The Making of a container crane (Part 1)
I am in the process of building a layout situated in the San Francisco Bay Area. The semi-freelance
layout will feature a container port, serviced by Southern Pacific and the local Northwestern Pacific. I
imagined that the Northwestern Pacific never abandon the harbor in Tiburon and it eventually grew in
a modern container facility. Half of my layout will be devoted to the harbor and I wanted a showcase
piece that is not seen very often on model railroad layouts. The container crane was the perfect
structure. Although I have been building models for more than thirty years, this would be my first
scratchbuild model.
My main source for parts was the very helpful Plastruct http://www.plastruct.com/ company that has
a great web site that makes it easy to find all the necessary parts. If you download the free pdf catalog,
the search will be even easier.
After spending 2 years on the internet finding information and dimensions of a modern Post-Panamax
(for larger ships that do not fit through the Panama Canal ), I stumbled on the Kalmar web site and the
pictures of thenewest product. I liked the shape and the fact that most of the electro cables were
hidden inside the structure which gave the crane a clean and modern look. I had to compromise on the
wide footprint since it did not fit with my layout space. My model is narrower than the original, I also
add an old fashion staircase on the side of the crane which is not present since this modern crane has
only has an elevator. Although the crane is finished, it still needs the huge wheel for the trailing cable. I
just learned to photo etch with the Micro-Mark set and soon will be able to add the last piece to the
crane.

Using a drawing in one of Kalmar’s brochures I found on their website, I made a scale drawing. I had to
settle for 1:200 which also made it possible to use commercially available photo etched railing pieces
that were actually designed for 1:200 ship models. I broke down the crane 13 sections and drew each
single detail and generated a list of pieces I needed. Here is a page of the wheel case.
I ended up with 16 pages of drawings and 90 individual plastic and brass pieces.
I also determined the exact locations of the LED lights so I could put wires in the round and square
tubing before I glued the pieces together.
I used mostly tubing material since I could insert smaller tubing and used them as connectors.
With the connectors I was able to assemble the crane without gluing it together for test fit.
encaixe.
I used SMD LEDs for lights and blinkers since they are small and square with only light shining in one
direction. These lights will illuminate the drop off and pick up work area underneath the crane.
Although the Kalmar crane does not have a staircase in the lower part of the crane, I just could not
resist building it for my model.
The stairs are a combination of Plastruct T and L profiles and GPM brass railing (seems to be
discontinued) with K&S fine mesh for the walkways. Of course after I finished the crane, NDetail, a
German manufacturer announced those Zig-Zag stairs http://www.ndetail.de/bausatz-industrie-
treppenaufgang.html as a easy to built kit. Also TrainCat Model Sales has now stairs and walkways
which would have been perfect for this projecthttp://traincat2.com/models.htm. SMD LED lights were
added to light up the staircase.
http://traincat2.com/models.htm.
The next picture shows the different pieces of a walkway and staircase. The huge holes in the styrene
profiles are for the wires from the battery (inside the building) to the lights and blinkers.
The Making of a container crane (Part 2)
The boom of the crane was divided in two pieces since I wanted to make front boom movable up and
down. I even made a mock up crane to find out if it would work.
It worked well until I added the tiny little detail parts and especially the thin railing. I either had to
forget the small pieces or to abandon the idea to swing the boom up and down. Since I really liked the
looks of the thin GPMrailing and did not want to change it to the Gold Medal, which are sturdier but
much thicker, I decided to glue both parts of the boom together. Later when I added the cables, it
turned out to be a good decision.
duas partes do boom juntas.
Although the boom looks complicated, it actually was actually pretty easy to assemble. After I glued
the three major pieces together, I cut the four fingered support beam (I called it spider) out of .3
mm ABS plastic.
The real “spider” is made up of round and square steel pieces, welded to the connecting points. To
simulate that, I glued round and square profiles to each side of the spider legs. This is better visible in
this picture of the supporting braces of the pillar.
aranha
For all the profiles, I used CA glue although plastic glue would have worked most of the time. I like CA
glue since it does not “weld” the plastic and if you make a mistake, you can separate the pieces usually
with an X-Acto knife (and I used that feature until I was a professional dissembler). In the front I
mounted a regular red SMD LED since the blinking type pulsates to fast. I should have added some
lights around the walkways but I was glue happy on that day and it was already too late when I found a
nice night shot of a crane that showed that part nicely lid up.
o do tipo piscante pulsa rápido.
The rear boom was a little bit more challenging. Attached to that part are the two pillars that connect
the two rear spiders and the two buildings. The pillars are angled in two different directions. The top
crossbar is smaller than the bottom and the pillars lean slightly backwards. After I made the two back
“spiders” I was ready to find the right leaning angle of the Pillars. I must have double checked the right
angle hundreds of time until I glued it to the back boom.
traseiro.
Test fit for the exact pitch backwards of the pillars with the “spiders” in place. Since I used round tubing
inside the square tubing, I could assemble the boom without gluing the pieces for testing.
The two buildings were used for the electric part of the crane. The bigger one was perfect for the
battery and the blinking circuits I still had from a discarded display piece of a retail store, while the
smaller one housed the resistors and three on/of sliding switches which partially stick out underneath
the building. The bigger building in the real world houses winches for front boom but I have no idea
what is inside the smaller back building. Probably electrical parts and transformers.
transformadores...
The small pillars are round tubing so that I could fit cables in them since the upper crossbar has two
blink and four flood light LEDs. There are also two staircase lights. Each red light is connected to a
separate blinking circuit so that they don’t blink at the same time or even same interval.
I placed a 9V round battery in the crane building that runs all the lights. The three switches in the back
building operate the flood lights, the red blink lights on top of the crane and the yellow warning lights
above the wheels when the crane moves sideways. Since I have the battery as a part of the crane, I
don’t need any cables that go to an external power source and the crane can be moved around freely.
Now I even found 5V coin battery that would have been even smaller since the LEDs don’t need more
than 3.5 volts.
The first light check turned out that the red blinking LEDs are working as I hoped. All three blinker have
a different pulsating speed which is really a cool effect.
The Making of a container crane (Part 3)
After finishing the booms, I was searching the internet for pictures of the trolley but it seems not much
attention is devoted to this piece of the crane. I found some information from cabin manufacturers and
pieced together a trolley that properly looks completely different than what Kalmar uses on that
particular crane.
The cabin would be painted yellow outside and gray inside and after and equipping with glass and a
Preiser worker, it would be glued underneath the cable motors. Unfortunately there was no way to add
light to the cabin or the spreader since I could not find a place for a battery. The Kalmar model does
not have visible cables like the old style do but it has a cable channel where the cable folds nicely when
the trolley moves to the back of the boom. That did not work in the N-scale world but I did not want to
give up on the manually moveable trolley.
do boom.
The trolley part with the cable motors and the electric wheel was the toughest part to find pictures. My
search turned out only two pictures, but luckily one was from the top and the other one from
underneath. I doubt that it is even close what the Kalmar trolley looks like but it fits my crane.
guindaste.
The next piece was the spreader. There are many companies on the internet that advertise their
products and I chose the one that was easily to built in my scale. A spreader is actually made of two
pieces and the lower piece switched according what type of containers need to be unloaded. The
pictured part is the piece that grabs the containers, in this case two 20 or one 40 foot, while the other
piece is always attached to the cables and only moves the spreader up and down.
This picture shows the complete
spreader with the top piece and
the four cable rollers. The middle
(loose) cable brings the power
and control impulses to the
spreader.
Esta imagem mostra o elevador
completo com a parte superior e
os rolos de cabo de quatro. O
cabo médio (solto) traz os
impulsos de potencia e controle
o elevador.
The last major pieces I needed were the wheels and wheel cases. I also had to borrow the case design
from another crane since there were no close ups available from Kalmar . All wheels have brass wire
axle and are moveable. I used round tubing for the wheels and cut a groove into the middle of the
wheels for the track the crane will move manually up and down the docks. I also filled the cases with
lead to make the bottom of the crane as heavy as possible. Although this is only a model,
the Kalmar design is so well balanced that my fear of tipping over, was completely unfounded and all
the lead in the bottom of the crane properly was unnecessary.
After finishing the last piece, and six month of work, and two years of research, I was so tired of this
project that I stowed it away. The next day, the Greenlight Intermodal, a web
sitehttp://greenlightintermodal.info/Home_Page.php dedicated to N-scale intermodel modelers
announced a contest in kitbashing and scratchbuilding rolling stocks and structures. This encouraged
me to bring the model out again and continue my work. I glued together the two boom parts and
connected the electric cables for those pieces. I also test fit the boom and the pillar.
No dia seguinte, a Greenlight Intermodal, no site
Isso me incentivou a
This gave me to the first time a sense of the size of the crane and I had to realize that I needed to re-
design the harbor part of my layout. The container storage area now became the new home of the
crane since I did not want the back boom extend over the railroad tracks of the yard.
redesenhar a parte do porto do meu layout.
After I glued the boom to the pillar, I hooked up all the wires and added the last railings and stairs just
to find out that I must have cut a wire to the flood lights between the pillars. After making sure that no
wires were visible, I had to add a magnet wire on the outside and connect two LEDs to get the power
flowing.
The last challenge was to paint the crane. The original crane is green with yellow wheel cases, trolley,
spreader and cable rollers. I kept the yellow but used a nice blue, GTW blue from Polly Scale, which
would really stick out of the gray fog of the San Francisco Bay . It took over two hours to airbrush every
little detail and every overhang while trying not to hit the small detail pieces. I almost succeeded,
almost. The railings over the Kalmarsigns where ripped off while airbrushing the zig-zag staircase from
all angles and had to be reattached and repainted. After a few coats of glossy finish, I applied the
decals and added the yellow pieces. For cables I used the EZ-line
from http://www.berkshirejunction.com/
The nice part about EZ-line is that it stretches without putting much pressure on the attached pieces.
The cables that would lift the boom were installed in a few minutes and I had not problems to keep
them tide which would have been a major undertaking with regular yarn or thin magnet wire.
The connection with between the trolley and the spreader took more time since I had to make sure
that the spreader was perfectly level. The little weight the spreader has was enough to stretch the
shortest EZ-line pieces. I will also add some weight in the container that will be hooked up to the
spreader just in case. I also added an EZ-line piece for the electric cable but this piece is kept purposely
looser since in the real world it should not pulled tide or it could snap. More pictures of the finished
crane can be seen here Photo Page
elevador estivesse perfeitamente nivelado.
fotos.
I entered the Greenlight Intermodel 2007 Contest and the judges were so kind to award me the first
place in the Scratchbuild category with the top honor of Best In Show. Check out the 2007 Contest
page for great showcase pieces of my fellow model
railroaders http://greenlightintermodal.info/2007_Intermodal_Contest.php If you missed the 2007
Contest, Steve from Greenlight Intermodal has already announced the 2008 Contest and information
can be found at http://greenlightintermodal.info/Home_Page.php I have added 5 PDF files (4 with
drawings and 1 part list) if you like to tackle this project. Some of the measurements are slightly off and
I had to adjust them before I cut the profiles, but I did not update the files since I did not intent to build
a second crane. You can download the Plastruct catalog from their web site.
