Buying Patterns1

• On average, shoppers spend $99.90 per visit and average $3,477 in annual expenditure at a mall.

• Spenders average $117.50 per visit.

• Shopper spending at malls increased from $53 in 1995 to $99 in 2006.

• Of the $99.90 spent by shoppers per visit, 45% is spent at major department stores. The remaining 55% is divided among non-food specialty stores and food stores.

• 85% of all shoppers make at least one purchase each visit.

• 61% of all shoppers go to malls without a predetermined store in mind.

• 40% of all shoppers are browsers. They spend an average of $104.20 per trip, more than shoppers with a specific purchase in mind ($99.40).

• Impulse purchases are made primarily in mall shops.
