Dear Friends,
2019 has arrived: I hope that, even if you didn’t celebrate its dawning with
family, friends and/or fireworks, it will be a year filled with blessings both hoped
for and unexpected.
The Queen’s New Year Honours list was duly revealed, with the media bringing
to our attention those who are already in the public eye: actors, sports stars
etc. The details to which I am always drawn, however, are in the small print,
usually without accompanying photos. I love to know of those men and women
throughout the country who, in their paid employment or voluntary activity, have
made a meaningful difference in their community.
Their talents and interests may be miles apart, but the common thread which
binds them together is their passion. That passion may be to improve the life of
a particular group of people, such as young adults with learning difficulties; or it
may be a cause, like healthy eating. Whoever or whatever that passion is, it
drives the individual to do the best that they can, and I doubt that anyone
honoured by Her Majesty set out with the aim of attaining three capital letters
after their surname.
Those so honoured, of course, are nominated by others rather than self-
referred, and it undoubtedly gives us pleasure to find in that all-important small
print the name of someone we know, because we believe that they truly
deserve royal recognition.
The Kirk has its system of “long service certificates”, a good number of which
we recently presented in St Andrew’s. Length of service is perhaps one of the
easier ways in which to gauge the right time for an award, and anyone who
remains faithful and hard-working in a congregational role is definitely worthy of
recognition. That is not the end of the matter, however, for individual
circumstances may make long service an impossibility. Think, for instance, of
employment or family responsibilities which curtail the time available for other
things, especially when coupled with unpredictability.
In the Church we should be able to find the right kind of “job” to suit each
member’s talents and available time. This is certainly the sort of thing being

written nowadays about the eldership. Or, to put it another way, whether we are
talking about elders or not, we shouldn’t try to put “square” members into
“round” areas of congregational life.

We still collect used stamps for the World Mission
Stamp Appeal. We have a box on the shelving at the
end of the St Andrew’s Hall, so please bring any stamps
along and pop them in the box, or give them to me.
It is really important to remember to leave a half
inch margin around the stamp, as if the perforations are damaged
then the stamp is worthless.
Many thanks for your continued support.

Wednesday 12th June
Wednesday 18th September
Wednesday 4th December
Tea/coffee from 6.45pm,
meeting starts at 7.30pm
Prayer Eternal God
Creator, Son and Spirit
At the start of this brand new year
with your help
we would let go of the past
We would lay down our failures, guilt and shame,
lift up our eyes to your merciful gaze
and look, with faith and hope, to the future
All-knowing and All-forgiving God
May your grace strengthen our resolve to make this a memorable year
enlighten our minds to encompass the hopes of other people
and open our hearts to your purpose for us all
Father
Scripture says that we are set free from our sins
by the blood of your beloved Son
Through his sacrifice, we are made a royal house to serve you as your priests
Thank you, Lord God, for the gift of Jesus Christ
through whom we are made new, for this new year
so that we may bring the glory to your name
through that same Jesus Christ
Amen

‘Wow!’ was the general reaction from the girls when they entered
the church at the beginning of December. For the majority of them,
this was their first time inside the church. There to
meet them was Rev Caroline Taylor who pointed out and
explained the use of many of the features inside the church
before talking to them about the season of Advent. The girls
thoroughly enjoyed exploring the church and hunting for the
nativity figures Caroline had hidden.
The rest of December was mostly spent on Christmas activities
– making cards and filling the snowmen, which Marilyn had
crafted out of yoghurt tubs, with sweets to give to those
attending the afternoon tea and fellowship service. The girls
also made stars to go on the church tree.
We finished the month with a party when a wide variety of games were played
and lots of food eaten. There was also a visit from Santa Claus who received
lots of cuddles from the girls.

Many thanks to all who donated to my fundraising for the Sleep in the Park
event. My final total was £570 (including gift aid), and the total raised across
Scotland was over £3 million!
Social Bite, which organised the event, will be using this money for a range of
projects to help homeless people off the streets, including house building and
a comprehensive range of 'wraparound' support services to address some of
the other issues which individuals face in trying to get back on their feet.
I will put regular updates in the Wyvern as Social Bite release more details of
where the money is going, particularly in regard to our own city, so you can
follow the work which your generous donations have made possible.

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among
the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
Psalm 46:10
Thanks must go to those who were responsible for the beautifully decorated
Christmas trees. Fiona Battles, with the help of family members, made a
fantastic job of it. Decorated only by white lights and stars, many of which
carried wishes and hopes for loved ones and the future, the overall effect was
stunning.
Thanks must also go to Steve James who for a number of years has willingly
used his van to transport the large tree from Templeton to the church.
Above all, we must once more acknowledge the generosity of Bill Dryden who
donated both trees.

The retiring collections at our Christmas services, the
PowerPoint greetings, the Christmas stars and the
collection at Cafe Church raised a total of £300 which
will be divided equally between Capability Scotland,
Dundee, and SSAFA, Dundee and Angus Branch.
Many thanks to everyone who donated in anyway.
The Finance Team
The retiring collection for Dundee Foodbank, taken jointly by St Andrew’s and
Meadowside St Paul’s at the Christmas Eve
service, raised £173.50.
Many thanks to everyone who contributed to this
and to Meadowside St Paul’s for arranging the
collection.

2009 – Our interim moderator, the Rev Leslie Barrett, on the first Sunday
of the New Year quoted from M Louise Haskin’s poem ‘The Gates of the
Year’ during his sermon. “Go out into the darkness and put your hand in
the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than Light and safer than a known
way.” And for St Andrew’s - though we cannot know what lies ahead, we can be
hopeful about the future in the knowledge that we have the Word and the promised
presence of the God to accompany us.
1999 – The Girls’ Brigade spent much of December practising their presentation
“Rock around the Flock”. This version was seen through the eyes of the shepherds
and reminded us all that Jesus grew up to be known as the Good Shepherd.
1989 – The Bible Class at Camperdown Church where Mr Petrie is Interim
Moderator, once expressed a wish to him to experience an ‘old church’. Where
better than St Andrew’s. So on 4th Dec 1988, our Bible Class played host to eight
youngsters from Camperdown accompanied by Mr Stewart Sellars, when they
compared the old with the new and we took another look at our own beautiful
surroundings. Our Bible Class hoped to visit Camperdown Church in the New Year.
1979 – Eva Carnegie reported the Sunday school party went well with 60 children
attending. A Christmas model of the church was presented which lit up when the
Christmas tree lights were switched on.
1969 - Two changes to the Board of Officers’ in our Boys’ Brigade Company took
place at the end of the year. Mr J. M. Telfer a member since boyhood resigned due
to work commitments with Goodfellow and Stevens where he was a baker for many
years and Mr Gordon Davidson, a founder member of the Junior Section in 1956/57
and member of the pipe band had resigned to take up an engineering career in the
merchant navy with the Bibby Line. Both officers were presented with suitable gifts
in appreciation of their services to the Brigade.
1959 – John Matthew, editor of the Wyvern, wrote “Christmas eve 1958 will long be
remembered for the densest fog the city has known for many years. Despite the fog
and ice, the church was full for the watch night service with over 1,100 present”.
Rev T.R.S. Campbell conducted the service and as the lights went out one by one
the singing of ‘Silent Night’ greeted the new day.
1949 – Former St Andrew’s minister, Dr R F V Scott celebrated his semi-jubilee in
the ministry in London. Four members, R P Williamson, Harry Gow, Miss Christian
Bisset and W E Reid travelled to London to represent St Andrew’s at this
gathering on Saturday night followed by Sunday worship at the Jehangir Hall of the
Imperial Institute. Note: Dr Scott’s church St Columba’s Pont Street had been
bombed during the war

On the 4th December we had our Christmas Afternoon Tea and
Carol Service which was conducted by Rev Caroline Taylor. We also
had several members from Meadowside St Pauls visiting us which
was wonderful. It was a very enjoyable afternoon and thanks again
to Rev Caroline Taylor for taking this service.
This year the Sunday Seekers have been supporting the Foodbank so the
Guild members were asked to bring along an item for the Foodbank. The
response was great with the collection box overflowing, thank you all for your
contributions.
On the 11th December 16 members went to the Invergowrie Inn for Christmas
Lunch. Once again the meal was enjoyed by all.
On 22nd January we have Gillian Molloy talking on Street Names and on the 5th
February Hugh Henderson will talk about Haiti.
We hope everyone has had a lovely Christmas and wish everyone a very
Happy New Year. We look forward to seeing you in 2019.

Can you spare a pair of socks for a homeless person this winter?
The charity Forgotten Feet provides foot care services for those living on the
streets in Dundee and elsewhere, and is collecting new pairs of socks to give
out.
Please bring them to church or contact Ruth Irons for collection, and they will
be passed on to Forgotten Feet.

The young people in the Sunday Seekers would like to say a big thank you to
all the members of the congregation who continue to support the weekly
collections for Dundee Foodbank. This has been a huge success throughout
2018 and we plan to continue it throughout the coming year. Items always in
demand at the Foodbank include UHT milk, tinned meals, tinned desserts/
fruit, tinned meat/fish, biscuits, pasta/pasta sauces.
A special thank you to the members of the Guild who donated a huge
amount, including Christmas goodies, during their Christmas Carol Service.
We would also like to draw attention to the Give Box that is
now in place in the St Andrew’s Hall, taking donations of
clothing, shoes and household goods.
This is an initiative run by the Gate Church and aims to
re-use items that may otherwise go to waste - these are
then re-used to help local people in need.
Thank you in advance for your support in the coming year.

I’d like to apologise for any upset or distress that may have been caused by my typing

The Flower Committee once again wish to thank everyone for their help
throughout the year.
Firstly the donors of the flowers which are displayed within the Church every
Sunday they are much appreciated by recipients after the Sunday Service.
Monetary donations received during the year are put to good use for flowers
on many occasions.
Secondly assistance we receive with preparations for the three gift services
throughout the year, and deliveries thereafter by volunteers from the
congregation who, along with the flower committee, give freely of their time to
ensure that this is carried out so successfully.
Lastly Muriel and I would like to personally thank the members of the Flower
Committee for all their hard work throughout the year.
