions. Making a personal reflection that

probably echoes the thoughts of his fellow members at James St, it is that we will miss his friendship, fellowship and devoted Christian love and care.

Ian loved to share his Christian faith and perhaps not so well known was the extent to which he travelled in preaching engagements, both at home and abroad. Latterly, over a

period of 8 or 9 years, Ian, along with two other preaching colleagues, made extended visits to India. Here he made numerous friends and was instrumental in bringing the gospel

message to many. During regular trips to Canada where his daughter and husband stay, his abilities in preaching and teaching the scriptures

were much in demand and very much appreciated by the Christians in that part of the world.

To my knowledge, Ian’s life’s work was never recounted to any great extent in the obituary columns of our daily ne w s p a pe r s , b u t h i s m a ny

achievements were surely recorded in heaven. His work for the Lord Jesus was full, but it has ended and he has gone on to higher service in Heaven. The few years of earthly labour, which

was rendered with devotion and compassion, has earned an unending reward.

It’s good when we can speak with assurance concerning the life of a believer who knew his Saviour. What if this column was a record of your life and achievements? Do you enjoy the

certainty and assurance that marked Ian’s Christian life and experience? Will you be assured of a welcome in Heaven because there was a day when you trusted Ian’s Saviour for yourself?

Before Ian’s passing he asked that a Gospel tract he’d written some time previous be updated and made available for distribution. “Everybody

needs a Friend” was reprinted but within a few days stocks had run out! It will be printed again, and if any wish to obtain copies, please get in touch through the contact details below and

we’ll be happy to provide copies for further circulation. It was Ian’s desire that everybody would come to know his Friend, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) Explained

Tariff levels and terms for the long-awaited domestic RHI scheme have finally been

announced. The initial proposals for a Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme were made in July 2009 under the previous Government, and the non-domestic scheme started in 2011.

After much change in the RHI, with several consultations, sets of proposals, and reviews

between then and now, this set of final outcomes and tariffs for the domestic scheme provides support for households looking into reducing their regular heating bills through

installing renewable heating systems such as biomass boilers or solar thermal panels.

The scheme commences in Spring 2014 and tariffs are as follows:

Solar Thermal: 19.2p/kWh Ground Source Heat Pumps: 18.8p/kWh Biomass: 12.2p/kWh Air Source Heat Pumps: 7.3p/kWh

The RHI is calculated on the basis of a 7.5% return over 20 years, being paid over a 7 year period. The scheme will cover single domestic dwellings and will be open to owner-occupiers, private landlords, registered providers of social

housing, third party owners of heating systems and self-builders.

What else is required?

Both the product and the installer have to be certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme, or Solar Keymark for solar thermal

products.

All installations require a Green Deal

Assessment to ensure that they have met

Page 21: The lossie local summer 14

Please mention The Lossie Local when responding to ads 21

minimum energy efficiency requirements of loft and cavity insulation.

The property can be on or off the gas grid.

Applications can also be made for a second home.

Applicants for second homes will have to install metering equipment which will measure

the amount of heat used.

If a biomass system is used together with solar

thermal to heat hot water, the RHI can be claimed for both technologies.

The following real figures from some of our customers across the north of Scotland

demonstrate clearly that investing in Renewably Heating pays out:

Victorian Farmhouse with four bedrooms in Aberdeenshire: Annual fuel costs for pellets £2,391 and annual RHI income of £5,846.

30 year old bungalow with three bedrooms in Moray: Annual fuel costs for pellets £1,255 and annual RHI income of £3,069.

New build family home (2014) with four

bedrooms on the Black Isle: Annual fuel costs for pellets £741 and annual RHI income of £1,792.

In addition to the RHI the Scottish

Government offers an interest free loan to help with installation of renewable heating systems:

The interest free loan can cover up to 75% of the total cost, up to £10,000 for Biomass, or £5000 for solar thermal, for the supply and installation of a domestic renewables system. It

is aimed at owner occupiers in Scotland. Repayment periods vary depending on technology and are up to 8 years for solar thermal and up to 12 years for biomass boiler

installations.

Lifeline Lossiemouth F.C.’s local and youth development policies have proved a success this season in that we have achieved more wins than last season. Interest is on the increase and the Social Club is thriving, particularly at weekends.

We now need to continue this improvement both on and off the pitch. To achieve this we need the support of the community. We run a monthly lottery draw named ‘THE LOSSIE

F.C. LIFELINE’. Numbers for the draw will be available at £5 for 2 per month, and will be drawn on the last Sunday of the month. We will pay out at least 50% of our takings, with one big winner and several consolation prizes.

LOSSIEMOUTH FOOTBALL CLUB

Lossiemouth made the long trip to Harmsworth Park to face Wick Academy in the first round of the Breedon Aggregates Highland League Cup, and returned victorious following a stirring performance. Eliot Winter put Lossie ahead in the first half and the Coasters kept their hosts at bay all through the second half before Scott Dunn made sure of progress with a

late penalty.

Cove Rangers made the trip out of the city and headed for the coast, hoping a run of wins late in the season would salvage some pride following their weak

defence of the title, but the Toonsers found Lossie in a stubborn frame of mind and the sides played an entertaining goalless draw. A missed penalty in the second half was as close as Lossie came to opening the scoring, and the sides are scheduled to meet again at Allan Park on the first weekend in May as Lossie’s season comes to a close.

The month of March ended on a sour note for Lossie, as Turriff United visited Grant Park and escaped with all three points following a controversial encounter. Goals in either half had the visitors well ahead before Kevin Flett reduced the deficit with a penalty, but

a late third for Turriff saw the game boil over and Lossie finished with

nine men following the dismissals of Callum Dunbar and Shawn Scott.

The draw for the second round of the Highland League Cup paired Lossie with Huntly, and the Coasters made their second trip of the season to Christie Park looking for a place in the semi-finals. Lossie got off to a flying start, taking a

first half lead through Scott Dunn, and Lossie survived a second half equaliser before Shawn Scott scored the winner to send Lossie into the last four.

Back on league duty, Lossie ventured south to Mackessack Park for their game against Moray rivals Rothes, and a wind-affected game struggled to get going with

neither side coping well in difficult conditions. The second half was much improved on the first and Lossie stole into the lead when Liam Archibald fired home,

but Lossie were denied all three points

when Michael Dunn converted a penalty for Rothes with five minutes left.

At the annual Lossiemouth FC Sportspersons Dinner, the players’ of the year awards were handed out, and Liam Archibald collected the Player’s Player of the Year award, while youngster Ryan Farquhar landed the Supporter’s Player of

The Year gong. Congratulations to both.

Lossie were once again on the road as they took part in the semi-final of the Highland League Cup, this time travelling to Inverness to face Clachnacuddin at Grant Street Park. Lossie’s hopes of reaching their first league cup final since 1996 were raised when Ryan Green scored after only

8 minutes, but Clach fought back to lead midway through the half, and the comeback was complete before the interval as Clach rattled in a third and fourth to win the tie with time to spare. Clach scored another in the second half as they secured

a place in the final against Buckie Thistle, who overcame Inverurie Loco Works in the other semi-final.

The club’s supporters now have their own

internet forum, which is used for discussions on all matters relating to the club and the Press and Journal Highland League. The forum has become very popular with fans throughout the Highland League and contains information on all levels of local football, including local junior, welfare and

women’s clubs and leagues. To sign up and have your say, visit www.fitbanorth.com.

Fixtures for the new season are scheduled to be announced within the coming few weeks. For more details, please keep an

It’s an exciting and busy period

for the Station as significant

changes have occurred to pave the way for the

future of RAF Lossiemouth. The Station sadly said farewell to 12 (Bomber) Squadron and

617 Squadron at the end of March. This, however, is not the end of the ‘Dambusters’ who will

reform in 2018 as the first operational Lightning II aircraft at RAF Marham.

The drawdown of the Tornado fleet marks the beginning of the Station’s focus to supporting Typhoon aircraft operations. RAF Lossiemouth

has already hosted 6 Squadron for Exercise MORAY Venture 1 and 2. The purpose of the Exercise is to test the new operating facilities for

6 Squadron ahead of their arrival in June. A secondary purpose is for RAF Lossiemouth personnel to gain experience and exposure of Typhoon specific operations. The area will

certainly start to notice the new aircraft more and more.

With the arrival of Typhoon aircraft comes the responsibility of Quick Reaction Alert (Interceptor) North (QRA(I) N). This requires Typhoon aircraft to hold high alert to scramble

and intercept unidentified aircraft approaching UK airspace and counter any airborne terrorist threat. Rehearsal for the delivery of QRA(I) N will take place over August with the capability

standing up formally at the end of the Summer.

Not content with all of that, at the beginning of April we also hosted one of the largest Exercise JOINT WARRIORs for 14 years with several maritime patrol aircraft from allied nations. The

Exercise was considered a great success from all involved and showcased the beautiful coastline of Morayshire.

Finally, The Station’s 75th Anniversary was on 1

May and we celebrated by hosting an Annual

Reception for our local dignitaries and selected businesses to thank them for their support over the years. Later in the evening the Station held

Lossiemouth Raft Race 2014 - Time to start planning!

RAF Lossiemouth and Moray Council are once again working together on a popular event in the

Moray calendar. The date for the Lossiemouth Raft Race has been set for Sunday 3 August.

Flight Lieutenant Dave Hapgood is co-ordinating the organising team, “The Lossiemouth Raft Race is a well-known and well-loved event in the calendar for us, and this year I think it will be bigger than ever. We expect a strong team from The Steamboat Inn as they try to win back the trophy

from RAF Lossiemouth’s own MT Section who won in 2013. But there were some other strong teams last year so we expect a good race for the famous trophy this year!”

As well as entrants for the actual race itself, Dave is encouraging any organisations and businesses interested in providing stalls or entertainments to get in touch with the organisers. For more information and the relevant application forms visit the ‘Events’ page on the RAF Lossiemouth web

site (http://www.raf.mod.uk/raflossiemouth/events/index.cfm). Or contact SAC Craig Allen on [email protected] about stalls, or Corporal Lee Craig on [email protected] about team entries. Dave added, “Moray Firth Radio will be broadcasting live from this year’s race, which is being held in aid of two charities, The Make A Wish Foundation and MFR Cash for Kids.

Hopefully everyone will come along and enjoy themselves, as well as supporting these two very worthwhile causes.”

As I sit here writing this article I cannot believe it’s May already and summer is just around the

corner. The GladiatorFit Studio has been open now for over 18months and has been buzzing since. Personal Training, Boot Camps and Circuits have been busy and it has been great to

see everyone achieving their goals. I feel very lucky to have such loyal clients.

So with the summer months fast approaching, don’t think “it’s too late for me to achieve my goal” because the answer is no. Take 5, have a think about your week, your timings and look at

planning some “me time”. If you feel you’re too busy to exercise, often it’s usually just a case of trying to get a good worklife or family balance.

If you’re thinking about getting fit why not get in touch, and we can have a one to one

consultation and plan what’s best for you. Once the initial consultation is done, it’s a great way to find out a bit more about me, the studio, my training principles and answer any questions you

may have regarding yourself and exercise and put any training myths to one side.

One thing I am often told is – “I don’t want to lift weights or weighted equipment because I don’t want to be too bulky”. If only it was that simple,

and this got me thinking about some of the myths that are out there in the fitness industry.

Myths of Weight Training for Woman

Myth 1 – Weight training makes you too bulky.

It is physiologically impossible to just bulk from lifting weights. Testosterone is the reason for muscle bulk, and woman just do not produce enough of this predominantly male hormone.

Strength training will give your muscles a nicer more defined shape. The image that people think of is that of a weight lifter or body building. If it was that simple, they would not have to have

an unbelievable work ethic where they spend hours in the gym perfecting their workout and bodies.

Myth 2 – To see results I need to work each

muscle individually.

It is unnecessary to work your muscles

separately. You actually get a better work out

and will see faster results sooner if you do compound moves. Think squats, lunges, press ups, dips. These multi joint movements actually

burn more calories than single joint exercises. Seeing fitness levels improve quickly will also give you the boost you need to stick with your programme.

Myth 3 – If you stop working out your muscle will

turn to fat.

Fat and muscle are two different substances and

one cannot and will not turn into each other. When you stop using your muscles your body becomes less efficient at burning calories, this in turn allows any weight gain to form as fat. It

does not mean your muscle has turned in to fat.

Myth 4 – You cannot spot reduce with weights.

I have written about this before but it is by far the

most common thing discussed at a consultation. Clients often say they want to lose weight from a certain area of their body. However when losing weight, you cannot encourage it to leave a

certain area first. You can however tone and sculpt areas, but no, weighted ab curls will not give you a six pack if there is excess weight there to lose.

Myth 5 – You need a lot of equipment to build

and tone muscles.

Straight away the answer is no. You do not need every piece of equipment available to build a strong, lean healthy body. You can build the physique you want no matter what equipment

you have. Even if you only have some dumbbells and your body weight to work with you’re ready to start building the body you want.

These are just a few issues I have chosen to talk about; unfortunately in the fitness world there are always myths floating about that confuse and

misguide people. This potentially can put you off trying something new. I am hoping any females out there reading this who thought they would get “too bulky” lifting weights, may just think wait

a minute, maybe this is what I needed to get the body I’ve always wanted.

If anyone would like to come in for a consultation to discuss things further, or have any questions they would like answered, why not give me a call

or email and we can arrange a time to suit you.

Since the last edition of the Lossie Local it has been an exceptionally busy time for the Community Council - and, we hope, a very productive one.

On April 23 we held a second meeting of community groups and associations in the Town Hall, a follow-up to our meeting in November. A result of this is that a new

Community Association will be formed with representatives from the Community Council, Business Association and all interested groups and associations in the town.

The aim of the new Association will be to

represent Lossiemouth in a joined-up approach to facilities and events in the town. The overwhelming feeling is that Lossie needed such an approach to ensure we are in the best possible position to take

advantage of funding opportunities.

It will also place us in a much stronger position to coordinate our joint efforts; through the Association we can channel the extensive skills that exist in the town in ways that are just not possible for

individual groups.

On a similar theme our efforts at establishing a future for the Seatown Bridge has picked up pace and very real progress has now been made. Thanks to

the superb investigative work undertaken by former community councillor Jim Dartnall, we appear to be much closer to establishing ownership of the bridge.

Currently we are awaiting confirmation on the bridge ownership and as soon as that is received we can formulate plans for repairs and ongoing maintenance issues.

The Community Council is also well aware of problems people have reported over the

smell from the Lossiemouth Wastewater Works. One of our community councillors will be visiting the works ahead of our May meeting, while a representative from the treatment works will also attend our meeting to discuss the issue.

Finally for this issue - as part of our 'joined up' community approach we have

introduced an 'events diary'. This is being held in the Library and is open to any group, organisation or individual who is arranging an event in the town. It provides us all with a means of checking for other events already being held so that clashes

might be avoided.

The 4th Lossiemouth Company Boys’ Brigade has had a very successful start to 2014, winning three Moray Battalion competitions in a row.

We took part in the Swimming Gala Competition at

Lossiemouth Swimming Pool, along with boys form Elgin and

Burghead, and took first place. The next competition was the five-a-side football at Lossiemouth Sports

and Community Centre, refereed by SFA referee Robbie Hope. We played in a league winning all our games against Elgin, Burghead and the new

Forres company. Next came the Figure Marching Competition at Hythehill Primary School, where we once again came first.

The competition was judged by former brigade officers Edna Young and Betty Wilson, who spent many years with the boys brigade in charge of the Anchor and Junior sections.

We also attended the Moray Battalion Parade and Church Service on Sunday 2 March at Elgin High Church. We had a good turnout of

boys from Lossiemouth, who were dressed in the armour of God costumes and sang ‘Put on the Armour of God’ at the service.

The 4th Lossiemouth is going from strength to strength, having the biggest anchor boy and junior section in the Moray Battalion. Due to my heart attack I took it a bit easier this session and only had an anchor and junior section, but we hope to start the company section again in

September.

We have recently become part of the United Free Church in Lossiemouth and thank our

chaplain Jim Urquhart and the congregation for all their help and support. We are soon to celebrate our 25th Silver Anniversary in September this year with special celebrations planed.

We meet every Wednesday in Hythehill Primary School at the following times:-

Anchor Boys, Primary 1, 2 & 3, from 5.30pm until 6.30pm.

Junior Section, Primary 4, 5 & 6, from 6.30pm until 8.00pm.

Primary 7 & High School would meet from

Dog fouling in Lossiemouth Over the last few weeks the council have received a number of complaints regarding dog fouling in Lossiemouth. Dog owners are reminded that failure to immediately clean up faeces after your dog is against the law; there is a zero tolerance approach to dog fouling in Lossiemouth and anyone caught will be subject to a penalty of £40. If you are a dog owner you can help by clearing up after your dog. Free dog bags are available from a number of locations throughout Lossiemouth, including the Police Office, Community Centre and various shops.

Dob on a Dog Fouler If you witness dog fouling then we urge you to ‘dob on a dog fouler’; any information that you provide will be acted on. If you wish to remain

anonymous then we can accommodate this, however, it does limit the action that can be taken. In the majority of cases people are aware who is responsible for the fouling but do not report it; thus allowing the fouling to continue and areas to become blighted. If you are aware of someone not clearing up after their dog then please report it so that we can stop it.

Dog fouling can be reported to the Antisocial Behaviour Team on 0800 587 7197 or directly to the Community Warden on 07800 670665.

Thank you for your co-operation.

YOUR INTESTINAL FLORA

The human intestinal tract is a very complex

internal environment. It’s filled with various species of bacteria and yeasts that should assist digestion, kill harmful or pathogenic infections and even help produce many vitamins

and other chemical substances needed for our health and long life. The name given to these organisms that live in our intestines is the intestinal flora.

If you suffer from the following symptoms your intestinal flora may be out of balance:

- Foul-smelling stools - the bowel movements

should not smell bad. They should smell a little like a barnyard, but not overly stinky, putrid or some other smell. - Some bloating and gas.

- Constipation or diarrhoea. - Intestinal pain, at times. - Food sensitivities or food cravings of some kind.

- Subtle signs such as weakness, sleepiness after eating a meal (especially after eating animal proteins), headaches, or other aches and pains.

There are many reasons why your intestinal

flora is out of balance, such as:

Unclean Food. This includes all raw food

unless you thoroughly wash it with water (even pre-washed vegetables) and/or use vegetable washing liquid. Empty Calorie Foods. These are white bread,

white rice, white sugar, soda pop and most prepared restaurant foods. These simply lack the needed vitamins and minerals required for their proper digestion. As a result, they slowly

deplete the body of vitamins and minerals, and damage the intestines in the process. Antibiotic Use. Taking antibiotics, especially

wide-spectrum antibiotics, often destroys the

friendly intestinal flora. This allows other bacteria, viruses, yeasts and parasites to grow in the intestinal tract. Sometimes unfortunately unavoidable, it is a good idea to replenish your

intestinal flora with probiotics after a course of antibiotics. Food Chemicals. Many seemingly harmless

food additives that are in most prepared foods

may irritate the intestines, upset digestion and kill off or damage the friendly or proper intestinal flora. This is especially the case

when these are eaten regularly. The Presence of Toxic Metals and Other Mineral Imbalances. The presence of too

much mercury, in particular, and perhaps

copper, has a very damaging effect upon the intestinal flora in some people. Other minerals exert a protective effect such as zinc, which is commonly deficient in our diets

today.

THE IDEAL WAY TO OPTIMIZE YOUR

GUT HEALTH The ideal balance of beneficial to pathogenic

bacteria in your gut is about 85 percent good bacteria and 15 percent bad. Maintaining this ideal ratio is what it's all about when we're talking about optimizing your gut

health. Historically, people didn't have the same problems with their gut health as we do today for the simple fact that they got large quantities of beneficial bacteria, i.e.

probiotics, from their diet in the form of fermented or cultured foods, which were invented long before the advent of

refrigeration and other forms of food preservation.

You can ferment virtually any food, and every ancient culture has traditionally fermented their foods to prevent spoilage. There are

also many fermented beverages and yoghurts. Quite a large percent of all the foods that people consumed on a daily basis were fermented, and each mouthful

provides trillions of beneficial bacteria - far more than you can get from a probiotics supplement.

Fermenting your own foods is a fairly straightforward and simple process, and can

provide even greater savings.

ORANGEADE KRAUT

This recipe does not use a culture package.

You must add salt with this method to inhibit the growth of bad bacteria and to create an environment that is safe. When you add salt, the good bacteria will dominate and keep out

harmful pathogens. I do believe that using a starter culture has a lot more benefits, but this is a good

method as well, and the health benefits are many.

Ingredients

2 quart canning jars with lids 1 small head of cabbage (about 1 lb)

1 apple unpeeled and cored 1 orange 1 tablespoon of Celtic sea salt

Instructions

1. Remove outer leaves of cabbage.

2. Finely shred cabbage and apple. You can use a food processor or a hand shredder.

3. Add salt to cabbage and apples.

4. Slice orange in thin pieces and place around the outside of the jar, or you can just

layer them in the jar anywhere.

5. Pack cabbage and apples into the jar.

6. Cover with water. Leave 2 to 3 inches in the jar for the kraut to expand. Place a lid on the jar and set in a cool place, out of sunlight for 6 days.

It will expand and bubble. That is the

fermentation and lactic acid developing. If the vegetables climb above the water, open the jar and push down the vegetables under

the water and seal the jar again. When exposed to air, the cabbage will mold if left like that for a while. It won’t hurt anything if it happens, just scoop out the vegetables

above the water and push the other ones down below the water. After 6 days, place in the refrigerator.

They will last at least 9 months or longer in your fridge.

The P7a pupils of Hythehill Primary would like

to say a great big thank you to the two

businesses in Lossiemouth who welcomed

them for a visit recently. We were running

our own mini businesses in school and were

keen to learn as much as we could from

successful businesses in our local community.

Of course pupils always like trips out too!

During our visit to The Harbour Lights we

were immediately impressed by the buzzing

atmosphere and warm welcome we received

from the staff and friendly

customers.

During our

business meeting

with the owner and manager we learned that

running a business is harder than we thought.

Rather than the life of ease we expected the

owner of a successful business to have we actually found that Evelyn worked six days a

week and on her day off she had paper work

to do and tablecloths to iron! We learned

about submitting business plans to the bank

and that making the right amount of stock is

a balancing act. We were surprised to hear

about how weather dependent such a

business was with many cakes and scones

needed for sunny days and the risk of losing

large reservations when the snow falls unexpectedly. Evelyn acknowledged that the

key to the success of Harbour Lights was

having such a hard working staff who worked

very well as a team. We were interested to

look around the kitchen and see what lies

behind the scenes from strict hand washing

routines, separate food storage areas, the

creative chefs and the fancy programmable

Primary

oven! We also very much appreciated the

juice and biscuits made especially for us -

thank you very much!

Mrs Reddy from

Lossiemouth House was

also very speedy in

agreeing to us visiting. This ready welcome was a

reflection of how she ran her business. For

over 30 years (37 in fact) Mrs Reddy has

built up and run a very busy B&B. When not

directly looking after her customers she is

often touring local places of interest to gain

up-to-date knowledge to pass on to her

visitors. Again we were surprised at how

hard working our local business people are.

It’s a very early start, you’ve to keep abreast of the large change in interests and

needs of clients taking place through the

years and now advertising through a well

maintained website is important. We were

fascinated by the map which tracked how

far and wide visitors had travelled from.

Mrs Reddy has also tried to think of little

touches to keep her visitors interested like

hanging poems in the dining room for people to read at breakfast and having

commissioned placemats with pictures of

Lossiemouth House on them. It was

interesting to hear about the history of the

house and see the original well. The fun

packed bag of treats each child received

was a lovely surprise and showed just how

thoughtful Mrs Reddy is with her visitors.

We learned a tremendous amount through

our trip around Lossie and now recognise

the hard working ethic that is required to

be successful in life. We have many dreams

and ambitions in P7a and we are slowly beginning to believe our teacher that

achieving these ambitions takes a very

healthy dose of the right attitude and a

great deal of effort. A big thank you again!

Team RAFBF Lossiemouth are a group of volunteers who fundraise for

the RAF Benevolent Fund locally. The

RAFBF receives no government funding, so any money raised is really greatly appreciated and very much needed in order for them to continue to provide emotional, practical and

financial support to the serving and ex-serving RAF family, past and present.

This year Team RAFBF Lossiemouth has

some great fundraising challenges that are being organised by local fundraisers. In June there will be a team of hardy walkers trekking up Ben Nevis, and we would like to extend our thanks and wish them all the very best for their adventure!

Jack Yardley, Dave Thorne, Mark Ratcliffe and Andy Reid are the “RAF Way Round” and will be travelling to thirty nine RAF bases on

their motorbikes in September; covering 2,500

miles across Britain in just one week. The challenge will be covered in the media through the RAF Benevolent Fund and the team are looking for local

sponsors to help them on their adventure. They would be thrilled to hear from any companies who are interested.

As well as this, we are looking for runners who would like to take part in the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon or 10k to raise funds for the

RAFBF.

Ness Marathon, please call Karen on:

Dr Ewen Riddick In June 2014 Dr Ewen Riddick leaves the Practice to take up a new role as a GP in Buckie. He moved into the area in 1998 to take his up his post as a GP Partner after working abroad for a number of years; he and his expanding family quickly

made the area home. He will be missed by his patients and colleagues alike. During his time at the Moray Coast Medical Practice he will be remembered for his tireless dedication and hard work to negotiate and secure funding, as well as his part in the design and construction of the Medical Centre building that we will all enjoy for many years to come. We wish him well.

Other News A very grateful thank you to those families who have donated funds to the Moray Coast Medical Practice for equipment as a legacy for their family member. The Practice has been touched by people’s thoughtfulness at a very difficult time. The funds will be used to buy additional equipment allowing us to loan equipment such as nebulisers and blood pressure monitors to patients.

Breast screening is available for all women between 50 and 70 years of age, on a three yearly basis. The breast screening unit will be in the Medical Centre car park for around 6 weeks over the summer months. Patients will receive appointments from the breast screening unit in due course. Patients over the age of 70 can request a screening test by contacting the unit on 01224 550570.

Bowel Screening is available for all patients aged between 50 and 64 years of age on a two yearly basis. Patients will be sent screening kits in the post from the bowel screening unit or they can be contacted on 0800 0121 833.
