Doesn’t it seem like it was just yesterday when spring starting peeking out in the garden? And, here we are getting close to the end of the calendar year with the garden tucked in for the winter.
But, that doesn’t mean that our Foundation work is done.
Cabin Fever is just around the corner! March 30, 2019, will be here before you know it. The Cabin Fever team is hard at work making this 10th anniver-sary event very special. We have a great line up of speakers, interesting vendors, fun raffle items, used books for sale, and a wide assortment of succulents for sale so that you can get your green fix started early. If you know someone who would love to come to Cabin Fever, consider paying for their registration as a Christmas present. Or, you could gift yourself! You can do so, by going to www.mgfsc.org.
Thank you to everyone who voted in our Board of Directors election. We used electronic ballots this year for the first time and it was slick! 75% of you voted! Welcome to new BOD members, Amy Finkel and Susan Goar. Welcome back to re-elected directors, Cathi Lamoreux and Linda Racicot.
The 2019 BOD members are: Connie Curtin, Jill Ferguson, Amy Finkel, Susan Goar, Cathi Lamoreux, Susan Purdom, Linda Racicot, Nancy Sazama, Tim Stiess, Matt Velasco, and Dorene Wade.
Sue Malm has finished her BOD term. She has served with such generosity of her time, wisdom, and goodwill. We will miss her as she moves on to other MG activities.
Keep your eyes open for a new opportunity! The BOD wrote and approved a new policy that will allow us to fund educational opportunities for active MGs and Program staff. We will be gearing up in January to finalize the details. If you have your eye on an ap-proved continuing education class or conference, then we will try to help you get there! More info will be available in 2019.
I have participated in several programs including the Soils Committee, Youth Program, maintenance of the demonstration beds, Garden Tour Committee and sale of ornamental grasses at Garden Fair. I have also been a speaker and taught classes for the Program.
My goal in joining the Program Board will allow me to help find ways to support the program staff.
Jane Beaven (Class of 2010)
I grew up in Missouri with gardening parents so was involved in the work of maintaining a garden from a young age. In fact, my first paying job was picking tomato worms off plants for a penny apiece. Since that early start, I've been a gardener at heart and have managed to grow things most everywhere I've been. For the past 30 years my husband and I have lived on 20 acres north of Chattaroy, grown vegetables and berries, fought noxious weeds, planted native plants, and practiced every water sparing strategy we can think of.
I worked as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Eastern State Hospital for 20 years and when I retired I discovered the Spokane County Master Gardeners and joined their efforts in 2010. I have certainly enjoyed the peo-ple in this organization, the clients we serve, and the opportunity to provide science-based education to the community. I believe serving on the Master Gardener Program Board would be an additional way that I might help this organization. I look forward to the opportunity to help guide the program into the future.
Dan Mueller (Class of 2014)
I have enjoyed my years as a Master Gardener, learning more all the time through time in the Plant Clinic
and various continuing education opportunities. I spent three summers working with the Riverfront Farms
Community Garden group, assisting youth with planning, preparing and growing vegetables for sale at local
markets. This past spring, I assisted with youth programs in the School Express Program.
My wife and I enjoy working in our yard and garden west of Medical Lake.
I look forward to helping the MG Program on this new committee.

SUE MALM (Class of 2006)
I became a Master Gardener after retiring from teaching Microbiology, Biology, and Human Anatomy and Physiology at Spokane Community College for over 20 years. I have worked, and continue to work, in the Youth Program since 2006, and I am currently the lead. I served on the Master Gardener Program Board of Directors from 2008 to 2011 where I was active in revising the Board by-laws. I be-came a Plant Clinic Specialist in 2008 and continue to serve in that capacity. In 2008, I helped Penny Simonson write the original edition of the “How to Work the Clinic” notebook, and I have reviewed and rewritten several Master Gardener county fact sheets. I have served on the Soils Committee and currently serve on the Kind Works Committee. I have been actively involved in the Master Gardener Open House/Garden Fair since 2006, first in the Kids’ Activity Area and then as lead for the Herb Booth. I am currently a member of the Foundation and, with Claudia Myers, Denise Eaton, and Mary Beth Shinn, helped write our application to the IRS for the Foundation’s 501 (c) (3) status. I have just finished a three-year term on the Foundation’s Board of Directors where I served on the Liaison and Policy/Bylaws Committees. Being on the Founda-tion Board has helped me understand how the Foundation supports the Program. I hope that my or-ganizational and writing skills can make a contribution to the functioning of the Program Board.
Donna Pickens (Class of 2015)
I have enjoyed being in the Youth Program, and I also have been involved in farmer’s market booths
and Dig Gigs. The one thing I enjoy most is working in the Plant Clinic, because of the learning as you
try to get the answers for clients. I would like to be on the Board because I would learn more about
the inner workings of the Master Gardener Program and it would be a chance to get more involved
and do some good things.
Karla Sherry (Class of 2015)
I have been a PCS since 2016. I have served on various committees including the Pollinators and the rock garden construction. I have volunteered every year at the Plant Fair and helped with Dig Gigs getting plants for the fair. I would like to help the Board refine the program so that it works efficiently and effectively.
