MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Members,

It is with great pleasure that I write this message in the first quarterly issue of the CMI Newsletter for this year which has recommenced after a period of time.

As mentioned in my inaugural speech at the AGM, we are looking to achieve four main goals this year. I am happy to inform you that the progress made so far is quite promising with the support of my able ExCo members and few volunteers. Our first goal is to encourage, enroll and retain members. We are working to increase membership this year since over the period membership has decreased considerably. I invite you to introduce potential members through your contacts and support this drive.

Secondly, we intend to introduce an Awards Scheme for Management Excellence in the country. We have been able to do a considerable amount of groundwork and hope to stage the awards ceremony in the first half of 2017. We believe this event will help to fill an important gap - recognition of competent management skills and enhance professionalism in the management fraternity in the country. Thirdly, we wish to introduce the Chartered Manager programme which is the highest status that can be achieved in the management profession

and we have started working with CMI UK and, hopefully, before the end of this year, the programme will be available locally. The fourth goal is to organize programmes that can develop skills and knowledge of our managers and we are planning to organize several such events and the first evening presentation will be organized with our knowledge partner KMPG in the month of October. Similarly, programmes are planned during the months of November and December, which will be informed to you in due course. Furthermore, I’m happy to announce that we have been able to successfully conclude the CMI Quiz Challenge for the third consecutive year on the 7th of August 2016.

I would like to congratulate our Co-Chairs of PR, Publicity and Web committee, Mr. Sajith de Silva and Ms. Niranjali Goonasekara for making this a reality as I have promised in my inaugural speech.

Management Guru Peter Drucker once said “The best way to predict the future is to create it”. So let’s work towards creating a bright future for CMI Sri Lanka and I urge you to be a part of it!

The Chartered Management Institute UK (CMI) Sri Lanka branch held its 15th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday, the 23rd of June 2016, at the Kingsbury amidst a large gathering of its members. Mr. Malraj B. Kiriella (FCMI) was elected President for the year 2016 / 2017.

His Excellency James Dauris, the High Commissioner for UK in Sri Lanka and the Patron of CMI Sri Lanka Branch, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

THE CORE VALUES OF CMI

Delivering a very informative and instructive speech on Management and Politics, the High Commissioner spoke on the importance of the core values of CMI, all starting with P - Professional, Progressive, Passionate and Practical. He continued to emphasize on the importance of being Professional and Progressive which are words of priority for business leaders globally. It was important to be Professional and Progressive when governing a country, a government department or a regional government.

His Excellency Dauris added that it was impossible to achieve today’s goals without being Passionate in your work and Practical in your approach. He also intimated that “Politicians like Company Directors need to be focused on making progress.”

The High Commissioner also spoke about Paul Hawken’s book Natural Capitalism “Good management is the art of making problems so interesting and their solutions so constructive that everyone wants to get to work and deal with them.”

Quoting Thomas Watson’s premise, H. E. Dauris indicated that the difference between success and failure in a corporation can be traced on how well the organization brings out the energies and talents of its people. Likewise, in a country, the difference between success and failure depends on how well the country engages its people, brings out their energies and talents so that they will aim for the remarkable without settling for the routine.

He posed a question to the members of CMI “whether the CMI members are bringing all the skills as Chartered Managers to help Sri Lanka to aim for the remarkable.”

THE FOUR GOALS

Incoming CMI Sri Lanka Branch President, Malraj B. Kiriella in his inaugural speech said that he hopes to continue with the good work that the branch has been performing and aims at achieving four main goals this year. He described these four goals as working on developing the membership strength, introducing a recognition scheme for management excellence in the country to encourage greater professionalism of our managers, developing and promoting the CMI Chartered Manager Programme locally and introducing programmers that can develop knowledge and skills of managers.

The President explained that developing membership strength is very important for long term success of the Sri Lanka Branch.

Chartered Manager status, awarded by CMI - UK, is the highest status that could be achieved in the management profession. He spoke about the importance of the qualification and said that currently the CMI Sri Lanka branch has only 6 Chartered Managers out of its 130 members. One of his goals, he said, is to develop the Chartered Manager programme in Sri Lanka.

He also reminded why the CMI stands out among many other institutions. Having infrastructure and experience to deliver Custom Programmes to meet training requirements, having professional consultants to meet the highest standards, acting as a unique body to tackle today’s key HR issues and the only institution offering Chartered Manager status and well as recognition of CPD.

FELICITATION OF MEMBERS

The institute traditionally felicitates members who complete 25 years of membership with the award of special recognition certificates at AGMs every year. This year too three members were presented with certificates of recognition. The three members were Mr. Stuart Chapman FCMI, Mr. Dharshan John FCMI and Mr. Wajjiya Hettiarachchi MCMI.
