Peter Manthei overlooked the institutional research and development department at Luna Community College over the last four years. He is retiring at the end of the month.
What is your fondest memory while working here at Luna Community College?
I don't really have a "fondest memory" but have enjoyed working with people at the college. Most have been helpful and supportive of what I have been trying to do. I did enjoy working on the Foun-dation Golf Tournament.
What are you most proud of while working at Luna Community College?
Establishing a "snapshot' data archive for each semester based on data files submitted to the New Mexico Higher Educational Department.
What do you feel is the strongest point Luna Community College has going for it?
Most employees seem dedicated to helping our students and making the educational process as smooth and enjoyable as possible.
What does Luna Community College need to work on to become a premier community college? A more directed, focused approach toward making improvements. Not trying to
tackle everything at once. Using data to decide priorities on improvements.
Community members enjoy an evening of Zumba Fitness at LCC's Gerald Or-tega Wellness Center. By the fall semester it is hopeful Zumba fitness will be a credit-bearing course in LCC's Humanities Department. In the photo at right, LCC nursing student Loriann Garcia takes time to enjoy the rigors of Zumba fitness. Zumba was introduced during summer break to LCC as part of the Community Education division. Classes at the main campus continue through June 29. Zumba classes in Santa Rosa are projected to start June 16.

Valley Schools receive books

Financial aid news: College tuition reality check The 'How America Pays for College Survey,' which is based on last
year's freshman class, found that mom and dad continue to be the No.1 source of college funding with 37 percent of parents saying they will use both savings and current income to help cover costs, Fox Busi-ness reports.
The survey also found 23 percent of students received financial help in the form of grants and scholarships. Student loans account for another 14 percent and roughly 1 out of 10 students is using personal savings and money earned from working. One surprise: The most re-
cent survey found an increase in financial help coming from family and friends.
Attention grandparents, aunts, uncles and anyone else wishing to help, instead of writing a check to the student, make it out directly to the college. No matter what the amount, you won't have to file a gift tax return and your contribution won't count against your lifetime gift-ing limit, which currently sits at $5 million.

from Luna Community College course offer-ings at Wagon Mound High School. The con-venience of taking courses within the commu-nity is what brings the students back semester after semester.
Luna Community College has made signifi-
cant strides in addressing student needs in the small community. For years Wagon Mound went un-served but now that Luna Commu-nity College has established itself in the com-munity, students are once again participating in courses.
Vocational courses and more specifically the Furniture and Cabinet courses are very
popular in Wagon Mound. Students become familiar with safety requirements for use of the tools and have created amazing pieces of work.
In addition to the vocational courses, high school students participate in dual credit courses that provide them the opportunity to gain college credit while still in high school.

Luna Community College With hectic work schedules, family respon-
sibilities, and social engagements, there just doesn't seem to be enough time for everything we need and want to do. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. There are things you can do to help manage your time and learn how to work smarter and not harder.
The first step in learning how to manage your time is to develop a general work sched-ule. Your work schedule should include time for yourself as well as time for the mainte-nance of your business.
After you've defined the major elements of your workload, the next step is to prioritize them by identifying critical deadlines, routine maintenance items, and fun/relaxation time. Answering questions like "How much time do I have to make this decision, finish this task, or contact this person?" will help you to start identifying what needs to be done immediately versus what can wait. Setting priorities de-pends on deadlines, how many people you must call to get the information you need, and whether you can delegate or get assistance from others. If you are involved in group pro-jects, reserve additional time for communica-tion and problem-solving.
Once you have identified your priorities, look at all of your options for achieving them. Evaluate and move forward with the ones you feel are the most useful for you. The only time to consider changing approaches mid-task is when you know the change will save time. If you are in doubt, it is usually best to consider
in the direction you started. By setting up your work schedule and iden-
tifying your priorities, you have already started down the road to more effective time manage-ment. Other time management suggestions you may find useful for managing both your business life as well as your personal life in-clude the following:
Contract out tasks. Contract out tasks you do not have the expertise to complete. Your client will appreciate your honesty and effort to get the best result.
Start with the most worrisome task. Start the morning, afternoon, or evening with the most worrisome task before you. This will reduce your anxiety level for the next task.
Complete deadline work early. Not only will this reduce stress and lighten your work schedule, but it will also give you more self-confidence about managing your schedule.
Know your capacity for stress. When you are hitting overload, take the break you need (even if it is a short one) when you need it.
Stay organized. Take time at the end of each day to briefly organize your desk and make reminder lists of tasks for the next day or week.
Take advantage of "down time.” Allow yourself some "down time" between busy periods to review your schedule and reevaluate your priorities.
Get physical. Physical exertion such as walking, bicycling, swimming, or organized sports activities helps to discharge stress.
Stretching, yoga, jumping rope, sit-ups, playing with children, or doing yard work are other types of therapeutic breaks you should con-sider during times of stress.
Have fun. Be sure to have some fun while working or playing; a good sense of hu-mor can keep most problems in perspective.
Divide up your time. Decide how much time to spend on business development, personal needs, volunteerism and family. Start by allowing 25 percent of your time for your-self. Each time you make a commitment, set a timeline for your involvement. Remember that maintenance takes at least 25 percent of the time you spend on any project whether it's business, marriage, or serving on the board of a non-profit organization.
Don't underestimate the toll that emotional stress takes on your physical health and your ability to concentrate on your work or enjoy time with your family. Make sure you have time for the important people and events in your life.

Making time for what’s important
LCC—tuition cost among the lowest Sometimes columnists try to come up with a clever line to open up their story. I really don’t think this is necessary for the mes-
sage I’m trying to get across. So I’m going to just come out and say it—Luna Community College’s tuition rate is among the lowest in the en-
tire state. Even with the recent tuition increase approved by the LCC Board of Trustees, our $35 a credit hour for in-district students starting in the fall, is still very, very, very affordable.
Last week, I called 17 community colleges in the state (including Northern New Mexico College) and talked either to someone in admis-sions, their fiscal office or other school personnel about their rates.

Our tuition this summer is $33 a credit hour, so we are right there with NMJC.
New Mexico State-Carlsbad is at $39 while Santa Fe Community College is at $39.50.
Clovis Community College is at $42 a credit hour while San Juan College is at $43. Central New Mexico, Mesalands and Northern New Mexico College are all right around $44.
New Mexico State-Doña Ana is at $57 while UNM-Los Alamos is at $60. UNM-Grants is at $62 while UNM-Valencia is at
$65.05. UNM-Taos is at $69.10 and UNM-Gallup is at $71. New Mexico State-Alamogordo is at $76.
If I am incorrect in any of these numbers please send me an e-mail and I will gladly do a follow-up.
But back to the original focus—community colleges in New Mexico are very affordable and Luna Community is in this mix. Keep in mind that attending community col-leges have many advantages—one of the big-gest is cost.
In other news mark Saturday, Aug. 27 on your calendar. This will our Foundation’s An-nual Golf Tournament. Our foundation does a wonderful job of raising money and the golf tourney is a major part of that. You can see an
ad on page 3 for more information. I want to wish all our Luna Community
College students that will be competing at the SkillsUSA National Competition later in mid-June good fortune. Our students usually do well. It would be nice to see a top 10 finish this year. Keep in mind that the best of the best of each state will be represented.
Don’t forget about our annual car show coming up on Saturday, June 11. Anthony Baca, one of our collision repair instructors, is leading the way on this. This will be the second consecutive year it will be held on the college campus. This is a good way to showcase our college. Last year we had close to 1,000 people attend this event.
