August 22 • XIAN – BEIJINGTransit to the airport and board ourmorning flight to Beijing.

Upon arrival, we explore the Temple ofHeaven, one of the finest creations of theMing Dynasty.

Next, enjoy a walking/shopping tour ofthe newly redeveloped Qianmen district.This emporium was designed on the traditional storefronts that once madethis area the heart of Beijing cultural andcommercial life.

Later, check in the Beijing CapitalHotel.

Then, admire the new National GrandTheater, lovingly dubbed the “Big Egg.”

This evening, savor the imperial city’smost famous delicacy, Peking duck, at therenowned Da Dong Restaurant.

After dinner, we’ll stroll to nearbyTiananmen Square or Wangfujing street.(L,D)_______________________________Breakfast (B), Lunch (L) and Dinner (D) are includedin the day’s program.

August 23 • BEIJINGThis morning, we enter the gate of theimmense complex known as theForbidden City, the abiding symbol ofimperial China. Marvel at its expansivearchitecture, magnificent imperial gardens, and many museums of Chineseantiquities and treasures.

In the afternoon, visit the SummerPalace, the astounding imperial pleasuregarden built in 1888 and laid out on agrand scale.

We’ll have the opertunity to learn howChinese cloisonné is made.

Then, tour the new stadiums madefamous by the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the“Bird’s Nest” and “Water Cube.”

This evening is at leisure you maychoose to explore the Legation District fordinner on one’s own. (B,L)

August 24 • BEIJING

An optional early–morning walk toChangpuhe Park offers an opportunity toobserve local residents practicing taiji andqigong.

Then, explore Beijing’s picturesqueHouhai district, where well-preserved

courtyard homes and narrow hutongalleys border tree-lined lakes. We divideinto small groups and enjoy lunch at thehomes of local families.

In the afternoon we head north fromBeijing for the Great Wall of China. As isusually the case, the Great Wall presents avisual experience that dramaticallyexceeds visitors’ expectations.

If time allows, we visit “Silk Alley,” ashopping center wildly popular withBeijing expatriates for its high quality silkproducts at amazingly cheap prices.

After dinner there will be a PekingOpera performance, always an audiencefavorite. (B,L,D)

August 25 • BEIJINGThis morning is free for personal exploration. An optional visit is availableto Yonghegong, the lama temple in northBeijing. The giant statue of Guanyin isthe largest wood sculpture in the worldand well worth the effort to see.

August 22 • XIAN – HANGZHOUToday we fly to Hangzhou and check inthe Shangri-la Hotel on West Lake.Hangzhou is the most idyllic ancient cityin China.

First, explore Guozhuang Garden, anunusually well-preserved family manorfeaturing magnificent pavilions and gardens. Stop by the lovely QuyuanfenghePark and continue our walking tour on thefamous Su Causeway.

Before dinner, tour the grand architec-tural compound of the Qing Dynasty mer-chant, Hu Xueyan. (L,D)_______________________________Breakfast (B), Lunch (L) and Dinner (D) are includedin the day’s program.

August 23 • HANGZHOUIn the morning we tour Huagang Park,sauntering among its exotic trees, flowers,and fish ponds.

Visit the National Silk Museum followed by an exploration of MaojiawuTea Plantation. Meet with tea farmerswho continue cultivating the famouslongjing tea. Later, visit the Buddhist

Lingyin Temple, one of the grand templesof China today.

We end the day with a sunset boatcruise to the elegant Santanjingyue Isle inthe middle of the West Lake.

August 24 • SUZHOUAfter breakfast travel to Suzhou–a threehour drive. It is also the heart of southChina’s traditional garden culture, knownfor its elegance and sophistication. Uponarrival, check in the Sofitel Hotel.

Enjoy the Humble Administrator’sGarden with its countless pavilions offer-ing views onto lakes and greenery.

Not to be missed is I. M. Pei’s latest cre-ation, the new Suzhou Museum.

After lunch visit Lingering Garden,Suzhou’s most famous garden, with itseccentric architecture and winding paths.If time allows, visit the Suzhou embroi-dery Institute to learn of this marvelousartwork.

Then listen to the evocative traditionalmusic in the many pavilions of Master ofthe Nets Garden. (B,L,D)

August 25 • SHANGHAIAfter breakfast, drive to Shanghai andcheck in the Shanghai Central Hotel.

Then go to Yuyuan Gardens, designedin six unique parts, making the gardenseem much larger than it really is.

Next we explore Xintiandi—a stylishrestaurant and shopping district. Enjoydinner on one’s own. (B,L)

August 26 • SHANGHAIWe divert ourselves among the wonderfulcollections of the Shanghai Museum.

Then, step into new China at thePudong Economic Zone, with its spectacu-lar skyscrapers reshaping the horizon.

Lunch is at the fabulous Lu Bo LangRestaurant.

We’ll enjoy a spectacular bird’s-eye viewof Shanghai from the 100th floor observa-tory deck of the Shanghai World FinancialCentre. After dinner, we’ll stroll along theBund, viewing the beautifully illuminatedcolonial buildings along the HuangpuRiver. (B,L,D)

TERMS & CONDITIONSTRAVEL IN CHINA

China’s tourism industry has improved dramaticallyover the last decade. However, air and land transporta-tion and other facilities may not always meet interna-tional standards. In addition, your hosts want to showyou as much of their country as possible, so the sched-ule will be demanding with moderate physical activity.Travel in China requires good physical condition andhealth (special needs must be arranged for in advanceand may result in additional costs), a spirit of adven-ture, a flexible attitude and a sense of humor. The itiner-ary is subject to change and modification. Every effortwill be made to carry out the program as planned, butalterations may still occur. Participants should be awarethat no refunds will be made as a result of unforeseenchanges, modifications, or delays.

MEALSChina offers a wide variety of dining experiences andthis program will take advantage of a broad range ofChinese food including Shanghai, Hunan, Sichuan,Canton, and Imperial regional cuisines. Special diets arenot possible, except to the extent one picks and choosesfrom the many dishes served.

CONDITIONSReservations: Bookings are subject to the terms andconditions mentioned in these sections. A contract hasbeen entered into as soon as your booking is receivedand accepted. To confirm the reservation, please fill outthe reservation form and submit full payment, either bycheck or credit card.

Air: Please note that for any additional and individualair bookings, all sales are final with no exchanges orrefunds.

Cancellations: Tour cancellations must be made in writ-ing to China Advocates, Inc., as soon as the decision ismade.

Cancellation penalties based on the date of receipt ofwritten notice are as follows:

91 or more days prior to departure, a cancellation feeof 30% of total cost is retained; 90-50 days prior todeparture, 50% of total cost; 49-0 days prior to depar-ture, no refund is made.

Cancellation penalties for air upgrades, additional hotelnights, hotel and room upgrades, tours and any specialarrangements, are as follows: 50-31 days prior to depar-ture, 50% of total cost; 30-0 days prior to departure,no refund is made.

Responsibilities: China Advocates, Inc. acts only as anagent for the various carriers for which tickets are pro-vided and assumes no responsibility or liability in con-nection with the service of any train, vessel, carriage,aircraft, motor vehicle or other conveyance which maybe used either wholly or in part, in the performance oftheir duty to the passenger. Neither will they be respon-sible for any act, error, or omission or for any injury,loss, accident, delay or irregularity which may be occa-sioned by a reason of any defect in any vehicles, orthrough neglect or default of any company or personengaged in conveying the passenger, or for any hotel

If the participant(s)cancel their tour, cancellation fees will be assessed as of the date of rescheduling.

China Advocates, Inc. also reserves the right to decline to accept any person as a participant in the tour, or to require any participant towithdraw from the tour at any time, when such an action is determined by the appropriate China Advocates, Inc. staff representative tobe in the best interests of the health, safety, and general welfare of the tour group, or the individual participant. Participants areencouraged not to purchase airline tickets until after receiving a letter stating that they are confirmed on the tour. China Advocates, Inc.does not accept liability for any airline cancellation penalty incurred by the purchase of a nonrefundable domestic ticket to the tourdeparture cities and return. Baggage and personal effects are the sole responsibility of the owners at all times.

Dates, schedules, program details, and costs, although given in good faith and based on information available upon the promotion of thetour, are subject to change and revision.
