December 2013 The Reverend Jennifer Obermueller, Pastor St. Paul Lutheran Church • 721 Twelfth Avenue • Huntington, WV 25701 • 304-525-9630 www.stpaulhuntington.org Advent begins December 1 and continues through the afternoon of December 24. Advent is the perfect opportunity to find a quiet center in the midst of life and often hectic activity. During Advent you will see and hear signs of anticipation and hope at St. Paul: Blue paraments and candles, signs of light in the midst of darkness and the coming of Christ the Light of the World; Advent carols and hymns, songs of anticipation and hope from many traditions around the world; Wreaths and Advent candles, signs that mark time and tell us not only that Christmas is coming, but that all time is blessed by Christ’s coming to us with his promises; The Kyrie, Sunday prayer of the day, and a service of evening prayer on Wednesdays all beseeching God to have mercy, stir up the divine power, and come!; Evergreen boughs and eventually a tree, signs of life in the midst of a world that often believes death has the last word. Such symbols are likely to appear in your home, as well. Whether they are Advent candles (four--one lit for each week of Advent) or Christmas trees, festive symbols at this time of the year point us to Christ: the Light of the World, the Tree of Life, Immanuel--the God for whom we wait. THE LUTHERAN VISITOR

The Reverend Jennifer Obermueller, Pastor

St. Paul Lutheran Church • 721 Twelfth Avenue • Huntington, WV 25701 • 304-525-9630

Advent begins December 1 and continues through the afternoon of December 24. Advent is the perfect opportunity to find a quiet

center in the midst of life and often hectic activity.

During Advent you will see and hear signs of anticipation and hope at St. Paul:

Blue paraments and candles, signs of light in the midst of darkness and the coming of Christ the Light of the World;

Advent carols and hymns, songs of anticipation and hope from many traditions around the world;

Wreaths and Advent candles, signs that mark time and tell us not only that Christmas is coming, but that all time is blessed by

Christ’s coming to us with his promises;

The Kyrie, Sunday prayer of the day, and a service of evening prayer on Wednesdays all beseeching God to have mercy, stir up

the divine power, and come!;

Evergreen boughs and eventually a tree, signs of life in the midst of a world that often believes death has the last word.

Such symbols are likely to appear in your home, as well. Whether they are Advent candles (four--one lit for each week of Advent)

or Christmas trees, festive symbols at this time of the year point us to Christ: the Light of the World, the Tree of Life, Immanuel--the

God for whom we wait. Join us for worship this Advent and at Christmas this December.

SOCIAL MINISTRY NEWS

The purpose of the St. Paul Social Ministry Committee is to serve those in need, both in and outside our

congregation. If you know of needs, or if you would like to help, please let Pastor Jennifer, Linda Schneider,

or Anna Mummert know.

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I

was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, …” Matthew 25: 35 & 36

November saw the beginning of our Christmas service project of delivering food baskets to local neighbors

in need. Our list of recipients is provided by Information & Referral Service, located in the Cabell County

Library.

Food donations are going extremely well so far! Thank you for your enthusiastic support! Please check

the weekly food list, and keep it coming, if you’re able. Without you, Social Ministry could not undertake

this yearly project. If you prefer to donate money, please place it in the offering plate, marked “food baskets”.

Monies will be used to purchase perishable items at the time of delivery.

In the midst of extra food collections for Christmas, our Food of the Month donations to Cridlin are down a

bit. We collected 31 cans of beef stew in November. December’s food is canned tuna.

Social Ministry Committee will meet on Sunday, December 8, after Sunday School, about 11:35.

EVERYONE IS INVITED to help us plan shopping for and delivery of the baskets, which will take place

Sunday, December 22.
